The Lord tells Jeremiah to be brave in the face of opposition. Even though the leaders of Israel will fight against him, they will not prevail because the Lord himself will tell him what to say and will be his shield in times of trouble. The second reading is perhaps the best known from all of St. Paul s letters. He tells the Corinthians that Love is patient, love is kind... it bears all things,... hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. St. Paul is secure in the knowledge that God knows and loves him. In Luke s gospel, we read the continuation of last week s story of Jesus teaching in the temple. He proclaims that the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled in their hearing, that he is the Messiah. All are amazed. But the people ultimately do not believe him because, after all, isn t he merely the son of Joseph the carpenter? Jesus tells them that a prophet is never believed in his native place. The people are furious with him and cast him out of town. Jeremiah 1:4-5, Corinthians 12:31 13:13 Luke 4:21-30 Feast of the Presentation of the Lord The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord commemorates when, at eight days old, Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. The significance of this feast is that in bringing Jesus to the Temple and naming him as his son, Joseph becomes his legal father, making Jesus truly the Son of David and heir to the Messianic Prophecy. The Presentation of the Lord is the Fourth Joyful Mystery of the Rosary, helping us to remember the great events of salvation history in the Incarnation. The prophet Malachi, announcing the coming of the messenger to prepare the way of the Lord, says that the Messiah will be like a refiner s fire, purifying the children of Levi to restore the kingdom to the favor of the Lord. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews says that Jesus freely accepted his own death according to our human nature, to free humanity from slavery to sin and death. In the Gospel, the Holy Spirit sends Simeon into the Temple to take the baby Jesus in his arms, bless him and announce that he has seen the salvation of Israel. The prophetess Anna confirms the message saying that this child is the redemption of Jerusalem. Malachi 3:1-4 Hebrews 2:14-18 Luke 2:22-40

3 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures call us to truly listen to the Word of God. Since salvation depends on faith in Christ, we must listen to, and believe his words. God calls us by name to enter into a covenant relationship of love and fidelity. This covenant relationship is fully realized in the mutual and total self-giving love expressed in the inner life of God. God makes it possible for us to enter into that relationship through the salvific death and resurrection of his Son. Through faith we are invited to enter into that covenant relationship. God already knows our innermost being. He invites us to get to know him (listening to his Word) and enter into this covenant relationship (believing his Word and allowing that Word to transform us into the image of his Son). The call of Jeremiah to prophecy was God s reminder to the Israelites that they had abandoned that Covenant. God promises to give Jeremiah the words to say, the strength to stand up to opposition, and his promise that he will be protected. God keeps his promise. Significantly, the Lord tells Jeremiah that the people will not listen to him. As a result of their hard-heartedness and dependence on their own strength, the nation is overcome, the Temple is destroyed, and the people are exiled to captivity in Babylon. This is a good reminder for us that there are pretty harsh consequences for failure to listen and believe the Word of God. The people of Jesus time in his home town were no different. As we read last week, Jesus is in the synagogue and has proclaimed that the prophecy of Isaiah has been fulfilled in their hearing. This prophecy is nothing less than God s promise to deliver his people and fulfill his covenant. At first the people are amazed. But when they realize that Jesus is declaring himself to be the Messiah, they become incensed. They cannot believe that a mere mortal, especially someone they are familiar with, could be the Chosen One of God. Jesus reminds them of the miracles he has performed as signs of God s power and fidelity. He says that a prophet is never received in his native place. After Jesus compares himself to Elijah and Elisha, the greatest of the prophets, the people were so angry that they tried to drive him out of town and tried to kill him. It seems to be fallen human nature that we don t want to believe anything beyond our own wisdom and preconceived ideas. God calls us to a greater vision, to trust in what we do not understand because God himself has spoken. St. Paul gives us the key to trusting in God s Word. Because he is known and loved by God, he turns his whole life over to acting on God s Word. St. Paul knows that he is known by God because of his experience of Christ. We experience Christ first by hearing his Word; by making it the vision for our life, we are drawn into the personal knowledge that God knows and loves us, too. Last Sunday the school held an Open House in the gym, showcasing the work of our students and all the wonderful programs that make our school such a wonderful place for Catholic education and formation. Catholic Schools Week had a variety of fun events, including a sing-a-long, spelling bee and talent show. Thank you to all our faculty, staff, school board, parent ambassadors and volunteers who contributed their time and effort. This coming weekend the Parents Association will host Bingo Night on Saturday. This is an important fundraiser for our school as well as a fun time. Please see page six for details. The Feast of St. Blase is this Wednesday, The Blessing of Throats will take place during the 8:30 mass. Today we will hear the Archbishop s homily on the Annual Catholic Appeal at all masses. The Annual Catholic Appeal supports the public ministries of the archdiocese that no individual parish could do alone. The Appeal is the largest source of grants and scholarships for our parish schools as well as for capital grants for disadvantaged parishes. None of the funds collected for the appeal will be used for expenses related to the misconduct scandals. Every parish has a goal of 6% of ordinary income. Our goal this year is $34,552. Every dollar above that amount is returned to the parish. For the next two weekends we will be conducting a pledge drive during the masses. This is not simply a second collection. We will not have a second collection for the Appeal. It is an annual pledge that may be paid over the next twelve months. Please read the Archbishop s letter, as well as the brochure that are in the church pews and vestibules, and prayerfully consider a sacrificial commitment. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago is looking for helpful, friendly volunteers to serve as greeters at the hospitality table at 721 N. LaSalle St. in Chicago. The volunteers will welcome guests and help with the intake of clothing donations. The volunteer would serve a 2 or 3 hour shift on a Monday, Thursday, or Friday of their choice between 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. For more information volunteer@catholiccharities.net or call the Volunteer Relations department at DO YOU HAVE AN HOUR TO SPEND WITH OUR LORD? Adoration is the first attitude of man acknowledging that he is a creature before his Creator. It exalts the greatness of the Lord who made us and the almighty power of the Savior who sets us free from evil. Adoration is homage of the spirit to the "King of Glory," respectful silence in the presence of the "ever greater" God... Catechism of the Catholic Church, no Adoration draws us more deeply into the joy of our relationship with the living God. Eucharistic Adoration is usually held on the third Wednesday of every month. It begins after the 8:30 am mass and closes with Benediction at 5 pm. Volunteers are always needed. Would you be able to join us? If interested, please call the rectory at

Course participants will explore how we live out our Christian faith as we ask ourselves if the historical Jesus who walked on this earth faced the same challenges that we do today? What was his walk like? How did Jesus come to understand his special relationship to God? Why was Jesus life and message accepted by some and rejected by the most powerful nation of his time? Is there a relationship between our struggles today and what Jesus faced in his world? All community members are welcome to participate. Classes will meet at Resurrection College Prep High School on the following Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 pm: February 23, March 8, March 22 and April 5, The cost is $50 - to register for the course, please contact Alisa Martorano at Ext 142 or amartorano@reshs.org.
