BAPTISM Mason Alexander Groboski, Child of John & Michelle (Boyance) Groboski Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the first reading God calls Jeremiah to prophecy before the nation of Israel. The Lord tells Jeremiah to be brave in the face of opposition. Even though the leaders of Israel will fight against him, they will not prevail because the Lord himself will tell him what to say and will be his shield in times of trouble. he will face. The second reading is perhaps the best known from all of St. Paul s letters. He tells the Corinthians that Love is patient, love is kind... it bears all things,... hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. St. Paul is secure in the knowledge that God knows and loves him. In Luke s gospel we read the continuation of last week s story of Jesus teaching in the temple. He proclaims that the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled in their hearing, that he is the Messiah. All are amazed. But the people ultimately do not believe him because, after all, isn t he merely the son of Joseph the carpenter? Jesus tells them that a prophet is never believed in his native place. The people are furious with him and cast him out of town. Jeremiah 1:4-5, Corinthians 12:31-13:8 Luke 4:21-30 Feast of St. Blase St. Blase was a fourth century bishop in Armenia, renowned for his personal holiness and dedication to the physical and spiritual health of his people. He was tortured and beheaded for refusing to sacrifice to pagan idols. Legend has it that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone. Because of this miracle of intercession St. Blase became the patron saint for the healing of throats. Through the intercession of St. Blase, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil. His feast day is February 3rd. We will celebrate individual throat blessings on Wednesday during the morning mass. Communal blessing of throats will be celebrated next weekend, February 6-7, at all masses.

3 January 31, 2010 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Today s scriptures call us to truly listen to the Word of God. Since salvation depends on faith in Christ, we must listen to and believe his words. God calls us by name to enter into a covenant relationship of love and fidelity. This covenant relationship is fully realized in The mutual and total self giving love expressed in the inner life of God. God makes it possible for us to enter into that relationship through the salvific death and resurrection of his Son. Through faith we are invited to enter into that covenant relationship. God already knows our innermost being. He invites us to get to know him (listening to his Word) and enter into this covenant relationship (believing his Word and allowing that Word to transform us in to the image of his Son). The call of Jeremiah to prophecy was God s reminder to the Israelites that they had abandoned that Covenant. God promises to give Jeremiah the words to say, the strength to stand up to opposition, and his promise that he will be protected. He keeps his promise. Significantly, the Lord tells Jeremiah that the people will not listen to him. As a result of their hard-heartedness and dependence on their own strength, the nation is overcome, the Temple is destroyed, and the people are exiled to captivity in Babylon. This is a good reminder for us that there are pretty harsh consequences for failure to listen and believe the Word of God. The people of Jesus time in his home town were no different. As we read last week, Jesus is in the synagogue and has proclaimed that the prophecy of Isaiah has been fulfilled in their hearing. This prophecy is nothing less than God s promise to deliver his people and fulfill his covenant. At first the people are amazed. But when they realize that Jesus is declaring himself to be the Messiah, they become incensed. They cannot believe that a mere mortal, especially someone they are familiar with, could be the Chosen One of God. Jesus reminds them of the miracles he has performed as signs of God s power and fidelity. He says that a prophet is never received in his native place. After Jesus compares himself to Elijah and Elisha, the greatest of the prophets, the people were so angry that they tried to drive him out of town and tried to kill him. It seems to be fallen human nature that we don t want to believe anything beyond our own wisdom and preconceived ideas. God calls us to a greater vision, to trust in what we do not understand because God himself has spoken. St. Paul gives us the key to trusting in God s Word. Because he is known and loved by God he turns his whole life over to acting on God s Word. St. Paul knows that he is known by God because of his experience of Christ. We experience Christ first by hearing his Word; and by making them the vision for our life, we are drawn into the personal knowledge that God knows and loves us, too. Today we will hear the Cardinal s homily on the Annual Catholic Appeal at all masses. The Annual Catholic Appeal supports the public ministries of the archdiocese that no individual parish could do alone. The Appeal is the largest source of grants and scholarships for our parish schools as well as for capital grants for