Have you read the Bible lately? I Jonathan Quinn & Elizabeth Dills II Michael Polizzi & Eliana Melecio III John Nixon & Jessie Stachulski Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time The prophet Isaiah tells us that God will provide for all peoples a feast and that he will destroy death forever. He proclaims that the Lord will wipe away the tears from every face. Because of this we are told to rejoice and be glad for God has saved us. St. Paul tells the Philippians that it is essential to rely on God in all circumstances, whether one is living in abundance or in need. He teaches them and us that all things are possible in Christ, when he alone is our source for strength. In Matthew s gospel Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a wedding feast. The king dispatches servants to inform the invited quests that the time is ready for his son s wedding. They refused to come, and even after given a second chance by the king, they beat or kill the messengers. Enraged, the king has them destroyed, and tells his servants that the invited guests were not worthy to come. He tells them to go out and invite to the feast whomever they find. When one of the newly invited guests comes without a wedding garment the king has him thrown out, explaining that many are invited but few are chosen. Isaiah 25:6-10a Philippians 4:12-14, Mathew 22:1-14 Healing Mass Our Annual Healing (Anointing) Mass will be celebrated this Saturday, October 15th at 10 a.m. This special celebration is being prepared by our Ministers of Care who will be our greeters and liturgical ministers as well as hosting hospitality in the hall immediately following the mass. The Girl scouts will be providing get well and greeting cards to those in attendance. In the context of the Eucharistic Liturgy, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick takes place immediately after the homily. In the ancient tradition of the Church, the priest calls down the power of the Holy Spirit and lay hands on the head of each person. Then, using the Oil of the Sick, blessed by Cardinal George, the priest anoints the forehead and the palms of the hands, praying for the grace of the Holy Spirit. This powerful sacrament brings spiritual healing and strength to those who call on the Lord in faith. All who are elderly, infirm, suffering from chronic illness, depression, those who will be going to the hospital or having surgery as well as those in rehabilitation are invited to receive the sacrament. Care givers, family members and friends are welcome to attend. Fr. Neil

3 October 9, 2011 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures continue the theme of God s invitation to participate in his heavenly kingdom. God wants us to share his life and his love. He calls everyone to share in this joy. But because God loves us, he respects our dignity. He has given us free will and allows us to make a choice of whether or not we will accept his invitation. The Prophet Isaiah gives us the vision of the kingdom. On this mountain (heaven) the Lord will provide a banquet of rich food and choice wines. He will destroy the veil that prevents people from seeing the kingdom in front of them. He will dry our tears and destroy death forever. The people that come to the mountain will rejoice because they know that God has saved them. This is a wonderful promise that is available to everyone. And yet, everyone does not accept the invitation. In the gospel Jesus tells us the parable of a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, inviting all his friends. Oddly, they refused to come. Some ignored the invitation, and some even beat and killed the servants who brought them the invitation. Shockingly, the king responded by killing the invited guests, saying that they were not worthy. He then invited anyone he could find, the good and the bad alike. Jesus provides a very stern warning on the consequences of refusing God s invitation. We are the invited guests. Why would we turn down such a wonderful banquet that God promises? Many of us, like those in the parable, ignore the invitation because we are too busy. We don t pay attention to the presence of God in our lives or to the obligations that are part of our responsibility as children of God. We beat and kill his servants when we refuse to act on God s Word in our failure to love our neighbor as ourselves, when we fail to share the gifts and blessings God has given us, when we have a meanness of spirit, when we angrily judge others or their motives, when we refuse to forgive others or deny them the respect and dignity we claim for ourselves. This beating and killing of his servants is to deny God; who in turn, Jesus says, will deny us. The servants go out and bring in anyone they find. One of the guest arrived without a wedding garment. This guest was cast into the outer darkness. Those who show up at the banquet without a proper gift will not be allowed to participate in the feast. God will ask each one of us, Where is your wedding garment? Have we put on Christ and shared the gifts he gave us? Will we celebrate with God in heaven or be cast into the outer darkness? Jesus invites us to hear the words of the prophet Isaiah, raise our eyes to the mountain and join him in his heavenly feast. Respect Life Month is a reminder to seriously reflect on our knowledge of, and attitudes toward, all life issues. Today s gospel reminds us that our own salvation depends upon our respect for the dignity of all people, honoring Christ in them by working for God s kingdom here on earth where all our brothers and sisters have a place at the banquet table. The Cardinal has designated today as Inclusion Sunday, asking us to welcome all those with disabilities and to work for their dignity and full participation in the life of the community. One of the many ways the Church promotes the dignity of the human person is in the sacraments, most obviously in the sacraments of healing (the sacraments on initiation