1 Shrine Herald January 16, 2011 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Changing Lives Together As published in last week s Herald, we at the National Shrine of the Little Flower are one of the first group of parishes taking up Archbishop Vigneron s initiative Changing Lives Together. This initiative is aimed at making parishes stronger and thus making the archdiocese healthier. If parishes are strong then the archdiocese is strong. A major part of this initiative is getting people more involved in the life of the Church. A strong group of parish members have already volunteered their time and energy to ensure the success of the program. I am deeply indebted to them. Their commitment and energy is inspiring. If you are asked to participate in some phase of the initiative I ask you to prayerfully and generously respond. 2 Key Issues Changing Lives Together has nothing to do with the John Paul II Center in Washington, DC. That is an archdiocesan investment issue that is being dealt with through the sale of the assets. It does not affect the day to day operations of the archdiocese, and it has nothing at all to do with the National Shrine. Changing Lives Together is not a bail out of parishes that are indebted to the archdiocese. What we accomplish here at the National Shrine will not go to some other parish or school. Every parish of the archdiocese is required to participate in Changing Lives Together some time over the three years of the program. Those parishes in debt are required to put 75% of their revenue directly toward their indebtedness. It is good for the entire archdiocese and for our parish as well for all parishes to become stronger and responsibly deal with their indebtedness. It hurts us when they don t. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time No matter what people may say, I assure you that Changing Lives Together is not a bail out or a paying off of debts belonging to the archdiocese or others. At the request of the Archbishop, I have worked on the committees dealing with these issues and I know for a fact that Changing Lives Together is an all out effort to make our parish and all parishes stronger. We will directly benefit from the initiative. More in coming weeks. continued on page 3...

A Full Plate Changing Lives Together The New Translation of the Roman Missal Vicariate Together in Faith Archdiocesan Strategic Planning The regular day to day operations Christmas, Lent, Easter, First Communion, Weddings, Funerals, etc. I begin to wonder what else could possible fit on the plate. There isn t much room left, if any. The strategic planning of the Archdiocese in the second phase of Together in Faith is of vital importance for the future of the Church. It is envisioned that over the next year the Vicariate Pastoral Council will participate in creating a strategic plan for the Church in our area. This will become the major work of the Vicariate and sub groups of it. Stay tuned. Rosie, Carlito, and Kodiak I thought one escape artist was enough. Carlito still regularly finds ways to get out of his cage. Although it is not as often as before, he is still at it. Now, Kodiak is finding ways to get out of the dog run on the west end of the court yard. First he scaled the chain link fence. We replaced the fence. Then he learned how to open the gate. We found a way to secure it. Now he simply climbs over the gate. We are working on a solution. Some people think I am crazy for putting up with him, but it is a healthy diversion that actually helps to keep me somewhat sane. 5 January 16, 2011 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "This Heart, it beats for us in a small tabernacle. Where it remains mysteriously hidden In that still, white host. That is your royal throne on earth, O Lord... Full of love, you sink your gaze into mine." - St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross "And when He tells me through the mouth of the prophet that He stands more faithfully at my side than my father and my mother, yea that He is Love itself, then I begin to understand how 'rational' is my trust in the arm that carries me and how foolish is all my fear of falling prey to nothingnessunless I tear myself loose from this sheltering hold." - St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Open Holy Hours: Monday, 1 and 4 am; Wednesday, 10 am; Friday, 8 am; and Saturday, 3 pm. Partners are desired for the following Holy Hours: Sunday, 10 am, 2, 5, 6 pm; Monday, 1, 5, 10 am and 5, 6, 7 pm; Wednesday, 9 and 11 am and 4, 5, 11 pm; Thursday, 10, 11 am and 2, 8 pm; Friday, 4 am, 9 and 11 am; and the 1 pm hour on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. Make sure phone numbers are updated if needed. I will be pulling the sheets in the back of the sign in book on January 30 for revision/updating. You may indicate any changes right on the sheets in the back of the sign in book. Thanks for all you do to help our adoration of the Lord continue! You are a great blessing to the parish! Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us! Word of Life Once political leaders and health care experts decided to use government subsidized insurance as the vehicle, the means, for providing more universal health care, it was our moral obligation as teachers of the faith to judge whether the means pass moral muster, whether or not the proposed legislation uses public funds to kill those living in their mother s womb. Consistently, and ever more insistently since the sin and crime of abortion was legalized in the United States, our voice has been that of the bishops of the Catholic Church ever since the first Christians condemned the abortion practices of the ancient Romans. The act is immoral; and the laws that have permitted now fifty million children of our country to be killed in their mother s womb are also immoral and unjust; the laws are destroying our society. ~ Cardinal Francis George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago and outgoing President of the USCCB, Presidential Address, Nov. 15, 2010 Mass Intentions Monday, January 17 St. Anthony 6:30 am Intentions of Mr. and Mrs. John Baitos 8:30 am Leonard L. Life Matters Later this month, we will commemorate the 38 th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. Since that time over 50 million children have been killed and countless lives forever changed by the decision to have an abortion. Even though abortion has been legal for so long, I continue to find people who didn t know that abortion was legal for ANY reason through ALL nine months of pregnancy. This means that children are being aborted past the gestational age even when they are viable outside the womb. Nebraska just recently took action to limit that. On October 15, the landmark Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, passed by the Nebraska Legislature last April, took effect. The first of its kind in the United States, Nebraska's law prohibits abortion after 20 weeks gestation based on emerging scientific evidence that 20 week old children can feel pain. There are numerous studies which confirm the existence of fetal