Because two of the men who received the spirit had been outside the camp, the people thought they had no right to prophesy in God s name. Moses replies that he wished that the Lord would send his spirit on them all. In the second reading St. James harshly condemns the wealthy who have grown rich at the expense of others. He also condemns those who live for earthly pleasures instead of focusing on justice. Jesus is even harsher in the gospel. He condemns those who sin, or lead others to sin, to eternal damnation. But those who follow him and take care of the needy will not lose their eternal reward. Numbers 11:25-29 James 5:1-6 Mark 9: THE EUCHARIST IN OUR LIVES A REFLECTION IN HONOR OF THE YEAR OF SUNDAY MASS To have the Church be what you want it to be would require the continuous miraculous meddling of God in human affairs, whereas it is our dignity that we are allowed more or less to get on with those graces that come through faith and the sacraments which work through our human nature. God has chosen to operate in this manner. We can t understand this but we can t reject it without rejecting life. The main reason we can t reject it without rejecting life is, again and always, the Eucharist. What distinguishes the Catholic Church utterly, finally and infinitely from any other church is that Christ left it as the repository of his Body and Blood, the Sacrament of Sacraments pulsing, dynamic, eternal source of the power that creates and rules the universe to nourish and connect us until the end of time Without the Body and Blood of Christ ground of all truth, justice, beauty, intelligence, knowledge, order, mystery we wither and die. Without his ongoing, creative, ever-alive and eternal love for us and ours for him there is no order, no hope, no peace, no light, no life or possibility of life, no reason to go on. Flannery O Connor in a letter to a non-believing friend, December 9, 1958 (Flannery O Connor was an American writer whose Catholic faith permeated both her non-fiction and fictional works.)

3 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures give us a very vivid picture of the dire consequences of sin. Jesus uses very graphic and terrifying imagery of the fate of sinners. The gospel is a reminder of how much the Lord hates sin because it destroys our relationship to God and to one another. Jesus provides us with hope for salvation and shows us how to attain it. On the one hand, we should have confidence in God s love for us. At the same time, we should also be aware that our own lack of love can separate us from God forever. In the first reading we hear of two men who, having received the spirit of the Lord, are prophesying in his name. Because they were not in the camp when Moses called down the power of God, the people assumed that they were false prophets. Moses responds that he wishes that everyone had received the power of God. This ties into the first half of the gospel story. The disciples complain that someone who did not follow them was casting out demons in Jesus name. Jesus responds that whoever performs a mighty deed in Jesus name cannot speak ill of him. Jesus goes further, telling them that if anyone gives them a cup of water in his name will not lose his reward. In the second reading, St. James harshly condemns the rich for their selfishness, telling them to wail over their impending miseries. The imagery he uses is very graphic. He tells them that they have fattened their hearts against the day of slaughter and that corrosion will devour your flesh like a fire. God will condemn those who withhold justice and mercy from the poor. Jesus likewise uses graphic imagery in the second half of the gospel. Anyone who causes the little ones to sin would be better off with a great millstone put around his neck and thrown into the sea.. Death by drowning is not very pleasant. But it gets worse. If your hand, your foot or your eye causes you to sin, cut it off. Jesus says it is better to enter into life crippled than to be whole and cast into the fires of hell. Jesus refers to the place of damnation as Gehenna, which was literally a burning garbage dump outside of Jerusalem. And just so we get the point, Jesus describes Gehenna as the place where the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched. Jesus is pretty clear about the consequences of sin; and makes sure that we do not misunderstand nor take it lightly. This quotation is a direct reference to the final prophecy of Isaiah; a stern warning about judging others as unworthy of belonging to the family of God. This echoes Moses wish from the first reading that all receive God s spirit, as well as Jesus rebuke to the disciples against excluding those who perform good deeds in his name. He tells them that whoever is not against us is for us. Further, their good works are a sign of the presence of the spirit of God. St. James makes the same point. Those who give mercy and justice to the poor and the weak will store up for themselves treasures in heaven. Jesus always gives us a choice. Today he