Presence Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center is in need of 4-5 volunteer Ministers of Care (mandated by Chicago Archdiocese). The commitment is one time per week; it usually takes about 30 minutes. You ll find it is very rewarding! For information, call Chaplain Bob Shuford, Coordinator of Spiritual Services at FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER In the Acts of the Apostles, Paul and Barnabas journey to Antioch to proclaim the good news to the community. Rejected by the Jewish people, they turn to the Gentiles, echoing the prophet Isaiah that they are to be a light to the Gentiles, an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth. The Gentiles are delighted to receive the word and glorify God. In response the Jewish leaders stir up a persecution and expel Paul and Barnabas from the region. In his Revelation, St. John sees a great multitude standing before the throne of God, wearing white robes and waving palm branches. The elders around the throne tell John that the multitude are the ones who have survived the time of great distress and washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. The Lamb, who sits on the throne, will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving water. In the reading from John s gospel Jesus says that his sheep hear his voice and follow him and he gives them eternal life. Jesus says that no one can take them from him because God himself has given them to him, and no one can take them from the Father's hand. Acts 13:14, Revelation 7:9, 14b-17 John 10:27-30 SAINT FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI NATIONAL SHRINE REOPENED IN CHICAGO After being closed for 10 years, the National Shrine dedicated to the first American saint in our country, has reopened and is beginning a new ministry as a stand-alone center for prayer, education, spiritual care, and worship. The Shrine is open every day of the week on Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m.; Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 4:00 p.m. (Sunday Vigil Mass) on Saturdays and 10:00 a.m. on Sundays. 3 4th Sunday of Easter Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today, the Fourth Sunday of Easter, is also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, reflecting Jesus promise in the gospel to always shepherd his flock. The passage from John s gospel consists of only four verses, yet packs an incredible promise and challenge for all believers. The promise is that he gives his followers eternal life and that they will never perish. The challenge is that this promise is only made to those who recognize his voice and follow him. Jesus says that his sheep hear his voice. We hear his voice through the proclamation of sacred scripture. We hear in the Acts of the Apostles the story of Paul and Barnabas going out to preach the Word to new territories, promising the availability of God s salvation to all people. The Gentiles rejoice and glorify God; and we are told that all who were destined for eternal life came to believe. The ones who are destined for eternal life are the ones who truly believe and live that faith. Listen again to the words of the gospel: My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me. Jesus knows our hearts, and we cannot hide from the Holy Spirit. It is only by the grace and gift of the Holy Spirit that we are able to hear the voice of Christ in our hearts and to be transformed by it. The Holy Spirit guides us into the mystery of God s love and draws us into relationship with him. In the biblical sense, knowing someone is not a fact of simple recognition of another person, but rather an intimate relationship based on mutual love and esteem. It is only in following Jesus that we are truly in relationship with God and hence can be known by him. Of course, in another sense, God knows everything, including the secret depths of our hearts and knows who truly loves him and who does not. St. John tell us in the Book of Revelation that the followers of Jesus, the ones who receive eternal life and are sheltered around the throne of God, are those who have survived the time of great distress and have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. The challenge of faith is to follow Christ; even, or perhaps, especially when times are tough and God seems far away. To know him as he knows us is to love as he loves, to empty ourselves so that we may live in love and service to the gospel through love and service to others. The Contemporary Mass at 5:30 p.m. on Sundays, a joint effort of our parish with Our lady of Victory and St. Pascal, continues to grow. The contemporary ensemble which provides the wonderful music is looking for new members, particularly singers (no experience necessary; only a desire to make a joyful noise unto the Lord ) and guitarists. Simply show up at the church on Sunday at 4 p.m. for practice. We are also looking for new lectors and Eucharistic ministers to expand our roster. All are welcome. Thank you to the Parents Association for sponsoring Graziano Nite last Monday and to the Sports Board for all their hard work on the Comedy Nite. I hope to have an update on both these events next week. Thanks go to the Liturgical Ministers for hosting Coffee and Donuts after mass today. I will also be giving a special Sports Team Blessing at the 10 a.m. mass today for all our student athletes. I would like to thank all the coaches and volunteers who make our sports program a wonderful experience for the children. Speaking of sports, please save the date on Sunday, May 19th for the Dedication of the new Gym Floor immediately following the noon mass. We are grateful for the generosity of Joe and Diane Jensen who made it possible. Our Adult Faith Formation series, Conversations on Faith, concludes this Wednesday evening. There will be a presentation on Catholic social teaching Why Does the Church have a Preferential Option for the Poor? After the presentation there will be a conversation on how we integrate this into our lives and time for questions. Our social justice teachings are rooted in the respect for all human life, beginning in Genesis 1:26-28, when God made men and women in his own image and likeness and blessed them. Details can be found on page five. Next Saturday, April 27, the school will be hosting an Open House for Pre-School and Kindergarten age children from 10 a.m. until noon. Please call the school for more information. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
