Congratulations to Ciaran & Lora (Wennerberg) Officer I II Baptism Steven John Kurek, son of Steven & Jessica (Joyce) Kurek Jr. Wedding Banns John Nixon & Jessie Stachulski Justin Loftus & Barbara Przybylowicz Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time The prophet Ezekiel, responding to the people s complaint that the ways of the Lord are not fair, turns the question back to them, asking rather are not their ways unfair. The Lord calls the people to personal responsibility for their actions. When a virtuous person turns away from virtue to commit sin, he will die; but if he turns from wickedness he will surely live. In the Letter to the Philippians St. Paul urges them to be humble for the sake of others, just as Christ humbled himself to accept even death on the Cross. In the gospel Jesus gives us the parable of two sons asked by their father to go to work in their vineyard. The first son says no, but does go and work. The second says yes, but does not go and work. Jesus asks, which one did his father s will? Clearly it is the first son who actually goes to work in the vineyard. Jesus tells the religious leaders that they are like the son who says yes to his father but actually disobeys him. They did not believe nor act on the word of God. Jesus tells them that John the Baptist came in righteousness but they did not believe him; while the tax collectors and prostitutes did. It is the tax collectors and prostitutes who believed, not the chief priests and elders, who will enter the kingdom of God. Ezekiel 18:25-28 Philippians 2:1-11 Matthew 21:28-32 A.I.M. School I have enrolled St. Robert Bellarmine school in a new pilot program sponsored by the Office of Catholic Schools called A.I.M. or Archdiocesan Initiative Model. Participation in this three year program allows us to take advantage of some resources that were previously unavailable to us in marketing and development, as well as provide access to more scholarship funds for struggling families. In conjunction with St. Pascal and Our Lady of Victory we are coordinating professional development, sharing of resources and area-wide programming possibilities (e.g. sharing faculty for programs that no individual parish could afford). We are already doing this to some extent, in that we share a gym teacher with St. Bartholomew. Our goal is to save money in some areas and to provide additional programs without having to bear the full costs ourselves. St. Robert Bellarmine school is our parish school and remains so under this three-year pilot program, even as the Office of Catholic Schools takes over some administrative and financial responsibilities to ensure the success of the program. I will continue to be actively involved in all areas of the school and work closely with Mrs. Mijal and the School Board to provide the best catholic education possible for our children. Fr. Neil

3 September 25, 2011 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures call us to turn back to the covenant, putting God s commandments into action. Jesus calls us to hear the Word of God and to act on that Word that God speaks uniquely to each of us in the particular circumstances of our life. We are reminded that if we want to share in the joys of Christ s kingdom in heaven we must imitate his obedience to the Father. The prophet Ezekiel is commanded by God to call the Israelites to righteous behavior. Each person is responsible to God for one s own actions. God says that if one turns from virtue to commit sin he must die for the iniquity that he has committed. But when the person turns from evil to live a life that is right and just, he will surely live. God does not threaten us, but gives us the information we need to follow his way (the gifts of knowledge and wisdom); and, through his gift of free will, we have the power to make our own choices. Jesus highlights this choice in the gospel with the parable of the two sons who are asked to go to work in their father s vineyard. The first son refuses, but later changes his mind and goes out to the vineyard. The second son says he will go but doesn t. Jesus asks the chief priests and the elders which of the sons did his father s will. They answer correctly that it was the first son, because he actually did what was asked of him. Jesus response to the chief priests and the elders is absolutely shocking. He says that tax collectors and prostitutes (the worst types of sinners in the eyes of the religious leaders) will enter the kingdom of God before them. Why? Because they listened to John the Baptist s call to repentance and believed. Even after seeing this, the chief priests and elders refused to change their minds. What is it that the tax collectors and prostitutes believed? They came to believe that John the Baptist came to them in the way of righteousness. John came to proclaim the coming of the Messiah for the forgiveness of sins for those who will follow his way. The way of the Messiah is given to us in the reading from St. Paul: though he was in the form of God, he did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped. Rather he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave; he humbled himself, becoming obedien to the point of death. God s will is that we spend eternity in heaven; and he gave us Christ who opens and prepares the way for us. Like the two sons in the gospel parable, we have a choice. Most of us that have faith are well intentioned, but frequently the distractions, anxieties and burdens of life clamor so much for our attention that we do not listen for the voice of God. God engineers the circumstances of our lives so that we may be living witnesses to his presence in the world. It is precisely in whatever our circumstances may be that we need to listen for the voice of God; and to act on his Word in those circumstances. The temptations that are unique to each one of us, when yielded to, destroy the life of God within us. I m too busy/tired to listen to my spouse/children, to respond to the cares of a friend, to put myself out for others; I m too hard up just now to give to someone who needs help. What are the temptations in your life today? We are made in God s image and likeness and have received the Spirit of God. We are asked to be loyal to the Son of God in the very things that beset his life in us. As some of you may already know one of our long-time and most beloved faculty members, Bertille Schultz, was killed in a car accident last week. Ms. Schultz was that rare teacher who comes along once in a generation who inspires students because she saw the potential in each child and worked to bring out the best in them. She taught here from 1983, retiring this past June. More than just a teacher, St. Robert s has lost a good friend. Her passing leaves a great void in our hearts. She will be deeply missed. Please keep Ms. Schultz and her family in your prayers. Thank you to our Religious Education program volunteers who hosted the coffee and donuts last weekend. This week we celebrate Seminary Sunday. I am happy to have Michael Grzesik back with us this weekend. Michael is preparing for the priesthood at Mundelein Seminary and was with us last year to tell us about his vocation journey and will update us on his experiences this past year. There will be a second collection today to benefit all our Archdiocesan seminaries. Please keep all our seminarians in your prayers and continue to encourage our young people to consider a vocation to the priesthood and religious life. There will also be a blessing for our school sports teams at the 10 a.m. mass this morning. There will be a meeting this Tuesday evening for the parents of children preparing for the sacrament of First Reconciliation. Today s scriptures call each of us to follow the ways of the Lord. I ask all of us to keep these children and their families in prayer and be living witnesses to the gospel as we help guide them in their journey of faith. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

