1 Shrine Herald July 22, 2012 We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship The following excerpts are taken from a document published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. It is not easy reading. However, I believe it is essential reading as we form our opinions and exercise our right to vote responsibly. What Does the Church Say About Catholic Social Teaching in the Public Square? Seven Key Themes A consistent ethic of life should guide all Catholic engagement in political life. This Catholic ethic neither treats all issues as morally equivalent nor reduces Catholic teaching to one or two issues. It anchors the Catholic commitment to defend human life and other human rights, from conception until natural death, in the fundamental obligation to respect the dignity of every human being as a child of God. Catholic voters should use Catholic teaching to examine candidates positions on issues and should consider candidates integrity, philosophy, and performance. It is important for all citizens to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically, and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest (USCCB, living the Gospel of Life, no. 33). The following themes of Catholic social teaching provide a moral framework for decisions in public life. The Right to Life and the Dignity of the Human Person Human life is sacred. Direct attacks on innocent human beings are never morally acceptable. Within our society, life is under direct attack from abortion, euthanasia, human cloning, and destruction of human embryos for research. These intrinsic evils must always be Sharing Christ in and through the Church GOAL: $204,640 TOTAL PLEDGES: $149,477 % OF GOAL: 73% # OF COMMITMENTS: 600 continued on page 3...

Special Needs Religious Formation Program For the past 2 years we have had the wonderful opportunity to bring the faith to children with Special Needs. This past year we were blessed with an amazing group of children and parents and we are hoping to welcome more into the program this upcoming Fall Our focus again this year is preparing the children to be ready for the sacraments. We welcome all Children, those with Autism, Cognitive Impairment, ADHD, and any learning impairment. We work to prepare lessons for each child's own set of abilities and learning capacity so that they will be engaged and be able to learn at their own pace. The primary focus is to make learning about the faith enjoyable and inviting to each child, helping them to grow in the knowledge they need to be prepared to receive the grace filled and life giving sacraments! We will begin this Fall in October, and classes will be on Wednesday evenings beginning at 6:30 pm. If you have a child that you believe would benefit from these classes please contact Deacon Avery at , x422 and leave a message or if you prefer you can send an to tavery@shrinechurch.com and we will get back with you to schedule a time we can sit and discuss your child becoming a part of our group of awesome children! Many blessings, Barbara and Deacon Tom Avery MSW, LLMSW A Reminder Whenever your address, phone number, , or family status changes, please be sure to contact the parish office and update your information with us. It is critical that we keep our parishioner records up-to-date! Thank you!

This teaching also compels us as Catholics to oppose genocide, torture, unjust war, and the use of the death penalty, as well as to pursue peace and help overcome poverty, racism, and other conditions that demean human life. Call to Family, Community, and Participation The family, based on marriage between a man and a woman, is the fundamental unit of society. This sanctuary for the creation and nurturing of children must not be redefined, undermined, or neglected. Supporting families should be a priority for economic and social policies. How our society is organized in economics and politics, in law and public policy affects the well-being of individuals and of society. Every person and association has a right and a duty to participate in shaping society to promote the well-being of individuals and the common good. Rights and Responsibilities Every human being has a right to life, the fundamental right that makes all other rights possible. Each of us has a right to religious freedom, which enables us to live and act in accord with our God-given dignity, as well as a right to access to those things required for human decency food and shelter, education and employment, health care and housing. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities to one another, to our families, and to the larger society. Conclusion Next Week... Rosie, Carlito & Lord Stanley I will explain one more time because so many ask about Lord Stanley s call name. His full name is Lord Stanley s Cup of Briarwood. That is simply too long of a name to call when you want his immediate attention. Lord was ruled out, because it did not seem proper for a priest to be yelling Lord come now, Lord where are you. Father Maka suggested Stachu (Polish for Stan). We pronounce it Sta-who, rhyming with Yahoo. Divine Life Baptized in Christ Charles Joseph son of Charles and Colleen (Stroup) Hickman Lilian Grace daughter of Graeme and Noelle (Bronis) Turner Michael son of Peter and Aylin (Cittan) Samoray Sofia Grace daughter of Bryan and Ann Marie (Palomo) Rekucki Thomas Guy son of Thomas and Laura (Spisak) Van Haaren Banns of Marriage First Bann Kusai Badruy and Rqra Yousif Jeanette Kudsin and Kevin Rossiter Second Bann Courtney Robb and Matthew Wootkowski Little Flower Sculpture The Timothy P. Schmalz sculpture of Little Flower is being discontinued. The flagstone sculpture depicts this teenage Saint writing her poems to the Lord as her words take flight as angels and rise to heaven. The angel s wings take shape as petals to form a rose, the symbol of love, beauty and this Saint s own miracles of leaving us flowers from heaven. This beautiful sculpture is (9 H x 5 W x 5 D) and comes in Flagstone only. We were able to purchase the last remaining sculptures at a reduced price. The former selling price of $40 is now just $15 and are available in the National Shrine Gift Shop. If you have any questions, please contact Jack Hoolehan at the Gift Shop on , ext. 418.

Thank you! Life Matters In recent months, the phrase war on women has been touted by those in favor of the HHS Mandate and the insurance coverage of what is being called preventive services of contraception, sterilization and abortion inducing drugs. They would like the country to believe that the Catholic Church and the pro-life movement are anti-women because they are against making these services free to women. Nothing can be further from the truth. The Catholic Church teaches of the beauty and dignity of women and the pro-life movement continues to fight to give women the freedom to make informed, non-coerced choices about their lives and those of their babies. In the meantime, pro-abortion advocates continue to demonstrate how abortion is anti-women. Consider the most recent vote in the House of Representatives preventing passage of a bill that would ban sex-selection abortions. The legislation needed a two-thirds vote and Democrats voted overwhelmingly against the legislation. In an excerpt from a letter written by the National Right to Life Committee to every member of Congress urging lawmakers to support the ban, they say Multiple academic papers have put forward evidence that the practice of sex-selection by abortion is increasing in the United States, especially although not exclusively within communities of immigrants from Asia. For example, a study by researchers at the University of Connecticut, published in Prenatal Diagnosis in March 2011, concluded, The male to female live birth sex ratio in the United States exceeded expected biological variation for third+ births to Chinese, Asian Indians and Koreans, strongly suggesting prenatal sex selection. A recent poll conducted by the Lozier Institute found that 77% of respondents would support the enactment of laws prohibiting abortion in cases where the fact that the developing baby is a girl is the sole reason for seeking an abortion. Illinois, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma and Arizona have laws banning sex-selection abortions. In spite of video from Live Action showing Planned Parenthood s willingness to facilitate a sex-selection abortion, Congress failed to take action to protect future generations of American girls in favor of a woman s right to choose abortion even if that reason was just because they want a baby of another sex. Ask your Congressman how he voted on H.R and why. Did their vote really protect women? Crisis Pregnancy? Mother and Unborn Baby Care can help! Call Hurting from an abortion experience?
