1 Shrine Herald January 2, 2011 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Happy New Year With the Octave of Christmas, also New Year s Day and the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, falling on a Saturday this year, the obligation to attend Mass was abrogated. In other words, you were not obliged to attend Mass on January 1 this year. The other thing that happens this year is that the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord Jesus Christ which falls on the Sunday between January 1 and January 9 is celebrated this year on Sunday, January 2. That is as early as it can be. Next year it will be on January 8, the latest it can be. This Sunday, January 2, is the Solemnity of the Epiphany. On the Epiphany there is the ancient custom of announcing the date of Easter and the movable feasts of the coming year. THE PROCLAMATION OF THE DATE OF EASTER ON EPIPHANY IN THE YEAR 2011 Dear brothers and sisters, the glory of the Lord has shone upon us, and shall ever be manifest among us, until the day of his return. Through the rhythms of times and seasons let us celebrate the mysteries of salvation. Let us recall the year s culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord: his last supper, his crucifixion, his burial, and his rising celebrated between the evening of the twenty first of April and the evening of the twenty fourth of April. Each Easter as on each Sunday the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and death. From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Epiphany of the Lord Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, will occur on the ninth of March. The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on the fifth of June. Pentecost, the joyful conclusion of the season of Easter, will be celebrated on the twelfth of June. And this year the First Sunday of Advent will be on the twenty seventh of November. continued on page 3...

Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the Passover of Christ in the feasts of the Holy Mother of God, in the feasts of the Apostles and Saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed. To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come, Lord of time and history, be endless praise, for ever and ever. AMEN AMEN Liturgical Music I would like to take a moment to thank all of those involved in providing music for the many liturgical services of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. They are many and they are excellent. The variety of music provided is wonderful. Because we tend to go to the same liturgy every week, many parishioners have no idea of the number of groups involved. In addition to the High School, Academy, and Grade School choirs and choral groups, including the Shrine Catholic High School Goliards, there are other groups who provide music on a regular basis. They are: Saturday 6:30 Evening Mass Singers Richie Atto, 7:30 am Sunday Cantor 9:00 am Mass Folk Group Parish Choir 6:00 pm Sunday Contemporary Group Treble Choir (Children who sang so beautifully at the 6:30 Christmas Eve Mass) Taize Group Gabrielli Brass Ensemble (who have a wonderful Christmas CD with proceeds for the National Shrine Parish) A new Hispanic Group forming to sing at the Spanish Mass If you would like to share your talents you are more than welcome to try out for any of these groups. Rosie, Carlito, and Kodiak Kodiak has figured out how to gain access to all of the courtyard s 3 garden areas. We are working on fixing that problem. However, in the meantime, he has uncovered the fountain, dug up a portion of the irrigation system, and put paw and nose prints on every window. Over the past Christmas weekend, Heritage Hall appeared more like a popular exhibit at the Detroit Zoo. People were 4 and 5 deep looking out the windows at Kodi and his antics. Others were pointing up at Carlito in his cage. Well, when I was a child, I always wanted to be a zoo keeper, and here I am, pastor of Shrine. 5 January 2, 2011 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "As they brought forth from among their treasures mystical gifts, let us from our hearts bring forth something fit to offer Him." - Roman Breviary "The Magi did not give up their quest, although the star-at one point-disappeared from their sight. We should follow their example and their perseverance, even when we are in interior darkness. This is a trial of faith which is overcome only by the exercise of pure, naked faith. I know that He wills it, I know that God is calling, and this suffices for me: Scio cui credidi et certus sum (2 Timothy 1, 12). I know whom I have believed. No matter what happens, I shall trust Him." - Divine Intimacy Open Holy Hours: Monday, 1 am, 4 am, 7 pm; Friday, 8 am; and Saturday, 3 pm. Partners are desired for the following Holy Hours: Sunday, 10 am, 2, 5, 6 pm; Monday, 1, 5, 10 am and 5, 6, 7, pm; Wednesday, 11 am, 4, 5, 11 pm; Thursday, 10, 11 am and 2, 8 pm; Friday, 9, 11 am; and the 1 pm hour on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. Call Marie Lama at if you are interested in a Holy Hour or are interested in subbing. Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us! National Shrine of the Little Flower Perpetual Mass Enrollment Cards The National Shrine of the Little Flower now has a beautiful six page perpetual Mass card available at the Parish rectory office and the National Shrine gift shop. With this enrollment, the person or persons, living or deceased, will be remembered in a Mass once a month at the National Shrine on or near the first Friday of each month. The Masses will be celebrated every month in perpetuity. The suggested offering for the enrollment card and a card suitable to be given to family or individuals is $25 per card. A Family Perspective Today s Gospel tells us all Jerusalem was upset because King Herod was deeply troubled. A similar ripple effect happens in families: one person s negative attitude can affect the whole family. If you want a peaceful and joyful home, it must start with you. Life Matters During this season, we continued to hear of cases where Nativities could not be displayed, Christmas songs could not be sung or Merry Christmas could not be said. Some people would say we cannot impose our beliefs on others and we must be more tolerant. The same claim is made by those who believe it s merciful to allow abortion, euthanasia, or embryonic stem cell research. Here s what Fulton Sheen said about tolerance more than 75 years ago America, it is said, is suffering from intolerance. It is not. It is suffering from tolerance of right and wrong, truth and error, virtue and evil, Christ and chaos. Our country is not nearly so much overrun with the bigoted as it is overrun with the broadminded In the face of this broadmindedness, what the world needs is more intolerance (Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, A Plea for Intolerance, 1931, cited in Christ or Chaos ) We cannot tolerate the destruction of human life. Don t be afraid to speak the truth! Crisis Pregnancy? 7 January 2, 2011 Page 7 Lending Library Happy New Year! It is a time when many people make resolutions or just generally take stock of where they are in their lives. It is a time for thinking. What better time to delve into the book, Thoughts For All Times by Right Rev. John S. Vaughan? "In very articulate ways Msgr. Vaughan treats the truth that if it were not for the love of God none of us would ever have been born. Before a person is created they are first in the mind of God and contemplated by God. There is no gain for God in His creation. There is no one and nothing in all of God's creation that could give Him something which He does not already have.... It is purely and only through God's self sacrificing love for us that we have any life at all." (page ix). Have you thought about that lately? Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). 8 Page 8 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings Fourth Grade December has brought with it a flurry of activity as we work on multiple Christian service projects! This past month we held a sweatshirt drive for Holy Cross Center in Pontiac, made Christmas cards for the troops in Afghanistan, collected canned goods for a needy family through St. Vincent DePaul and hosted the Shrine Blood Drive on December 19. It is truly heartwarming to see the joy in the hearts of these children as they share their gifts with others in need. In math we ve mastered the mysteries of double digit multiplication, and now we re working with data to find mean, median, mode, range and outliers. Early Michigan pioneers have been a focus of our social studies lessons this month. We learned about covered wagons bringing settlers across the Appalachians, through Ohio and on into Michigan. The Erie Canal made it possible for immigrants to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to Detroit entirely by water! In religion, students researched a saint and then created a Powerpoint slideshow or movie. They shared their projects on the class wiki. Fourth graders have chosen Advent buddies to do kindnesses for and pray for throughout the season. We ve explored the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick. Students understand these gifts from God bring us deeper and closer to Him. We recently finished up a Readers Theatre unit in our reading classes. Students were able to participate in a play performance where group cooperation and collaborative work is a must for success! The fourth graders have enjoyed reading a variety of genres using our reading anthology and an assortment of chapter books during Book Club sessions. Did you know that even fourth graders still love to listen to read alouds? So far this year they have enjoyed hearing The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Tale of Despereaux. Reading aloud to children of all ages promotes an interest in reading and models proper fluency. Reading and writing go hand in hand and the fourth graders have been practicing how to show a story and not just tell a story. They have created some wonderful grabber sentences, the kind that tempt the reader and encourage them to keep reading! Students applied these strategies while writing personal narratives and current event news articles. It s easy to see that there s never a dull moment in the fourth grade! 