St. Peter realizes that God s gift of salvation is open to all people; and he begins to tell all those present of God s salvific plan in Jesus. He explains that God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power. He was put to death, only to have God raise him from the dead three days later. St. Peter tells them that he himself is a witness of Jesus mighty deed. He says that Jesus has been appointed by God to judge the living and the dead; and that all who believe in him will receive forgiveness of sins through him. The Letter of St. Paul to the Colossians encourages the listeners to seek after God, that which is above, reminding them that they have already died and risen with Christ. They have died to their old way of life and are now protected by God as they await Christ s return, when they too will appear with him in glory. The gospel reading from John tells us that Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early in the morning and found it empty. She immediately reports this to Peter and the disciple who Jesus loved. The disciples raced to the tomb. Peter enters first. Then the beloved disciple enters. Scripture tells us that he saw and believed. But Peter and the others did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. Like the beloved disciple, we, too, are invited to see the empty tomb and believe in the joy of the Resurrection. Acts 10:34, Colossians 3:1-4 John 20:1-9 The Octave of Easter The Easter season runs for seven weeks through Pentecost. But we also celebrate the Octave of Easter (the seven days of the week of Easter plus next Sunday) as a heightened celebration because the joy of salvation, the good news of the gospel, is too good to confine to one day. Each of these days is a Solemnity of the Lord. Each day the gospel tells the story of one of the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus. It is these appearances of Christ to his followers that formed the foundation of the faith of the early Church. The empty tomb that was seen on Easter morning is simply an empty tomb without the witness to the appearances of the Risen Lord. As we heard in our gospel this morning, neither Peter nor Mary Magdalene, who saw the empty tomb, understood that Jesus had risen. It is only after Jesus comes to them that they understand and believe. We are called to believe in the words of Jesus, his story as written in the sacred Scriptures, and in the testimony of those who witnessed him risen from the dead. While these days are not days of obligation, they are holy days that lead us deeper into the mystery of our faith. Everyone is encouraged to continue the Easter celebration at daily mass throughout the week.

3 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Alleluia! He is Risen! Rejoice! Welcome to all visitors, family members and friends who come to share the joy of Easter with our faith community today. It is truly a great joy for me to see and to celebrate with you all on this most holy and happy day of the year. After six weeks of Lent, the Alleluia and the Gloria return to the liturgy as we shout out with great joy the good news of salvation. Rejoice! The promise proclaimed on Laetare Sunday three weeks ago is fulfilled today. Christ is risen! Jesus has destroyed the power of sin and death. The promise of Christmas is fulfilled. Christ, who came down from heaven to join our human family, rises to heaven so that we may join the divine family of God. The Lenten journey is complete and we have arrived at the baptismal font of our salvation. John s gospel story of the resurrection is curious in what it does not say. Neither Mary Magdalene nor the Apostles see the Risen Christ. What they witness is an empty tomb. St. John sees the rolled up burial cloths, the absence of the corpse; and he believes. It is only later that the apostles see the Risen Christ; and he remains with them, teaching them, strengthening them and leaving them with the Holy Spirit. It is because of the eye-witness accounts of the apostles that we believe that Christ is truly risen. And yet John s witness of faith is prior to any actual evidence. This is important for us because we all face the same choice. When we see the empty tomb, the absence of any physical evidence of God s presence in our life, do we choose to believe? The Scriptures, Sunday mass, the Sacraments and above all, the Eucharist, are given to strengthen us in our times of doubt. After the dark of night comes the light of day. After the doubt of desolation comes the consolation of God s presence. After the sadness of death comes the joy of resurrection. The Easter Proclamation, sung last night at the Vigil Mass, rings out the wonderful news. Jesus Christ, our King, is risen. Sound the trumpet of salvation! Rejoice, O earth, in shining splendor, radiant in the brightness of your King! Christ has conquered! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes forever! The Risen savior shines upon you! Rejoice! Exult in glory! The risen Savior shines upon you! Let this place resound with joy, echoing the mighty song of all God s people! Let these words fill you with joy. Keep these words in your hearts and know the power and glory of God s love for you. May the joy and blessings of Easter remain with you always. Our RCIA Elect, Rose Guagliardo, was received into the Church last night at the Easter Vigil. She is now called a neophyte, from the Greek word for newly received. Please continue to keep her in your prayers. Many thanks to the Liturgical Ministers, Art and Environment Committee and all the volunteers who decorated our church so beautifully and to those who prepared our Holy Week and Easter liturgies. The musicians, singers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers, sacristan and all our volunteers did a wonderful job. These beautiful liturgies don t happen by themselves. It takes a lot of people to volunteer a lot of time and effort. Thank you for all you do. I d also like to thank everyone who contributed to the Easter Flower collection last weekend. These beautiful flowers really add a sense of joy to our celebrations. There is still time to make a contribution to our Lenten Mission Appeal for the McKenna Technical Institute (MTI) in Haiti. Your donations will help provide scholarships to the children at the orphanage to further their education. Please drop off your check or mail it to the rectory. The latest update on MTI can be found on page six. The Solemnity of the Annunciation, commemorating the Archangel Gabriel s visit to the Virgin Mary inviting her to be the mother of our Savior, will be celebrated on Monday, April 4th this year. The actual feast day is March 25th, which was Good Friday. The celebration has been moved to the first available day following the Octave of Easter. While not a Holy Day of Obligation, this feast begins the mystery of the incarnation. We will have a special mass this year hosted by the Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the Red Ribbon Gala on Saturday, April 9th, at Poretta s Banquet Hall. Tickets are on sale after mass and at the rectory. Details can be found on page eight. May the blessings of the Risen Christ be with you and your families this Easter and throughout the year. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

6 Page 6 March 27, 2016 McKenna BioScience Program Opens at the University of Notre Dame Hinche The fall of 2015 was an exciting time for our longtime partner the McKenna Technical Institute as they opened up the first Bio Science program in Haiti. They did so in partnership with the University of Notre Dame Hinche. Maison Fortune is pleased to have 8 MFO alumni enrolled in this first time 2 year-program. The students will receive hands-on laboratory training and develop the skills necessary to work in the bioscience industry. The school is outfitted with a fully equipped Bioscience Lab where students apply critical thinking in data analysis including the interpretation of experimental results. We are extremely grateful for the partnership with McKenna Technical and their commitment to help assist with the cost of tuition for our MFO alumni. Together with our MFOF supporters we believe that the power of education can transform Haiti and its future. (This photo was taken after grades 1-4 sang at the Christmas Eve Family Mass) Thank you to our school children for making our Easter celebrations beautiful. Thank you also to the family members that offered rides and came to hear the children singing. We are reminded, by their joyful singing, of King Davis s psalm: Make a joyful noise unto the Lord! Reminder. Our online payment partner is GiveCentral.org, a secure interface for making donations to our parish.
