Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Margaret Ludden, Robert Walsh, Patricia Klenck, Gina Brettman Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time The writer of the Book of Sirach tells us that a person s character is revealed by their speech. One s faults as well as interior attitudes are exposed by the way one speaks. St. Paul tells the Corinthians that Christ s victory on the Cross takes away the sting of death; and therefore they are to remain fully devoted to the works of the Lord in order to share in his victory. In the gospel, Jesus reminds us not to judge. Rather, we should remove the log from our own eye before pointing out the splinter in our brother s eye. He goes on to tell his listeners that a tree is known by its fruits. A good person does good works; an evil person does evil. Sirach 27:4-7 1 Corinthians 15:54-58 Luke 6:39-45 Ash Wednesday We begin Lent this week on Ash Wednesday. Our foreheads are marked with ashes as a sign of our own mortality to help us enter this season of grace with humility. We hear the words, Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return. The season of Lent calls us to a deeper conversion, to become more honest with ourselves, to seek the grace of true repentance. The goal of our Lenten sacrifices is to open our hearts to a more intimate relationship with the God who has called us to share his own divine life. The ashes are placed on our foreheads in the sign of the cross to remind us of Christ s crucifixion and death for our sake, that by his cross we have been redeemed, and that the cross is God s supreme act of love for us. We enter Lent seeking to imitate God s self-giving love, taking up our cross to follow in Christ s own footsteps. It is only by journeying to the cross with Christ that we can participate in his resurrection and enter into the kingdom of heaven. In the first reading, we hear God s invitation to return to him with our whole hearts. The prophet Joel calls the elders to proclaim a fast for all the people, offering repentance for their sins and a return to the Lord s favor. The Lord hears them and takes pity on his people. St. Paul implores the Corinthians to be reconciled to God, reminding them that Christ himself has reconciled us to God. He who knew no sin became sin so that we might become righteous before God. He tells them to act quickly because now is the acceptable time of salvation. Jesus tells the people that acts of prayer, fasting and almsgiving should be done in secret. Those who do these acts in public may fall into the trap of hypocrisy, doing deeds for the esteem of their brothers and sisters. But such acts done in secret for the Lord alone will be rewarded by God. Joel 2: Corinthians 5:20 6:2 Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

3 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk In last week s scriptures Jesus told us to forgive our enemies and to not judge others or we ourselves will be judged. In fact, how we treat others will be the standard by which God judges us. In today s gospel, he tells us that not only are we not to judge others, but we are to look inwardly at our own faults and be converted to personal holiness. In the reading from the wisdom Book of Sirach, we are told that the attitudes of our hearts are revealed by the way we speak. He likens our attitudes to a tree that is revealed by the quality of its fruit. Jesus uses the same image in the gospel, saying that a good tree does not bear rotten fruit, and likewise, a rotten tree does not bear good fruit. We are known, and judged, by the fruit that we bear in our lives. A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil, for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks. Much of the fruit of our lives can be seen by others, but God sees everything that is in our hearts. Because Jesus wants us to live in the light of God s love, he is so stern in the gospel about the need for personal conversion. He asks why we notice the splinter in our brother s eye but not the wooden log in our own? He denounces such people as hypocrites. He tells us to remove the beam in our own eye first. When we have first been honest about our own sins and need for mercy, will we be able to see clearly the faults of others and so receive the wisdom to either correct them in love or leave it to God. Otherwise, our judgments becomes simply an exercise in selfrighteousness, which, as we heard from Jesus last week, leads to our own damnation. Fortunately, we have God s promise to help us overcome our faults and weaknesses. In the second reading, St. Paul reminds us that it is God who gives us the victory through Jesus Christ. If we remain steadfast in our faith and devoted to good works, God will accomplish the conversion of our souls that we seek. This week s call to conversion is a good lead-in to Lent. Lent is a holy season when we are called to journey back to the waters of baptism, a time of new-birth when God claims us as his own. The disciplines of Lent are not about flexing our spiritual muscles or using our will-power to get through the next forty days. Lent is a time to detach ourselves from our normal routines, self-indulgences and behaviors so that we can be drawn into a deeper personal relationship with God (see my comments on Ash Wednesday on page two). Our masses on Ash Wednesday are at 8:30 a.m., 1:45 and 7:00 p.m. There will be a prayer service with distribution of ashes at 4 p.m. Our Lenten schedule can be found on page four, but I would like to invite everyone to set aside some time for our Multi-Parish Mission on Monday through Wednesday, March to be held at Our Lady of Victory. There will be three evenings of prayer, worship and song, followed by hospitality. Msgr. John Canary, former rector of Mundelein Seminary and current director of the Mundelein Retreat House, will bring alive the gospel message, using the teachings of St. John of the Cross on the Seven Ways God Changes Our Lives. It will be a great opportunity for some spiritual renewal for all of us. Today we conclude the in-pew pledging for the Annual Catholic Appeal. Christ calls us to open our hearts to the needs of the poor. Proceeds help fund poor parishes and schools, social justice works of the Church in Chicago and programs to bring the Gospel to others in the Archdiocese and around the world. Please consider a generous pledge to support Archbishop Cupich and the Annual Catholic Appeal. Next Sunday we will celebrate the Rite of Sending at the noon mass with our RCIA candidates Paula Diaz, Cynthia Dopke and Mark Martinez. Following the Mass, they will go to the Cathedral to celebrate the Rite of Election where they will be enrolled with all the other Candidates to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Assistance in delivering blankets also needed! For further details, contact Deacon Bill at the rectory. LENTEN REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are between 18 years and 59 1/2 years of age. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer, the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious.