12 Page 12 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Dear Sisters and Brothers, From that very first Christmas the news has been good: as the angel announced, "I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord" (Lk. 2:10-11). In sitting down to compose this Christmas greetings to you and your families, I am vividly aware that we, in this region at this time in our history, are particularly glad to have "good news." It is my heartfelt hope that the Church's proclamation again this Christmas of the good news that God is with us in Christ Jesus will enkindle new hope in your hearts. To do my own "bit" toward fanning into flame the spark that is struck from the Christmas Gospel, I want to share my reflection about one particular quality of the good news of the Incarnation (literally, the "enfleshment" of God the Son). This year I want us to think together about how St. Paul framed his announcement of this good news. The Apostle put it this way in his Letter to the Galatians: "[W]hen the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman..." (4:4). What is the meaning of St. Paul saying that it was "in the fullness of time" that God's Son was born a man? To get some insight into the answer to that question will, I think, take us a long way toward appreciating how "good" the good news of Christmas is. At a first glance, the point in Israel's history when God chose to fulfill his promise to his people that he would send them a Messiah, hardly seemed to be the "fullness of time." Rather, it looked to the chosen people to be the "emptiest" of times. One of my favorite Scripture commentators, Cardinal Albert Van Hoye, observes that, while God prepared for the birth of the Savior by the deliberate plan he worked out through all the generations between Adam and Christ, to human eyes the time of the Lord's coming seemed to be an age without hope. Israel found itself subjected to the rule of a pagan emperor, no longer governed by a king of the House of David under the law of the covenant. The people who were once freed from Egypt felt themselves to be virtual slaves in their own land. The Messiah's birth happened in a small town. Joseph, though of David's line, was an unknown, with a humble trade. But, as the Cardinal reminds us, "God is the master of the impossible, and he carried out his design when everything conspired to lead one to expect nothing." The point: God, by the sovereign power of his love, filled the "emptiest" of times to the full. He made it "the fullness of time." He transformed what seemed, until the very moment before the Angel appeared, to be a day of unremitting gloom into the dawn of a new age, the final age, the age of the triumph of life over death, of good over evil, of love over sin and selfishness. And, God turned everything upside down by taking what looked totally impotent and filling it with power. He took the sterility of a virgin and made it fruitful beyond measure: Mary, who "did not know man," gave birth to the founder of new human race. He who is God from God, begotten of the Father from before time, took on our flesh and filled his human nature with divine life. The omnipotent Son of God took to himself the weakness of a new-born infant and made that impotence powerful beyond measure, invincibly powerful to save us. That is how God make the empty time into the fullness of time. This is the good news; indeed, the very best news. I would like to make two sorts of applications to identify how this good news is not an abstract proposition but is good for us in the practical fabric of our day to day lives. Let me start by mentioning the life of our community here in southeast Michigan. While the news about the troubles in our region has abated to some degree, not many days go by without some story that describes the seemingly insurmountable challenges we face: unemployment, urban blight, decline in education, violence, the collapse of family life, and the dissolution of the sound moral consensus that has guided us for generations all giving rise to a feeling that we are going through a epic period of social dislocation. All of that serves as an outline of what could be fairly named as the "emptiness" of our time. And yet, God makes this the fullness of time for any of us who accept his offer of his Son as our salvation. He is with us in this hour. To the degree we turn to him in our weakness, he fills us with his strength. continued at the top of next page...

