Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Arlene Placek, Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the first reading from the Book of Exodus, the Israelites, led by Joshua, are engaged in a defensive war against Amelek. Moses climbs to the top of the hill with the staff of God in his hand and holds up his arms in supplication to the Lord. As he grows tired, the tide of battle goes against them. Aaron and Hur sit him down on a rock and support his hands. With this, Joshua was able to win the battle. St. Paul exhorts Timothy to remain faithful to what he has learned and believed. All Scripture is inspired by God, so therefore, he may be properly equipped for every good work. St. Paul charges him to preach the Word at all times. In the gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the widow and the unjust judge. She persists in asking the judge for the justice which he has denied her. The judge concludes that, because she keeps bothering him, he will give her a just judgment. Jesus asks, rhetorically, will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones? Exodus 17: Timothy 3:14 4:2 Luke 18:1-8 World Mission Sunday Today is World Mission Sunday, a time to honor all those who dedicate their lives in service of the gospel, carrying the message of Christ s love to all the world. We are called to this Eucharistic celebration, along with Catholics in every parish, to recommit ourselves to the call we heard at Baptism, to share our faith, to be missionaries. Let us pray at this Mass for all who long to hear the hope-filled, life-giving message of Jesus love and salvation. Let us offer generous financial help to the Society of the Propagation of the Faith in support of the service of priests, religious, and lay catechists in more than 1,150 local churches (dioceses) throughout Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands and remote regions of Latin America. (Missions in the United States are supported through the Catholic Extension Society.) Today there are countless people who are waiting for the proclamation of the gospel, those who are thirsting for hope and love. May the celebration of World Mission Sunday encourage everyone to take renewed awareness of the urgent need to proclaim the gospel.. (Pope Benedict XVI) The Pope reminds us that we all participate in the Church s mission to bring the light of salvation to all people. He asks that each of us make a credible sign of communion among the Churches by our financial support. Finally, the Pope expresses his gratitude for all our support and prayers.

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures remind us of the necessity to pray always. Far from being a pious sentiment, this is a very practical way to improve the quality of our lives. Many of our troubles would be avoided if we cultivate a good prayer life. Prayer, properly understood, puts us into an ongoing relationship with God that transforms our lives. As our friendship with, and awareness of God deepens, the way we view the world changes. We develop a deeper sense of gratitude and appreciation for the graces and blessings in our lives. This, in turn, makes us less anxious about our lives. We no longer feel a need to control people and situations around us. We no longer use or take advantage of others to get our (perceived) needs met. As we seek God s will for us we become more calm in the face of life s trials and develop an inner joy that even calamity cannot destroy. Origen, one of the greatest spiritual writers in our tradition, suggests that one way to view the Old Testament is to see beneath the surface history and to view God s activity as an allegory for the action of the Holy Spirit. In the reading from Exodus, Moses holds up his hands to the Lord, seeking his help in the battle against Amelek. When his hands are high the tide of battle goes in his favor. When his hands droop, Amelek gets the better of the fight. When Moses grows tired, his friends hold his hands up and the tide of war shifts back in favor of the Israelites. Symbolically, when we turn to God, we are aware of his presence and his grace. When we grow tired and do not seek the Lord, he seems far from us. But when we turn to friends for guidance and support, we again experience the presence and grace of God in our lives. In the gospel Jesus tells us of the need to pray always and gives us the parable of the widow and the unjust judge. Because she persistently seeks justice, the judge finally gives in. Jesus says that if even an unjust man will act righteously in the face of persistence, will not God secure the rights of those who cry out to him day and night? He says that justice will be done for them. Because of this truth, St. Paul exhorts Timothy to persistently preach the word of God, regardless of circumstances, so that all may know the grace and mercy of God. Our Asian Community here at SRB will host an Autumn Night dance and fundraiser (for the Simbang Gabi celebration in Advent) this Saturday, October 22. This is a wonderful group of people who are deeply faithful and also enjoy a good time. Filipino food is incredibly delicious. Please see page seven for details. All are welcome. The Archdiocese will celebrate the Christi Fidelis (Christian Faithful) Awards next Sunday at Holy Name Cathedral. These awards are given out annually to someone who has made significant contributions to the life of the parish. I will have more on this after the event. On the horizon are All Saints Day and All Souls Day. All Saints Day is Tuesday, November 1st. In addition to the 8:30 morning mass, there will be a school mass at 9:45 a.m. and a Parish mass at 7 p.m. All Souls Day, on Wednesday, November 2nd, will be celebrated at the 8:30 a.m. and we will celebrate our annual Mass of Remembrance honoring all our deceased at 7 p.m., followed by a reception in Kernaghan Hall. The Annual Parish Financial Report summary, sacramental statistics and education program enrollment numbers for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016 can be found on pages six through eight of this week s bulletin, along with my commentary on the results. This report has been reviewed and approved by the Finance Committee. Please read it carefully since it does reflect the current state of parish operations. This report will be mailed to all registered parish households and will also be available at the rectory. The world has been experiencing some crazy weather recently. In a special way let us remember the people throughout the Caribbean and our southeast coasts who suffered from the devastation of Hurricane Matthew last week as well as victims of natural disasters everywhere. I am away this weekend giving a silent directed retreat at the Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington for about sixty men who will be taking some quiet time away from family and daily routines to discern the Lord s presence in their lives. Please pray for all these men. I will be back later on this evening. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 The Baby Bottle Project benefits The Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This nonprofit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. If you have not already done so, please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church this weekend, fill it with your spare change, and return it to church or to the rectory by the end of October.

