1 Shrine Herald March 11, 2012 We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Third Sunday of Lent Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Third Sunday of Lent 2012 Except for the Masses where the Scrutinies of the Catechumens takes place, on this Sunday we hear the readings about the 10 Commandments and the Cleansing of the Temple. When we celebrate the Scrutinies, the Gospel of the woman at the well is read because of its Baptismal significance. So most of us this weekend hear about the cleansing of the temple. John places this event at the beginning of the ministry of Jesus in his Gospel. The other Gospels place it near the end of the ministry of Jesus. John places it near the beginning to set the tone of what Jesus has come to accomplish. He comes to reorientate mankind and all of creation to God. The very first commandment tells us of the importance of the place of God in our lives. He alone is God. He alone deserves our worship. Lent is a time of reorientation for each of us and for the Church. All too often we have set God aside in favor of our own will, our own comfort, our own earthly desires. Worse still, we simply ignore God or we are too busy for God. The world today seeks to have us believe that God is not relevant. In this sense, worldly concerns have taken priority over our relationship with God. Our temple is in need of a good cleaning and we need to orientate our efforts, time, and energy toward the more important reality of our relationship with God. The Prayer, Fasting, and Charity of Lent is intended to help us in this cleansing and reorientation of our lives. Even if we have only made a half hearted attempt thus far, there is still time to engage in the works of Lent. I encourage you to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation during this Lenten Season. Please check the Lenten schedule in the Shrine Herald or online for the schedule of regular confessions, the parish and the vicariate penance services Shrine Catholic Schools Auction Since I am out of town, I was unable to attend the auction this year. However, I have been told it was a huge success and that it was another wonderful, fun-filled evening for everyone! I am very happy to hear this since it is all about the kids and improving the future of Shrine Catholic Schools. I even heard that there was not one, but TWO adorable puppies that found good homes this year from continued on page 3...

Thank you to everyone who worked on the auction to make it such a great success and thank you to the Shrine community for coming out and showing your support for the future of Catholic education at our schools. Rosie & Carlito Carlito has been enjoying the extra attention he has been receiving from the associate priests while I am away. And I was told that while Rosie was a little sad after I left on my trip; she soon realized that it was Lent. Normally during Lent I will not let her eat a treat without dispensation first. In my absence, she soon discovered that the rest of the staff at Shrine does not hold her to the same strict standard! I have a feeling Rosie may need absolution upon my return. 5 March 11, 2012 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "In any form, liturgy includes some kind of 'institution'. It cannot spring from imagination, our own creativity-then it would remain just a cry in the dark or mere self-affirmation. Liturgy implies a real relationship with Another, who reveals Himself to us and gives our existence a new direction." "But we must not forget that there is an essential connection between the three orders of worship, law, and ethics. Law without a foundation in morality becomes injustice. When morality and law do not originate in a Godward perspective, they degrade man, because they rob him of his highest measure and his highest capacity, deprive him of any vision of the infinite and eternal. This seeming liberation subjects him to the dictatorship of the ruling majority, to shifting human standards, which inevitably end up doing him violence. When human affairs are so ordered that there is no recognition of God, there is a belittling of man. That is why, in the final analysis, worship and law cannot be completely separated from each other. God has a right to a response from man, to man himself, and where that right of God totally disappears, the order of law among men is dissolved, because there is no