disadvantaged parishes. None of the funds collected for the appeal will be used for expenses related to the misconduct scandals. Every parish has a goal of 6% of ordinary income. Last year, because we began our capital campaign, we were given a oneyear exemption from the appeal. Our goal this year is $29,300. Every dollar above that amount is returned to the parish. Subject to the approval of the Finance Committee and the Parish Council, I would like to designate the surplus to a scholarship fund for tuition assistance for our struggling parish families. This is an important initiative for all of us. For the next two weekends we will be conducting a pledge drive during the masses. This is not simply a second collection. We will not have a second collection for the Appeal. It is an annual pledge that may be paid over the next twelve months. Please read the Cardinal s letter, as well as the brochure in today s bulletin, and prayerfully consider a sacrificial commitment. On Wednesday of this week we will celebrate Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament after the morning mass until 5 p.m. The day will conclude with Benediction at 5 p.m. Wednesday is also the Feast of St. Blase. There will be individual blessing of throats at the end of the morning mass (communal throat blessings will take place next weekend at mass). This Saturday we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick after the 8:30 morning mass. This coming weekend the Parents Association will host Casino Nights on Friday and Saturday. This is an important fundraiser for our school as well as a fun time. Please see page four for details. Today wed begin the celebration of Catholic School Week. Everyone is invited to the School Open House immediately following the noon mass until 3 p.m. We are very proud of our school and our children. Stop by for an opportunity to see displays of their work, a tour of the school and to meet the teachers and staff. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

The hymn tune, called O Waly, Waly, is a traditional English or Scottish melody dating from the 17 th century. The melody was brought to North America by early settlers, and has become well known in this country, especially in the Appalachian region. It is commonly associated with the folk song The Water Is Wide, which has been recorded by many famous artists, including Peter, Paul and Mary and Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and Sarah Brightman. This old melody was used by Hal Hopson for his arrangement of The Gift of Love, with words taken from 1 Corinthians 13, today s second reading. Hal Hopson (b. 1933, White Mound, Texas) was educated at Baylor University in Waco, TX and Southern Baptist Seminary, Louisville KY. He served as organist and choir director at several churches in Nashville, and was on the faculty at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ and Scarrett Graduate School in Nashville. Hopson has had over 1200 compositions published, including hymn tunes, keyboard and choral works. He continues to work, providing choirs across the country with accessible, scripture-based music to enrich our worship. He is currently Composer-in-Residence at West Plano Presbyterian Church, Plano, TX, where his wife serves as organist/choir master. 5 January 31, 2010 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Five Message from Cardinal George Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Annual Catholic Appeal 2010 they left everything and followed Him. Luke 5:11 While each day I pray for you and your families, I am glad to be able to speak to you now. Across this year in various ways through the Festival of Faith, the Catholics Come Home initiative, and Catholic Schools Week we have been rediscovering what it means to follow Jesus Christ in the Catholic Church. The Word of God leads us more deeply into this mystery of our calling to follow Jesus in His Church. Saint Luke speaks of the time when Jesus was calling His first followers. It ends with these powerful words: they left everything and followed Him. Jesus called His earliest community of disciples to accompany Him. They had to put aside not only their plans and commitments to others, but also their own discouragement and their fear. They even had to let go of their own sense of unworthiness, as the prophet Isaiah and the apostle Paul did. These earliest disciples heard Jesus invitation to share in His mission: from now on you will be catching men. They heard the call, and they said Yes: they left everything and followed Him. Imagine now the power of Jesus call, the force of His personality and His words. What they had to give up to leave was, perhaps, not much by our standards, but nonetheless it was everything to them. Seeing the little community of disciples who walked with Jesus, who followed Him, we recognize the seed of the Church, the very same Church of which we are a part two thousand years later. The disciples hear the words of Jesus, and so do we. They receive from Jesus the Bread of Life, and so do we. They are sent in mission to be His witnesses, and so are we. Centered on Jesus and bonded by His word, by the sacraments, and by His mission, these earliest disciples and we