1 Shrine Herald November 21, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Prepare the Way Next Sunday, November 28, is the First Sunday of Advent and the beginning of the 2011 Liturgical Year. Advent is a time of prayer and reflection as we prepare to celebrate the mystery of the incarnation, the birth of Jesus the Christ Child. In the midst of all the hustle and bustle of the so called holiday season we as the people of God are invited into a peace pregnant with hope as we prepare to welcome our Savior. Our parish patron, Saint Thérèse had a great love for the infant Jesus and took as her formal religious name, Thérèse of the Child Jesus. She attributes her deep conversion to a miraculous change of heart on Christmas. We of the National Shrine of the Little Flower are moved to follow the example of Saint Thérèse making every Christmas a very special spiritual time. To help us prepare, the parish is providing 1,000 copies of The Magnificat Advent Companion. This little book includes a reflection for each day of Advent. It also has prayers for the blessing of an Advent Wreath, the Christmas Tree, and a prayer before the manger to be used in the home. There is also a penance service that could be used by a family in preparation for Christmas. You will find the books in the pamphlet racks of the church until they run out. The books are provided without cost. If you would like to help with the expense you can do so by making a donation to the National Shrine of the Little Flower. You can also order a copy and/or a subscription to Magnificat to be sent to your home for a cost. Simply go to online. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. continued on page 3... Royal Oak, MI Our Lord Jesus Christ the King Thanksgiving Day Thursday, November 25 9 am Mass

We prepare our hearts and homes to recognize and honor the presence of Jesus who dwells with us. Sometimes we who have so much of this world s goods are too full to recognize our own spiritual needs. We have a need to make a difference in the lives of others. Advent time helps us. Advent helps us focus on all human beings and give special care to those, who live in poverty. Jesus, who was born in poverty and who had not much of this world s comfort, expands our hearts and minds in Advent. Please visit the Giving Tree and take an envelope. It invites you to respond with love to reach out to those who need to feel Jesus love through you. Please make a sacrifice on behalf of someone who needs to feel your hope, your faith and your love. Your gifts will give special help for the Christmas needs of children and elderly folks of several inner city parishes, pregnancy crisis centers, our homeless population and other projects serving those in great need. Checks should be written to Shrine Church Giving Tree. Please place your donation in the weekend collection, mail them or bring them to the rectory by December 12, if possible. No money should be left near the Giving Tree. 3 November 21, 2010 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Thanksgiving Many people mistakenly think that we as Americans have celebrated Thanksgiving Day from the days of the Pilgrims and Native Americans in thanks for a bountiful harvest. The truth of the matter is that President Abraham Lincoln instituted the holiday in 1863 during the Civil War. He did not have the harvest in mind. He wanted Americans to celebrate the holiday as a sign of unity and thanksgiving to God. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens (President Abraham Lincoln, Proclamation, October 3, 1863). Could there be a better way of celebrating this day of Thanksgiving and Praise to God than by attending Holy Mass? The word Eucharist means Thanksgiving. The word Eucharist comes from the Greek words eucharistein and eulogein, which recall the Jewish blessings that proclaim especially during a meal God s works: creation, redemption, and sanctification. We are united as one body, one family sharing in the one bread and one cup of Christ. Mass on Thanksgiving Day here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower will be at 9 am. Come and give thanks and praise to God. Graffiti This past week, graffiti that was both racist and blasphemous was spray painted on the Grade School and the tower of the church. It happened late Monday evening. If you ever notice anything unusual around parish buildings, please report it. I also ask your prayers for the person or persons who do such things that they may experience a conversion and a change of heart. Rosie, Carlito & Kodiak All three critters are looking forward to Thanksgiving but Carlito most of all. He is looking forward to getting a great big turkey drumstick bone. It just does not seem right that the dogs cannot have bird bones but the bird can. Is there no justice in the animal kingdom? 