In the reading from the Book of Exodus Moses reads to them the commandments of the Lord given in the Book of the Covenant. The people reply that they will listen and obey all that the Lord has commanded them. After this Moses takes the blood, which was considered to be the source of life, of sacrificed bulls and sprinkled it on the people signifying the covenant with God. The Letter to the Hebrews tells of the New Covenant which is the only sacrifice that can truly sanctify those who have sinned. It is only through Christ, the eternal high priest who offers to God his own blood, that humanity can be cleansed and receive eternal redemption. This is dramatically portrayed in Mark s gospel as Jesus meets with his disciples in the upper room to eat the Passover lamb immediately before his Passion. Our Lord reveals the new and everlasting Covenant: that he himself is the sacrificial lamb and mediator between God and humanity. Jesus took the bread and gave it to them declaring: this is my body; and, after giving them the cup this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for you and for the many so that sins may be forgiven. Exodus 24: 3-8 Hebrews 9: Mark 14: 12-16, THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS AND THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus refers to the whole mystery of the Incarnation and Christ s immense love for the Father and for us. When we meditate upon Jesus heart we think of how he loves us beyond any love we can imagine. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a symbol of that love. This devotion expresses the Church s beautiful historical piety for Christ and calls us to conversion and penance, love and gratitude for Christ s sacrifice on our behalf. The real human beating heart of Christ echoes in the Immaculate Heart of Mary, his mother. Mary as mother and as disciple enjoys a unique relationship with Christ. She participated like no other could have in humanity s salvation. The memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary celebrates this unique relationship between Son and Mother and the extraordinary greatness to which Mary fulfilled her role. Mary in an immaculate way was conformed to the will of God the Father. Through her own free will Mary abandoned herself perfectly to the designs of God. The devotion to Mary s Immaculate Heart moves us to reflect on Mary s interior life and virtues, drawing us closer to God.
3 The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. This celebration reminds us how much God loves us. The Father is willing to sacrifice his only Son. Jesus gives his life for us and sends us the Holy Spirit so that we can experience his forgiveness and share in his divine life. At the end of last week s gospel Jesus promised to remain with us to the end of the age. The Eucharist is the fulfillment of that promise. In today s gospel we hear St. Mark s version of the Last Supper. At the Passover Feast the night before his death, Jesus gives us the new Covenant. Jesus takes the bread and the cup, blesses them and gives them to his disciples, proclaiming it to be his very body and blood, poured out for our salvation. The Jewish Feast of Passover commemorates their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. Commemoration is more than a remembrance. In a mystical way the Jewish people believe that they participate in that deliverance every time they celebrate Passover. For all Christians, the passion of Christ is our deliverance from slavery to sin and death. At the Last Supper Jesus institutes the Eucharist as the commemoration of his passion. In a mystical way, we too, participate in Christ s death and resurrection every time we celebrate the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the heart of our faith. Many people believe that the Eucharist is simply a reminder of Jesus, or at best a spiritual communion with Jesus or a symbolic gesture of our unity as believers. Many others don t see how it makes any difference. This truly is a tragedy. Flannery O Connor once wrote concerning the Eucharist If it s just a symbol, then to hell with it. The martyrs of the early church wrote Without the Eucharist we cannot live. We would certainly still have our physical life. But without the faith and grace of the Eucharist our spiritual life is diminished and the image of Christ in which we are made will disappear (literally rot away in the words of St. Athanasius). We need to be drawn back into this mystery of our faith, the greatest gift we can receive, our Lord himself. The School Graduation was a wonderful, but bittersweet celebration. Twenty-seven of our children are moving on to high school and to a bright future. Some of them have been together at our school for nine years. It is hard to say goodbye to such a wonderful group of students. They will be missed. But they will always be part of our family and in our hearts and prayers. Thank you to Mrs. Mijal, Mrs. Peters, Sr. Ann and Sr. Mary Lou for all their love and concern over the years. And thank you to all those who planned