He tells them that they are to protect those most vulnerable in society: foreigners, widows, orphans and the poor. The Lord promises to hear the cry of the poor. He warns the Israelites that if they do not help those in need, his wrath will flare up against them and the lot of the poor will become theirs as well. St. Paul praises the Thessalonians for their Christian behavior. He says that they received God s word and became imitators of the apostle. St. Paul praises them for turning away from their former ways to now serve God and boasts how they have become a model for all believers. Jesus is asked a simple, but important, question in Matthew s gospel today. A scholar of the law asks him, Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? Jesus responds that the greatest command is that one must love God with all their heart, soul and mind; and secondly, to love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments. Exodus 22:20-26 I Thessalonians 1:5c-10 Matthew 22:23-40 All Saints Day and All Souls Day On All Saints Day, we remember all the holy people who have influenced the lives of the faithful throughout the centuries. In the Book of Revelation, St. John has a vision on the end time, when all the faithful will be gathered around the throne of God. In his First Letter, St. John tells the faithful that we do not know what we shall be like in heaven, but that when it is revealed we shall be like God and see him face to face. Matthew s gospel story of the Beatitudes promises the kingdom of heaven to those who imitate Christ s virtues on earth. Revelation 7:2-4, John 3:1-3 Matthew 5:1-12a On All Souls Day, we commemorate all of our faithful departed, remembering Christ s promise to raise them up on the last day. The Book of Wisdom encourages the people, saying that the just are in the hands of God. The faithful must have hope in their own immortality by trusting in God. St. Paul writes to the Romans that hope does not disappoint because God s love has been given to those who believe. God proves his love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. In the gospel Jesus tells the crowds that no one who comes to him will be rejected. Finally, the Lord says that everyone who sees the Son and believes will have eternal life and be raised on the last day. Wisdom 3:1-9 Romans 5:5-11 John 6:37-40

3 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk In our gospel today, Jesus gives us the greatest commandments of all. He tells us we are to love God with all our heart and soul and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. In fact, he says that the whole law depends on these two commandments. In the reading from Exodus, God gives us concrete instruction on how to carry that out. God says that we are to imitate his generosity by taking care of the poor and the outcast. In the reading from the Book of Exodus, God calls his people to remember his generosity: Do not oppress the alien (the foreigners or the outcast) because you yourselves were outcasts from God s kingdom. Do not wrong the widows or the orphans because God will visit the same judgment on those who do: your own wives will be widows and your children orphans. In the Old Testament the Lord gave his commandments in such a stern manner to remind the Israelites that they were not to imitate the might is right philosophy prevalent in the surrounding cultures. It is God who has the power and God who sets the values. God has a preferential option for the poor and those unable to take care of themselves. Jesus sums this up very simply as the call to love God and show it by loving others. This begins in our hearts and minds with gratitude for the gifts, blessings, and mercy that God has given us. God has given us a share in his divine nature and raised us up to the dignity of children of God. We are to share God s blessings, gifts and mercy with others, seeing in them the same divinity that God sees in us. Our spiritual journey is to become more like Christ in this life so that we will be able to share his life for eternity. The ability to see the image of Christ in all people is the heart of the gospel message. We are all made in the image and likeness of God. This recognition of the dignity of all people is not only the reason for Jesus command to take the good news throughout the world but is also the source of our Respect Life teachings that we focus on in a particular way in the month of October. We are called to protect the lives of everyone from conception to natural death, especially caring for the weak and the most vulnerable members of society. One issue that continues to plague our society is that of domestic violence. Recent news of certain high profile public cases give us a renewed awareness of the depth of this social ill in our society. But it is not just people like the Baltimore Ravens, Ray Rice and his wife, nor Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings switching his child. It happens in all neighborhoods, races, socio-economic strata and religions. As we conclude Respect Life month it is good to be reminded that the commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves must be observed in our own families. This usually hidden evil has many causes: societal, our own family backgrounds, our personalities and the stresses of life. However, ultimately, we