Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Carol Bell, Adeline Sniegowski Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the book of Deuteronomy the Israelites are afraid that after Moses dies, if they hear the voice of God again they will die. Moses tells them that the Lord will raise up another prophet for them. The Lord tells them that if they do not listen to this prophet, they will have to answer to God for it. In the second reading St. Paul tells the Corinthians that he wants them to be free of anxiety. He says that it is best to remain in their present unmarried state so that they might more easily follow the Lord without distraction. In the gospel Jesus teaches in the synagogue, astonishing the people because he drives out unclean spirits and speaks with the authority of God. Deuteronomy 18: Corinthians 7: Mark 1: The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord commemorates when, at eight days old, Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. In bringing Jesus to the Temple and naming him as his son, Joseph becomes his legal father, making Jesus truly the Son of David and heir to the Messianic Prophecy. The Presentation of the Lord is the Fourth Joyful Mystery of the Rosary, helping us to remember the great events of salvation history in the Incarnation. The prophet Malachi, announcing the coming of the messenger to prepare the way of the Lord, says that the Messiah will be like a refiner s fire, purifying the children of Levi to restore the kingdom to the favor of the Lord. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews says that Jesus freely accepted his own death to free humanity from slavery to sin and death. In the Gospel the Holy Spirit sends Simeon into the Temple to take the baby Jesus in his arms, bless him and announce that he has seen the salvation of Israel. The prophetess Anna confirms the message saying that this child is the redemption of Jerusalem. Feast of St. Blase St. Blase was a fourth century bishop in Armenia, renowned for his personal holiness and dedication to the physical and spiritual health of his people. He was tortured and beheaded for refusing to sacrifice to pagan idols. Legend has it that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone. Because of this miracle of intercession St. Blase became the patron saint for the healing of throats. Through the intercession of St. Blase, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil. His feast day is February 3rd.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Our Scriptures today call us to listen and to act on the Word of God. We are reminded that God will hold us responsible, not only for the sins we commit, but also for the good we fail to do. As Christians our lives are oriented toward God and the divine life we have received in baptism. So often we get caught up in the affairs of the world that we do not hear the Word of God. Even worse, at times we may even deliberately ignore God s commands. In the first reading Moses tells the people that God will give them what they asked for, namely a prophet to tell them the Word of God. They were afraid to hear God s voice or see his face. They knew that it was dangerous to come face to face with the living God. So they asked for an intermediary, someone to bring God s word to them. But throughout the Scriptures they ignored the prophets when the message was not something they wanted to hear. And God replies that anyone who fails to listen to his word spoken through the prophets will suffer the consequences. Fortunately, we are blessed to have a prophet who speaks God s Word. In fact, the prophet is God s Word. The prophet promised to us is Jesus himself. In the gospel reading we hear Jesus teaching in the synagogue with authority. The people were astonished at this because their regular teachers (the scribes and the Pharisees) always deferred to the higher authority of the Law and the Prophets. Jesus claimed that authority for himself, driving out demons as a sign of that authority. Even the demons acknowledged him as the Holy One of God. And so the Word of God is made known to us through Sacred Scripture. The Bible is God s self-revelation to us for our salvation. Jesus performs physical cures so that we may be open to the Word that gives spiritual healing and the promise of everlasting life. To act on his Word is to be healed spiritually so that we may share in his own divine life. God gives us commandments so that we may be conformed to his image. St. Paul s odd advice to the Corinthians is not a commentary on marriage but a call to keep our eyes focused on God. He wants us to be free of anxieties, not to impose a restraint upon us, but so that we can see clearly the will of God and act upon it in our lives. Because Jesus has shown us the face of God s love and mercy, we need not be afraid of coming face to face with God. It is the Spirit of God dwelling within us that empowers us to do his will without fear, even in difficult or unpopular circumstances. Refusal to listen to and obey the Word of God brings spiritual death. This is not a threat but a biblical reality. The opposite is also a biblical reality. When we hear and act on the Word of God, even when it is difficult or we are afraid, his Word leads us to Christ and gives us spiritual life. One way we can act on the Word of God is to support the Annual Catholic Appeal which begins today. Those people who have donated in the past should have received this year s information in the mail directly from the Archbishop s office. In-pew parish pledging will take place during mass the weekends of February 7-8 and Most of these funds support Catholic education, capital needs for poor parishes, aid to the poor and archdiocesan support ministries. Since 100% of the funds above our targeted goal are returned to the parish, we would like to raise funds to fix the lighting in the church. As you may recall, the lighting board (installed in 1989) went on the fritz around Holy Week last year. While the technicians were able to repair it, the system really should be replaced since parts are no longer available. Additionally, the church carpets will need to be replaced within the next few years and we think it would be a good idea to begin raising the funds for them now, rather than be hit with big expenses all at once. Please see the article on page four. Last Saturday we had a mini-retreat for the children preparing to receive First Eucharist, followed by the Rite of Enrollment at the 5 p.m. mass. We have sixty-two students preparing to receive the sacrament in May. