1 Shrine Herald September 19, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Off and Running Already mid-september and the School year is off and running. Shrine Catholic Schools and Religious Formation classes are all under way. Last Monday s Kick Off Session for the Catholic Culture series was a great way to start. The program will continue throughout the year and into the future. Poland and Beyond This Sunday, September 19, in the afternoon I will be leaving with Father Mąka, Father Siaosi, and 45 pilgrims for a pilgrimage to the holy places in Poland, Slovakia, Austria, and the Czech Republic. They will return on October 1. However, in order to be here for the Feast of Saint Thérèse, I will be returning on September 29. For me, it will be a quick 10 days with a lot to do. However, I am looking forward to a welcome change in the regular routine. I will keep all of you in my prayers as we visit various shrines. Father Mąka is very happy to be leading the group to Poland. He refers to his home country as The Other Holy Land. Friday, October 1, 7:30 pm Archbishop Vigneron His Excellency, Allen Vigneron, Archbishop of Detroit will preside at Solemn Vespers (Sung Evening Prayer) here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower on the Feast of Saint Thérèse the Little Flower, October 1, 2010, at 7:30 pm. Former pastors, associates, and weekend associates of the National Shrine have all been invited along with the priests of our South Oakland Vicariate. Many of the priests who have served at Shrine will be in attendance. Mark your date books, and be sure to join us that special evening in honor of our Patron s Feast. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Parish Mission Royal Oak, MI Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Most years we try to have a Parish Retreat, Mission, or Triduum (3 holy days) in conjunction with the celebration of the Feast of Saint Thérèse. This year our Mission will begin on Saturday, October 2, and conclude Wednesday, October 6. Our presenter is Father Ben Luedtke. He was ordained by Pope John Paul II. Fr. Luedtke is the spiritual director to several Carmelite monasteries. He personally knew Mother Theresa. He loves to reconcile souls with God in Confession a means of true healing and interior peace. His enthusiasm for the faith continued on page 3...

More details of the Mission can be found on page 13 in this Shrine Herald. Rosie, Carlito & Kodiak While I am in Europe, Kodi will go spend time with his trainer. Rosie will stay home and rule the rectory. Undoubtedly she will try to get as many people to feed her as possible. We have resorted to using a chart to keep her from getting too many meals in a day. Next Saturday, September 25, Rosie will be walking for St. Vincent de Paul Friends of the Poor with Sister Noreen. Please join me in supporting Team 1 in this years walk. Details are in the Herald. Maybe next year, Kodi and I can challenge Sister and Rosie. HERALD ARTICLE SUBMISSION NOTICE Your Herald Editor is taking a long overdue vacation in September. I will be out of the country from September 19 through October 1. All articles should have already been submitted through the October 3 edition of the Herald. Perhaps I think ' it is a small favor to have the grace to consecrate myself wholly, without reservation, to You who are the All.' 7 September 19, 2010 Page 7 Lending Library St. Padre Pio's feast day is September 23. He was truly an amazing man, who experienced many spiritual gifts (such as bilocation, prophecy, healing, reading hearts, the stigmata), and many serious trials (physical suffering, persecution, calumnies leading to a period when he was forbidden to say Mass in public or to hear confessions, attacks by the devil). These and many more aspects of his life are described in detail in the book, Padre Pio the Wonder Worker. Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). It is the foundation for the family, where children learn the values and virtues that will make good Christians as well as good citizens. The importance of marriage for children and for the up-bringing of the next generation highlights the importance of marriage for all society. This is an excerpt from the U.S. Bishops pastoral letter Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan. To read the document, visit the Web at loveandlife/. Word of Life Euthanasia or deliberately taking of the life of someone who is sick, dying, disabled or mentally ill is morally unacceptable. The Church calls for the ordinary care owed to a sick person, but medical procedures that are burdensome, dangerous or extraordinary are not necessary. If you are unsure about the moral implications of health care procedures that are being proposed for someone you love, contact your pastor or the archdiocese s Respect Life Apostolate. They will be happy to help you consider approaches that are in accordance with our Church s teaching about care for those who are sick or dying.

