A Warm Welcome to our New Parishioners Mr. & Mrs. Brian Moore and Family Ms. Sophal Dam Mr. & Mrs. Michael Guerra and Family Mr. & Mrs. Jose Dominguez and Family Ms. Diane Galindo & Mr. Melchur Chavez and Family Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time In the reading from the prophet Isaiah the Lord speaks to Shebna, master of the royal palace. The Lord says that he is going to remove Shebna from his position and replace him with his servant Eliakim. The two men were officials in King Hezekiah s court. Shebna was found to be corrupt in some matter; and Isaiah reports that God will remove him from power and give the Key to the House of David to Eliakim. St. Paul tells the Romans of the immense richness of the wisdom of God. His judgments are inscrutable and his ways are unsearchable. God s plans can only be marveled at since no one can repay him for his gift of salvation. The gospel of Matthew reports one of the climactic gospel scenes with Jesus asking the apostles who the people proclaim him to be. St. Peter replies, you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus acknowledges Peter s claim saying that it has come directly from God. Jesus at the same moment presents Peter with the task of leadership, calling him the rock upon whom the Church will be built, and promising to give him the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love, where there is injury, pardon. -St. Francis of Assisi Millions of our Iraqi brothers and sisters are suffering displacement and terror from the Islamic State of Iraq and greater Syria (ISIS). Religious minorities, including Christians, Shia Muslims, and Turkmen are being attacked and murdered. The lives of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi families are in peril and in need of meaningful interventions to prevent further catastrophe. CRS is seeking support for humanitarian efforts, which are critical to protecting and saving lives immediately, as well as preparing for the needs ahead. Please pray for peace and unity and consider donating to Catholic Relief Services:
3 Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures ask each of us, individually, Who is God, for me?. We are each given an invitation into a relationship with God. Even though the scriptures intimately describe who God is, we often keep our understanding of God at an intellectual level, rather than on a personal level. The scriptures call us to reflect and to act on an intimate personal friendship with the Lord. In the first reading from the Prophet Isaiah, God says to Shebna, the Master of the Palace, I will thrust you from your office, I will place the key of the House of David on Eliakim s shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut; when he shuts, no one will open. It is a story that tells us that all authority comes from God. Shebna abused that authority and God held him accountable. The stewardship of the key to the palace is a prophecy that Jesus will hold the keys to the kingdom of heaven. In the Gospel Jesus asks Peter, Who do you say I am? Peter answers, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. This had been revealed to him by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is not an intellectual assent to Peter s belief in Jesus as the Messiah. As we will hear next week, Peter still has no clue what Jesus is talking about (Peter will object to Jesus prediction of his Passion). Peter s declaration of faith is a personal understanding that Jesus is his Lord and that he is called to live his life out of that realization. In response, Jesus gives Peter the keys to the kingdom. There are many implications of this for us and for the Church, but in the context of today s readings, we are called to live in the realization that Jesus is the Lord of our life. We may not always understand where God is leading but if we focus on our relationship with him and place our trust in him, he will give us, too, the keys to the kingdom. We often have a hard time putting our trust in God. We have a hard time truly believing that God himself wants a personal friendship with us. In his Letter to the Romans, St. Paul cries out Oh the depths of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! He has this personal feeling of absolute awe in the presence of God. He knows in his bones that God s ways and wisdom are far beyond his own. He asks (rhetorically) Who has known the mind of God? and Who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid? His answer, of course, is no one. Because of this interior understanding of God s total transcendence, Paul puts his complete trust in God s word and says, To him be the glory forever. If we can enter into the interior of our souls and sincerely seek the Lord, the Holy Spirit will give us this reverence and draw us more deeply into a trusting relationship with him. The summer is rapidly drawing to a close. I hope you all had some time for vacation, family and friends. I spent a few days with some close friends in Atlanta earlier this month. While the pace of parish life has been slower in recent weeks, we have accomplished a lot. The biggest project was the remodeling of the school lunchroom, creating a beautiful space for the computer lab, science lab and new library. The construction was finished mid-week, leaving very little time to prepare for the opening of school. The remodeling was necessary in order to free up classrooms in the school due to our increased enrollment of the past two years (the city will not allow full time classrooms below ground level). Big thanks go to Kim Nigro, who donated many, many hours as the architect and project coordinator for the parish. The faculty returned this past week to get ready for the new year and to settle into the classrooms. The new family reception was held this past Tuesday night to welcome our new school families to the community and to introduce them to the various school organizations. School classes begin tomorrow. While I hate to see the summer end, it is always exciting to welcome everyone as we begin an exciting new year for both the school and the parish organizations. The Parish Picnic is this afternoon. It is a great way to kick off the new year and get geared up. I hope everyone will have a good time. I am grateful to the members of the Parish Pastoral Council and all the volunteers who have worked so hard to make this event possible. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

6 Page 6 August 24, 2014 Unaccompanied Children at the Border Who are they? It is a nearly 3,000-mile journey from Southern Honduras to the southernmost tip of Texas, a region called the Rio Grande Valley, where most unaccompanied migrant children from Central America enter the United States. Over 50,000 children have already arrived in Most children begin their journey by bus, often accompanied by a coyote, or human trafficker, which costs a few thousand dollars. They stop at safe houses along the way that are usually crowded. An unaccompanied child is one who lacks immigration status, is under 18, and who is present without a parent or legal guardian. The average age is dropping: children under age 10 are now making the dangerous journey predominantly from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras and Mexico. Why are they coming? Honduras and El Salvador, where there are more gang members than police officers and extreme violence, cannot adequately protect children, who are left extremely vulnerable (93% of crimes perpetrated against youth go unpunished). Many children leave for the possibility of family reunification and/or in search of educational and economic opportunities. Mexico has no foster care system for asylum-seeking children and a lack of children s shelters. The children are often left in detention centers with adults or they seek deportation to try again. Facts 48% of children are affected by violence such as cartels, gangs, and the state 21% of children survived abuse and violence in the home 38% of children from Mexico are exploited in the criminal human smuggling industry Up to 72% of children may have more than compelling reasons to receive asylum What are they risking to come here? The journey north to the border finds children in danger of drug traffickers, human traffickers, corrupt law enforcement, and gang activity. Girls are routinely raped on the journey and gang violence along the route is common. The children who are able to cross into the United States are being held in detention centers at the border and at other federal facilities, such as military bases. Immigration policy does not require the state to supply an attorney, often leaving children dealing with trauma to represent themselves in deportation hearings. Take Action: (1) Pray for the children and their families, and (2) Join with the Archdiocese of Chicago in supporting the response of Catholic Charities in these border states to the needs of the children. The Archdiocesan Office for Immigrant Affairs, working in collaboration with the Priests for Justice for Immigrants in Chicago, are gathering financial donations to send to Catholic Charities in San Antonio. Please make checks to Office for Immigrant Affairs, and send to 3525 South Lake Park Ave., Chicago IL Please be sure to write on the envelope and check: for unaccompanied children.
