The Spanish Mass at 4 pm Sunday afternoon will have special prayers and commemorations for the deceased. Mass of Remembrance Monday, November 2, is All Souls Day. There will be a special Mass of Remembrance for all those who have died, especially those who have died in the past year. Everyone is welcome to attend. Mass begins at 7:30 pm. November During November we are called in a special way to remember our brothers and sisters who have gone to their rest. The Catechism of the Catholic Church makes the following statement about praying for those who have died. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. continued on page 3... For more information, contact Sister Noreen , ext Help the Archdiocese of Detroit Find its Patron Saint Catholics of all ages are invited to help select a patron saint for the Archdiocese of Detroit. It has long been a practice in the Church for certain entities, including dioceses, to seek the intercession and protection of a patron saint. The Archdiocese of Detroit, how-ever, has never officially had a patron. Archbishop Allen Vigneron is now asking the faithful of the Archdiocese for their help in selecting one. Between now and December 8, Catholics are invited to submit suggestions as to whom should be patron saint of the Archdiocese. School-aged children may enter the Finding Our Patron Saint essay and drawing contests. For more information, to submit your own suggestion online, or for details on the contest for students, please visit the Web at

3 November 1, 2009 Page Communion with the dead. "In full consciousness of this communion of the whole Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, the Church in its pilgrim members, from the very earliest days of the Christian religion, has honored with great respect the memory of the dead; and 'because it is a holy and a wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins' she offers her suffrages for them." [498] Our prayer for them is capable not only of helping them, but also of making their intercession for us effective. In November, it is recommended to pray for the dead, to visit the graves of the dead, and to share with the family our memories of those who have gone before us in faith. There is a special book of remembrance in the church in which to inscribe the names of those who have died. If you have put their names in the book in past years, there is no need to enter their names again. New Responsibilities When I returned from our Pilgrimage, I discovered that I had been elected to the new Presbyteral Council of the Archdiocese of Detroit and chosen by the Archbishop to serve as Vicar for the new Vicariate made up from the combination of the Birmingham, Bloomfield, Troy (BBT) Vicariate and the Southeast Oakland Vicariate. The new Vicariate is made up of 21 parishes in Oakland County. The Archbishop has restructured the former Presbyteral Council and the Council of Vicars into one body. The goal is to have four permanent regions of the Archdiocese, each headed by an Auxiliary Bishop or an Episcopal Vicar. It is also the goal to have four Vicariates in each of the regions. There are presently two too many Vicariates. With the combination of BBT and Southeast Oakland there still remains one too many Vicariates. The Presbyteral Council will consider a number of proposals for the realignment of Vicariates into four Regions. It is an honor to serve and yet it means a lot of work. Pray for me as I attempt to serve the Archdiocese in this new role while I still try to be a good shepherd and pastor to the National Shrine of the Little Flower. Rosie & Carlito I thought that Rosie was happy to see me after my two weeks on pilgrimage. Her tail would not stop wagging, and she did not want to let me out of her sight. She is so sweet. However, Carlito out did her in the welcome department. He did a dance with whoops of joy that I have never seen before. He put on a real display. Wish I would have had a video camera, it would have made a great video. 5 November 1, 2009 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Faith is not just a system of knowledge, things we are told; at the heart of it is a meeting with Jesus. This meeting with Jesus, among all those other meetings we have need of, is the truly decisive one." "It is in the great stories of discipleship, which extend across the centuries, that we first see unfolding what is hidden in the figure of Jesus. It is not the case, then, that a schematic pattern is imposed, but that every potential development of true human existence is contained therein. We see how Thérèse of Lisieux or Saint Don Bosco, how Edith Stein, the Apostle Paul, or Thomas Aquinas, have learned from Jesus how to go about being human. All these people have become truly like Jesus and they are nonetheless different and original but above all and in all is the One who comes to meet us and who gives us a hope that is stronger than all the devastation that men can bring to pass." - Pope Benedict XVI, Benedictus Open Hours: Sunday, 10 am, 2 pm and Saturday, 5 pm. Partners are needed for the following Holy Hours: Sunday, 10 am, 2 and 6 pm; Monday, 10 am and 4 pm; Wednesday, 4 pm; Thursday, 10 am and noon; Fridays, 11 am and 4 pm; and the 1 pm hour on Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday; and the 7 pm hour on Friday and Sunday. Call Marie Lama at if you are interested in a Holy Hour or are interested in substituting. Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us! Today and tomorrow we celebrate the lives of those who have gone before us. These are feasts that remind us of how connected we are; we never have been and we never will be isolated individuals. We are members of one family, members of the Communion of Saints. I am convinced, without a doubt, that I am in a life of ministry today because of the everyday saints in my life: my parents who prayed with us and with each other and gave so generously to their family, their parish and anyone in need; the Adrian Dominicans in ministry when I was in school; the numerous mentors and colleagues who have walked with me and with whom I have ministered, been challenged and grown. I know that when I minister, each of them is with me in some way, for God created us as connected. What a privilege! How are the everyday saints in your life calling you to serve? 7 November 1, 2009 Page 7 Lending Library All Saints Day begins the new month. How much do you know about your favorite saint? This is a great time t o g e t b e t t e r acquainted. Lots of books are available, either of individual saints, or collections that include a wide variety of people the Church saw suitable to canonize. All Souls Day follows on Monday, and reminds us of the importance of praying for the dead as they face the "purgation" process that may be necessary before they are ready for full union with God in heaven. Books are available to help us to pray for them, and also to encourage us, the living, to prepare for our own after life, from the old classic Divine Comedy by Dante (three books about heaven, hell and purgatory), to the modern novel, My Visit To Hell (Section 4). Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). 11 November 1, 2009 Page 11 Knights of Columbus Someone asked me just the other day, Why become a Knight of Columbus, what does it mean to you? This is certainly a question for the ages one that many Brother Knights are asked with fair regularity. The answer of course will differ with each response, however one thing remains constant; Charity, Unity Fraternity and Patriotism The four founding principals upon which the Order was founded. Just think what did being a Knight of Columbus mean to Vince Lombardi, Babe Ruth, or Floyd Patterson? These famous and upstanding Catholic men were all Brother Knights. This is why we encourage all Catholic men to join the Knights of Columbus; you must experience it for yourself! However, the benefits of joining our Order do not stop with you, these benefits extend to your spouse, families and fellow members of the faith. Therefore, please take this opportunity to think for yourself, while asking, What can I get out of being a Knight of Columbus? I encourage you to visit the official Knights of Columbus website or inquire of a Brother or Sir Knight of the council. If you are already a Knight of Columbus and wish that you could get more out of your experience, I encourage you to join us for our bi-weekly meeting every second and fourth Tuesday of the month in the National Shrine of the Little Flower Conference Center. Remember, an active council is the best council and an active council only thrives because of it s strong and plentiful membership. Therefore for all your membership questions and needs, please contact our Membership Director Sean McCarthy at or smccarthy@gmail.com. For current members interested in joining the Fourth Degree and the Color Corps, please inquire at our next council meeting. As always, for your insurance needs please contact our Field Agent Kevin Murphy at kevin.murphy@kofc.org We hope to see you at our next meeting. This child is our beloved and what they will be has not yet been revealed, but we know that we will devote our days to love, safety, and nurturing so that they may come to know God s love and allow His Spirit to guide their days and their lives. Through our parenting, grandparenting and godparenting, we pass on our faith and our relationship with God so that our children can bloom into what God calls them to be. 15 November 1, 2009 Page 15 Grade School Happenings Library The library has over 30 new books to add to the collection, thanks to the success of the Moms Club Scholastic Book Fair! This along with donations in both used and new books from generous family contributions has started us off to a great school year. It is always interesting to observe the kids, particularly in fourth through sixth grade, make their own personal book selections from the fair. I am happy and proud to share my observations with you. Not only did these young people take time to select just the right book ; they chose books of good quality and content. What a nice reflection of both their parents and teachers! Thank you to the hard working moms and dads who work with us and help instill these redeeming qualities in the children that mean so much to us all. A special thanks to Mrs. Mary Bolton, Mrs. Natalie Padilla and Mrs. Mary Jo Wisneski, for all of their hard work on this year s successful book fair. - Mrs. Dietrich Academy Update By Stefanie della Porta This has been an extremely busy week in the Academy. Mrs. Elaine Hewitt, who is teaching seventh grade English and honors while Mrs. Lisa LaChapelle is on maternity leave, has done a lot with her students. Mrs. Hewitt came at the beginning of this year and loves teaching the kids at Shrine Catholic. Recently, they have read The Princess Bride, worked on photo collages, studied the writing process, and made cards for the patients at Beaumont Hospital. Another great thing at the Academy is the random acts of kindness. For one week, the students did animus nice acts for each other and they liked it so much that they hope to continue it. The week of kind acts have inspired students to keep doing nice things just because it is a good thing to do. They have made it something special. In a short ceremony on October 28, new members were inducted into The National Junior Honor Society. NJHS officers were elected previously. Kristina Flowers 14 is president, Victoria Armeni 14 is vice president, Grace Nyikes 14 is secretary, and Michael Schienke 14 is treasurer. Congratulations to the officers and new members!