conform us interiorly to the image of God and the sacraments of vocation image the kingdom of God). Our annual Healing Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 16 at 10 a.m. Please see page two for more information. We have a very active parish. Some of the events recently held were Catechetical Sunday with Coffee and Donuts, the school Run-A-Thon, the Parent First Reconciliation Meeting as the children prepare to receive sacraments this year, Graziano Night, the St. Francis Day Pet Blessing, and We Love Our Kids Day. I hope that we will have pictures from some of these events in future bulletins. Upcoming events include the Ritual of Enrollment for families preparing for First Reconciliation next Sunday, with Coffee and Donuts sponsored by the Sports Board, the Confirmation Parent Meeting on Monday October 17 and the New Parishioner Dinner on Tuesday October 18. Our first Harvest Gala is this Saturday. This is our major parish social event of the year, celebrating the life and spirit of St. Robert s. This year we will honor the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur for their eighty years of devotion and service to our parish and school. But critical to the life of our parish is the financial resources necessary to keep the parish running. The Harvest Gala is the only fundraiser for our entire parish community. Even if you are unable to attend, I ask all of you to please purchase raffle tickets or make direct cash donations in support of our parish. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

4 Page Four Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 9, 2011 Give it To Me Straight: The Liturgy of the Eucharist In a previous article, we described some of the most significant characteristics of the English translation of the 3rd edition of the Roman Missal: more allusions to scripture; a more elevated, formal language; closer adherence to the sentence structure, syntax, and cadence of the Latin; and a broader vocabulary. Without a doubt, these characteristics will be most evident in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. And with your spirit a change in the new Roman Missal The preface dialogue begins with the liturgical exchange we ve already noted: The Lord be with you / And with your spirit. Then, after we have been invited to give thanks to the Lord, our God, the people will respond, It is right and just. This is a more concise translation of the Latin, and it creates an almost seamless transition into the rest of the Eucharistic Prayer, most of which follow with words such as It is truly right and just, our duty and salvation (Eucharistic Prayer II) There are two noticeable changes in the words of consecration in the new Roman Missal. Introducing the words of Christ, said over the wine, the priest will say, when supper was ended, he took the chalice Choosing the word chalice instead of cup emphasizes that this vessel is no ordinary cup. Indeed, it highlights the sacrificial character of this vessel which holds the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, shed for us out of love. The difference between for all and for many The next difference is in the words of Christ at the consecration of the wine as the priest says, Take this all of you and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. The change of for all to for many maintains the words of Christ as recorded in the Gospels of Matthew (26:28) and Mark (14:24), thus making the Scriptural allusion more obvious. At the same time, it does not change our Catholic understanding that Christ is the Savior of the whole world and that his sacrifice was made for all people (see John 6:51 and Catechism ). This will be important as we catechize on the 3rd edition of the Missal. The Mystery of Faith in the new Roman Missal One significant change in the new Roman Missal is that the familiar acclamation Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again will no longer be used as an acclamation to the Mystery of Faith. The reason for this is that the three options given for the acclamation are all addressed to the Lord (e.g., We proclaim your Death, O Lord ). They all note our relationship to Christ s Paschal Mystery ( When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord ). The acclamation Christ has died does not follow this form; thus it was not included in the options. Likewise, instead of directing us to give the acclamation ( Let us proclaim ), the priest will simply announce, The Mystery of Faith, acknowledging the reality that our acclamation is something that wells up, unsolicited. Notice, too, the similarity with two other equally profound pronouncements in the Liturgy: The Word/Gospel of the Lord, and The Body/Blood of Christ. What does enter under my roof mean in the new Roman Missal? The last noticeable change in the Liturgy of the Eucharist will be the invitation and response to Holy Communion. The priest will say, Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. There are two key allusions to scripture here: John the Baptist identifying Jesus as the Lamb (John 1:29) and the angel s declaration in Revelation (19:9) regarding those called to the wedding feast of the Lamb. Our response, Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed, echoes the words of the Centurion, who asked Jesus to heal his servant (Luke 7:6-7, Matthew 8:5-13). As we are presented with the very Body and Blood of Christ, we are called to the same, deep level of faith as the Centurion. In the next article we will explore the texts of the Concluding Rite in the new Roman Missal in particular, the dismissal, to which Pope Benedict himself added his personal touch. 