are all responsible for our actions and the choices we make. Family violence against a spouse, child, parent or sibling is always against God s law. This prohibition is not just against the obvious forms of physical and sexual abuse, but verbal and psychological as well. Domestic abuse includes bullying, controlling behaviors, uncontrolled yelling and threats. While we all have occasional outbursts of anger and temper (for which apologies and amends are needed to rebuild the bonds of trust), it is our individual responsibility to get the help we need when our violent tendencies are out of control. And it is our collective responsibility to help those suffering from violence, and to reform our culture to help children grow up to emotional and spiritual maturity that ensures the dignity of every human person. The SRB Gala last Saturday was a wonderful event. Everyone seemed to have a good time, socializing and building community while supporting our parish and school. Special thanks go to Co-Chairs Kathy Ernst and Jeff Griggs, to their planning committee Trina and Paul Eifert, Ed and Rose Ann Loch, John Hansen, Bea Meyering, and John and Sue Brosnan, as well as to the volunteers who spent countless hours over the weekend and throughout the year to make this successful event a reality. God s blessings on them all. Don t forget Graziano Night tomorrow (Monday). It is a good way to support our school and to have an excellent meal and great company. Details are on page seven. Daylight Savings Time ends at 2:00 am on Sunday, November 2, Turn your clock back on Saturday night. All Saints Day Masses Because All Saints Day, November 1st, falls on a Saturday this year, it is not a Holy Day of Obligation. Our parishes masses will be at 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (not an anticipation Vigil Mass for Sunday). We will have our regular schedule of masses on Sunday, November 2nd for All Souls Day. Anointing of the Sick Because All Saints Day falls on the first Saturday in November this year, the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated on Saturday, November 8th immediately following the 8:30 morning mass. The St Robert Bellarmine Sports Association is in need of new volunteers to join our Board. We are looking for individuals that value fitness and athletics, and are willing to work as part of our team. There is an urgent need to replace a Board member that unexpectedly moved away. The duties of this person are to transition into our uniform/equipment manager. This position would require ordering uniforms (through a pre-selected vendor) several times throughout the school year. This person would also be responsible for maintaining the upkeep of our equipment and all team related supplies for all sports. This would include ordering additional supplies, as needed, per the request of the board. Other duties include preparing coaches bags, purchasing scorebooks, maintaining first aid supplies, attending monthly meetings and helping to facilitate any and all fundraisers & activities we manage. We are also seeking additional members to transition into roles that will be become available in the near future, as a few of our Board members will be retiring when their children graduate. We would like to begin to prepare for this time, and make the transition as seamless as possible. A variety of skills are needed, so we are open to all that may be interested. All board members are required to attend our monthly meetings (normally the 2nd Monday of every month), be available for the few events we host, such as, Coffee and, the Sports Banquet honoring our athletes, coaches, and volunteers, & our annual fundraiser, etc. Don t have an athlete in our program yet.you can still get involved now, so that you may ensure this program continues to grow & improve for future Bruins. The Sports Association is a wonderful athletic tradition SRB offers and you can be a part of it. Our board welcomes parents, grandparents, siblings, parishioners, and alumni to get involved. Remember the address: GetCatholicTV.com Tickets Now on Sale for Jessica's Hope Fundraiser at St. Cornelius Jessica Colucci is a 12 year old who was diagnosed in April 2014 with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. This rare disease affects less than 500 children a year, strikes without warning and is difficult to treat. Jessica has been undergoing treatment at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children s Hospital of Chicago since being diagnosed. This hardship has put a tremendous financial strain on her parents. Her dad, Dominick, is a well-respected and decorated Chicago Police Officer for 20 years and her mother, Jennifer, is unable to work so that she can be at her side during treatment. Jessica has the tremendous support of her brothers Dominick, age 15, Lucas, age 9 and Kyle, age 2 who are being cared for at home by family and friends. A Fundraiser, Jessica's Hope, is being held on Saturday, November 8th at the St. Cornelius Church Hall from 6pm to midnight. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Ticket price includes dinner. Evening will include cash bar, raffles, silent auction, split-the-pot and a DJ. Attendees will also have a chance to register on the National Bone Marrow registry and potentially save a life of someone fighting cancer.
