1 Shrine Herald Royal Oak, MI June 16, 2013 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Principal Search I was informed by Mr. Cormac Lynn that he has made the decision to take the position of head master of St. Mary's Preparatory Orchard Lake and will not become the principal of Shrine Catholic High School and Academy. Mr. Lynn is currently the assistant head master and an alumnus of St. Mary s, and with the recent and abrupt resignation of the current head master, Mr. Lynn's loyalties and his lifelong dreams compelled him to take this position. We are a strong community. Setbacks such as this provide an opportunity to grow in our strength. We immediately reconvened the search committee and have begun to set interim structures in place for the ongoing operation of the school. I am confident that with God's help we will find the right person, strong in faith, adept in administration and loyal to Shrine. In it all, we are in the hands of the Holy Spirit. CSA Presently we are ahead of last year s returns and well on our way toward reaching the target set for us by the Archdiocese of Detroit. As soon as we reach the target, all funds over the target come back to the parish free of the usual Archdiocesan assessment of 7%. I urge you to send in your CSA card, with or without a pledge or gift. We need the cards returned to keep our parish records up to date. I returned my card with my annual pledge of $1, I encourage everyone who has not yet sent in their card to do so as soon as possible (ASAP). Father Espinoza Father Beto Espinoza has been reassigned and will begin his new assignment at Holy Family Parish in Novi on July 1. The Archbishop We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time has determined that it is time for Father s second assignment. A newly ordained priest usually serves in 2 different assignments before being eligible to become a pastor. Because of the need for Hispanic pastors, the Archbishop desires to move the process along. There is no truth to rumors that he is being sent away or somehow being disciplined. I can t believe people say such things and spread such falsehoods. continued on page 3...

"Adiós querido amigo" (goodbye dear friend) Sponsored by the Shrine Ladies Guild Film Invitation to October Baby On June 17, October Baby will be shown at Everest Academy (Clarkston, MI Clarkston Rd, Clarkston, MI ) at 7:00 pm. The doors will open at 6:30 pm. This will be a fund raiser for MAUBC. A free-will donation will be taken the night of the movie. If you have not seen October Baby, please come that evening. This is an incredible story about the power of love and forgiveness, based on the life of Gianna Gessen, who was burned alive by a saline abortion in the womb, and survived! To reserve your spot, please call me on my cell at and let me know that you are coming. The movie will be in the Girl s school gym. Important Notice Regarding Church Parking Lots Our church parkling lots will be receiving some long overdue maintenance in the form of seal coating and restriping. 3 June 16, 2013 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... We have been blessed with Father Beto s ministry here at Shrine, and we have enjoyed his sense of humor and even his corny jokes. He has accomplished great things with the Hispanic community and their numbers have increased dramatically. There is a large Hispanic community at Holy Family parish. Next Sunday there will be a reception for Father Beto after the 9:00 am Mass in Heritage Hall. Stop in and wish him well in his new assignment. Rosie, Carlito and Lord Stanley Rosie continues to improve. This last little spate of ill health has taken a lot out of her. With some pain meds and lots of tender loving care she is doing better. I think she has discovered that looking sad and weak gets attention. It is surprising how she acts when she thinks no one is looking or when she really wants something other than sympathy. Jesus had healed these women and, out of deep appreciation, they and others shared their gifts with Christ and the Twelve. As Christian stewards, we are challenged, in gratitude for God s untold blessings, to sacrifice a portion of our financial gifts to the parish weekly offertory, the Catholic Services Appeal, and other worthy causes. Likewise, God expects us to share our gifts of time and talent in service to Him. In response to these acts of charity, God s generosity is never outdone.

Thank you! Life Matters As we celebrate Father s Day, we should also honor St. Joseph. God chose St. Joseph to be the foster father of our Lord; to protect him and provide for his well-being. Like St. Joseph, all fathers are charged with protecting, guiding, teaching, and loving their children; this is both an awesome responsibility and a tremendous gift. In some countries, Father s Day is celebrated on St. Joseph s Day so it s fitting that as we honor our earthly fathers today, we also pray to St. Joseph asking for his guidance and for intercession from his Son. Let us also pray for the fathers who are victims of an abortion, that they may be healed from the pains of lost fatherhood. Rachel s Vineyard The post-abortive woman is internally divided by an emotional war within and against herself: on one side, her moral beliefs and maternal desires and on the other side, the abortion experience representing a choice to act against those feelings. Come find reconciliation at a Rachel s Vineyard retreat. Detroit Rachel s Vineyard Call to attend the next retreat September 6-8, Candle Cleaners Needed The Candle Cleaner Volunteers meet every Monday morning in the St. Thérèse Chapel after the 8:30 am Mass to clean the votive candle cups and column candles along with the votive stands. This group is in need of a few more volunteers to help with this very important ministry. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Barbara Cullen at or Barbara Schmidt at Evangelization: Evangelization Invites All into the Communion of Faith The message of evangelization is the One Truth found in Christ. We are called, as believers, to invite all to share in this one communion of faith. One of the central purposes of mission is to bring people together in hearing the Gospel, in fraternal communion, in prayer and in the Eucharist. To live in "fraternal communion" (koinonia) means to be "of one heart and soul" (Acts 4:32), establishing fellowship from every point of view: human, spiritual and material. Indeed, a true Christian community is also committed to distributing earthly goods, so that no one is in want, and all can receive such goods "as they need" (cf. Acts 2:45; 4:35). The first communities, made up of "glad and generous hearts" (Acts 2:46), were open and missionary: they enjoyed "favor with all the people" (Acts 2:47). Even before activity, mission means witness and a way of life that shines out to others. (Redemptoris Missio, 26)

They are excellent tools to help prepare you to be able to be part of the "New Evangelization" which the Popes have been encouraging everyone to do. You can listen to them in your car, while you are working around the house, before you go to bed, etc.. With so many good resources now available to the laity, you can grow more confident in talking about your Faith. Legionaries are under the guidance of a spiritual director named by the pastor. The Legion of Mary is, in essence, an extension of the heart and hands of the pastor. Members meet weekly for prayer, planning and discussion. Then members do two hours of definite work each week in pairs. 13 June 16, 2013 Page 13 Year of Faith In his fatherly care for all of us, God desired that all men should form one family and deal with each other in a spirit of brotherhood. All, in fact, are destined to the very same end, namely God himself, since they have been created in the likeness of God who made from one every nation of men who live on the face of the earth (Acts 17:26). Love of God and one s neighbor, then, is the first and greatest commandment. Scripture teaches us that love of God cannot be separated from love of one s neighbor: Any other commandment is summed up in this sentence: You shall love your neighbor as yourself therefore love is fulfilling the law (Romans 13:9-10). It goes without saying that this is a matter of utmost importance to men who are coming to rely more and more on each other and to the world which is becoming more unified every day. Gaudium et Spes 24 Question How do I let my love of God influence my dealings with the people I meet every day? Prayer God of love, help me to be a friend to all who need me.
