The reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds the people that Christ offered the sacrifice for sins and is seated forever at the right hand of God. In the gospel reading, Jesus tells his disciples that after the great tribulation he will return in glory to gather his elect from the ends of the earth. Daniel 12:1-3 Hebrews 10:11-14, 18 Mark 13:24-32 Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) The poverty rate in America has increased, with over 40 million Americans living in poverty. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) funds programs in communities across the country where people living in poverty join together to identify problems, make decisions and find ways to improve their lives and their neighborhoods. When we attend to the needs of those in want, we give them what is theirs, not ours. More than performing works of mercy, we are paying a debt of justice. (Pope St. Gregory the Great, Regula Pastoralis, 3, 21: PL 77, 87) CCHD addresses the root causes of poverty by funding organizations that: Work to decrease youth violence Work to increase access to affordable housing Advocate for the rights of seniors, immigrants, workers and people with disabilities Extend health care to the poor and uninsured, especially pregnant women Defend the dignity of human life at all stages and circumstances The second collection this weekend will be to support the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Thank you for your generosity.
3 Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Our scriptures today foretell the coming of the end of time. Most of us don t worry about when Christ is coming back, but we should all be concerned about the moment we stand before God. Whether Christ returns during our lifetime, or whether that time is at the hour of our death, we will each be held responsible for our actions in this life. Each year the Church gives us the opportunity to reflect seriously on our lives. The prophet Daniel tells us that the end of time will bring terrible tribulations, unsurpassed in distress. Some shall rise to eternal life and others to everlasting horror and disgrace. It is the wise who will shine brightly and those who live in justice will be like the stars forever. Jesus tells us that in the time of tribulation he will send out angels to gather his elect. Jesus tells us that no one, not even he himself, knows the day nor the hour of his return. It seems to me that we ought to live wisely according to the laws of God and act with justice towards everyone all the time. Then we need not fear the day of judgment but rejoice in it. St. Robert Bellarmine wrote that if we live well, we will die holy. He explained that living well meant to live according to the Covenant and to obey Jesus commandment to love God with all our heart and love our neighbor as ourselves. Right living, according to the will of God, is the definition of holiness. The wisdom and justice of God involve more than just avoiding sin or selfish behavior, but require an honest look at our priorities. How well do our values reflect the teachings of Christ? Do we live the Beatitudes? Are we generous and place our trust in the Lord, as did the widows in last week s scriptures? Do we really believe that we can shine brightly like the stars in heaven? If not, there s still time to change. Next Sunday, the Church celebrates the Feast of Christ the King, the end of the liturgical year, when we focus on Christ s return at the end of time. In reality, we invite Christ to come into our hearts every time we gather around the table as his people, every time we pray, and every time we see his face in our brothers and sisters. The Girl Scout Bake Sale was a tremendous success, raising $769 for the STRETCH Fund to help the needy in our parish. Thank you to the girls, their scout leaders, all who volunteered their time and those who baked and donated to the event. The School Veterans Day Program was held last Friday. It was a time for the students to invite family members and parishioners who are veterans and to thank them for their service to our country. It was also an opportunity for the veterans to share a little of themselves and about their experience serving in the military. I ask all of us to find concrete ways that we can support our veterans and active duty personnel during the holiday season and beyond. I hope to have some pictures for next week s bulletin. Our Music Director Dennis Costanzo will host a Piano Recital at 2 p.m. this afternoon. There will be a nice mix of opera, songs of art, and theatrical music selections. There will be a free will offering to benefit the SRB Music Program. Please see page nine for details. There will be a second collection this weekend for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development to help local communities work to alleviate poverty in our neighborhoods (see page two). Envelopes are in your packets and at the exits of the church. I am pleased to announce the formation of the SRB Domestic Violence Awareness Committee, created after Fr. Chuck Dahm s wonderful presentation two weeks ago. There will be a meeting Monday night at 7 p.m. in the Convent dining room for those interested in learning about or joining the committee. Please see the flyer on page seven for details.. The Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit our sharing parish Ascension/St. Susanna is ongoing through the holiday. Please bring non-perishable items to church or the rectory. Please see page four for details. Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Please save the dates for the School Holly Hobby Fair on Friday, December 7th, the PA Pancake Breakfast with Santa on Sunday, December 8th after the morning masses and the School Christmas Pageant on Friday, December 21st at 10:30 a.m. Have a great week. The concert is free and open to family, friends, parishioners and music lovers. A few of the (perhaps) most well-known selections from the program are Exultate, Jubilate by Mozart; The Erlkoenig by Schubert, Una Fortiva Lacrima by Donizetti; and Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens. There will also be selections composed by Rachmaninoff, J. S. Bach, and Beethoven. Italian, German, Russian, Latin, French and English language musical selections will be sung. The program will present the works in the musical era when they were composed: Baroque, Classical and Romantic era, followed by three American 20th Century pieces. The singers chose their own selections, from the musical eras, to share with you at this concert. Three of our parish cantors are the performers: Ms. Lillian Murphy, Soprano; Mr. Louis Santiago, Tenor; and Mr. Bryan Dahl, Bass. We hope you are able to attend this concert and we look forward to sharing this music with you. R Join our parish BEST EVER, a will help slow and on the busy season. Each day of an ... 7 Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 7 Can you spend an hour with God Eucharistic Adoration is adoring or honoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ. As Catholics we believe that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. In a deeper sense, it involves "the contemplation of the Mystery of Christ truly present before us". The third Wednesday of every month St. Robert s has Eucharistic adoration following the 8:30 am mass and ending with benediction at 5 pm. We are looking for volunteers that would be available to spend an hour with God in adoration during that time. Please call the rectory if you would be interested.

9 Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 9 Music Ministry Opportunities Perhaps you aren t able to join the music ministry directly. However, do you know of someone who might join in making music? You could be our ambassador simply by inviting your friends or family to join. Resurrection Choir The Resurrection Choir sings for funerals on weekdays and Saturday mornings. It is an informal style - come when you are able to sing, dressed however comfortable you choose as the choir wears robes. Choir The Choir rehearses Thursday nights from 7-9 PM in the hall. The choir sings at the 10 AM mass from September-May and sings at Holy Days - Christmas Eve, Easter, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, etc. This group sings in harmony. We could use a couple tenors and basses to support the men s harmony parts. Perhaps you know someone you could suggest join the choir? For those who can t make it every single week, that is OK. Come to the rehearsals and sing when you are able. It s not an absolute commitment of every single Thursday and Sunday. Our choir is a fun group and enjoy each other s company. Members often bring refreshments to the Thursday practices to share with each other. 5:30 PM Mass Rehearse Sunday at 5PM and sing for the 5:30 PM Mass. The attraction of participating in music at this mass is that there s no evening rehearsal during the week! Cantors Cantors lead the singing at mass. Qualities of a cantor include being a person of faith, reliable for practices and mass times and a willingness to stand up and sing in front of the congregation. To get involved, please contact our Music Ministry Director Dennis Costanzo Office Phone: dcostanzo@srb-chicago.org Save the Date December 17, :00 pm
