Thank you from the Women s Center Thirty First Sunday in Ordinary Time The author of the Book of Wisdom says that God has mercy on us all simply because he created us. God loves all things because he himself has made them. Therefore he overlooks our sins so that we may repent and turn back to him. St. Paul tells the Thessalonians that he prays for them always that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in them and they in him. He warns them not to believe anyone who tells them that the day of the Lord is at hand. In the gospel story Jesus encounters a tax collector, Zacchaeus, and tells him that he will stay at his house with him. Zacchaeus declares that he will give half of what he owns to the poor and repay fourfold anyone whom he has extorted. Jesus declares that salvation has come to his house because the Son of Man came to save what was lost. Wisdom 11:22 12:2 2 Thessalonians 1:11 2:2 Luke 19:1-10 DID YOU KNOW THE PROGRESS CENTER OF INDEPENDENT LIVING has helped numerous individuals in your area? The Progress Center of Independent Living is making a difference in your community by trusting in the Disability Rights Movement and helping the disabled achieve their self-determined goals through offering the same freedom, rights, and civil liberties as everyone else. PCIL is one of the many CCHD grantees helping to empower low-income persons to help themselves and transform their city. This November 23rd and 24th, join the millions of generous Chicago Catholics and support the Catholic Campaign for Human Development to help fund more remarkable organizations. Please visit: ChicagoPeaceAndJustice.org/CCHD for more information. The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty. Pope Francis

3 November 3, 2013 Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures tell us of God s unconditional love and his gifts of mercy and forgiveness. God does not want us to live in fear of judgment. He calls us to a relationship based on love and acceptance. The author of the Book of Wisdom makes this very clear in beautiful poetical fashion : "you have mercy on all love all things that are, and loathe nothing you have made you spare all things because they are yours." Wisdom tells us that God overlooks people s sins so that they may repent and rebukes them little by little to remind them of their sins so that they may repent and believe in the Lord. This is hardly the image of an angry God, but one who nudges us into conversion because he loves us and wants us to share in his divine life. The gospel is even more revealing. We hear the story of another tax collector. Tax collectors were considered sinners because they collaborated with the Romans and grew rich from extorting extra "taxes" from their own people. In one of the most amusing scenes in the scriptures, Zacchaeus is up in a tree so that he can see Jesus as he walks by. Jesus looks up, and upon seeing him, invites himself to dinner at Zacchaeus house! It is in this interchange that Zacchaeus experiences the love and mercy of God. In a gesture of extravagant love (mirroring that which he has just experienced from Jesus), Zacchaeus declares that he will give half what he owns to the poor and will repay fourfold everything he has wrongfully taken. Jesus replies that today salvation has come to this house because Zacchaeus, too, is a descendant of Abraham. Jesus reminds the Pharisees that the Son of Man came to seek out the sinner and to save what was lost. The Harvest Gala was a great evening. Over 250 people showed up to have a good time and to support our parish. The Guardian Angel Award was given in honor of our pastors, particularly to our living Pastors Emeriti, Fr. Leroy Wickowski and Fr. Mike Goergen. It was good to have them back with us for the mass and the celebration. Thank you to the co -chairs Jeff Griggs and Susie Jablonski, and to all the volunteers, who put in hundreds of hours to make this event possible. The proceeds from the event will be used to help balance the parish operating budget. The auction Bid-A-Need funds will help pay for special projects in the church and school. Final figures will be published in the bulletin when they become available in a couple of weeks. The Parents Association Halloween Party was the biggest ever with over 325 kids and families coming through the Haunted House and enjoying an evening of fun, food and family. Thank you to Jennifer McHugh, Rosie Levin and all the volunteers who also put in lots of hours to plan, decorate, host and clean-up. It is wonderful to see so many young families involved. And, of course, Halloween is all about the kids and they really had a blast. The Parish Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated this Tuesday evening to honor those who have died in the past year and to pray for all our deceased love ones. The Bereavement Committee will host a light reception in the hall following the mass. All are welcome. In November we remember all of the deceased. In the back of the church there is a special book to enroll the names of the deceased. This book will be carried in procession at the weekend liturgies throughout the month and placed by the font to remind us of those who have gone before us in faith. Please do not use the Book of the Deceased for any other prayer intentions. There is a separate book for prayer intentions at the back of the church. The Parish Finance Committee met last Monday to review the Financial Statements for the year ended June 30, The financial summary, along with my letter highlighting the results, as well as looking forward to the current year, will be published in next week s bulletin. The Parents Association will host a Pancake Breakfast in the parish hall next Sunday after the 8:00 a.m. and 10 a.m. masses. This is always a delicious hot breakfast at a reasonable price. Proceeds benefit our school. Please see page six for details. Our nation will celebrate Veterans Day on Monday, November 11th. Please remember them in your prayers and support those still with us. There will be a special blessing at the masses next weekend. The school will host a special Veterans Day program next Monday after the 8:30 mass. Please see page seven for details. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

9 November 3, 2013 Page 9 Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools Introduces the Virtual Academy Online Learning for 6th 12th Grade Catholic School Students Chicago, IL (October 22, 2013) The Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools is launching its Virtual Academy, which offers personalized learning opportunities through the use of online education to middle school and high school students across the 244 Catholic schools in Cook and Lake counties. As a complement to coursework students take at their Catholic school, the Virtual Academy aims to amplify student learning through supplemental online opportunities. The Virtual Academy brings more diverse course offerings that can be matched to Catholic school students' individual interests and instructional needs. We are very excited to launch our Virtual Academy as yet another strong educational and experiential tool for our teachers, parents, and students who are interested in diving deeper into the online learning opportunities available in Catholic education today, remarked Sr. Mary Paul McCaughey, O.P., Superintendent of Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools. We are aware of the evolving delivery systems and modes of digital learning, and believe that the Virtual Academy will help our kids by expanding the definition of what is a great Catholic school. The Archdiocese of Chicago provides a high-quality Catholic school education to more than 84,000 students. To enrich existing Catholic school offerings, the Virtual Academy is designed to serve 6th-12th grade students, with a specific emphasis toward those who: Are accelerated learners who wish to be self-paced and move quickly through many exciting courses. Wish to take additional AP courses. Have been recommended by their teacher or administrator for an online course. Want to explore enrichment options. Need more time than the standard classroom allows to master concepts. Learn more easily with a single-course focus or have learning challenges. Are unable to attend a traditional school because of travel, family situation, illness, or training for competitions or careers, e.g. athletes or musicians. The Virtual Academy website is virtualacademy.archchicago.org, and visitors can learn more about the Virtual Academy and how it can benefit Catholic school students. Families can enroll students at any time for the online courses, though they are asked to consult with their child s teacher about the course selections to ensure alignment around the best learning opportunities for their child. The Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools serve 84,000 students in 244 schools across the City of Chicago, and Cook and Lake counties. Enrollment in Catholic elementary schools is now growing and sixty percent of schools are stabilizing and increasing their student population. It is the United States' largest private school system and the recipient of the most U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Awards of any other system. Parents or guardians seeking faith, focus and achievement for their children are encouraged to visit schools.archchicago.org.
