Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Feast of the Holy Family The writer of the Book of Sirach gives us practical advice on living out our role within our own family. The father is set in honor over his children while the mother holds authority over them. Children are to honor their parents and care for them when they age. St. Paul continues this theme writing to the Colossians telling them about how husbands, wives and children should relate to one another. He tells them to be kind, compassionate, humble, patient, thankful and forgiving. And, above all, they are to put on love. In a sense, love is who they are to become. The gospel of Luke shows the Holy Family following the religious duty by bringing the child Jesus to the Temple to be consecrated to the Lord. While they do this, devout worshippers, Simeon and Anna, display incredible joy upon encountering the child and then reveal Jesus role in our salvation. On this first Sunday of the Christmas season we gather and recall how holiness does not lie in extraordinary works, but in living a life of faith each day. We remember the faith of our ancestors, celebrate the faith of the Holy Family, and pray that our own families are led to a stronger faith. Sirach 3:2-6, Colossians 3:12-17 Luke 2:22-40 Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God celebrates and affirms that Jesus, though born of a human mother, truly is divine. This dogma of the Church was proclaimed at the Council of Ephesus in 431 and reaffirmed at the Council of Chalcedon in 451, the last of the patristic ecumenical councils recognized by virtually all Christian denominations. The controversy was intense as many devout people tried to protect the transcendence of the one true God, asking how could the eternal God be born of a creature. These Councils affirmed that God s ways are beyond our human comprehension and that he revealed his plan of salvation to us through Jesus Christ. Jesus, uniquely, is both fully human and fully divine. We cannot comprehend how this is so, but we believe that it is true and Jesus is the true source of our salvation. In the Book of Numbers, God tells Moses that he will bless his people and will let his face shine upon them. Jesus will be the true face of God whose light shines upon us. St. Paul tells us that Jesus is the Son of God, born of a woman through the power of the Holy Spirit. In the gospel, the shepherds visit the Holy Family at the manger, telling Joseph and Mary that the Angel of the Lord revealed that their baby son is the Savior of the world. Numbers 6:22-27 Galatians 4:4-7 Luke 2:16-21

3 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. This feast continues our celebration of Christmas. Jesus was born into our human family to sanctify our families. When we honor the Holy Family, we honor our own families by seeking to imitate their mutual love. We look to Jesus, Mary and Joseph as a model to teach us love, respect, honor and sacrifice for one another. We seek their prayers to help us in our family relationships. In the Incarnation we participate in the Divine Exchange ; God joins our human family so that we may join his divine family. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph mirrors the Divine Family of Father, Son and Holy Spirit in that the three are truly one in a divine relationship of love. Just so, our families, though made up of many members, are still to be one family, united in love. The scriptures today give us some guidance on how family members should treat one another. The reading from Sirach is a commentary on the Fourth Commandment. We should remember that he speaks of God s will, not just some maxim that we can choose to ignore. Parents have honor and authority over their children. We are called to honor our parents, to take care of them when they are old, even if they become infirm in mind or body. Since family relationships are based on the love of God, we should accept these responsibilities as labors of love not as burdens or as inconveniences. Interestingly, this Commandment is the only one that comes with a specific promise from God: that you may have long life in the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you. We are being promised eternal life. The patience and love we show our parents will be rewarded as we are more closely conformed to the divine image in which we were created. St. Paul echoes this theme in his Letter to the Colossians as he describes the virtues of a healthy relationship. We are to show compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. We are to bear with one another and forgive one another just as God has forgiven us. And above all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. St. Paul really challenges us to act on our faith, especially when it is difficult and especially toward those we love. Husbands and wives are to be mutually loving and respectful, avoiding bitterness. Children are to obey their parents. Parents are not to provoke or discourage their children. St. Paul tells us that the key to all this is gratitude. If we are grateful for the people in our lives, the love they give us and how blessed we are to be loved, the grievances will not upset us out of proportion. Nor will our grievances cause us to lose perspective on what is truly important in life: the fact that we are in a relationship of love with one another and with God. The gospel tells us the wonderful story of the Presentation in the Temple (the fourth joyful mystery of the rosary). Joseph and Mary bring the infant Jesus to the Temple, fulfilling the Law of Moses. Joseph officially claims Jesus as his son, thereby fulfilling God s plan that the savior will come from the House of David (pretty clever of God, isn t it?). Simeon, a holy and devout man who has long been waiting for the fulfillment of the vision, takes the child in his arms and blesses him. His prayer of gratitude is recited every night by those who pray the breviary: Now, master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all peoples, a light for the revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel. The prophetess Anna, who has been waiting over sixty years for this moment, comes forth to confirm the message to Simeon, that this is indeed the child whom God has sent for the redemption of Jerusalem. I would like to thank everyone who helped with all our parish liturgical celebrations: the school teachers who prepared the students for the Christmas pageant; art and environment volunteers who decorated the church; the liturgical ministers (lectors, Eucharistic ministers, servers, choir members, musicians, ushers, and volunteers) who helped create our beautiful liturgies, the Ministers of Care who brought Holy Communion to the sick and the homebound. I apologize if I missed anyone. These events don t just happen. They are only possible through the generous gifts of time and talent of so many of our people. Thank you for all you do. The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God is celebrated on January 1st. The Vigil Mass will be on New Year s Eve at 4 p.m. The mass on New Year s Day will be at 9 a.m. (not a Holy Day of Obligation this year). I hope that everyone had a blessed Christmas, and that our children and faculty are enjoying a well-deserved vacation. Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy new year. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