13 January 2, 2011 Page 13 Archbishop s letter continued... The strength with which God fills up the emptiness of our time comes in at least two forms. First, the Lord Jesus gives us strength to bear the challenges of our age with courage and trust. He is with us, and he will not go away. With him we can persevere, and in persevering we have already conquered. Second, Christ does not only give us the power to endure, he offers us the help we need to meet our challenges and rebuild our community. His grace is an immeasurable power for the renewal of our age. With him as our King, as we strive to build our lives according to his plan, we will advance toward the rebirth of our community. The good news of Christmas is that by God's grace, now can be "the fullness of time" for our society. Now, let me go on to consider how Christmas is good news at a more personal level. All of us experience the emptying out from our lives of things we hold most dear. Our hopes and ambitions so frequently come to nothing. We lose those we love, sometimes by separation and eventually by death. We lose our health, our ability to accomplish the things that give us satisfaction. Some of us lose our freedom. And finally, each of us will have the breath of life itself taken from us. And yet, in our moments of personal emptiness, God is ready to fill us with himself. If we turn to him in trust, if we abandon ourselves to him and his providential love for us, Christ will fill us beyond measure. Whatever our experience of loss, if we entrust it to him, he will transform into a deeper share in his life. Any hour, even the saddest and darkest hour in our lives, is the fullness of time in Christ Jesus. If God can turn the very murder of the Author of life into the means for the conquering of death and the triumph of life, then he will turn our sorrow into joy if we let him. The Holy Eucharist is God's clearest pledge that what I have written is an accurate expression of the mind and heart of Christ. The Eucharist is our celebration of the mystery of faith: that by dying, Christ destroyed death. The Eucharist in its seeming insignificance is the sacrament of God's all-powerful powerlessness, the Love that willed to lay aside omnipotence at his birth in order to conquer only by the depth of his love on the cross to conquer not by compulsion, not by force of might, but only "by drawing all things to himself" when he was "lifted up" (Jn. 12:32). Yes, Christmas is the fullness of time: the first Christmas day and Christmas day 2010 no matter what leads you to feel empty. And the "fullest of the fullness" of Christmas day is our sharing in the Holy Eucharist. There, at the altar, God is most with us. Our Christmas Mass is his promise that he will never stop sharing in our weakness and that he will never stop filling our weak selves with himself. And filled with Christ, we are full beyond measure. With all my heart I pray that you and those you love have a blessed celebration of Christ's birth. My particular intention is that when we are at Mass this Christmas all of us will be of one heart and mind with each of us expectantly asking for and confidently accepting Christ in his fullness, and so never be empty again. I promise to bring with me to the altar that prayer for you, the people I love and serve; please make it your prayer for me, your priest and pastor. Merry Christmas. Your brother in the Lord, Archbishop Allen Vigneron Word of Life Men and women were created for something great, for infinity. The desire for a more meaningful life is a sign that God created us and that we bear His imprint. God is life, and that is why every creature reaches out towards life. Because human beings are made in the image of God, we do this in a unique and special way. We reach out for love, joy and peace. ~ Pope Benedict XVI, Message for World Youth Day (2011) National Marriage Encounter National Marriage Encounter is a weekend experience of rediscovery for couples who want to make their good marriages even better. 14 Page 14 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower The Introductory Rites When the Church gathers for the celebration of the Eucharist, the Introductory Rites are meant to focus the community s attention on the mystery to be celebrated and prepare them to participate more worthily in that mystery. There are many elements used in these rites: Entrance Procession and Hymn: In every celebration of the Eucharist, the procession of liturgical ministers into the midst of the people who have gathered is led by the Cross. We are Christians who follow the Cross on which Christ died to save us from our sins. That same Christ is here with us for He promised, Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them (Matthew 18:20). Christ is present in the community gathered. He is present in the priest who makes the invisible visible to the eyes of faith. Christ will lead us in this celebration. All have come together to praise and honor God for the gift of his only Son, who reveals to us the way to eternal happiness. The Cross is accompanied by at least two lighted candles and sometimes by incense. The Gospel Book is carried by the deacon and placed on the altar where, later, the bread and wine will be placed, because the food of the Word cannot be separated from the food of the Eucharist. And we sing. Sign of the Cross: Upon reaching the chair, the priest leads the assembly in the Sign of the Cross to remind us of our baptism, which gave us the right to participate in this mystery. Romano Guardini, the noted theologian, wrote: When we cross ourselves, let it be with a real sign of the cross let us make a large, unhurried sign, from fore head to breast, from shoulder to shoulder, consciously feeling how it includes the whole of us It is the holiest of signs (Sacred Signs, 1956, p.13). Allow Christ who was crucified on the cross to touch our bodies and draw us into the mystery. Greeting: Upon arriving at the chair, the priest greets the assembly. The Lord be with you. This greeting is, in reality, expressive of the desire that the people actually experience the presence and power of the Lord in the community they form. It is Christ who greets us with this wish. The assembly responds: And with your Spirit. This response will be new for us. It is a more formal language, to be sure, but it is there to remind us that this gathering is not like any other gathering. It is special. By restoring the more literal ancient greeting, And with your Spirit, the community will be calling more expressly on the spirit of the priest. Act of Penitence: One of the things that Christ was most frequently criticized for by leaders of the Jews was that he drew sinners to himself. He ate with sinners, he cured sinners, and reached out to sinners who were most in need of God s mercy. As the community of faithful gathers to celebrate this paschal mystery, it acknowledges that it too is a sinful people. We confess our sinfulness to God, to each other, and to all the angels and saints. Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling with Water: During the Easter Season, and sometimes on Sundays and more solemn occasions, the Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling may be used as a reminder of our baptism and thereby of our call to share in the Paschal Mystery. Gloria: This hymn is often called the Angelic Hymn because its first words were used by angels at the birth of Christ in Bethlehem. As we join the choirs of angels and sing the glory and praise of God, we are reminded of the great gift God has given to us in the Incarnation. Christ was sent by the Father to become truly flesh of our flesh and like us in all things but sin. We are filled with awe that God would do this for us and so we cry out in hymn the glory of God the Father, in his Son, and through the Holy Spirit. Although it is permitted to recite the Gloria, we must realize that something of the awesomeness of the mystery it reminds us of can be lost in mere recitation. Opening Prayer [Collect]: The Introductory Rites end with the Opening Prayer or Collect, the prayer of the gathered community who, having acknowledged its sinfulness but having rejoiced in the Triune God, is now aware that it is in God s presence. The community is invited to pray and given a brief time to silently present its needs to God. The priest then collects these prayers and presents them to the Father through the Son and in the Holy Spirit. The people make the prayer their own by responding Amen. We are now prepared to hear God s Word.

15 January 2, 2011 Page 15 Making a Charitable Gift through an IRA Charitable Rollover Normally, a distribution from your IRA is taxed as ordinary income. However, federal tax legislation just enacted allows you, for the remainder of 2010 and throughout 2011, if you are 70½ or older, to make a direct gift from your IRA to the Church through your parish, the Catholic Services Appeal, the Archdiocese of Detroit Endowment Foundation, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, an archdiocesan institution or other qualified charity without the distribution taxed as income to you. The new law also provides that you may consider an IRA distribution made in January 2011 as made in The IRA charitable rollover law may provide a very good charitable giving vehicle if you are age 70 ½ and take the standard deduction rather than itemize deductions on your tax return. The law may also reduce the tax impact on your Social Security benefits. Your IRA could be considered a special fund for distributions to the Church and charities without the normal consequences of reporting additional taxable income. The distribution must be from your IRA, not a 401(k) or other retirement plan. However, consult with your financial or tax advisor about the possibility of transferring funds from one of these other plans to establish an IRA, with the distribution to charity coming from the newly established IRA. The IRA distribution must be a direct charitable gift and not a distribution to a donor-advised fund, a charitable remainder trust or for a charitable gift annuity. To take advantage of the IRA charitable rollover to support the Church, please review the following helpful tips on how to handle your charitable gift correctly: Contact your IRA custodian or representative before making a gift to arrange for the proper transfer of funds from your IRA directly to the Church and other qualified charities. The check issued from the IRA must be made payable to the charity. If you have elected to have income tax withheld from your normal IRA distributions, advise your IRA administrator not to withhold taxes from distributions to charity. While this topic is fresh on your mind, ask your attorney and financial advisor how to make the Church a beneficiary of your will or trust or IRA. For more information about how you and the Church can benefit from an IRA charitable rollover, contact the parish office or the Archdiocese Department of Development and Stewardship at These helpful tips are only for your information on this change in the IRA law and are not to be considered as legal, tax or financial advice. You should consult with your legal, tax and financial advisors to implement the benefits of the IRA charitable rollover law and related matters. Donor Wall Directory Now Available in Heritage Hall In an effort to make it easier to find your family name on the Heritage Hall Donor Wall, an alphabetized directory is now available to assist you with your search. The directory is located at the base of the statue. All we ask is that you return the directory to the base of the statue so that all parishioners can use it to find their family names as well. Volunteers needed to help SSVDP with tax preparation The Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Detroit is teaming up with other agencies locally to offer free tax preparation for low income families or individuals, and senior citizens. It will be offered in various locations around southeast Michigan. Many low income families qualify for special tax credits that could amount to hundreds of dollars, but aren t aware of them. By volunteering, you could make a difference. Volunteers would need to commit for twelve weeks, 1 2 days per week, beginning with a two week training program in January.
