He sees three men before his tent and greets them with the Middle Eastern hospitality of the desert, offering water for their feet and food for their journey. Abraham goes beyond the basics, and offers them a feast. One of the travelers promises to return the next year when Sarah will have given birth to a son. St. Paul continues his Letter to the Colossians, rejoicing in his sufferings for their sake. In his own body he is filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his (Christ s) body. His only goal is that all may come to know the saving power of God. Paul s desire is that everyone may be presented to God "perfect" in Christ. In the gospel, Jesus visits two sisters, Martha and Mary, who are long-time friends. Mary sits quietly at the feet of Jesus, listening to his words. Martha, preoccupied with the burdens of hospitality, complained to Jesus that Mary is not helping her. Jesus replies that Martha is anxious about many things, but Mary has chosen the better part. Genesis 18:1-10a Colossians 1:24-28 Luke 10:38-42 Lifelong Faith Formation Classes Lifelong Faith Formation classes are now available through the Archdiocese Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry. These classes, which include a program for training catechists, extend the opportunity to be a part of the formation of the next generation of Chicago Catholics to every member of the Archdiocese. Whether you want to take a full course of study toward certification as a catechist, or simply participate in select classes to enrich your faith, these classes from the Archdiocese are an exciting new resource. All classes are online, so they fit into your everyday schedule, and affordable as some courses are available for only $14. You can complete the classes at your own pace and in your home. Topics include Scripture, John Paul II s Theology of the Body, Church History and much more. For a full listing of courses and prices, please visit

3 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures give us the classic story of Martha and Mary entertaining Jesus in their home, highlighting the tension between the duty of active service in the world and the need for contemplative time to nurture our relationship with God. The balance requires discernment since the choice is not either/or but both/and. Complicating our lives, Jesus also tells Martha not to be anxious about the duties of life. Yet we still have to take care of these same responsibilities. This requires us to turn to the Holy Spirit frequently for guidance and reassurance, helping us to be active in the world without becoming overwhelmed, to make haste slowly. The Christian life is always one of paradox, holding opposites in tension without going to extremes. In the ancient Middle East, and still today, the duty of hospitality is paramount. In the reading from Genesis, Abraham is visited by three strangers. We are told that he ran to greet them. He makes haste to offer them water, a place to rest, and food to eat. Sarah bakes fresh bread, they kill a steer and offer a feast to their guests, who, oddly, remain nameless. One of them promises to return in a year and Sarah will then give birth to a son. They realize that they have been visited by an angel of the Lord to bring them the fulfillment of God s promise. The story is a reminder of our responsibility to take care of the strangers in our midst, with ramifications for social justice, immigration reform, alleviating poverty all concrete ways to carry out the corporal works of mercy, obeying Jesus command to love our neighbor as ourselves, which we heard in last week s gospel parable of the Good Samaritan. We are reminded today that when we see the face of Christ in the face of the poor or the stranger, we may be greeting angels unaware as Abraham and the Good Samaritan did. This is what St. Paul means when he tells the Colossians that he is filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body. In the gospel Martha is carrying out the duties of hospitality not to a stranger but to the Lord himself. Jesus does not condemn Martha for her work. What he tells her, though, is that she is anxious about many things. It is in her worry about getting things done right that she misses the opportunity to be present to her guest (as Abraham was) and to enjoy the company of the Lord. He tells her that Mary has chosen the better part. Not the only part; not that service is not a good thing, but that service must be done in relationship to the one being served. Part of the lesson of the gospel is to remind us that while acts of charity are good in themselves, they must be performed in relationship (solidarity) to others. Again, like the Good Samaritan, we must have compassion for those who are hurting or in need. Jesus says they truly are our brothers and sisters. This gospel story also highlights the tension that exists in the need to carry out our responsibilities without becoming overwhelmed by them. In other words, we must always seek to do the next right thing, but to leave the results in God s hands. The tricky part is expressing and acting out of care and concern without becoming anxious or overwhelmed. We often fret or stew over things we can t control. Jesus says that fretting is evil and leads to sin. The reason he says this is that when we take our cares and concerns (which are generally good) to the level of anxiety, playing them over and over in our minds, they escalate into all sorts of scenarios and take on a life of their own. We allow them to dominate us and to crowd out the peace of God. We often then try to control the outcomes and do all sorts of things that are not helpful. In the process we often make life miserable for those around us as well. We need to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to him, allowing him to take control of the situation, to calm our fears (as he calms the seas) so that we may be in his presence and then be open to the Holy Spirit active in our lives. We are anxious about many things. Only one thing is needed, and that is trust. The Lord is always present to us. We only need to calm our minds and allow ourselves to be present to him. There will be a special performance of the Maitrise des Hauts de France French Boys here at St. Robert s on Tuesday, July 26th at 7 p.m. The concert is free but we will take up a collection for the choir. Please see page four for details. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

6 Page 6 July 17, 2016 ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Statement by Archbishop Blase J. Cupich An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. July 8, 2016 Again we begin our day shocked by news of lives lost overnight this time those of five police officers working to ensure the people of Dallas could assemble in a peaceful anti-violence protest. This latest tragedy comes directly after deaths in Louisiana and Minnesota. Every corner of our land is in the grip of terror fueled by anger, hatred and mental illness and made possible by plentiful, powerful weapons. Anyone at any time can become a victim. It is time to break the cycle of violence and retaliation, of fear and powerlessness that puts more guns in our homes and on our streets. Our hearts and minds need to change so our country can change. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Let us assemble in love to embrace the mourning and lost among us. Let us assemble in brotherhood to learn what unites us and put aside what divides us. Let us assemble in strength and keep assembling until our leaders have the courage to take the actions that will make these tragedies less likely. Let us pause today to remember not only these officers, but the principle of non-violence they died protecting.

7 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 7 In May, our parishioners James and Anne Ouper joined approximately 1200 others on a 21- mile walking pilgrimage The Walk to Mary. The Walk to Mary is a prayerful journey from Shrine to Shrine, beginning at the National Shrine of St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church located on St. Norbert College Campus and concluding at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help, in Champion, WS. The Walk began with songs and prayers at 7:00 am. There were water and rest areas every few miles, with qualified personnel providing first aid assistance, and volunteers providing transportation if necessary to pilgrims that had reached their maximum walking distance capacity. Lunch was served at the Holy Cross Parish School Facility; the 14- mile check point. Mass was celebrated at the chapel of the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help at 5:00 pm. What began for James and Anne as a wishful attempt to do a few miles of walking (3 to be exact), culminated in a 21- mile completion of a pilgrimage, filled with praying the rosary, encounters with people from around the world, and the sharing of life s stories. One of their most memorable experiences was walking with and praying the rosary with Fr. Rocky, from Relevant Radio, the 2nd largest Catholic talk radio network in the United States. Why the Pilgrimage? The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help is the only Church-approved Marian Apparition Site in the United States and from the discussions along the way, a place where prayers are answered and even miracles occur.
