"KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS will be here after all Masses this weekend! Donations accepted for SHAMROCK PINS to benefit Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT Today s readings tell us of God s blessings on his people. In the first reading God has delivered the people from slavery in Egypt and led them into the promised land. After celebrating the Passover they ate the produce of the land for the first time. In the second reading St. Paul tells the Corinthians that we are a new creation in Christ. God has given us this as a gift, reconciling us through Christ. We are to pass this gift on to others by our own ministry of reconciliation. In the gospel Luke gives us the story of the Prodigal Son. After squandering his family s wealth, the young man, in dire straits, decides to go home. His father welcomes him with open arms, proclaiming that which was lost had been found. The father throws a big celebration in gratitude for the return of his son. Joshua 5:9a, Corinthians 5:17-21 Luke 15:1-3, PRAYER FOR POPE BENEDICT XVI O God of all time, you created days of toil and repose. Graciously hear our prayer of gratitude for the ministry of your servant Benedict and grant him a time of rest from his labors. May he continue to be guided by your hand in his retirement, and know both health and peace. When his earthly days are done, may he see your glory and rest at last in you forever. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.
3 4th Sunday of Lent Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today is Laetare Sunday, a day of rejoicing during this penitential season as a reminder that we are drawing closer to the joy of Easter. Taken from the Introit (introduction), the Church echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah, Rejoice, Jerusalem! Rejoice with her, you who mourned, and you will find contentment. Today s readings remind us of the goodness of God and his compassion for us. In the first reading the Lord tells Joshua that he has removed the reproach (sin) of his people and is bringing them into the land he promised them. Their journey is over; they have come home. Today they will eat the fruit of the land. The manna ceases because the people have come into their own. God s providence had sustained them throughout their desert journey. God has now given them new blessings, providing them a rich and abundant land. Our Lenten journey is symbolic, not only of the wandering in the desert, but our journey through life. God s providence sustains us on our earthly journey. Christ gives us the sacraments as signs that God has removed our reproach and forgives our sins. The Eucharist is the food that sustains us on our journey until we come to the eternal banquet in heaven. Because we have received this great gift of salvation (which simply means that God has reconciled us to himself), St. Paul calls us to become the righteousness of God, reconciling through our own forgiveness of others, just as we have been forgiven. What was lost in the Garden of Eden (estrangement from God) is restored through the righteousness of Christ. Like the Israelites in the promised land, we are strangers and aliens no longer, but are now children of God. Being children of God is the whole point of the parable of the Prodigal Son. The younger son has been seduced by the pleasures of the world and prefers them to the company of his family. He becomes estranged from his father (God) and discovers that the goods of the world will not sustain him. So he begins his long journey home. But before he can even make his apology, his father rushes out to embrace him and welcomes him home. This is the key to the whole story. God always has room for us in his house. The reunion of the family is more important than the transgressions that separated them in the first place. The older son fails to recognize this and seems unwilling to forgive. These lessons are meant for us. Do we forgive those who have transgressed against us (as we say every time we recite the Lord s prayer)? Do we realize that love is the Spirit of God that unites us? If the boy had not realized his mistake and begun the journey back, he never would have experienced the love and forgiveness of his father. If pride or foolishness kept him away he would have remained estranged from his family forever. Lent is our journey back to God through our decision to bring reconciliation and forgiveness to our relationships. There is no other way. Last weekend Chip Wirth gave a great presentation on the new McKenna Technical Institute in Haiti and all the wonderful things that are happening at the Orphanage. If you have not yet had the chance to participate in this, our Lenten Mission Appeal, envelopes are available at the rectory and checks can be made out to St. Robert Bellarmine on behalf of the mission. Thank you for your generosity and support of the children. The RCIA Elect will celebrate the Second Scrutiny at the Saturday 5 p.m. mass this weekend, a short ritual asking God s blessings as they continue the period of purification and enlightenment in preparation for receiving the Easter sacraments. They will celebrate the Third, and last, Scrutiny next Sunday at the 10 a.m. mass. The Multi-Parish Lenten Mission will be held at St. Bart s this week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 p.m. Each evening is a self-contained session so if it is not possible to come all three nights, come when you can. All are welcome. Please see page five for more details. Our Parish Lenten Reconciliation Service will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 19th at 7 p.m. We will honor St. Joseph at the morning mass and ask for his intercession as we seek to grow closer to Jesus this Lent. There will not be a St. Joseph Table or Feast this year. Since Easter falls so early, there was no way to comfortably fit it in with all the other parish activities. We do plan to bring back these celebrations next year. Sister Ann Schaffer is retiring from the St. Mary of Providence Soup Kitchen. Sr. Ann has been a wonderful force for good and a face of Jesus to the hungry in our community for many years. The Soup Kitchen will continue its ministry, but we will deeply miss her presence. God s bless you, Sister! Her letter can be found on page eight. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
4 Page 4 March 10, 2013 LENTEN SCHEDULE OBSERVING GOOD FRIDAY VS. SPRING TRAINING/EXHIBITION GAME: SO, WHY CAN'T YOU GO TO THE BASEBALL GAME ON FRIDAY? Reconciliations Saturday 4:00-4:45 p.m. March 16 and 23 Parish Reconciliation Service Tuesday, March 19 at 7p.m. Stations of the Cross Fridays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. March 15 and 22 March 29 at 3 p.m. (Good Friday) Living Stations led by the Teen Group Parish Mission Monday-Wednesday March p.m. Mission (St. Bartholomew) This year, several major league baseball teams will have spring Training or exhibition games on Good Friday. While everyone else is heading to the stands, eager for hot dogs and home runs, all those Catholics are walking quietly towards churches. Why?? Because at three o'clock on a Friday, on a hillside called Calvary, the Savior of the world took his last breath. All for love of us. "It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle. Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit ; and when he had said this he breathed his last." (Luke 23:44-46) At 3 p.m. on Good Friday, we take the time to reflect on what Christ has done for us, not only by fasting, but also by the various devotions that our churches offer: veneration of the cross, the reading of the Passion and the Stations of the Cross. On Good Friday, we spend our afternoon walking with Christ to Calvary, Novena Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. Holy Week begins on Saturday, March 23 with the 5 p.m. Vigil Mass of Palm (Passion) Sunday Lenten Scripture Study We are having a small group scripture study, reflecting on the Sunday mass readings on Thursday mornings at 9:15 a.m. March 14, 21, and 28. WANT TO FIND THE RIGHT WORDS FOR YOUR LENTEN JOURNEY? Consider joining the SRB Scripture Study. Thursday Mornings 9:15 10:15. Ongoing through March 28 th. We will explore the scriptures for each Sunday.

Officer Parrilli spoke about train safety and what the children should be aware of when using public transportation. Pedestrians should be aware of their surroundings, especially near train tracks. Distractions such as texting, listening...to mp3 players, or talking on cell phones while walking could put pedestrians in harm's way. Whether on foot or driving a vehicle, distractions can be deadly, and trains can t stop quickly because of their size and weight.