cornerstone to keep the whole structure together." - The Spirit of the Liturgy Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. Open Holy Hours: Sunday, 9 am; Wednesday, 4 pm; Thursday, 10, 11 am; Friday, 2 pm. The following Holy Hours have persons who desire partners with which to share their Holy Hours: Sunday, 10 am and 2, 3, 5 pm; Monday, 10 am; Tuesday, 9 am; Wednesday, 9 am and 3, 4 pm; Friday, 1 pm; and Saturday, 7 pm. Please note that the above list might have changed as of this writing. Please call Marie for the latest updated listing. Calls continue to be made to those who filled out commitment cards. Again, thanks for your patience. It's wonderful that there was such a good response!!! If you are subbing for a Holy Hour, please sign in BEFORE your Holy Hour. Persons have sat through two Holy Hours because they did not know the person there was subbing. Thanks to those donors of rosaries, religious items, and articles. I know that those things help feed our souls. May God bless you for your generosity! Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us! Life Matters Fr. Euteneuer, former President of Human Life International, published Pro-Life Do s and Don ts for 2009 in his January 23, 2009 Spirit and Life newsletter. One of the Do s listed was: Take back the culture: Even if the anti-lifers hold the reins of political power, we must not sit back and allow moral anarchists to define all the terms of the cultural or social agenda. Whether it is though social activism for life (crisis pregnancy centers, pickets and prayer marches) or through touching hearts and minds one soul at a time (persuasion, formation, teaching, media), we cannot be neutral about the direction our American culture is heading. It is leading us to a certain spiritual death and no one can afford that. We need to fight for it and never give up the battle. We have an opportunity to not only take back the culture but spread the our Catholic Culture by participating in the 40 Days for Life campaign from now through April 1 with a peaceful public witness outside the WomanCare abortion facility at Southfield Rd. (1/4 mile south of 12 Mile Rd). This place of killing and despair is in our own backyard. We desperately need your help to witness that only through reliance on Christ and the power of prayer can things change. Consider this there are 960 hours in 40 Days. Ideally, we would like 2 people per hour (that s 1920 hours for the full 40 days). Last Fall, while all 40 days 960 hours were filled, many of them only had one person praying. Only 1282 hours were actually filled. But more astonishing is that these 1282 hours were filled by only 155 people who signed up. Given the number of parishioners at the National Shrine, we can make a big difference. Attend the mid-point Eucharistic prayer vigil on Sunday, March 11 at 3:00 pm in front of the clinic. Join fellow parishioners during the designated National Shrine Day on Sunday, March 11 and Monday, March 19. Contact Laura Dysarz at or 40DaysSouthfieldHelp@gmail.com. You can also sign up for other hours at southfield or contact Barb at Note: Drop-ins are always welcome, but sign-ups are strongly Mass at Senior Centers WaltonWood Assisted Living 13 Mile Rd. near Woodward (next to Shrine Catholic Academy) Monday, March 12, 9:30 am American House Residence 1900 N. How do we live God's Will fully in the present moment? How do we come to a heroic trust in God? Considering Our Blessed Mother as our model and through the words of Scripture and holy women of the Church such as Chiara Lubich, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein), and St. Faustina Kowalska, we will grow in our understanding of what it means to live God's Will through all situations in our lives. Sponsored by the Archdiocese of Detroit, the retreat will be led by Mary Garlow and Judy Maten. Mass will be offered; lunch and all m a t e r i a l s a r e i n c l u d e d. Young Adults October Baby Friday, March 23, Time to be determined March 23 is opening night for October Baby which is a film hitting on the subject of abortion and those babies that actually survive the abortions. If the movie has a great turnout on opening weekend then the theaters will extend the viewings of the film. This is definitely a film that many will find controversial because of the subject, but it is a great eye opener into the many lives that one abortion can affect.

