2 FROM THE TEE BOX A Few Thoughts from Our Pastor Dear Friends: From the Tee Box! June 20-21, 2015 The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time To all of our Dads out there congratulations and thank you for our faith and example. Please know that you are in my prayers this weekend especially. It will also be my pleasure, as we do each year, to offer a special blessing with you and for you during each of our Masses. Again, thank you! This column will perhaps be a bit longer than usual, given the fact that there have been a few unexpected things occur during these past couple of weeks in our diocese. Two of our brother priests, Father Jack Nutter (pastor of St. Louis King of France Parish here in Baton Rouge) and Father Phil Spano (pastor of Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, also in Baton Rouge) have begun a medical leave of absence. Along with Bishop Muench, our brother priests and deacons, and the people of our diocese, I ask your prayers for the two of them during this time. Most of you are probably already aware of my work with our Pastoral Planning Task Force which is in the process of looking to the future of our diocese, especially as it regards the number of priests available for ministry. Well, this is a very real example of what, unfortunately, can happen at times. In an attempt to offer care and ministry to the people of Father Jack s and Father Phil s parishes, Bishop Muench has asked that I serve as temporary administrator of Saint Louis. My service here at Saint Jude will continue as normal. I want to emphasize the two words temporary, meaning less than a year) and administrator, meaning someone who assists with the general oversight of parish operations, all the while not being the pastor. Fathers Nutter and Spano are still pastor of their respective parishes. Father Mike Collins will assist with this task. What this means is that, beginning July 1, Father Mike and I will be assisting with weekend Masses at Saint Louis King of France. Father Philip Eapen, current the associate pastor (or parochial vicar ) of Our Lady of Mercy will take up residence at Saint Louis effective July 1. He will celebrate daily Masses and be available for funerals and emergencies. The lay Director of Administration for Saint Louis (Gene Sharp) will oversee the day to day operation of the parish. I wanted to include this information here, mainly to make sure that all of you know that I am not moving or being transferred. Father Mike will also be remaining here at Saint Jude in residence, as he is currently doing. Please keep both of us, as well as Father Philip Eapen, in your prayers as we undertake this task. Most important of all, please pray for Father Jack Nutter and Father Phil Spano as they continue their medical leave of absence. Lastly, thank you for your offering during last week s second collection for the Piarist Fathers. You generously gave $18,000 for their ministry to the people of Appalachia. 3 KC JUNE FAMILY OF THE MONTH The Knights of Columbus Council #9692 have named Chris and Allison Davis as the honorees for the June 2015 Family of the Month Award. Parishioners are asked to join Grand Knight Eddie Guidry and Fr. Trey in presenting the award at a coffee and doughnuts reception in the parish hall following the 8:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, June 28th. Chris and Allison joined St. Jude in They began volunteering shortly afterward at the parish fair. Chris officially joined the Fair Core Committee in 2010 and has worked diligently in the planning and execution of the annual fair since then. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Jude Men s Club. He has been the Men s Club president for the last two years and has organized many working days for the parish, including the help for moving out of the old ministry building and the parish storage building. Under Chris s term of presidency, the Men s Club has added several popular social functions, such as offcampus bus trips, skeet shooting matches and an upcoming fishing rodeo, making the Men s Club a more desirable ministry. He is a general helper for the parish and a school volunteer. Allison continues to volunteer at the fair each year. She serves as a Eucharistic minister and has worked the Sunday School program at St. Jude. Allison is a St. Jude School volunteer and has been on the Home and School committee for the last four years. She serves on the School Advisory Board and has been an assistant room mother. She was a St. Jude Girl Scout troop leader for 3 years. Chris and Allison have been blessed with two children, Caroline and Mitchell. Caroline will be in the 7 th grade and Mitchell will be in the third grade at St. Jude when school starts in August. Congratulations to Chris and Allison on being recognized as the recipients of the June Family of the Month Award. We thank you for your dedicated service to our parish community. The Knights of Columbus sponsor the parish Family of the Month Award and aims at naming a family who serves as an inspiration to our parishioners in supporting and strengthening Christ s family. Kits for Kidz School Supplies for the Needy St. Jude is again partnering with the Gardere Initiative to raise funds to buy school supplies for underprivileged kids in our area. Each kit of essential school supplies cost $ The kits include items such as: folders, notebooks, paper, scissors, rulers, pens, Crayons, etc. A second collection will be taken up on June 28th to help purchase kits. 4 Next week our diocese will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering. While many of us are blessed to enjoy a summer of relaxation and vacations, many area children who depend on school lunches, do not have access, or the means, to have a nutritious meal. What a great opportunity to teach our family that there are MANY families in Baton Rouge that do not have the same blessing as we do! A brown bag filled with lunch items, is a simple way to bring hope to these children. Family Life Ministry has committed to assisting the Brown Bag Offering Group in providing 1,000 lunches (200 per day) for five consecutive days in June 22, 23, 24, 25 & 26th. These lunches will be served during various Gardere Initiative activities. We ask that families work together to assemble the lunches, and by pledging the number of lunches you commit to make.
