COMMENTS BY THE GRAND KNIGHT Brother Knights, I was delighted to accept the State Youth Award at the State Convention on behalf of the Council. It was also inspiring to hear our council name and parish announced with the awards of Outstanding Catholic Girl and Family of the Year. See page 4 for pictures from the State Convention. I received information from Deacon Michael that our clothing and toiletries drive for the Good Shepherd Center was a huge success. Finally, I want to thank Brother Alex Vallejos for his donation of the 500 Year Evangelization Cross to our Council, pictured on page 2. Election of officers will be held at our next business meeting. Please attend. In celebration of 500 years since the evangelization began in the new world, each diocese in the United States and Canada received a cross. It took him two years to complete the crosses. He had one cross left over which he donated to our council. 3 pp SPOTLIGHT ON THE GOOD SHEPHERD CENTER. Brother Terry and Deacon Michael pictured above awaiting donations to load into the truck. We managed to completely fill the truck with much appreciated items of clothing and toiletries for the Good Shepard Center serving the homeless in downtown Albuquerque. This is the only Catholic operated shelter in the area. Deacon Michael also received several hundred dollars in cash donations for the shelter If you travel this year keep the unused toiletry items from the motels/hotels where you may be staying. The small size plastic bottles and bars of soap are exactly what the homeless want. OUR FIELD AGENT A Founding Notion: Protecting the Breadwinner s Income While jobs may be safer in 2016, accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file were not work related? The Knights have always sought to protect members families from the loss of a breadwinner. I m sure you know all about Father McGivney s vision for our insurance program. But you may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members who couldn t work because of an illness. After all, the loss of the breadwinner does not have to mean that person s death; it can also mean the loss of the breadwinner s income. Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income family manage on one income stream? What about young families with a working father and a mother who cares for the children? What if his income halted due to an accident or illness? I ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too many aren t sure what this coverage entails, how much income it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts for something, certainly, but it isn t yours ; it s provided by the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be eliminated tomorrow. 3

4 That s where a personally-owned disability income insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or illness. Kulani Gonzales Stocks, our Catholic Girl of the Year nominee, was selected as the Outstanding Catholic Girl of the Year for the State of New Mexico. At the State Convention she received her award plaque plus a scholarship check from the State Council. (Picture on the right) Kulani with her mother Emile Gonzales. Our nominee for Catholic Family of the Year was selected as the Outstanding Catholic Family of the Year for the State of New Mexico. All will recognize the family of Sir Knight Deacon Leonard and Lady Stephanie Martinez. 4

6 KNIGHTS IN ACTION RESERVE NEW MEXICO Pictured above from left to right: Sir Knight Terry Davenport, Fr. Anthony Dike and Grand Knight Joe Kelley Fr. Anthony Dike is the priest assigned by Bishop Wall to serve four mission churches in southwestern New Mexico- Glenwood, Reserve, Aragon and Datil. Fr. Anthony was ordained in his home country of Nigeria seventeen years ago. He serves the four mission churches and their small Catholic congregations by traveling 350 miles each weekend. Terry Davenport is an officer of the Fr. A. M. Mandalari Assembly 682 who presented Fr. Anthony a chalice donated by the late Sir Knight Gerald J. Cremonese, Sr. Joe Kelley, Grand Knight, Council in Santa Fe presented Fr. Anthony a check from the State Council in support of his ministry.