Grade School Happenings What s New in Spanish? Tomas and Rosco (Spanish puppets) have been attending the Kindergarten classes recently. They have been helping the students with their colors and greetings. Rosco is far more helpful than Tomas. The first graders are putting the finishing touches on their Libros de Mexico (books about Mexico). These books are filled with information about the language and culture of Mexico. Also, the first graders have been working hard on their numbers. Playing the number game is fun and it helps! Second graders have been focusing on eight different shapes and ten colors. Locating a certain shape in the classroom is challenging enough, but adding the requirement of locating combinations of shapes AND colors makes the task more difficult. Still, the students do a great job! Our third graders recently learned the Glory Be prayer. They now begin every Spanish class with this prayer. Their newest lesson is on the parts of the body. Singing Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes is a fun way to practice, as is the game, Simon Says. It is all about weather in the fourth grade. With our ever-changing weather this year, the students have had much practice using their vocabulary. They re also learning to pray the Hail Mary in Spanish. Soon, they ll know it from start to finish. The fifth graders have just completed memorizing the entire Our Father. This is no easy task! Now they begin each Spanish class with this prayer. They are also perfecting the art of telling time in Spanish. First, number drills were a must to ensure all were proficient in their knowledge of the numbers to 100. Finally our sixth graders are completing a crosscurricular assignment in Spanish and computer. They are creating people on the computer and then recording Spanish descriptions of these people. Their recordings include what Hispanic city and country their person is from along with family information and like and dislikes. They have been quite creative with this latest project! 13 March 11, 2012 Page 13 Faith Direct During Lent, we focus our daily activities on growing closer to Christ through an increase in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It is a wonderful goal to try and extend some of the changes we make in our lives beyond the liturgical season. Signing up with Faith Direct is a great way to focus on almsgiving throughout the year. It is a secure and convenient way to make a conscious decision about your financial support of our many wonderful ministries. You can find paper enrollment forms in the parish office, or you can sign up online at by using our church code, MI16. Sincerely yours in Christ, Reverend Monsignor William H. Easton

16 Page 16 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Shrine Girl Scout Troop Hosts 100th Birthday Party There have been Girl Scouts active in the Shrine community for 70 years, and the tradition continues. Girl Scouts turns 100 this year on March 12, and Shrine scouts threw a birthday party! Cadette Troop hosted 7 troops, from kindergarten Daisies to fifth-grade Juniors, for a morning of games, history, songs and a craft. Juliette Low came and did bandana tricks with all the girls. Blanche Smith, who has been a Girl Scout for more than 65 years and a leader at Shrine for 43 years, came dressed as Juliette Low and showed the girls the many uses a bandana has, just like Juliette Low did at her meetings. The Cadettes ran the party, teaching songs, games and Girl Scout history to the younger girls. The troops also ate s'mores around a make-shift campfire, like Girl Scouts do at camp. The Cadettes are in sixth grade and most have been in the troop since kindergarten. They demonstrated what Girl Scouts teach: they used Courage, Confidence and Character to make the community of Shrine a better place! The members of the troop are (in photo, left to right): Janet Dotson, Jamie McVean, Angela Bonello, Maggie Ewald, Olivia Schenkel, Madeline Overla, Rebecca Gonska, Kate Lilly, Cassie Morris, and Anne Marie Franklin. To the far right is Blanche Smith, dressed as Juliette Low. Their leaders are Marie Bonello, Mary Anne Franklin, Susan Lilly, Lisa Nelipovich and Colleen Overla. There has been controversy recently over the purported relationship between Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood, but those rumors are not true. GSSEM (local) has addressed concerns and put them on their website for anyone to read. You can read them at Knights of Columbus Are you interested in joining fellow like-minded Catholic gentleman in making a difference in our community? Then please consider learning more about the Knights of Columbus. The Knights of Columbus is the world s largest Catholic service organization, and we are based on the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. The Shrine Knights of Columbus Council will be conducting a special Tootsie Roll Drive at every Mass the weekend of March 10 and 11. All proceeds of this special Tootsie Roll Drive will go toward the funding of a new Catechism program coordinated by Deacon Avery for those children with special needs. Finally, the Shrine Knights will also be conducting a membership drive this same weekend. Membership information will be available in Heritage Hall for your review and Knights will be available to answer any questions. We hope to see you there and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Vivat Jesus! Tadd R. Klimmek Membership Director, Council The National Shrine of the Little Flower Church

That the whole world may recognize the contribution of women to the development of society. Missionary Intention: Persecuted Christians. That the Holy Spirit may grant perseverance to those who suffer discrimination, persecution, or death for the name of Christ, particularly in Asia. Vocations God gave us the commandments to lead us on the path to life (Exodus 20:1-17). What path will you choose to walk? Pray for wisdom to know God s path for you. Jesus teaches us to act from conviction and not from anger. He didn t condemn the merchants, only their business practice.
