Solemnity of Christ the King In the first reading David is anointed the King of Israel. The Lord confers his blessing on King David as shepherd of God s people. David s kingship is a visible reminder of God s covenant with his people. In the second reading St. Paul quotes an early Christological hymn that proclaims Christ as Lord of all things, the visible image of the invisible God, himself through whom all things were created and who holds all things together. Christ has reconciled all things, bringing peace through the blood of his cross. The gospel is from Luke s narrative of the passion, when Jesus is hanging on the cross. The rulers and the soldiers taunt him; saying that if he were truly the King of the Jews, he could save himself. One of the criminals crucified along with Jesus declares his own punishment as just, but proclaims that Jesus has done nothing to deserve condemnation. He asks Jesus to remember him when he comes into his kingdom. Jesus promises that this day he will be with him in Paradise. 2 Samuel 5:1-3 Colossians 1:12-20 Luke 23:35-43 Thanksgiving Day On Thursday our nation celebrates Thanksgiving Day in gratitude for the abundant gifts with which our nation has been blessed. As our first countrymen and women thanked God and invited guests to celebrate and give thanks with them, so we do today. All are asked to bring non-perishable food items that will be presented with the gifts during the Thanksgiving Day mass. These items will be donated to a local food pantry. At the request of Cardinal George, our collection on Thanksgiving Day will aid the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Our mass will be at 9 a.m. In the first reading King Solomon blesses all the people in a great assembly as they give thanks to God for bringing them peace. He enjoins the people to obey all the Lord s commandments so that the nation may continue to prosper. In the second reading St. Paul gives thanks to God for the grace of Christ that the people have received and for the faith that promises salvation. In the gospel Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth and proclaims her Magnificat, a prayer of blessing and thanksgiving to God for his goodness and his blessings. 1 Kings 8: Corinthians 1:3-9 Luke 1:39-55

November 24, 2013 Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the feast of Christ the King, the end of the Church s liturgical year. It is a time when we look forward with hope to Christ s return in glory to bring about the fullness of the heavenly kingdom. This is not a contradiction to our desire to live full lives, to enjoy our families and friends and to have plans for the future. These are all good and noble desires based upon the appreciation of the gift of life that God has given us. But what this celebration does for us is to anchor our lives in the hope of the resurrection. Our desire for the good things of heaven is the vision that shapes our hopes and dreams for our lives on earth. The Church, the living Body of Christ, is the visible sign of God s invisible kingdom. As we seek to reign with Christ in the fullness of his heavenly kingdom, so, as his living body, we seek to manifest that kingdom visibly on earth. In the reading from the Second Book of Samuel, the Israelites seek to make David their king. As God s chosen people, God alone is their true king. In giving an earthly king sovereignty over them, they recognized the king as having sacramental (spiritual) sovereignty, acting on God s behalf to lead and protect them. The Lord blessed this relationship, calling David both the shepherd and commander of Israel. And the people anointed David as King. The anointing is a sacramental sign of consecration. This is a ritual and liturgical act that proclaims God s kingdom as already present on earth. This is the understanding of the Messianic prophecy that the Christ will come from the House of David. "Christ" and Messiah are simply terms for the Anointed One, the visible sign of God s Covenant. We receive this visible sign in our own lives at baptism, when we are anointed into Christ s kingship, priesthood and prophetic ministry. We are called to be the presence of God s kingdom here on earth as we hope to share in his kingdom in heaven. But this kingship always comes with a cost. St. Paul tells us that although Christ, the image of the invisible God, has all power, authority and kingship; he set his glory aside to become one of us. And it is through the blood of his cross that Jesus achieves our reconciliation with God. We see this most graphically in the gospel today as Jesus is hanging on the cross. The leaders and soldiers are mocking him, as if it is not enough that he is undergoing a very painful death. Even on the cross, Jesus is a good shepherd to his people. When the criminal crucified next to him acknowledges his own guilt and his belief in Christ, Jesus promises him that he will be with him in Paradise, the first follower to join him in his heavenly kingdom. Just as our hope in the glory to come shapes our vision of life here on earth, we, too, must be willing to share in the cross of Christ. This Feast of Christ the King strengthens our hope that the power of God will enable us to remain faithful to the heavenly vision amidst the trials and tribulations of this life. We humbly pray, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. And we hope to hear the words: This day you will be with me in Paradise. It has been nearly a year (December 8, 2012) that our former Religious Education secretary and long-time parishioner Joyce Schoenecker passed away. Because her children went to school at St. Robert s the family decided to host a basketball tournament to raise money for the school scholarship fund. The first annual event was held last month and raised over $3,200 for needy students. I am very grateful to Joyce s husband, Don and her sons, Jeremy, Jason and Eric for remembering our school in their time of loss. Please keep the Schoenecker family in your prayers. The final results of the Harvest Gala are in. It was our biggest event yet. We netted $33,200, approximately $9,000 more than last year. Of this total $3,500 was raised for the Fund-A-Need for School I-Pads and $1,500 donated to the Teen Group. The remaining $28,200 goes to the parish operating budget. Thank you to Susie Jablonski, Jeff Griggs and all the volunteers for their hard work. The Girl Scout Bake Sale was held last weekend. Thank you to the Girl Scouts and all the volunteers who provided the treats and hosted the event and raised $1, for the STRETCH Fund. Hand-carved olive wood religious art from Bethlehem Gifts will be on sale in the vestibule next weekend. They make beautiful gifts and the proceeds help Christian families in the Holy Land. As we approach Thanksgiving Day, I am reminded how much God has given me in this life, particularly family and friends. True happiness comes from wanting what we have rather than having what we want. Let us remember to be grateful for all our blessings and pray for those who are alone, have suffered tragedy and those who go without. The rectory office will be closed this Wednesday and Thursday for Thanksgiving so that our staff can enjoy the holiday with their families. The office will re-open on Friday morning at 8:30. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Page 4 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe III John Buoniconti and Kelly Grapenthein Baptized in Faith Dillon Michael Rozmus Son of Thaddeus Rozmus and Colleen DeDecker PARISH UPDATE The financial results and summary letter from the fiscal year ended June 30th were included in the bulletin last week. This report, along with an additional letter that was not in the bulletin highlighting the accomplishments of the past year has been mailed to all registered parish households. If you have not yet received it, please call the rectory. I feel that this is important because I believe that all parishioners should be fully informed about our operations yet only about 15% of parishioners pick up the bulletin. The Parish Pastoral Council has completed the current edition of our parish newsletter Beyond the Walls. This should also be arriving in the mail shortly. An update of the Parish Inspiration Plan is also included in today s bulletin (see page seven). We do all this because of my commitment to transparency and communication. Only a fully informed parish can have the confidence and ability to make good decisions and move forward in our mission as people of God. Fr. Neil SPRED THE WORD Come join the St. Robert Bellarmine SPRED group for our annual SPRED Mass at the 5:30 p.m. mass on December 8th VATICAN SURVEY: PASTORAL CHALLENGES TO THE FAMILY IN THE CONTEXT OF EVANGELIZATION Pope Francis has called for an Extraordinary Synod to address the topic, Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization that will take place in Rome in October of The Holy See has asked bishops to share information about the topic as widely as possible and to provide a way for those Catholics who wish to contribute their comments and input to do so. The instructions and the survey can be found on the Chicago Archdiocesan website, All responses received in the Archdiocese of Chicago will be sent to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, DC, who will pass on all collected response from dioceses throughout the country to the Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops in Rome.