our celebration. Please see the pictures on page six. The Altar Servers had a special pizza party this past Thursday to celebrate this year of service to the parish. Thank you to Deacon Bill Frere for leading their training and for hosting the event. Today the School Board will host Coffee and Donuts after all the masses. The Parish Council will meet this Tuesday at 7 p.m. All parishioners are welcome to stop by at the beginning of the meeting to share any suggestions or concerns. The School Honors Program will be held this Wednesday in the Church immediately following the morning mass. All are welcome. The Church celebrates two special feasts this week. The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is this Friday and the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is this Saturday. See page two for more details. Our second collection today is for the Chicago Priests Retirement and Medical Fund. The pension fund has taken a beating recently. Combined with soaring medical costs, this has caused a financial crisis for our retired priests. Thank you for your continued generosity. The annual Parish Calendar Meeting will be held on Thursday, June 18 at 7 pm in Kernaghan Hall. Leaders of parish ministries and organizations please bring your calendars. Any other requests for use of the parish facilities should be submitted in writing to Barbara, our parish secretary. We would like to start a Children s Liturgy of the Word service to be held during the 10 am Sunday mass. This is a great way for young children to hear the bible stories written for them, and their parents can focus on the mass. It s a win-win situation that will be a great help to young parents. However, we do need volunteers to create a team. Training will be provided. Please see page four for details. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

This ministry serves children, by proclaiming God s word on a level that they understand, and by reflecting on its meaning in their lives. It will most likely be held in Kernaghan Hall. We are looking for a few adults to create a team. No formal training is needed but there will be some basic instruction and of course you will need Virtus Training. SRB will be glad to help with those. For more information, contact Trina Eifert or pnteifert@sbcglobal.net. 5 The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Page 5 To Our St. Robert Bellarmine Parish Family, We want to extend to you our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and support over the past 4 years of Deacon formation. Words cannot adequately express our thanks for all the preparations that went into yesterday's Mass of Thanksgiving and the reception that followed. The decorations and the abundance of food and friendship literally took our breath away. We are richly blessed. It will be an honor and a privilege to walk with you on this new journey and we humbly look forward to serving the faith community here at St. Robert's. Deacon Bill and Ginger Members of the Saint Robert Bellarmine Parish Council were able to take part in the Vicariate IV welcoming mass at St. Domitilla in Hillside for Archbishop Blase Cupich. It was a beautiful liturgy with readings, music and petitions in several languages demonstrating the vast cultural richness of our Vicariate. It was definitely a warm welcome for our new Archbishop. Vicariate IV has 61 Parishes, 33 Elementary Schools, 7 High Schools and 1 University. Pictured from left to right: Deacon Tony Delgado, Jane Hearrin, Fr. Many fathers feel a deep loss and sadness due to the abortion of their child. At The Women s Center, we reduce the number of abortions by approximately 1,000 babies saved each year. We are able to do this because of the counseling, and spiritual and material help which you enable us to provide our mothers and fathers. Have you felt God calling you to serve in the pro-life mission field? The Women s Center is looking for new volunteers Monday-Friday, between 9am-5pm, at our Cicero Ave. location. We especially need volunteers to greet clients in our lobby on Thursday 1-4pm and Friday 9am-4pm. We would love to find a retired man who is handy and able to lift up to 40 pounds to distribute baby furniture on Wednesday or Thursday, 10am-2pm. We also have an excellent opportunity for one to four people (individuals or friends) to work together prepping baby bottles for our spare change campaign, any day, Monday through Friday, between 9am-5pm. If you have questions about these areas and are interested in volunteering, please contact Paige at or pscarlett@womens-center.org. We need 2 walkers, 2 toddler beds, 4 strollers, 1 double stroller, 8 pack n plays, 3 swings, 2 bassinets and 6 infant car seat/carriers. It will be a great help if you can deliver these to us. For our address, or if a pick-up by a volunteer is needed, please call The families who receive these things are grateful for your generosity. We can use maternity clothes, size 6 diapers and crib sheets. These things must be delivered to us unless accompanied by baby furniture.
