It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775 TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME In the first reading the prophet Elijah is staying at the home of a widow in Zarephath in Sidon. The widow s only son falls ill and dies. Elijah invokes the Lord to restore the breath of life to the child. God answers Elijah by returning the breath of life to the boy. Elijah returns him alive to his mother. In the reading from the Letter to the Galatians, St. Paul reminds them that his preaching is not of human origin, but the revelation of Jesus Christ. He recounts his conversion story and his acceptance by the apostles in Jerusalem as credentials for the truth of his message. In Luke s gospel, Jesus has journeyed to the village of Nain, a few miles from Nazareth. As he entered the town he encounters a funeral procession of a young man and his grieving mother, a widow who has lost her only son. He tells her not to weep. He commands the young man to arise. The young man immediately gets up. Jesus hands the man to his mother. The entire town glorifies God, declaring that a great prophet has arisen and that God has visited his people. COLLECTION FOR THE RETIRED PRIESTS OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Our retired priests have touched the lives of many Catholics in Chicagoland. They were there in critical times of sickness, family difficulties and death. They were there in the joyous times of Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation and Matrimony and anniversaries. There are 207 retired archdiocesan priests, more than a quarter of the total of all priests serving in the archdiocese. Collectively our retirees represent over 11,000 years of service to our people. Normal retirement age is 70 for Chicago priests. Unless there are major health issues, most continue to help out where they can. 50 retired priests live in rectories and assist the parish on a regular basis. 120 retired priests continue to celebrate Sunday Mass, marriages, baptisms and funerals, and visit hospitals regularly. Without their dedication many parishes would not be able to offer the full range of Masses and sacraments that are currently available. This collection is solely for the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. We receive no funds from the Religious Retirement collection taken up in December for the religious order nuns, brothers and priests. 30 priests are currently receiving nursing home assistance or full-time aides in their home or rectory. We will spend over $1.7 million above and beyond Medicare this year alone to provide this care. The priests pension fund was also hit very hard by the economic downturn. Millions of dollars will be needed in the coming years to ensure adequate funding. The Archdiocese is committed to caring for our retired priests, but we need your assistance. Please help. 3 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures of the restoring to life on the sons of the widow of Zarephath and the widow of Nain are evidence of the presence of God, active in the midst of our daily lives, a God who cares deeply about his people. For Christians, these miracles point to the deeper promise of the resurrection. Immediately preceding today s reading, Elijah has come across a poor widow who is about to use the last of her flour and oil to fix a meal as she and her son prepare to die from the drought. Elijah promises her that the jar of flour and the jug of oil will not go empty until after the drought is over. As a result of this miracle, she believes that Elijah is a prophet of the God of Israel and she invites him to stay in her house. In today s reading her son falls ill and dies. The widow reproaches Elijah, asking him if it is because of her guilt that the boy has died. (Zarephath is a town in Sidon, modern day Lebanon, that was one of the original settlements of the Philistines who were worshippers of the fertility God, Baal.) Though not Jewish, she presumes her guilt has to do with worship of Baal, even though she knows Elijah is a prophet of the God of Israel. Instead of rebuking her, Elijah invokes God to restore the boy to life. God answers Elijah s prayer and the boy is restored to his mother. The widow makes a profession of faith saying, Now I know you are a man of God. She identifies him as one who speaks the Word and Will of God. A similar story occurs in the gospel. A widow of the town of Nain has lost her only son. This is a tragedy in any family, but doubly so in the time of Jesus. A true widow has no outside source of support. With her son s death the woman can only look forward to a life of destitution. Though wrapped in her grief, she is probably aware, like the widow of Zarephath, that she has no future. With merely his word, Jesus restores the young man to life. His words Young man, I tell you, arise! are eerily reminiscent of his words at the tomb of his