1 Shrine Herald July 10, 2011 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time CSA If you have not yet done so, please pick up your CSA pledge card after the morning masses this Sunday or at the parish office early in the week. All the cards not picked up will be mailed out later in the week. I continue to be encouraged by the generosity of a small but committed number of people in our parish. If everyone were as generous, we would be way over the top by now. In the bible, tithing (giving 10% of one s income) is not an option but a matter of justice and responsibility. Vicariate The South Oakland Vicariate is at the stage of making the first set of recommendations to the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council as part of the Together in Faith Phase 2 planning process. I encourage you to read the article in the Vicariate Bulletin which is an insert in the Shrine Herald. The process will continue in the Fall with the responses of the APC. Father Boguslaw Migut Many of you will remember that last summer Father Boguslaw Migut spent several weeks with us while he was doing research and brushing up on his English skills. Father Migut is a professor of Liturgical Theology at the University of Lublin, the largest Catholic university in Poland. He will be with us for the next month and will be helping out with masses and confessions. We in the rectory really enjoy his presence. On occasion you may see him walking with me and Kodiak. We want Kodi to think of him as a member of the pack. Pilgrimage in October We are still looking for a few more people to join our pilgrimage this October. It is a great trip. We will be going to Portugal, Spain, and Italy. In Portugal we will pray and celebrate Mass at Fatima where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the three shepherd children. It is one of the major pilgrimage destinations of the world. In Spain we will visit one of the oldest pilgrimage destinations, Santiago de Compostela. We will also visit Madrid, Toledo and the surrounding area. In Italy we will visit Assisi, Florence, and of course Rome and the Vatican. If all goes well we will also attend an audience with His Holiness Benedict XVI. continued on page 3...

WONDER OF WONDERS, what a WONDERFUL DAY! I thank God for the beautiful day that He shared with all of us on June 26. I thank all of the generous people who planned, worked, and made the Golden Jubilee of my priestly ordination such a fabulous celebration. All you wonderful women and men in the blue aprons and shirts worked wonders to create a beautiful atmosphere of joy, unity, and generosity. The parish hall (gymnasium) became a bright, airy, dwelling place for brightly colored kites, red, green, and blue, that drifted above our heads. The walls, decorated with collages of picture stories decorated the walls, and green, blue, and yellow chairs surrounded circles, round tables, ready to feed an army. Outside two large tents set up with chairs and long tables invited guests and visitors to a banquet fit for a king. The Misty Blues Band beat out a steady diet of polkas and assorted music that had us tapping feet, helping us jump for joy. You not only prepared the feast, you made it all happen. Thank you for nourishing the souls of so many besides me. At the Mass for the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ we sang and prayed we offered THANKS to God and we prayed for each other. We listened to the outstanding singing and music of Paula Savaglio and the voices that transfixed us with songs like All Are Welcome, Amazing Grace, and Pescador de Hombres, (Lord When You Came to the Seashore). We even heard a bit of Polish, Ustop Matki (Mother at your feet is kneeling one who loves you tis your child). But, we all sang GLORY TO GOD in praise to the LORD who created COMMUNION from the gifts we all offered Him. THANK YOU for coming and making this event complete. Your presence and encouraging words tell us priests and Religious men and women that our vocation as God s servants is not only appreciated but valuable. The celebration may be over but I hope that you will continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood and Religious life. A SERVANT S PRAYER Almighty God thank You for creating me in your image and likeness. You have given me unique experiences and talents. Please help me put on the Apron of Service that I may share these gifts and give You Glory. Please nourish my Faith with prayer, scripture, and the Sacraments that I may put on the Apron of Service and celebrate Your presence in the world. Please give me the courage to put on the Apron of Service. May I be able to minister to Your people and discover that You are The Servant come to serve me. Please give me the strength to put on the Apron of Service that I may be Your BLESSING, helping You create communion by being one with You. THANK YOU LORD FOR THE VOCATION YOU OFFER ME. GIVE ME THE STRENGTH TO PUT ON THE APRON FOR YOU. THANK YOU for praying for and celebrating with all priests and Religious. THANK YOU DEAR PEOPLE OF GOD AT THE NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER. PLEASE pray for vocations to the priesthood and the Religious life. Thank You and God Bless You - Father Ed Prus

7 July 10, 2011 Page 7 Lending Library Taming the Restless Heart: How To Know God's Will and Dwell In the Peace It Brings by Gerald Vann is only 70 pages, but worth the read. "When troubles and worries threaten to drive God's peace from your heart, these pages will restore that peace and place it on a firm and lasting foundation.... He knows that it's easy to let little things disturb your peace; fears and ambitions, passing worries, a small slight, aches and pains in the body, vanities of the soul. so he shows you how God abides even in your troubles. Once you learn how to look for Him there, you'll find Him. Passionately, movingly and concisely, Father Vann shows you how." Section 8, Spirituality. Seeker of Truth is the story of a 20th century saint, a German-Jewish philosopher who converted to Catholicism, became a Carmelite nun (Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross), and was eventually martyred in Auschwitz. Her life story is that of a scholar searching for ultimate truth, about which John Paul II said in his homily at her canonization she finally discovered truth has a name, it is Jesus Christ. This challenging and engaging study is perfect for the modern woman who shares Stein s longing for the uncompromising truth found in the beauty of Church teaching. Cost for the class is $70, which includes all materials. The course will be facilitated by Melissa Thompson and Cindy Hind. Walker Dan has shared his personal story of struggle and victory with hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people going through life transitions. Those in attendance at one of his speaking events say it is inspirational and motivational. In addition he shares a process for developing a Personal Mission Statement that draws focus and clarity on the unique purpose we are all on this planet. With this critical tool those seeking employment can be much more strategic in their search. Sit back and enjoy a story teller, you may even find some inspiration for your life. Mr. Walker received his B.S. in Plastics Engineering Technology from Ferris State University in Big Rapids Michigan in Since then he has held a variety of Corporate Engineering positions in the Automotive Industry. He now runs his own consulting company in the area teaching his clients to listen to their customers with a more open mind. Mr. Walker has a deep, driving passion to make a significant and positive difference in our world by influencing individuals to improve and grow both professionally and personally. Would you like to offer your expertise to this group? Is your company looking for new employees? Attend our meeting or forward requests to shrine_career_net@yahoo.com. Attention National Shrine Parishioners! Many parishioners have requested that they receive updates and mailings via . We are working on implementing a more technology-efficient system to accommodate these requests. We would like to take this opportunity to gather and record a family address and update our parishioner records with this information. If you have an address, and you wish to have your parish record updated to include it, please fill out the form below and return it to the rectory or drop it in the Sunday offering basket in an envelope marked: Attn: Vicki Holtyn Update NATIONAL SHRINE PARISHIONER UPDATE Last Name: First Name: Street Address: City/Zip Code: Home Phone: Address:

Tennant You could be our next big winner! Holy Father s Prayer Intentions July 2011 General Intention: That Christians may contribute to alleviating the material and spiritual suffering of AIDS patients, especially in the poorest countries. Missionary Intention: For the religious who work in mission territories, that they may be witnesses of the joy of the Gospel and living signs of the love of Christ. A Family Perspective The stress and anxieties of family life are like thorns which choke off any opportunity to reflect on God s presence in our lives. Notice in today s Gospel Jesus left the house so He could connect with His Father.
