God says, Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love...to the land of Moriah. There...offer him up as a holocaust. Abraham follows God s directions and the moment before sacrificing his son, the Lord s messenger calls out to Abraham, telling him to not lay a hand on the boy because of his devotion to God. Because of Abraham s complete devotion and obedience to God, he is told he will be blessed abundantly and through his descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing. What seemed to lead to the failure of Abraham s hopes and dreams eventually leads to their fulfillment. St. Paul s letter of encouragement to the Romans liberates us today as it did Paul s followers. If God is for us, who can be against us? Paul explains that God did not spare his own son for our sakes. Therefore, if since it is God himself who acquits us, who then can condemn us? The gospel of Mark relates the story of the Transfiguration. Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain...and he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white. Elijah and Moses appear and converse with Jesus. A voice is heard coming from a cloud overshadowing them saying, This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. Jesus tells the disciples to keep the experience a secret until he rises from the dead. Genesis 22: 1-2, 9a, 10-13, Romans 8: 31b-34 Mark 9: 2-10 Lenten Almsgiving Mission Maison Fortune Orphanage in Haiti This year we will again be offering our Lenten sacrifice to aid the Orphanage in Haiti. Next weekend Paul Pasin will be with us to tell us what has been happening at the Maison Fortune Orphanage in Haiti. He will be speaking at all the masses. Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. Occupying the western third of the island of Hispaniola (the Dominican Republic makes up the rest of the island), Haiti is about the size of the state of Maryland with a population of 8 million people. The average annual income is only $400 per person, with an unemployment rate of nearly 80%. One child in ten dies before the age of five, mostly due to the lack of clean drinking water. The Orphanage is up in the mountains of the central highlands, serving both boys and girls, providing a safe home, clean beds and clothes, clean water, nutritious meals and medical care (the average health care spending per person is only $18 per year). The orphanage has its own school, providing primary education (also open to day students) that gives the children an opportunity to move on to higher education or job training. The McKenna Technical Institute provides vocational skills, primarily in biology and medical technology, for the older children who have graduated from the orphanage. This is our annual Lenten Almsgiving mission. Please be generous in your support of the children. Fr. Neil

