Jerusalem is besieged by the Babylonians and will soon be destroyed. The people have consistently ignored the warnings of the prophets. Jeremiah now tells them that the Lord will make a new covenant with Israel. The Lord promises to place his law within them and to write it upon their hearts. He will be their God, and they will be his people; God will forgive their evil-doing and remember their sins no more. The reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds the people that, even though Jesus was the Son of God, he was in the flesh and he suffered. It was through his obedience in accepting his cruel fate that he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. In the gospel Jesus tells his listeners that only those who lose their life for the sake of the gospel will preserve it for eternal life. Jesus says that he will be glorified when he is lifted up (hung on the cross); and in so doing he will draw everyone to himself (be the source of salvation). Jeremiah 31:31-34 Hebrews 5:7-9 John 12:20-33 Lenten Reconciliation Service We journey through Lent to meet Jesus at the Font of Baptism at the Mass of the Resurrection (Easter). Through this time of fasting, prayer and penitence, we seek to purify our hearts so that the Holy Spirit may find in us a fitting dwelling place. Just as we often do spring cleaning of our homes, we do regular spring cleaning of our souls. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an important spiritual practice for all Catholics. While we are required to confess all mortal sins to be in a state of grace to receive communion, the Church also recommends regular examination of conscience and confession of venial sins as a way of opening our hearts to our need of God s grace. These spiritual tune-ups help us to see where we are getting off-track in our relationships and behaviors that prevent us from living fully the life of grace. The Parish Lenten Reconciliation Service will be celebrated this Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. with scripture, a time for personal reflection, examination of conscience and individual confession (either face-toface or in the confessional). This will be a grace-filled time for all of us. May all persevere on our Lenten journey and come to the joy of Easter.

3 The Fifth Sunday of Lent Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk The Fifth Sunday of Lent begins what is called the Passiontide or the time of the Lord s Passion, because in today s gospel Jesus tells the apostles that his hour has come. Jesus is already in Jerusalem, getting ready for the Passover. As our Lenten journey nears its end, Jesus reminds us that the goal of the journey is the Cross. It is only by going to, and through, the Cross that forgiveness of sin is possible. The crucifixion is the great event of history, the turning point in the story of humanity, and the focal point of our relationship to God. In one sense, the Gospel is the Passion -- all else is commentary. It is only in the Cross that the gospel has any meaning. In fact, our very lives can only have meaning when seen in light of the Cross. The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. His glory is not the Transfiguration that we heard three weeks ago. His glory is the Cross. Jesus tells us that unless the grain of wheat dies, it remains simply a grain of wheat; but when it dies it produces much fruit. The fruit of Jesus death is the forgiveness of sin, the reconciliation of humanity with God. Salvation has been achieved through Christ s death and resurrection. But we must make this salvation a reality in our own lives. We must all realize that the Cross is the turning point in our lives. Jesus says, whoever loves his life loses it, but whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me. This is not easy, nor was it easy for Jesus. I am troubled now. Yet what should I say, Father, save me from this hour? But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. Being a Christian isn t easy. The way to salvation is through obedience to the will of God. This is the exact opposite of original sin that is glorified in our culture. The Letter to the Hebrews tells a different story. Jesus offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears. He clearly did not want to suffer and die. He learned obedience from what he suffered, and when he was made perfect he became the source of salvation for all who obey him. Jesus offered prayers and supplications in agony. In his agony in the garden Jesus asks God to let the cup pass from him. But Jesus adds, nevertheless, Thy will, not mine be done. To follow Christ is going to be troubling. To follow Christ will cause pain. But we are purified when we are obedient in the midst of hardships. This willingness to trust in God and to follow him is the goal of Lent, of our entire Christian journey. The Prophet Jeremiah tells us that God will make a new Covenant with us by placing his law within us, writing it upon our hearts. The promise is salvation. The Covenant comes in Baptism when we receive the Holy Spirit which is God dwelling within us, writing his law in our hearts. Then God makes another promise. He says, I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sins no more. Sanctification is the process through which we undergo transformation and is the proof of our acceptance of the Cross. The good news is that the Cross is not the end, but the beginning. Jesus rose from the dead. The Resurrection is God s fulfillment of the Covenant. It is the doorway that leads to heaven. We don t endure the Cross for its own sake. We allow the cross to unite us to God so that we can participate in the Resurrection. Lent is followed by Easter. In dying to self, we rise with Christ to eternal life. Thank you to the Parents Association for hosting a wonderful St. Patrick s Day Party. Over 150 people came together to celebrate an evening of good food, music, and fellowship. I especially enjoyed the Irish Step Dancing. Thank you to Nora Kerr and her advanced class at the Old Town School of Lincoln Park School of Folk Music. We had a wonderful time at the Multi-Parish Mission at St. Pascal last week. About 350 people attended each of the three nights to hear Fr. Presta s reflections on Mary and the Sacraments. The purpose of a Lenten mission is to help us reflect more deeply on some aspect of our faith in a way that will draw us more closely to Christ. Thank you to Fr. Presta, Dennis Costanzo for coordinating the music, the people of St. Pascal and all the volunteers. Our Parish Reconciliation Service will be celebrated this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. This will be an evening of prayer, scripture and song with opportunities for individual confessions (see page two). The last scheduled opportunity for Reconciliation before Easter is this Saturday, March 24 from 4:00 4:45 p.m. Holy Week begins next weekend on Palm Sunday and the distribution of palms. There will be a second collection next weekend for our Easter Flowers. The Parents Association will hold the Easter Candy Sale after all the masses next weekend as well. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

8 Page 8 March 18, 2018 Fr. Scott s Time Away A Mini-Sabbatical Dear Friends, I want to let you know that I will be away from St. Robert Bellarmine Parish beginning Monday, March 19 th and returning on Sunday, April 22 nd. In the Archdiocese of Chicago there is a policy that permits a priest to take a sabbatical every 7-10 years. The sabbaticals typically last from two to three months. I have been ordained a priest for 35 years and have yet to take a sabbatical, which is a time for rest, prayer, reading and personal development. At 63 years old, with seven years of fulltime ministry ahead of me, I decided six months ago to take some time away, and adjusted my calendar to do so. The majority of my time will be in Los Altos, CA at the Jesuit Retreat House named El Retiro. I am very much looking forward to having some time by myself, and time to renew my spirit with God s grace. Please know that I will bring you with me in my thoughts and prayers during this time of retreat, and I would ask for your prayers. Since I will not be in the Parish community at Easter time, let me take this opportunity to wish you a very happy and holy Easter. Blessings, Fr. Scott