November 24, 2013 Page 5 ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO OFFICE OF THE CARDINAL November 11, 2013 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As you all know, the State of Illinois has entered into law the recognition of same-sex unions as marriages. The Church was part of the public debate, as you also know. We tried to explain that this is not primarily a religious issue, since marriage comes to us from nature as the union of a man and a woman, long before Christ walked the earth or the state came into being. Nevertheless, there will be consequences for the Church and society that will become clearer as the law is used to sue for discrimination. The law has made some gays and lesbians happy, and that is not a bad thing in itself. The law, however, is bad law because it will contribute over the long run to the further dissolution of marriage and family life, which are the bedrock of any society. The Church will therefore continue and strengthen her ministry to families. We have lived with bad laws before, and we will do our best to adjust to this one for the sake of social harmony. One of the consequences for our religion is already evident in the misuse of Pope Francis words, spoken last summer, about our attitude toward an individual gay person who has asked God for forgiveness. The Pope was not speaking about approving gay marriage. To use his words against his teaching, as they were used on the floor of the State House of Representatives on November 5, is less than intellectually honest. We are called, by reason of our belief that every person is made in God s image and likeness, to love and respect all of our brothers and sisters, without exception. But we express this respect within the context of our belief in how God has made us and made the world. This belief and this love is the basis of our joy in living the Catholic faith with integrity of mind and heart. I thank you for your life of faith. God bless you and those you love. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

Page 6 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe GIVING TREE NEXT WEEKEND THE ADVENT GIVING TREE WILL BE IN THE VESTIBULE. Every Advent Season this Giving Tree reminds us as we prepare for Christmas to be mindful of those who are poor. Christ's humble birth and his message of hope for the poor are important to reflect upon throughout Advent as we prepare our hearts for Christ's Birth. If you would like to help out families in need during the Advent season there are several ways the Giving Tree could use your help. 1) On the tree you will find ornaments that represent a child from our Sharing Parish - Ascension-St. Susanna in Harvey. Each person who takes one of those ornaments is asked to buy one warm item of clothing and a little toy. One thing to note: this is slightly different from past years. The main person who organizes the Christmas Giving at Ascension-St. Susanna, Donna, is critically ill and in intensive care. We ask that you keep her in your prayers. The pastor at Ascension-St. Susanna let us know that because of her absence, he would not have time to get us all the names of the children in need. So our recommendation is that you purchase gifts for any age child. Perhaps the same ages as your children, or your nieces or nephews or grandchildren. We are hoping to present our sharing parish with a supply of gifts that they can direct to the children. Directions for this can be found on the ornaments. These gifts are to be turned in by December 14 th. 2) You can place items under the tree of warm clothing, warm bedding, and items for babies and young children such as toys or blankets. These items are distributed to members of our own parish as well as to agencies like Marillac House and Catholic Charities who distribute them to the needy of Chicago. 3) Another agency we support is Marillac House. They offer an opportunity for parents in need to select toys for their children. You are welcome to place unwrapped toys under the Giving Tree for Marillac House and we will deliver them on December 9 th. Thank you in Advance for your Generosity. THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE We will be collecting donations of non-perishable food items for a local food pantry through Sunday, December 1st. Please place your donated items in the boxes provided in the vestibules and thank you for sharing with those less fortunate. Holy Name Men s Club and the Parents Association will be selling tickets next weekend after all the masses for the Annual Christmas Party with Roxy! Tuesday, December 10th. 7 November 24, 2013 Page 7 The Parish Inspiration Plan, completed and approved by Bishop Manz in February of 2013, has been making an impact at St. Robert Bellarmine. The roll out for some of the items began in February and continues to be implemented as we move forward.