13 September 19, 2010 Page 13 Courage To Be Catholic National Shrine Parish Mission The National Shrine of the Little Flower is blessed to host a parish mission beginning October 2, with the 4:30 Mass and ending in the High School Wednesday, October 6. Father Ben Luedtke will lead the Mission. Ordained by Pope John Paul II in Rome, Fr. Luedtke has worked on three continents and presently serves Mother Teresa s Missionaries of Charity and is spiritual director to several Carmelite monasteries. He personally knew Mother Teresa of Calcutta and for a while was often her driver in Rome. Fr. Ben was Mother Teresa s special priest. He gives retreats and missions and is a popular speaker on fire for Christ especially in the Holy Eucharist. He loves to reconcile souls with God in Confession, a means of true healing and interior peace. Father s theme is Courage To Be Catholic, and he will reflect on the Eucharist, Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Papacy. His enthusiasm for faith and devotion to our Lord and Lady touches the minds and hearts of all who hear him. Father Luedtke will preach at all Masses on October 2 and 3. His mission reflections will begin in the church at 7 pm, Sunday, October 3 and continue at 7 pm on October 4 and 5. On Monday, October 4 at 4:30 pm, Fr. Ben will meet with the Religious Formation students. On Tuesday, October 5, he will meet with the homeschoolers. On Wednesday, October 6, at 6:30 am, he will meet with the Men s Bible Study group and the high school students later in the morning. This a wonderful opportunity to listen to an inspiring speaker and to learn more about our faith. See you there! Roamin with Rosie A big woof from Rosie. A lot happened this week. For some, it was the first full week of school. And for others, it was the beginning of sports. One big event was Monday night s Sharing Christ: Building the Body (90 Minutes That Could Change Your Life) Catholic Culture event. From what everyone said in the rectory, it was quite inspiring and exciting. They said that they can t wait for the parish mission starting October 3. Stay tuned for more information. Last week, I asked about a saint who was a tax collector, has a feast day this Thursday and is featured on the outside of the St. Therese Chapel. If you guessed St. Matthew, you were correct. His name is above one of the windows on the 12 Mile side of the chapel. Pictured are the money pouches to show he collected money. By the way, the saints above the chapel windows are the twelve apostles. There are six on each side. Okay, here s another saint. This saint has a feast day coming up, was known as the Little Flower and died on September 30, She wrote: My whole strength lies in prayer and sacrifice. These invincible weapons far more than words will turn hearts to God. Who is the Saint and where can these words be found in the church? Let me know at rosie@shrinechurch.com.

14 Page 14 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Knights of Columbus You ve probably heard about them at one time or another and you may have even seen them around town raising money for various charities, but how much do you really know about the Knights of Columbus? Unofficially, they re a bunch of good, decent and hard-working guys of all ages and from all walks of life who endeavor to conduct themselves like Godly men. They re men who have embraced their Catholic faith, and live their lives purposefully, and according to Church s teachings. Officially, they re the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization with 1.6 million members in the United States, and all over the world. The Knights provide their members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people, and they re still true to the following founding principles: Charity Our Catholic faith teaches us to Love thy neighbor as thyself. The Knights show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Special Olympics, and by supporting, both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies. Knights recognize that their mission, and their faith in God, compels them to action. Unity The Knights know that together they can accomplish far more together than they can individually. They therefore stick together & support one another. Each Knight can count on the support and encouragement of his brother Knights as they work to make life better in their parish and community. Fraternity Knights watch out for and take care of one another. The Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died often prematurely. The Order s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do individual Knights, who last year gave more than 10 million hours of their time to assist sick and/or disabled members and their families. Patriotism The Knights are patriotic citizens. They re proud of their devotion to God and country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether it s in public or private, the Knights remind the world that Catholics support their nations and are amongst the greatest citizens. The Knights are second to none in support of Our Holy Father, our Bishops and Priests; in working for their fellow man, especially those most in need; and in binding together to preserve traditional values in the face of attacks against the family and innocent human life. If you re interested in learning more about them, you re invited to attend the Knights next social meeting on Tuesday, September 28 th at 7:30 p.m. in the Shrine s Conference Center adjacent to the church. All current and prospective brother knights are invited to attend this informal evening of food, refreshments and fraternity. We hope to see you there! Vivat Jesus! Membership Director Sean McCarthy or Grand Knight Tadd Klimmek or kofc12408membership@gmail.com.