Page 6 October 16, 2016 St. Robert Bellarmine Church October 11, 2016 Dear Parishioners, The past year was financially successful. Not much occurred out of the ordinary. Overall net operating income was just above break-even. On the church side, net operations were in the black by just over $11,000, or a $20,000 improvement from last year. Thanks to your generosity, Sunday contributions increased by $30,000, all other collections were up $7,000 and fundraising income was up $18,000, thanks to a very successful Gala returning to the level of two years ago. Unfortunately, along with the rest of the Archdiocese, we lost nearly $23,000 on our endowment investments, a $34,000 swing from the prior year. Overall total church revenues increased $25,000 from last year. Operating expenses were flat compared to last year, as increases in payroll costs were offset by reductions in utility, liturgy and miscellaneous expenses. On the school side, the net operating loss of $12,000 or $18,000 worse than last year, as revenue gains (+$106,000) were offset by higher personnel costs (+$118,000) and maintenance expenses (+$12,000). Net enrollment stayed the same at a healthy 339 students. We were also able to purchase laptop computers for all our teachers with our share of the funds collected from last year s Annual Catholic Appeal. We have one of the largest schools in our deanery, and, I believe, the only school not to receive any grant or subsidy from the Archdiocese. Our test scores are among the highest in the Archdiocese and the quality of our faculty is outstanding. One very bright spot was the increase in enrollment in our Religious Education Program, up 37 students to a total of 136. Our new Religious Education Director, Mary Ellen Casselman, has made great strides in improving communications with our families, streamlining the office and reducing expenses (included in the church figures) while enhancing enrollment and the quality of our program. On the capital side, we received nearly $50,000 in donations from generous parishioners that allowed us to replace the lighting panel in the church ($27,000), complete the space analysis of our parish campus ($9,700), install new flood control drainage in the parking lots ($8,400) and fix the outside drainage for the school basement ($5,800). Going forward, we don t expect much change in the church operations, although the past s year s losses on our endowment have flattened due to the improvements in the market. The school enrollment has increased to 373 students as we end the first quarter of the new year. While the 2017 revised budget has not yet been completed, we hope that the school will be back in the black, before any extraordinary capital/maintenance items. The financial results for the year ended June 30, 2016 are shown on the following pages. If you have any questions, please call me, our Business Manager Kathy Goetz or any member of the Finance Committee. Thank you for your continued generosity and support. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 9 ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Statement on the Naming of Archbishop Blase J. Cupich to the College of Cardinals October 9, 2016 His Holiness, Pope Francis, announced today at the Vatican that Archbishop Blase J. Cupich is a cardinal-designate and will be among the 17 new cardinals to be created at the consistory November 19, 2016, at the Basilica of St. Peter in Vatican City. Archbishop Cupich was appointed to head the Chicago archdiocese, the nation s third largest, by Pope Francis on September 20, The news this morning that Pope Francis has named me to the College of Cardinals is both humbling and encouraging, said Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago. I offer my best wishes to the other Cardinals-elect, especially Kevin Farrell and Joseph Tobin, and I look forward to joining with them and the other cardinals as we work together with the Holy Father for the good of the Church." When Pope Francis appointed me Archbishop of Chicago more than two years ago, the people of the archdiocese welcomed me as a friend and brother and I committed wholeheartedly to serve them, said Archbishop Cupich. The role of Cardinal brings new responsibilities, but with your prayers and help, we will continue the task we have begun of renewing the Church in the archdiocese and preparing it to thrive in the decades ahead.
