1 ALL ABOUT EASTER The name for the day of Jesus Ressurection is Pasch (Passover) in all but English speaking countries The English Name: Easter might come from the early English word Eastre, which was either the name for spring, a festival held in spring or a pagan goddess. Or it might come from the German word Eostarun, meaning dawn. The Date: Most Western Christian churches observe Easter on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere a date that can fall on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25. Eastern Orthodox churches consider other factors as well, which often means a later celebration. The Colors: White, yellow, purple and green are the most popular. White stands for light, purity and joy; Yellow for glory of God, Heaven; Purple for royalty or suffering; Green symbolizes new life. Traditions: The custom of decorating eggs dates to the Middle Ages. Some symbols: Lilies: Symbolize new life Eggs: Also represent new life Rabbits, bunnies: Symbolize the fertility of spring Lamb: Represents Jesus; relates his death to that of the lamb sacrificed on the first Passover Candles: The lighting and extinguishing of candles represents the life and death of Jesus THE JELLY BEAN PRAYER RED is for the blood He gave. GREEN is for the grass He made. YELLOW is for the sun so bright. ORANGE is for the edge of night. BLUE is for the sins we made. WHITE is for the grace He gave. PURPLE is for His hour of sorrow. PINK is for our new tomorrow. A bag full of jelly beans, colorful and sweet, is a prayer, is a promise, is a special treat. HAPPY EASTER! Scripture Verse for the Week: He bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. - Jn 20:5-7 Readings for the week of April 1, 2018: Sunday: Acts 10:34a, 37-43/Ps 118:1-2, 16-17, [24]/Col 3:1-4 or 1 Cor 5:6b-8/Jn 20:1-9 or Mk 16:1-7or Lk 24:13-35 Monday: Acts 2:14, 22-33/Ps 16:1-2, 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11 [1]/Mt 28:8-15 Tuesday: Acts 2:36-41/Ps 33:4-5, 18-19, 20, 22 [5b]/ Jn 20:11-18 Wednesday: Acts 3:1-10/Ps 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8-9 [3b]/Lk 24:13-35 Thursday: Acts 3:11-26/Ps 8:2, 5, 6-7, 8-9 [2ab]/Lk 24:35-48 Friday: Acts 4:1-12/Ps 118:1-2, 4, 22-24, [22]/ Jn 21:1-14 Saturday: Acts 4:13-21/Ps 118:1, 14-15, 16-18, [21a]/Mk 16:9-15 Next Sunday: Acts 4:32-35/Ps 118:2-4, 13-15, [1]/1 Jn 5:1-6/Jn 20:19-31 No Faith Formation Classes on Sunday, April 1st And Sunday, April 8th Please Remember Ron Rittenhour James Geig The Church office will be closed Monday, April 2nd. 2 Easter Sunday: April 1, 2018 Family Perspective April 1, 2018 In the confusion of Easter morning, Peter proved to be a mentor to the younger disciple in today s gospel. Even though the younger disciple arrived first at the empty tomb, he waited for Peter to make sense of this confusing event. Children in our families and neighborhoods also need mentors to help them make sense out of the confusing times and bewildering events that surround their lives. We can help our young people see and believe just like the young disciple in the gospel. Target Donations for BACM: APRIL PASTA Thank you for your generosity. Easter Flower Donations Thank you to all who donated to the Easter Flowers this year. An insert in the bulletin this week has a listing of all those generous parishioners who donated. The listing is printed on both sides of the inserts. VIRTUS TRAINING Any parishioner/volunteer having contact with children MUST be VIRTUS trained. 5 Easter The Twenty-third Sunday: Sunday in Ordinary Time Easter Reflection by St. Melito For the sake of suffering humanity Christ came down from heaven to earth, clothed in our humanity in the Virgin s womb and was born a man. Having then a body capable of suffering, he took the pain of fallen humankind upon himself; he triumphed over the diseases of soul and body that were its cause, and by his Spirit, which is incapable of dying, he dealt our destroyer, death, a fatal blow. He was led forth like a lamb; he was slaughtered like a sheep. He ransomed us from our servitude to the world, as he ransomed Israel from the hand of Pharaoh. He sealed our souls with his own Spirit, and our body with his own blood. He cast the devil into mourning as Moses cast Pharaoh into mourning. He is the Passover that is our salvation. September April10, 1, An Easter Prayer Loving and eternal God, for three days your Son laid in the tomb. We now celebrate the glory of his resurrection and rejoice in the new life he promises to all who are faithful to him. Fill all believers with the joy of Easter. May we come to share completely in the new life of Christ who now lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen. Women s Renewal Molding our Hearts for Jesus Saturday, April 28. Come and spend time with other women, young and old, and see how God has used the gifts, limitations, and experiences of our lives to shape us into the women we are today. Invitations are available at the church entrances or by , donna.sponsler@gmail.com