6 Page Six Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 9, 2011 Your help is needed to write the St. Robert Bellarmine Parish Mission Statement What makes our St. Robert Bellarmine Parish Community unique? What values do you see here, how can we grow? These questions are at the heart of how any parish understands its mission and plans its future. A Parish Mission Statement expresses the purpose of a parish. It helps the parish identify itself as a community of faith and gives direction for the future efforts of the parish. The Parish Mission Statement is to be inspirational, motivational and give overall direction for parish life activities. It explains the reasons why a parish exists with words that are straightforward and meaningful to the people of the community. It is meant to be understood and used by the parish as it sets its goals and strives to be faithful to the mission entrusted by Christ: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the Good News to all of creation". (Mark 16:15) Encouraging the development of a Parish Mission Statement and periodically reviewing and revising it is a function of a Parish Pastoral Council. But all parishioners participate in the mission of the Church and the whole parish is involved in the development of the Mission Statement. There will be a number of ways that parishioners will be invited to participate in the development of our St. Robert Bellarmine Mission Statement. This weekend and next, all parishioners are invited to fill out a feedback form. All parish organizations and Commissions will also be asked to fill out these forms at one of their meetings in October or November. Parish Pastoral Council members will be available to come to those meetings to talk about the process and facilitate discussion. During Advent some preliminary responses and statements will be posted in the bulletin for additional feedback. Then the Parish Pastoral Council will finalize the Parish Mission Statement on their retreat day in January. When the Parish Mission Statement is finished, all parishioners and parish organizations will be asked to reflect on how their work at St. Robert Bellarmine is shaped by and challenged by this Mission Statement. The Parish Pastoral Council with the help of the Commissions will continue the Pastoral Council with the help of the Commissions will continue the pastoral planning process by assessing the parish's strengths and needs and by setting broad goals and priorities which are rooted in the Mission Statement. Please take a moment this week to fill out one of the Parish Mission Statement Feedback forms. They can be found in your pews at church, or you can use the one below and return it to the rectory. Thank you for your help! We Would Like Your Input St. Robert Bellarmine is a unique and caring community and the Parish Pastoral Council would like to envision our future through a parish mission statement. As we begin the process of writing one, we would appreciate your input. Please take a moment to answer the questions below. Thank you. What makes our St. Robert Bellarmine Parish community unique? What values do you see evident in our St. Robert Bellarmine Parish community? In what ways would you like to see our St. Robert Bellarmine community continuing to grow?

7 October 9, 2011 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Seven What does it mean? Teaching Mass How many times do you find yourself walking through the parts of the Mass, yet not really remembering what they mean? There are lots of words we repeat every week and gestures that are supposed to mean something to us, but for many people we learned all that a long time ago. This is your chance to brush up on what it means to make it meaningful again. Fr. Neil will guide us through a Eucharistic Liturgy, stopping throughout to explain things and to answer questions. In the Church, October 20th at 7 p.m. Volunteers will read stories to kids in the cry room! St. Robert Bellarmine Adult Education Conversations on Faith are part of the Adult Education at St. Robert Bellarmine. We believe that we are always learning what it means to be an adult in the church. No matter how grown up we are, we can still Grow in our Faith. Offenses against human beings whether from abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, the death penalty, or in scientific experimentation are discussed and prayed for with the intensity called for by their seriousness. Just last month, the American people paused to remember those who died because of a callous and horrific disregard for human life: the attacks on our nation on September 11, What I found most touching about the 9/11 coverage is the stories of the impact that every person who died had on their family, friends, co-workers and community. The loss of each person reverberated far beyond their own lives to others. In remembering the attacks on our nation, Pope Benedict XVI noted that, Every human life is precious in God s sight and no effort should be spared in the attempt to promote throughout the world a genuine respect for the inalienable rights and dignity of individuals and peoples everywhere. One of the ways in which we show our genuine respect for the dignity of all people is by welcoming those with different abilities into our midst when we gather in our parishes for worship. Participation in Inclusion Awareness Sunday, sponsored by the Pathways Awareness Foundation, helps parish communities to learn about the different ways in which our facilities and our programs can be more mindful of those among us with physical or developments disabilities so that they can fully participate in parish life. However, to have a real and lasting impact, we must extend our efforts beyond Respect Life Month. I would ask each of you to consider taking one action every week throughout the year to welcome and include parishioners of all abilities into our parish family. Each one of us can participate in this effort; together we can open our communities so that everyone feels welcome to participate in worship, ministries and fellowship every day of the year. You and those you love are in my prayers every day; please keep me and the needs of the Archdiocese of Chicago in yours. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago