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. On Sunday we began Catholic Schools Week with a special blessing of the teachers, staff and school board at the noon mass, followed by an Open House in the gym. Many new families came by and several have already signed up to come to SRB in the fall. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Page 4 February 1, 2015 Dear Parishioners, Annual Catholic Appeal This year the parish, along with all the other parishes, will again conduct the Annual Catholic Appeal to support the work of the Archdiocese. The financial goal is based upon 6% of the previous year s regular collection. For 2015 our goal is $30,840. We have always exceeded our goal. All (100%) of the excess funds have been returned directly to the parish and have been used to help make up our operating shortfall. Due to the ongoing needed maintenance repairs the Finance Committee and I request that we use this year s appeal to pay for some of our unbudgeted needs. Our hope is that through your generosity we can raise the funds to pay for these expenses through the Annual Appeal. We would like to replace the lighting system in the church. The technician s estimate from last year is around $30,000. The cost to replace the carpet in the church would be between $35,000 - $50,000. Our total goal for the Annual Appeal to cover these expenses is roughly $96,000. Sincerely, Fr. Neil 2015 Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal Begins Entrusted with Responsibility The 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway. Many of our parishioners have received a letter from Archbishop Blase Cupich. He asks that you make a pledge to the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please respond generously. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Annual Catholic Appeal also gives funds or support that is of great help here at St. Robert Bellarmine parish. For example, the Annual Catholic Appeal funds or supports: (1) The Institute for Diaconal Studies which prepares men for ordination to the Permanent Diaconate. Bill Frere, our parish Adult Education Coordinator, is now in his final year of study in this program; (2) The Annual Parish Leadership Day, which is for every ministry leader, parish pastoral council member, and other parishioners considering a more active role in the life of our parish and which will be held this year on Saturday, February 21st, 2015 at Marist High School, 4200 West 115th Street in Chicago; (3) The Lenten Educational Materials that are used by our school and religious education students; (4) The volunteer catechists who meet on Wednesday evenings in Kernaghan Hall for the Special Religious Education (SPRED) Program, which is supported by the archdiocesan agency SPRED by means of curriculum and training that reaches out and integrates teens and young adults with special needs into our parish family; (5) A portion of our 2014 parish capital improvements from the rebates received by our parish as reported in the November 2, 2014 church bulletin and in a letter sent by Fr. Fackler to the parishioners. For this year the theme of the Annual Catholic Appeal is Entrusted with Responsibility. We each have a responsibility to recognize God s gifts to us and to nurture them. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our parish, for our Archdiocese, and for the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. As you review the mailing from Archbishop Cupich, please note the ministries and services funded by the Annual Catholic Appeal. Note those mentioned above that directly support the work of our parish. Please give generously. When our parish reaches its 2015 goal of $30,840 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received over this goal will be returned to us as a rebate for use in our parish.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 Ordination Bann William Frere, a parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, is scheduled to be ordained to the Order of Deacon on May 17, 2015 at Holy Name Cathedral by Archbishop Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago. This is a public announcement of the upcoming ordination and fulfills the canonical requirement. Catholics are obliged to reveal any impediments or circumstances that would prevent William Frere from receiving Sacred Orders and should contact the pastor or the archbishop with such information as soon as possible if there is a serious question about the candidate s suitability for ordained ministry. Please pray for the repose of the souls of Joseph John Podyma, Antonina Gruszka, Frank Weimer, Lois Hohmeier, Peter Lambe, Patrick O Malley and for their families and friends. Wednesday, February 4 at 7:30 pm meet in the Church ~ Take time out to work out your body and your soul! ~ Meet other young adults and parents in the parish. ~ Come, check it out and get your heart rate moving to a new rhythm. Faith and Fitness A workout for your body and spirit! THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5 9:00 AM KERNAGHAN HALL MEETING ROOM Every week we explore the scriptures for the coming Sunday. Learn about the scriptures through prayer and discussion with other parishioners. Questions? Call Bill at or srbvolunteers@yahoo.com.

Page 6 February 1, 2015 February 8th, 2015 National Day of Prayer for Victims and Survivors of Human Trafficking On February 8 th, 2015 the USCCB will observe the National Day of Prayer for Victims and Survivors of Human Trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine was freed, she dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. St. Josephine Bakhita, you were sold into slavery as a child and endured untold hardship and suffering. Once liberated from your physical enslavement, you found true redemption in your encounter with Christ and his Church. O St. Bakhita, assist all those who are trapped in a state of slavery; intercede with God on their behalf so that they will be released from their chains of captivity. Those whom man enslaves, let God set free. Provide comfort to survivors of slavery and let them look to you as an example of hope and faith. Help all survivors find healing from their wounds. We ask for your prayers and intercessions for those enslaved among us. Amen. From United State Conference of Catholic Bishops Wednesday, February 18 Benefits of Home Care Timely Talk 2:00 p.m. Norwood Crossing Assisted Living, N. Nina Avenue in Chicago Caring for an elderly friend or relative can be very demanding and exhausting. To distinguish between providing caregiving and when to hire a caregiver requires an understanding of many factors. To find out more about what you need to provide and when the need exceeds your ability to provide assistance, attend the Timely Talk, Benefits of Home Care. Libby Davis, Executive Director of Norwood Seniors Network, and Bea McDonough, Norwood Seniors Network Director of Sales, will make the presentation. A question and answer session, refreshments and door prize drawing will follow. For more information or to RSVP, please call (773) or info@norwoodcrossing.org. Worldwide Marriage Encounter In today s second reading St Paul talks about the fact that married couples have to deal with the anxieties of the world. Sometimes those stresses can really have a negative impact on our marriages. Get away from all those worldly anxieties and take time to just focus on God and each other by making a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends are February 13-15, 2015 or April 17-19, 2015 or June 12-14, 2015, all at Elk Grove Village, IL. Early registration is highly recommended. 7 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 7 PARISH LEADERSHIP DAY FEBRUARY 21, 2015 MARIST HIGH SCHOOL As Catholics we are always seeking to embrace God's grace, which is made visible in the rich history of our faith. Although there are many challenges in the world and in our Church today, we are called to be united in Christ s love to overcome these challenges using the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the grace bestowed upon us through the sacraments. The theme of this Parish Leadership Day (PLD), Living the Sacraments, follows the fourth year of the Strategic Pastoral Plan: Year of the Sacraments: Pope Francis Vision of Healing and Communion. The program is designed to provide you and your parish with knowledge, ongoing initiatives and opportunities to bring the sacraments to life in your parish through discussion, healing, technology, catechesis and prayer. Parish Leadership Day is for every ministry leader, clergy, parish pastoral council member, and other parishioners considering a more active role in the life of the parish. We are ALL called to discipleship, a community of followers working together to spread God s healing message. To accomplish this we must be living a sacramental life in outward signs of service and actions that will result in drawing others closer to Christ and to the life that we live as Catholics.
