1 Shrine Herald March 21, 2010 Saint John Vianney This Wednesday evening at 7 pm in the church, Leonardo DeFilippis will present a live production presenting the story of St. Jean- Baptiste-Marie Vianney. Curé of Ars. During this year dedicated to priests, this is a fitting presentation in that St. John Vianney is the patron of parish priests. More information on the presentation can be found in this issue of Shrine Herald. Palm Sunday Next weekend the Masses of Palm Sunday begin with the blessing and procession with palms. The blessing will take place in Saint Thérèse Chapel, or weather permitting on the patio under the tower on the front of the church. Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Only at the 9 am Mass, if the weather is good, the blessing will take place at the outdoor altar on 12 mile road by the stations of the cross. Holy Week The 3 great liturgies of the Church Year take place during Holy Week. The Mass of the Lord s Supper, 7 pm, Holy Thursday, April 1 The Liturgy of the Lord s Passion, 1 pm, Good Friday, April 2 The Great Vigil of Easter, 8:30 pm, Holy Saturday, April 3 If at all possible, everyone should try to attend these most important celebrations marking the institution of the Eucharist, the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. All of Lent is a preparation for this great feast of our redemption. Financial Statement The financial statement for the fiscal year is published in this issue of the Shrine Herald. It continues to show that we are financially healthy, but we are not We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Fifth Sunday of Lent wealthy. In the statement you may notice a considerable difference between the two years in a number of areas. Fund Raising is due to the fact that the first phase of the Campaign With All Our Strength came to an end. Capital Expenditures differ because of the expenditure of money from the bond to make the improvements on the performing arts center at the High School. We now need to address paying the bond off. Academy Support was up because of a small class. This financial report shows the income and expenses of the church with the support to the schools. It does not include the income from tuition and the total expenses of the schools. We are running a very tight and well managed continued on page 3...

As a composite creature of body and soul, we live life at two levels and in two different worlds the physical world of matter and the unseen realm of the spiritual. It helps to understand our spiritual life by looking more closely at the more familiar surroundings here in our natural world. Last week, our reflection was on light as a symbol of God s presence in the world. We noted the beautiful spectrum of light seen in the colors of the rainbow. This week, to help better understand this spiritual side of Man, we will focus on only one of these colors: the color Green Green is the color of life in our world. Lush Green tropical forests teem with life, a marked difference from the stark somber tones that paint the barren desert. Green grass is alive and healthy; brown grass is dormant or dead. Trees bursting with Green in Spring signal the beginning of new life, but even all the glorious colors of Fall cannot mask the death of the leaves and the coming onslaught of Winter. Yet, even in the coldest climates, the Evergreens stand tall as a reminder that life still exists, and that all is well. As the color Green in the light spectrum is a mixture of both yellow and blue, its presence in plants is also a sure sign of another mixture the presence of life-giving elements of water, air, and sunlight. Green would not exist without a blending of yellow and blue. Life would not exist either without the constant mixture of these natural elements. When we see Green, we see growth and development synonymous with life in the world of nature. As children of the light, we are called to live a supernatural life that also involves a mixture. It is a life that begins with the waters of Baptism, is sustained in prayer with the guiding light of God s own grace, and is nourished by the Body of Christ, Himself, in the Eucharist. In the natural order, the greater care we give, the more we provide timely air, water, and light, the more Green things become. The same is true of our spiritual life but in this realm, the more we pray and the more we share the Eucharist, the greater the gifts and graces we receive from the Holy Spirit. The more we receive, the more Christlike we become. Today in the gospel reading about Lazarus, we see that Jesus rules both worlds. Martha, I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. As tiny green foliage appears in our gardens and green spots become buds on the trees, note the beginning of new life in our natural world. These, of course, are symbolic of the new spiritual life that began with each of us at Baptism, and is renewed and strengthened daily by the union of our prayers and good works with those of Jesus. Please let this Green remind us of our faith-life and our own growth and development as we move toward Jerusalem and the meaning of the Cross in a supernatural world of faith and grace. Attention all Parishioners Holy Thursday, the night of the Last Supper, holds special meaning for all priests as it is considered to be the inception of priesthood in the Catholic Church. The National Shrine Vocations Committee invites you to show your appreciation for the priests in our parish for all they do in supporting our faith community by sending them a kind word, a card, or letter of thanks on Holy Thursday. Please, no gifts. As we all know, the demands on the clergy are always increasing and their numbers are decreasing. We encourage you to affirm their hard work and dedication with a simple thank you. We wish you a blessed and joyous Easter, and we ask you to continue to pray for religious vocations. Please let our priests know you care.