friend, Lazarus, come out!, calling to mind the story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead, which foreshadows Christ s own death and resurrection. This is the source of our hope, not only for this life, but for the reality of eternal life promised in baptism. The key difference in these two stories is that, while Elijah invokes the Lord who answers his prayer, in the gospel it is Jesus himself who is the Word of God that restores life. While the widow of Zarephath has an individual conversion, it is the entire village that glorifies God, proclaiming that God has visited his people. Throughout the miracle stories in Luke s gospel the people, including the Pharisees, recognize that Jesus is a prophet who not only speaks God s Word, but whose own word is the power of God. The scriptures today not only keep the miracle of Easter alive in our hearts but call us to trust in the Lord s goodness, even, or perhaps especially, in difficult times. The School Graduation last Friday was beautiful. Nineteen of our 8th graders received their diplomas in a joyful celebration with family and friends. Special thanks to Carrie Mijal, Susan Peters, Sister Ann, and Sister Lea for all their efforts on behalf of the class. Thank you and congratulations to all of the families and friends who supported our graduates on this journey and continue to guide them as they go on to high school. Congratulations grads! Have a safe and happy summer. The Parish Inspiration Plan Kick-off was held last weekend. If you were unable to attend but would like more information or to help out, please contact Chrissy Zaker at the rectory. The Kindergarten Graduation, the Pre-school Picnic and the School Honors program were all held this past week as the school year wrapped up on Friday morning. There will be a Student Blessing for all students at the 10 am mass today. Thank you to the School Board for all their efforts this year and for hosting our Coffee and Donuts today. Our second collection toady will be to help the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. Please see page two for details. Next Sunday is Father s Day. Thank you to all of our fathers and grandfathers who have loved, mentored and supported us. There will be a special blessing for fathers at all the masses next weekend. Have a great week. PARISH CALENDAR MEETING The annual Parish Calendar Meeting will be held this Tuesday, June 11 at 7 p.m. in Kernaghan Hall. All parish organizations and ministries are asked to send at least one member to help us coordinate the parish activities for the upcoming year.

6 Page 6 June 9, 2013 Missionary program at St. John Bosco Parish Representatives from St. John Bosco will be visiting the homes in our neighborhood from Monday, June 17 to Friday, June 21. So many times the faithful are told to come to church; now the church is going to you. Please receive these volunteers with warmth and respect. They would like to share a brief message of God's love and a prayer. You may pray with them at the door, or invite them in for a short while. The visit should last no more than 10 minutes. Also this week, there will be extended hours of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at St. John Bosco, 2301 N. McVicker, 8:30AM -6:45 PM and 8 PM-9:30PM. We hope this experience renews our life with Christ and extends the Kingdom of God in our world. If you have any questions, please call St. John Bosco at Jeff Fest Arts & Music Festival is looking for volunteers to help in the Kids Zone interactive play area! The Kids Zone will have games for ages 2-12, a Treasure Hunt, Bounce Houses, live art, and music to delight children and families. Volunteers are needed for Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28. Shift times are 12-2:15 pm, 2-4:15 pm, and 4:15-6:15 pm. Receive free entry to the festival and $10. Minimum age is 18. Younger teens are welcome, however they must be accompanied by an adult. Monco Memorial Day at the Races, celebrating the life of longtime St. Robert Bellarmine parishoner Walt Monco, will take place this year on Sunday, June 23. In tribute to Walt's passion for the ponies, we will gather at beautiful Arlington Park in Arlington Heights to remember him and raise funds for his scholarship supporting St. Robert junior high students. Gates open at 11:15 am with the first race scheduled for 1 pm. A simple lunch buffet will be included as part of the day and will be served 12:30-2:30 pm. Admission is $36 for adults and $26 for children 17 and under. The ticket price includes park admission, a box seat, racing program and lunch. If you are unable to attend, you can still honor Walt s legacy by making a donation to the scholarship fund in his name. For the past three years, close to $5,000 in tuition assistance has been awarded to deserving 8th grade students, ensuring they graduate and move onto the Catholic high school of their choice.