points out that the way to enter the kingdom of heaven is to include everyone at the table and show the love of God to others by good works, mighty deeds of God, especially to the poor, the oppressed, and the outcast. The Christian life is about a journey of conversion. We are called to put on the mind of Christ, to live as he did, and to grow in love and compassion for others. Today we will honor our student athletes with a special Sports Blessing at the 10 a.m. mass. I would like to thank and recognize all our coaches and volunteers who work so hard to ensure the success of our school sports program. Today is also the celebration of the 125th Anniversary of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. Fr. Scott is celebrating a special mass this morning at Mercy Home. I am grateful to Fr. Scott for his devoted service and support of our parish for the past sixteen years and wish him, and the Mercy Home family, God s continued blessings. Mercy Home truly is a labor of love, with so many dedicating themselves to be the hands, face and voice of Christ to the children in need. This Thursday, October 4, we will celebrate We Love Our Kids Day with a special mass at 9:15 a.m. followed by a program in the school for the families. Everyone is welcome to attend the mass. Later that day there will be a special Pet Blessing at 3:30 p.m. in the back parking lot in honor of St. Francis. All pets are welcome. The Harvest Gala will be held on Saturday, October 13, beginning with the 5 p.m. mass. Bishop Manz will be our principal celebrant and homilist as we honor Fr. 5 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 The Harvest Gala 2012 will be honoring Father Scott Donahue. The committee requested Fr. Scott Donahue to write a few articles. The following is the first of two articles. Fr. Scott Donahue May 12, 1982 \ was blessed to be born to a wonderful family and raised in Mt. Prospect, where I attended public grade school and St. Viator High School. I have two older sisters and a younger brother all are married and I have five nieces and a nephew who I simply adore. My father died suddenly when I was in the seventh grade and to my mother s credit, she raised the four of us with the help of her mother, my grandmother. My mother is truly a hero; a woman with great courage and deep faith. After graduating from high school, I attended to Loyola University Chicago for five years. I lived in a fraternity house and had a wonderful college experience, majoring in political science and accounting. In college, my direction was toward entering law school and becoming a public servant using my law degree. God had other plans as did I and I chose to enter the main seminary in Mundelein in I enjoyed the theological studies, the superb faculty, and the fraternity of my fellow seminarians. I left after two years in the major seminary, asking for some practical experience, and by God s grace and good fortune, I spent a year in a small parish in Columbia, SC. I then returned to the seminary, was ordained in 1982 and was assigned to be a priest at St. Barnabas Parish on the south side of Chicago. As I reflect back on the past 30 years of priestly ministry, I have been extraordinarily blessed with all my assignments. After serving as a parish priest for 3 years at St. Barnabas, I was invited by Cardinal Bernardin to serve as Director of Seminarians, working at the Pastoral Center, the major seminary, while always wanting to live in a parish. I love parish ministry. On completion of my term, I was invited by my predecessor Fr. Close to be Associate President of Mercy Home for Boys & Girls. For 16 years, I ve had the pleasure of working with wonderful co-workers, board members and generous benefactors in this lifesaving mission of helping the neglected and abused children entrusted to our care. As President of Mercy Home, I have the great fortune of seeing God s mercy in action each and every day of my life. Sixteen years ago, again through God s grace and good fortune, I became a resident priest here at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish. I simply love having the opportunity to exercise priestly ministry in this community of faith. As I mentioned, it s terribly important for me to be rooted in a parish experience. I have had the great privilege here to baptize your children, anoint the sick of our community, to marry souls that God has brought together, to celebrate the funerals of your loved ones, and to be involved in the lives of the children in our wonderful school. Most importantly, I ve had the privilege of celebrating the Eucharist nearly every day and certainly every weekend with people who come from different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds but who share a common desire to draw closer to Christ though the mission of the Catholic Church at the parish of St. Robert Bellarmine. Let me say this once again; I simply love being a resident priest at St. Robert Bellarmine and I am blessed to be part of a community of faith with you. More to come next week