5 November 21, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "O Lord, grant that I may always acknowledge You as the King and sovereign Ruler of my soul." "Everything I have I have received from You; how, then, could I fail to understand that You hold all rights over me? Yet You are a King who seems to take no account of His sovereign rights. Why did You have to abase Yourself to the obscurity of Bethlehem, to humiliate Yourself even to dying on the Cross, even to shedding all Your Blood in order to win my heart? My heart, my whole life, and all my being already belong to You, because You are my Creator and because I was created for Your glory. But You willed to forget all Your rights and You came to me like a beggar, seeking my poor heart. O Jesus, how can I still resist Your infinite love? Take my heart; take my whole being; and make me a living praise of Your glory." - Divine Intimacy Open Holy Hours: Sunday, 8 and 9 am; Monday, 1 am and 7 pm; and Friday, 8,11 am and 4 pm. Life Matters On October 3, 1789, President George Washington proclaimed that Thursday, November 26 would be set aside as "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer." It was the first official Thanksgiving Day proclamation of the new nation. Seventy-four years later, on October 3, 1863, Abraham Lincoln set up the fourth Tuesday of November as a national thanksgiving holiday. FDR made a final change in 1941, moving the holiday to the fourth Thursday of November. Below is a large excerpt from George Washington's original Proclamation, with modern spelling. "Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor- and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness. Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, let us praise the Author of Creation and give Him thanks for the gift of Life and all opportunities to protect it in all its stages. 7 November 21, 2010 Page 7 Lending Library As Advent begins, a very small book, The Shepherd's Prayer: A Christmas Novel, only 123 pages, could be an inspiration to get into the mood of the coming of Christmas. It is easy to read, but touching and captivating. It is the story of "A young man orphaned as a baby [who] sets off to discover the truth about the circumstances of his birth, the fate of his parents, and his heritage." (Back cover). Section 2, Seasonal. Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). For information call Kathy McGuire at or JoAn Gilleran at Word of Life As advances in medicine and other factors lead to increased longevity, it is important to recognize the presence of growing numbers of older people as a blessing for society. Every generation can learn from the experience and wisdom of the generation that preceded it. Indeed the provision of care for the elderly should be considered not so much an act of generosity as the repayment of a debt of gratitude. 10 Page 10 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings Fifth Grade Fifth graders have had a wonderful start to the school year! Currently in English we are working on a poetry unit. Students have been enjoying trying new types of poetry as well as revisiting other types. In reading students are starting a realistic fiction book report. Each student will try to persuade the class to read his or her book through a persuasive presentation and writing piece. There have been exciting visitors to fifth grade in recent weeks. Costumed saints have visited us and talked about their lives. Many of these saints have also visited other grades. We have also made power point presentations about the saints and shared them with one another through our SmartBoard technology. Bibles are in use every day to learn more about God s Word, and we recently completed a series of verses that are the scriptural basis for the rosary. In social studies we have been studying early American civilizations. In slide show presentations we have been amazed to see the chinampas (floating gardens) built by the Aztecs to feed their growing population. We ve compared the straw bridges built to connect these roads to the bridges in the Indiana Jones movies. We have really learned a lot about civilizations and how they were built near water for drinking, farming, transportation and trading purposes. It is all about chemical reactions in grade 5 science. In the science lab we tested four powders with three liquids, looking for clues that a reaction took place. The students were amazed at the gas bubbles and color changes that they witnessed. More scientific excitement is going on at home. The students are conducting a science experiment to demonstrate that different substances have different freezing points. We are using the scientific method to set up and complete our data. In math class the students collected data using a survey. They analyzed that data for mean, median, mode and range, and completed cumulative frequency tables. We are also working on multiplication of larger numbers and decimals. There is never a slow moment in grade 5! 11 November 21, 2010 Page 11 Roamin with Rosie Happy Feast Day of Christ the King! It is a wonderful day in which we celebrate the Kingship of Jesus over all of the world. One place where we honor His Kingship in our Church is the Blessed Sacrament Altar. One of the first things we see is the tabernacle door which has a lit candle signifying the Light of the World. You will see wheat and grass signifying the body and blood of Jesus. If we look above the altar, we see Jesus giving communion to a boy and a girl. The Pelican is a symbol of martyrdom. (A mother Pelican will pierce its own breast to feed its young). On the lower part of the altar, we see IHCOYC XPICTOC which means Jesus Christ in Greek. There are adoring angels at the top of each gate, and there is a bronze crown that covers the entire area. What a great place to worship and adore Jesus! The Feast of Christ the King also signifies the end of the church year. Next week, we will begin a new Church year. Do you know what the first Sunday of the Church year is called? What colors will be draped in the Church and on the Altar? Why? Please let me know at rosie@shrinechurch.com.