Second Sunday in Lent Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. We hear St. Mark s version of the Transfiguration. In the Old Testament reading from the Book of Genesis, Abraham demonstrates his faith by his willingness to sacrifice Isaac, his only son, if God commands it. In his Letter to the Romans, St. Paul tells us that God sacrificed his only Son for our salvation and that God s son now intercedes for us in heaven. In the gospel, Jesus goes up the mountain and is transfigured, shining with a radiance that reflects his divine glory. The disciples see Jesus conversing with Moses and Elijah, fulfilling both the Law and the Prophets in his own person, thus proclaiming that he himself is the Messiah. The Transfiguration foretells both Jesus resurrection from the dead and our hope of eternal life, when our own bodies will be transfigured and glorified in heaven. The Transfiguration story takes on a whole different meaning in the context of Lent and the first two readings. Isaac is a Christ figure in the Old Testament. Abraham is willing to sacrifice his only son in obedience to the will of God. God never intended to allow Abraham to carry out the sacrifice. But God is willing to sacrifice his only Son. St. Paul tells us that God did not spare his own son as a sign of his love for us. But, like the story of Isaac, God does not will the sacrifice. God allows it. Jesus accepts the call to sacrifice himself out of obedience to the Father because he shares his Father s love for us. In the gospel, Jesus sets aside his glory. If Jesus were to ascend to heaven from the Transfiguration in his divinity then salvation would not be possible for humanity. In his humanity he goes down the mountain (he goes back into the world) and heads for Jerusalem. He willingly undertakes this journey of self-denial to the Cross to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. It is Jesus total self-emptying for the sake of fallen humanity that makes possible our rising back to God. It is this same self-denial that we seek during Lent that will allow us to rise to God as well. The Transfiguration gives the apostles hope after Jesus is crucified. When they finally believe the Resurrection, they recall the glorification of Christ. After the Resurrection, Jesus tells them that they will have to suffer the Cross as well if they want to be glorified with him. Our Lenten journey is a time to transform our vision so that we may willing embrace the Cross in our own lives. We seek to become transfigured spiritually into the image of Christ in this life and so attain eternal life with him in the next. There are still some Little Black Books of Daily Lenten Meditations available in the church or at the rectory. There are additional copies of Joe Paprocki s book 7 Keys to Spiritual Wellness still available as well. There is no charge for either of these books. This week s schedule of Lenten prayer opportunities can be found on page four. The Confirmation Retreat for the candidates and their sponsors was held on February 16th. The candidates are one step closer to the fullness of sacramental initiation. Confirmation will be celebrated on April 17th at Our Lady of Victory. Please keep the candidates, their sponsors and their families in your prayers. Last weekend s school Book Fair was a great success. Thank you to Mary Beth Gerlach and all the volunteers who worked so hard, encouraging our children and families to read. The Parents Association will be hosting our annual St. Patrick s Day Party this Saturday, March 7th. This is always a fun event with good food, good music and good friends. Tickets are available in the back of church today and at the rectory. The annual Four-Parish Mission will be held at Our Lady of Victory on March 9-11, Monday - Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Monsignor Richard Hynes is a wonderful spiritual leader who will preach this year, guiding us more deeply into our relationship with the Lord as we journey through Lent. This year s theme is A People Who Walk in Brightness: The Saints of Daily Life. This is an exciting event that you should not miss. Come for one, two, or all three evenings. More information is on page five. Next weekend Paul Pasin will be with us to speak about the Orphanage in Haiti. This is our Lenten Almsgiving project. Please read my short article about the Orphanage on page two. Archbishop Cupich has asked for input from the faithful in preparation for the upcoming Synod on the Family. Please read his letter on page six and complete the short questionnaire on page seven. Due to the short turn around time the surveys need to be returned to the rectory via or dropped off no later than Wednesday, March 4th. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Page 6 March 1, 2015 Archdiocese of Chicago Parish Consultation in Preparation for the Synod of Bishops The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and in the Contemporary World Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has called together two synods or meetings of representative bishops from throughout the world to consider the family. The first synod took place last fall, and the second will take place this coming October. Our own Archbishop Cupich has been named as an alternate delegate to the synod. As he prepares to offer a perspective to his fellow bishops in the United States and in turn to the Synod Office preparing for the November meeting in Rome, Archbishop Cupich wants to hear the voice of the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Consider using this brief survey to help him prepare for his work. Your pastor and parish staff will receive your comments and forward them to Archbishop Cupich. The theme of the synod is the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and in the contemporary world. The hope of the synod is to make the "gospel of the family" come alive in our world. That means to understand and live family life in such a way that the family becomes a privileged place where we meet God and God meets us. It also means that the family assumes its holy mission in the world to bring new life in Jesus Christ to others. In the complexities of our world and of family life itself, this is no easy task. Please share your reflections on these questions. The full documentation, called the Lineamenta or guidelines, along with discourses by Pope Francis and two articles, can be found at the archdiocesan website: Please either drop the Parish Consultation Form (found on the next page) at the rectory, or it srbrectory@gmail.com by Wednesday, March 4, 2015.

Second Sunday in Lent Page 7 Parish Consultation Form How has family life been a grace or a blessing from God for you? In what way does our American culture at this historical moment help or hinder our families from being the families that God wants them to be? In your experience, what are the main challenges that families face today? How can we as a Church respond to those challenges? Can you suggest ways that parishes can include and be more available to those who might be overlooked when we consider family life, for example, single people, the widowed, single parents, divorced or separated, those who identify as gay or lesbian, and others?

Page 8 March 1, 2015 St. Robert Bellarmine s Parents Association is hosting a Saturday, March 7, :30 pm in Kernaghan Hall. 9 Second Sunday in Lent Page 9 The season of Lent is a time for us to renew our relationship with God. We are reminded to spend some time in prayer and reflection. Please join us for an evening of song and quiet prayer in the style of Taizé on Friday, March 6 at 7:00 PM. All are welcome. St. John Berchmans, 2517 W. Logan Blvd, Chicago. ROSARIES WANTED FOR UGANDA During Lent this year, will you please donate for Uganda new, used, or broken rosaries that can be repaired. You can place the rosaries into the labeled collection containers in St. Robert Bellarmine s vestibules The rosaries will be given to four people: Fr. John Bosco Ssekkomo, who is assigned to a parish in the business area called Nateete in the capital Kampala; to Fr. Dennis Kasule of the rural village of Bunnamweri, which is located in south central Uganda and west of the capital Kampala; to Bishop Martin Wamika of Jinja, the second largest city of Uganda and located on Lake Victoria to the northeast of Kampala; and to an order of Franciscan nuns. They will make certain that the rosaries will go to the people in the rural areas in the interior of Uganda. Sacrifice, prayer, and almsgiving are Lenten practices that the Catholic Church asks us to perform to renew our discipleship in Christ. Your donation of new, used, or broken rosaries for Uganda is one way of performing Lenten almsgiving. In 2014 during Lent, the parishioners of St. Robert Bellarmine parish donated over one thousand rosaries for Uganda. More rosaries are still needed. Thank you for your support.