We are strong and healthy, but there is nothing to spare. Finance Council In accord with the directives of the Archdiocese of Detroit, I have appointed a Finance Council for the National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish and Schools. This council will oversee the finances of Shrine, budgets, reporting, and strategic planning. The members of the Finance Council are: Mr. Thomas Cardelli, Mr. Brad Cross, Mr. John Cavazos, Mr. Harry Kemp, Mr. Andy Killiany, South Campus Director Mr. Kevin Sutherland, and North Campus Director Mr. Art Musucci. Mr. James Skaggs Director of Accounting and Mr. Matt York Development Director will serve as staff to the Finance Council. The Finance Committee of the Unified School Board will continue in existence as it has in the past making recommendations related to tuition schedules and school budgets which will then be reviewed by the Finance Council. I am extremely grateful to this very talented group of individuals for their willingness to serve the parish and schools in this capacity. He is only 2 weeks old, his birth date being March 8, 2010, so he is still with his mom. Russia has allowed me to adopt him. At this point, Rosie is tolerant of the idea of having a little brother. I can t say she is ecstatic, but then she hasn t even met him yet. Rosie will get a chance to meet him when he is about 8 weeks old. I love hearing from all of my smart friends. Did you know that Monsignor has been cutting back on my treats this Lent? He has told all of my friends that I need to eat more healthy. He s trying as well by eating more fruits and vegetables. Speaking of fruits, did you guess that I was talking about the fruits of the Holy Spirit last week? They are behind the statue of St. Jude between the confessionals of Fathers Lang and Pawel. The Bible says that when we walk in the sprit, we can bear much fruit. Based on Galatians 5:22-23, the fruits listed in this area include: charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity (kindness), goodness, long-suffering (generosity), mildness, faith, modesty, continency (self-control), and chastity. Many people meditate on these fruits as they wait in line for confession. It s like spiritual treats! You know, the weather has been nicer lately. I have been going outside more. One day, I was standing at the bottom of one of the tallest parts of the church. Did you know that we have statues on the outside of the building as well? I found several in this area. Where am I? Who is in this area? Please me your thoughts at rosie@shrinechurch.com.

5 March 21, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "What pleases Jesus," says the Saint of Lisieux, "is to see me love my littleness and poverty, the blind hope that I have in His mercy. This is my only treasure." - Letters "I shall love You, O Lord, and return thanks to You and exalt Your Name because You have pardoned so many of my guilty acts. If my sins have melted away like ice, it is the work of Your grace and mercy. All the evil that I have not committed was likewise the work of Your grace. Was there any sin that I could not have committed, I who have loved evil with so light a heart? I confess that all my sins have been forgiven, both those that I committed as well as those that, with Your help, I did not commit." - St. Augustine Open hours: Sunday, midnight, 2 pm; Monday, 1 am; Thursday, 10 am. noon; and Saturday, 5 pm. Partners are needed for the following hours: Sunday, 2, 5, 6 pm; Monday, 10 am; Wednesday, 4 pm; Thursday, 7 and 11 am and 2 pm; Friday, 4 pm; and the 1 pm hour on Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday; and the 7 pm hour on Sunday. Call Marie Lama at if you are interested in a Holy Hour or are interested in substituting from time to time. It's time to rally the troops for another chapel cleaning on Holy Saturday. We try to more thoroughly clean the chapel: woodwork, windows, pews, bookcases, relic cases, altar, tabernacle,...to make it beautiful for our Lord on Easter. If you can spare a little time to help, it would be greatly appreciated. Rags and cleaning supplies will be provided. We'll probably start around 10 am. Call Marie Lama at if you are able to help. God bless you and thank you in advance. Captains, please update your schedules in the back of the sign in binder. Write any deletions or additions right on those copies. Please have this completed by March 28 so that I can have clean and updated copies for you and the book by Easter. I would also like to update the sub list at this time. Anyone willing to make a few phone calls, please let me know at I think this is a task many would like completed so that information is more accurate and helpful. Life Matters Young pilgrims, Christ needs you to enlighten the world and to show it the "path to life" (Ps 16:1 1). The challenge is to make the Church's "yes" to life concrete and effective. The struggle will be long, and it needs each one of you. Place your intelligence, your talents, your enthusiasm, your compassion and your fortitude at the service of life!" "At this stage of history, the liberating message of the Gospel of Life has been put into your hands. And the mission of proclaiming it to the ends of the earth is now passing to your generation. Like the great Apostle Paul, you too must feel the full urgency of the task; "Woe to me if I do not evangelize" (Cor 9; 16). Woe to you if you do not succeed in defending life." "Have no fear. The outcome of the battle for life is already decided, even though the struggle goes on against great odds and with much suffering." "Do not be afraid to go out on the streets and into public places, like the first Apostles who preached Christ and the Good News of salvation in the squares of cities, towns and villages. This is no time to be ashamed of the Gospel (cf. Rom 1: 16). It is the time to preach it from the rooftops (cf Mt 10:27) (From John Paul II, World Youth Day, Denver, Colorado) 40 Days for Life is just this opportunity to be a witness to the importance of all human life. Consider sacrificing your time to pray to save the unborn. Sign up to pray for an hour in front of the Woman Care Abortion facility on Southfield Road for any day/hour that is convenient. The remaining National Shrine Day is March 23. For more information, see or contact Barb at Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Notice The National Shrine is in need of more people to participate in this ministry. The commitment is for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to serve at whatever mass they attend. No special schedule or planning needs to be made as a part of this important ministry. If interested, please attend the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Training Session to be held in the church on Saturday, March 27 at 10:30 am. We will meet in front of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel If you cannot attend this session, there will another training session held at the end of April. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Mass Coordinators There will be a special meeting for all Mass Coordinators on Saturday, March 27 at 10 am. Please make every effort to attend, as we need to discuss the steps of serving on the Altar during the Communion Service.

7 March 21, 2010 Page 7 Lending Library Carrying the Cross With Christ: Stations of the Cross For Every Day, by Rev. Joseph Sullivan "draws on Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and historical analysis to form each station." He recommends it for use in church, or "in lieu of having access to the stations--during the course of an ordinary busy day or when one is housebound or bedridden... Regardless of where it is used, this book allows the reader to journey with Christ as he carries his cross, both during Lent and throughout the entire year." (Back cover) (Section 2, Seasonal). Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). Congratulations to Amelia Plumhoff who won first place and Ryan Lopp who earned a second place award. We are very proud of all our fifth graders who met the challenge of learning and writing about vocations. All Around the Academy Musician Ted Nugent visited Academy students on March 8. The rocker talked to eighth grade Journalism students about his place in Detroit s musical past. Journalism students, along with outside media representatives, recorded the event, interviewed Nugent, and wrote articles about Nugent s appearance. As a follow-up to the learning experience, Fox 2 Detroit graciously agreed to return to the Academy to discuss how they covered the story. Academy students continued to learn about history via a field trip to the Holocaust Memorial Center, where docents conducted a tour of the facility. Upon returning to the Academy, students wrote reflections concerning their visit to the center. Congratulations to Academy students Delaney Benson and Abby Rosler for taking first and second places in the Optimist speeches competition. Academy boys will present their speeches March 17. High School Spring Musical - Curtains This year Shrine Catholic High School s Performing Arts Department is pleased to present CURTAINS, a musical murder mystery. Set at Boston s Colonial Theatre in 1959, CURTAINS begins with the opening night performance of a new musical. It could be a Broadway smash, were it not for the presence of its talent-free leading lady. When the leading lady mysteriously dies during her curtain call, Lt. Frank Cioffi arrives on the scene to conduct the investigation as the entire cast and crew are suspects. The lure of the theatre proves irresistible and after an unexpected romance blooms for the stage-struck detective, he finds himself just as drawn toward making the show a hit, as he is in solving the murder. Under the direction of Mrs. Diana Hochella, Mrs. Nancy Sawyer, Mrs. Laurie Bilkie-Snyder and Ms. Sara Skok, our cast, crew and orchestra have been working hard and hope that you will join us for a performance. Show dates are Thursday, March 25 at 7:30 pm, Friday, March 26 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, March 27 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, March 28 at 3 pm. Tickets are on sale! Call the High School office at to reserve your seats today! Host Families The International Program at Shrine Catholic High School & Academy is thriving. We are looking for host families from Shrine Catholic Parish or Schools to provide a loving home away from home for the school year. As a host family, you will be provided with a monthly stipend (approximately $700+ per month) to cover costs of providing your exchange student with meals, a bed, a place for their belongings and transportation. For more information, please contact Mrs. Jan Recinos at or recinos@shrineschools.com.