ourselves make up the Church, the Body of Christ. This year, in the Archdiocese of Chicago, we have had the graced opportunity to rediscover how we belong to the Body of Christ and also to deepen our sense of apostolic mission, of being sent by Christ. We have done so in three different ways: by welcoming, by serving, and by supporting. The events and the energy surrounding the Festival of Faith, Catholics Come Home, Catholic Schools Week, and now the Annual Catholic Appeal have given us a focus for our discipleship. First of all, we welcome. We welcome everyone who hears Jesus call to follow Him and wants do so. We welcome those who seek a conversion of heart and want to live holy lives. We welcome those who have for whatever reason drifted from our family of faith and want to come home. We welcome all who search for God. Secondly, we serve. We serve the deepest needs of men and women and children. We nourish faith through our Catholic schools and programs of religious education. We serve the poor, the unborn, and the vulnerable in our city and suburbs and even beyond. We serve the poorest of the poor in other countries through the Catholic Relief Services. We serve the spiritual needs of people by maintaining the structures and buildings and churches that provide a spiritual home for everyone who hears Christ s call and wishes to come and pray and follow Him. Thirdly, we support. We support our brothers and sisters and our children in the community of Christ s disciples. We support them in practical ways, we support them with our prayers, we support them with the work of our hands, and we support them with our financial offerings. We have known the gifts of God in our life, beginning with God s call and love given generously to each one of us. And God s generosity to us prompts us to support those in need and to support the Church herself, for she connects us to Christ and has been a rich source of blessing for us and so many others. Dear friends, the Annual Catholic Appeal calls you and me to live out our discipleship by making a generous financial gift that will enable the Church to continue to welcome, to serve, and to support all people in the name of Jesus Christ. The words of Saint Luke should echo in our minds and hearts: they left everything and followed Him. This is a disquieting challenge. Everything? What the call means is that finally we prefer nothing to Christ Jesus. Jesus can make this call because He is God and loves us with a love so great that it commands our trust. Everything. We, too, have heard His call and together in His Church we strive to follow Him and to continue His mission in the world. The people of the Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago are a great blessing to me as they make discipleship and mission a reality in our time and in our circumstances. Above all, I am grateful for the action of God s grace in your lives. I am also grateful now for your willingness to be a part of this year s Annual Catholic Appeal. May God bless you and keep you. Thank you. Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

6 Page Six Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, 2010 CATHOLICS COME HOME I Proclaim Your Wondrous Deeds There is a dramatic moment in today s Gospel (Lk 4:21-30). Jesus tried to tell the people of his town the truth about the messiah; that the Old Testament prophesies were fulfilled in him. The listeners did not see the connections between the past and the present moment. On hearing this truth, they were filled with fury and they drove Jesus out of town. In the recent television ads for Catholics Come Home, you may have heard a true statement that made you uncomfortable. One of the statements seems so large and exaggerated and we don t have the historical perspective to understand the underlying truth. Have you heard the ad that says the Catholic Church founded the college system. The contemporary liberal arts course of study is comprised of literature, languages, philosophy, history, mathematics, and science holds the historical truth in that statement. This system was developed in the 5 th Century C.E. and defined the education proper to a free man (Latin: liber, free ), unlike the education proper to a slave. The formula remained unchanged throughout the Christianized Roman Empire of the 5th century until Arabic texts and the works of Aristotle became available in Western Europe in the 12th century. Another line in that same TV ad states that the Catholic Church educate(s) more children than any other scholarly or religious institution. Did you know that the largest system of Christian education in the United States is operated by the Roman Catholic Church? In the U.S. alone there are 8,500 schools, enrolling 2.7 million students. Most schools are administered by individual dioceses and parishes that also offer Religious Education to children who attend public schools. Today, as many schools in the Archdiocese prepare for a week that celebrates Catholic Education you may want to share these facts with your family. Be proud of the Catholic Church and all it does to foster the minds and hearts of the next generation. OUR LADY VICTORY TEEN CLUB S ST. VALENTINE S SKI OUTING (SRB TEENS INVITED!)
