Oleksy Mr. & Mrs. Thuan Van Tran and Family Nineteenth the Sunday in Ordinary Time In the reading from the First Book of Kings, Elijah, fleeing from the wicked Queen Jezebel, arrives at Mt. Horeb in search of God. The Lord instructs Elijah to go outside the cave he had entered, presumably to receive God s instruction and blessing. Elijah waits while a strong wind, earthquake and fire occur around him, with none containing God s presence. Finally, Elijah recognizes God in a tiny whispering sound, and in humility hides his face. St. Paul, in his Letter to the Romans, tells of his personal sorrow because of his fellow Jews rejection of Jesus. He says he would even trade his own salvation for his kindred to be in Christ. St. Paul tells of the blessings received by the Israelite people: adoption by God, given the Covenant, the Law, proper worship, the patriarchs, and, ultimately, Christ himself. For St. Paul all these other gifts meant nothing unless one accepts Jesus as the Messiah. In Matthew s gospel today Jesus instructs the disciples to take a boat to the other side of the lake after he feeds and dismisses the crowds. He then goes up a mountain to be alone and pray. Jesus later finds the disciples being tossed about by waves and so he came toward them walking on the sea. Initially they were terrified, crying It is a ghost and Jesus calms their fears saying, it is I; do not be afraid. Peter says, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. Peter begins walking on the water towards Jesus but becomes frightened and starts to sink. He cries out, Lord, save me! Jesus saves him and asks,... why did you doubt? The others in the boat now give homage to Jesus and confess him to be God s Son. 1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a Romans 9:1-5 Matthew 14:22-33 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary We will celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary this Friday, August 15. This Feast commemorates the Virgin Mary being taken up to heaven at the time of her death. In life she was free from sin; at the Assumption her body was preserved from the corruption of death. This celebration is a promise from God that gives us the hope that we will be transformed, rising from the dead and given our own glorified bodies in heaven. In the Book of Revelation we hear of a sign appearing in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun and wearing a crown of stars on her head. St. Paul tells the Corinthians that the resurrection of the dead comes from Christ and he will destroy the power of death forever. In Luke s gospel we hear Mary proclaiming the greatness of the Lord, rejoicing in God her Savior. All generations will call her blessed because the Almighty has done great things for her. Her glory comes from her reception of the grace of God. That same glory awaits us all. Revelation 11:19, 12:1-6, 10 1 Corinthians 15:20-27 Luke 1:39-56

3 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Our scripture readings today tell us that God does indeed come to our aid but often not in ways we expect. We often miss the blessings of God because we are looking in the wrong places. The scriptures remind us that we need to have the right vision, trusting in God on God s terms, not ours. In the reading from the First Book of Kings, Elijah flees to Mt. Horeb for deliverance. God tells him to wait before the Lord and he will show up. Elijah was given three signs that usually foreshadow the power of God: strong winds, an earthquake and fire. But God was not present in any of these. Finally, there was a tiny whispering sound. Elijah went out and he saw the Lord. In the Gospel, the disciples are in a boat as the winds and the storms surround them. They saw Jesus walking across the water and they were terrified. Jesus tells them Do not be afraid; it is I St. Peter doubts and tells him that if you truly are the Lord, bid me to walk on water and come to you. He is asking for a miracle. When Jesus says Come, Peter is able to walk on the water. But as soon as he sees the storms and the waves his fear returns and he starts to sink. We, too, often doubt. I think it is largely because we are insufficiently grateful; we take God s blessings for granted. These attitudes are usually subconscious. We don't mean to be ungrateful, but we get caught up in the world. We unconsciously put our faith in the things of this world: our possessions, the technological wonders of the culture, modern medicine, the security and freedom we enjoy in this nation. And when anything goes wrong, we tend to complain that bad things are happening to us. We lose a job, we or someone we love gets sick, the electricity goes out, people don t do what we want them to the list is endless. And usually we ask Why is this happening?, or even worse, Why is God doing this to me? Our vision is wrong. These are the wrong questions to ask. Looking around the world we see people who are much worse off than we. Many people around the world don t have electricity, jobs, social security or freedom. Yet many of them are happy and fulfilled. I think it is because they accept reality for what it is and are grateful for what they have. This is the vision that we should have in our own lives. An even better question to ask is, Where is God in this? Elijah knew that God was present when he heard the tiny whispering sound. We need to listen for the voice of God in our lives. This is a process that takes time. We need to make a habit of spending time in prayer and meditation (listening for God). Like St. Peter, we expect God to come in a big way and perform miracles in our lives. We need to be more like Elijah and see God s presence in the small, everyday moments of our lives. When we put our trust in the ways of the world we lose the presence of God in our lives. When we base our happiness on the security the world offers then we lose the salvation that God offers. We are to put our faith and trust in God first, seeking him early in the morning and walking with him each day. It takes a conscious effort on our part to look for God and to know that he is with us. When we make it a habit we will become more grateful and we will be more aware of God s presence in our lives. Jesus rescued Peter from drowning and asked him why he doubted. God will rescue us, but if we doubt we will drown. At the end of the gospel the disciples paid him homage and exclaimed, Truly, you are the Son of God. Too often we take Jesus for granted so we miss out on the experience of him in our lives. We need to rediscover the sense of awe and wonder at the power of God s love. And we need to watch for his presence in the ordinary events of our daily lives. Brother Roger from the Franciscan Friars will be here this weekend to conduct the Summer Mission Appeal. He will tell us about the missionary and evangelization work his order does in Jamaica. There will be a second collection at all the masses today. The Blood Drive will be held in Kernaghan Hall today from 9 am until 2 pm. Walk-ins are welcome. On Friday, August 15th we will celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Solemnity is a Holy Day of Obligation this year. Our mass times are at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

The keyboard can be a basic student model with an adaptor and, hopefully, an X stand to support it. FYI: We don't have the available space for a piano, sorry.