4 Page Four Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 25, 2011 Give it To Me Straight: The Introductory Rites Having laid the groundwork in previous articles for understanding the new Roman Missal changes, let s take a look at some of the most significant changes in the text, beginning with the Introductory Rites. Roman Missal changes start with the greeting The Mass begins with a greeting that this is no ordinary, Hi! How ya doin? greeting, but is rather a ritual greeting and response The Lord be with you / And with your spirit. This is not so much a way to say hello but more of a way to enter into the liturgical rite by extending a solemn wish to someone undertaking a profound task. In fact, this ritual exchange takes place at several other critical moments in the Mass: as we are about the hear the Gospel proclaimed, as we enter into the Eucharistic Prayer, as we are about to be dismissed. The priest s greeting represents his prayer that the Lord be with us as we are about to undertake these profound tasks. Our response, and with your spirit, is much more than a back at ya. It is our prayer that the Lord be with the priest in his unique role as the ordained celebrant of the liturgy and as the head of the gathered body, i.e., the liturgical assembly. Finally, the words, and with your spirit more closely correspond to the Latin and are more consistent with the response as it appears in other languages. Roman Missal changes to the Penitential Act Next, we move into the Penitential Act. Note that referring to this as an act rather than a rite more strongly conveys the reality that admitting guilt and asking for forgiveness are efficacious actions i.e., the very uttering of these words achieves the desired effect of true contrition. One of the options for the Penitential Act is the prayer we call the Confiteor ( I confess to almighty God ). In the revised translation, we will admit that we have greatly sinned, echoing a scriptural allusion found in the Latin text David s humble admission of his own failings (1 Chronicles 21:8). The translation then includes the phrase, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault, a more direct translation of the words that appear in the Latin. This phrase follows the literary element of repetition found in other parts of the ritual texts e.g., the Holy, Holy, Holy of the Sanctus; the three invocations of Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy. These additions will add to a more humble disposition as we prepare to celebrate the liturgy. Roman Missal changes to the Gloria We next break into the great song of praise, the Gloria. It is the first part of the Gloria that will now sound slightly different: Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace to people of good will. This is almost a direct quote from Luke s Gospel (2:14), a good example of the new translation s emphasis on biblical allusions found in the Latin text. The hymn then follows with words that resemble a litany of praise: We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory As mentioned previously, this is another literary tool of the Latin text which works to build, almost into a crescendo, our praise and thanks to God. In our next article, as we continue to explore the Roman Missal changes, we will reflect on the Liturgy of the Word, specifically focusing on the Gospel dialogue and the Creeds, both the Nicene and Apostles. 6 Page Six Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 25, 2011 September 25, 2011 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This weekend we celebrate Seminary Sunday in the parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago. On this occasion, we honor the ministry of the many priests who serve you so faithfully each day, as well as those who are preparing to serve you with that same charity in the future. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Mundelein Seminary is a place where vocations to the diocesan priesthood are discerned and strengthened. Each year, as I ordain the graduates of Mundelein Seminary to the priesthood of Jesus Christ, I do so with confidence that they have been formed for fidelity and service and are well educated in the Catholic faith. The best example of the work of the seminary is reflected in the quiet and compassionate ministry of your pastors and parish priests as they live out their ordination commitment each day to bring Christ to you as they preach, teach and administer the Sacraments. I thank them for their good example and I thank you for your prayers and financial contributions, which provide our future priests with the education and environment they need to prepare well to serve God s faithful. I ask you to pray for those whom God is now calling to the ordained priesthood from among our families and friends. Talk to young men you know whom you think might be good priests; encourage them to explore the possibility of priesthood. I ask you to especially remember your bishops, your parish priests and our seminarians each day in prayer. You and your intentions are in ours. May God bless you and those you love. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago Next weekend our church will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God s Grace, The Women s Centers have saved over 33,000 babies and their mothers from abortion since opening in Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church next weekend and fill it with your spare change. Please return the Baby Bottle to the rectory or give it to a usher at church on or before October 23, This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women s Centers. Thank you for helping defend life, and remember to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers. Pro-Life Quotes: "Abortion kills twice. It kills the body of the baby and it kills the conscience of the mother. Abortion is profoundly anti-women. Three quarters of its victims are women: Half the babies and all the mothers." ~ Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta
