1 Shrine Herald December 19, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton A Child Is Given To Us That night of Christmas 1886 Jesus, who saw fit to make Himself a child out of love for me, saw fit to have me transformed clothed me in His divine strength Letter of Saint Thérèse to Father Roulland. November 1, 1896 Saint Thérèse was so moved by the overwhelming love God manifested for us, that He took flesh and was born as a helpless infant needing our love, that she took the name Thérèse of the Child Jesus. Some feel this name is more correctly translated from French to English as Thérèse of the Infant Jesus. Our Holy Father, Benedict XVI, wrote God s sign is His humility. God s sign is that He makes himself small; He becomes a child; He lets us touch Him and He asks for our love. This is at the heart of the mystery of the Incarnation, the celebration of Christmas. The greatest Christmas gift we receive is God s love given to us in Jesus. The greatest gift we can give is love God and to love all our brothers and sisters. Christmas Masses The celebration of Christmas at the National Shrine of the Little Flower brings a great number of visitors and family members coming home to be with family. In past years, the 4 pm children s Mass on Christmas Eve, the Midnight Mass, and the later Masses on Christmas morning are packed. Please be courteous to everyone both in church and in the parking lots. In church, provide seating for the elderly. If you want to sit together as a family, please wait until everyone is present to find proper seating. It is not appropriate to block off We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Fourth Sunday of Advent sections or pews preventing people who came on time from having a seat. This is Holy Mass, not the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Outside church, please be courteous to other drivers and pedestrians. Do not park in the aisles of the parking lots. Do not park so that you are blocking neighbors from getting in and out of their driveways. Because some people are sensitive or allergic to incense, it will only be used at Midnight Mass and at 10:45 Christmas morning. continued on page 3...

5 December 19, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "O Jesus, eternal Word, permit me to penetrate more deeply into the sublime mystery of Your Incarnation, so that my heart may always be held captive by Your Infinite love." "Permit me to say, O Lord, that my mind and heart are bewildered before the abyss of Your charity! It is a mystery in which I lose myself without being able to see it to its depths. Give me, O Lord, the grace to believe firmly, unshakably in Your exceeding charity; grant that I, too, may say with complete conviction: 'I have known and I have believed in the charity of God for me!' The stronger my conviction, the more shall I trust wholly in Your charity, in Your infinite merciful love." - Divine Intimacy Open Holy Hours: Monday, 1, 4 am, 7 pm; Friday, 8 am; and Saturday, 3 pm. By taking on human form, God shows His immense love for every human person; he dignified humanity forever. This gift of life, the gift of God; must be protected and treasured at all its stages. God became man out of love for us. The infinite Creator of heaven and earth became one of us in order to live a human life and die a human death out of love for us. Over the centuries volumes have been written, asking why did God do this? He did not have to become man, even to redeem a sinful world. He became man out of sheer love for the human race. God chose not only to bring us out of nothing into human existence. He chose not only to live like us as a human being. He chose to become one of us, in order to live and die as a human being to teach us the most sublime lesson that the human race has ever been taught. Love was to become like us in all things but sin, in order to suffer and die like us and thus teach us what love really means. (The Priesthood, Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J.) Crisis Pregnancy? 8 Page 8 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings First Grade Merry Christmas from the first graders! We had so much fun performing in our Christmas play. It was a great opportunity to remind all of us about the true meaning of Christmas the birth of Christ. We recently created and culminated our science unit on animals with wonderful, unique projects which we shared with our sixth grade buddies. Dan the Creature Man came and taught us about many different insects, reptiles, and amphibians. It was so exciting to see and touch some of these creepie crawlies. As readers, we recently earned the privilege of taking out books at the school library. It is so exciting to be able to pick up a book and read it on our own! In math we continue to use many different kinds of manipulatives to have a hands-on experience with numbers and number sense. We love to use the SmartBoard and play various math games together. Our writing is cross curricular venturing into religion, science, and social studies. We have written several creative stories on Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, animals and community workers. Motor Moms and Dads have just begun. During the day we participate in various exercises which help enhance our fine and gross motor skills. From all of us we wish you a very blessed Christmas with your families and a wonderful New Year! First Graders, Mrs. Bilkie, Mrs. Carmichael, Mrs. Johnson Weeknights 5 to 9 pm; Weekends 9 am to 9 pm

National Shrine Career Network Are you an unemployed or underemployed National Shrine parishioner? Send a note to shrine_career_net@yahoo.com. We can help. Word of Life In many areas of public policy, the rift continues to widen between the moral principles expressed by a majority of Americans and the actions of government. For example, Americans oppose public funding of abortion by wide margins, with 67% opposing federal funding of abortion in health care in one recent poll. Yet in March of this year, Congress passed a health care reform law that allows for federal funding of abortion in some programs and could pressure millions of Americans to help subsidize other people s abortions through their health care premiums. Ensuring that health care reform will meet the urgent needs for which it has been proposed, and is not misused to promote abortion or to trample on rights of conscience, will be an urgent task in the coming year. ~Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston Houston and Chair of the USCCB Committee on Pro Life Activities, Statement for Respect life Month (2010)

15 December 19, 2010 Page 15 Cruisin with Carlito Yo! Happy Fourth Sunday of Advent my two legged friends! Rosie let me have this week s article as an early Christmas gift. We ve been getting along a little better since October when we started praying the prayers of St. Francis of Assisi. We ve really been working toward being loving to each other, and it seems to be working. If you have problems with your brothers or sisters, maybe you should pray St. Francis s prayer, too! It s hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner. Did you know that this Advent has been one of the longest that we can have? For some Advents, the fourth week of Advent will last only one day. But, this year, it will last almost a full week! The church is really starting to look like Christmas. Almost all of the Nativity figures are out, the trees are getting decorated and soon, special flowers called Poinsettias will be added... all of this to celebrate our Lord s Birth! Last week, Rosie asked about where I saw angels. I saw them on the lights! If you look closely at the tassel like things hanging from the big lights, you ll see what looks to be something in the shape of abstract angels. What s cool is that they are flying all around the church! Speaking of angels, what happens with an angel in today s Gospel story? Please let us know at: rosie@shrinechurch.com. You know, next Sunday will not be in Advent, but will be in the Christmas season. What is the Feast of the Sunday between Christmas and New Years called? Let us know at rosie@shrinechurch.com. Well, that s it for now. See you around the Church on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day! And don t forget to look up at the Angels!!! Christmas Flower Offerings Donation... 17 December 19, 2010 Page 17 NEWS How is the Roman Missal translated? The process of translation is a highly complex work requiring involvement by several groups. The International Commission on English in the Liturgy [ICEL] is chartered to prepare English translations of liturgical texts on behalf of the conferences of bishops of English speaking countries. Currently eleven conferences of bishops are full members of the Commission: the United States, Australia, Canada, England and Wales, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Scotland, and South Africa. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops [USCCB] and the other member conferences of bishops receive draft translations of each text from ICEL. These are called Green Books. The bishops then have the opportunity to offer comments and suggestions to ICEL. A second draft, called the Gray Book, is proposed, which each conference of bishops approves. A conference reserves the right to amend or modify a particular text. Then, the approved text is submitted to the Holy See for final approval. In Rome, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments examines texts and, sometimes after further exchanges, confers authoritative approval, called recognitio, of texts and grants permission for their use. Currently the Congregation is aided by the recommendations of Vox Clara, a special committee of bishops and consultants from English speaking countries convened to assist with the English translation of the Roman Missal. Volunteers needed to help SSVDP with tax preparation The Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Detroit is teaming up with other agencies locally to offer free tax preparation for low income families or individuals, and senior citizens. It will be offered in various locations around southeast Michigan. Many low income families qualify for special tax credits that could amount to hundreds of dollars, but aren t aware of them. By volunteering, you could make a difference. Volunteers would need to commit for twelve weeks, 1 2 days per week, beginning with a two week training program in January. For details on how to volunteer, please visit the Web at Adopt a Family for Christmas As Christmas draws near, many local families are struggling to meet direct financial needs such as food, prescription costs, rent, and utilities. Why not adopt one of these families for Christmas? To read about some of the families in need, visit our website, They represent every age and ethnic origin and reside in every county of the archdiocese. You can help them by participating in the Adopt a Family program sponsored by the Department of Parish Life and Services. Each family has been screened by sponsoring parishes and agencies, and is identified by a number to remain confidential. Donors may request their gift be given to a specific family or evenly split between all families. For more details, call Those wishing to donate to the Adopt a Family program should make checks payable to the Department of Parish Life & Services. Send your donation to the Department of Parish Life & Services, 305 Michigan Ave., 10th Floor, Detroit, MI Be sure to include your name and address if you would like to receive an acknowledgement for tax purposes. One may also donate on our website by credit card (Visa, MC, Discover, American Express). All funds collected will be distributed through the sponsor, not directly by the Archdiocese of Detroit.