pain by 20 weeks. Dating back to 1987 the first studies demonstrated fetal pain, and today, much of the focus is on treating that pain. Just imagine the pain that must be experienced by an abortion. For more information, please visit South Oakland Vicariate What is God s Will for Me? On Friday, January 21 the South Oakland Vicariate Spiritual Formation Committee will be sponsoring the third presentation in the "What is God's Will for Me?" series. Our presenter, Deacon Joseph Hulway's topic is Letting the Scales Fall: Clearing Our Vision. The session will be in the National Shrine Conference Center at 7:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served. Please join us and bring a friend as we continue to learn God's plan for each of us. The National Shrine Brass Ensemble Christmas CD Now Available!!! As teenagers in the modern world we can sometimes feel like there is no way to become as holy as the saints seem to be. By taking a closer look at the lives of the saints we look to for intercessions we will find that we are not that different. Remember to bring $20 if you would like to purchase a C.R.E.W. sweatshirt and $10 if you would like a C.R.E.W. T -shirt. Also, do not forget to turn in your permission slip for bowling on January 30. 9 January 16, 2011 Page 9 Grade School Happenings It s a busy month at the Grade School. Last week we focused on Vocations Week and at the end of the month we celebrate Catholic Schools Week. Each class recently selected a pen pal at the seminary, and all students are praying daily for their seminarians, building spiritual bouquets to present on Valentine s Day. Our sixth graders spent last Friday at the Academy, learning the ins of what it is like to be a seventh grader. They came back so excited. I m sure they would move up there now if we d let them! Unfortunately for them, their principal wants them to stay put for a few more months, serving as leaders and role models for all of our younger students. We re receiving a number of phone calls about next year s enrollment, and we re beginning school tours for those who are interested. Please make a note, that our Open House for New Families will be Thursday, March 3 at 7 pm. NEW-Junior Kindergarten Next year we will be opening a Junior Kindergarten class. Junior Kindergarten is a bridge year between Preschool 4 and regular Kindergarten. It will be held Monday-Friday, from 12 Noon until 3:10 pm. It is for the children who are not ready developmentally for a more academic kindergarten, who needs more learning in the context of play, or who may have a late birthday. This program will give the child the gift of time which is so crucial to school success. Spread the word! National Shrine of the Little Flower Perpetual Mass Enrollment Cards The National Shrine of the Little Flower now has a beautiful six page perpetual Mass card available at the Parish rectory office and the National Shrine gift shop. With this enrollment, the person or persons, living or deceased, will be remembered in a Mass once a month at the National Shrine on or near the first Friday of each month. The Masses will be celebrated every month in perpetuity. The suggested offering for the enrollment card and a card suitable to be given to family or individuals is $25 per card. Donor Wall Directory Now Available in Heritage Hall In an effort to make it easier to find your family name on the Heritage Hall Donor Wall, an alphabetized directory is now available to assist you with your search. The directory is located at the base of the statue. All we ask is that you return the directory to the base of the statue so that all parishioners can use it to find their family names as well. Thank you! Volunteers needed to help SSVDP with tax preparation The Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Detroit is teaming up with other agencies locally to offer free tax preparation for low income families or individuals, and senior citizens. It will be offered in various locations around southeast Michigan. Many low income families qualify for special tax credits that could amount to hundreds of dollars, but aren t aware of them. By volunteering, you could make a difference. Volunteers would need to commit for twelve weeks, 1 2 days per week, beginning with a two week training program in January. For details on how to volunteer, please visit

10 Page 10 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Welcoming the new ROMAN MISSAL Third Edition The Creed On Sundays and solemnities the Creed is to be sung or said by the priest together with the people. The purpose of this prayer is to call to mind and confess the great mysteries of the faith before the mysteries are celebrated in the Eucharist. There will be some changes to the words used in the Nicene Creed. Permission has been granted to use the Apostles Creed, especially during Lent and Easter time. More importantly, we are reminded once again about the rubric that is to be included when the Creed is recited, namely, in the Nicene Creed, all bow at the words and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man, and in the Apostles Creed, all bow at the words who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born the Virgin Mary, By this simple gesture, we profess our belief in the Incarnation. This simple bow reminds us of what Paul taught: Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient, to the point of death even death on a cross" (Philippians 2: 5 8). Life is a Gift Coming in Advent 2011 "Man's life, Pope John Paul II wrote, comes from God; it is his gift, his image and imprint, a sharing in his breath of life. God therefore is the sole Lord of this life: man cannot do with it as he wills (The Gospel of Life, n. 39). We, the recipients of God s gift of life, are called to be good stewards of it in all of its facets. In giving life to man, John Paul II tells us, God demands that he love, respect and promote life. The gift thus becomes a commandment, and the commandment is itself a gift (The Gospel of Life, 52). In celebrating and respecting life, we are also called to support and protect the lives and dignity of others in our community, including the unborn, the dying, the poor, the hungry, the sick, the elderly, the immigrant, and those facing the death penalty. When it comes to celebrating life within the community, each must choose where to focus effort, but we must do so together, in unity, for we are all workers in the same vineyard of the Lord. The Archdiocese of Detroit invites you to join Archbishop Allen Vigneron in our first Life is a Gift Conference on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. Register online: at lifeisagift. If you have any questions, or to volunteer, please contact Socorro Truchan at CSA Minute Black Catholic Ministries The 2011 archdiocesan Mass honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held this Monday, January 17, at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. The Office for Black Catholic Ministries designed Joined Together in a Community of Love! to involve our schools and parish communities in an effort to build a community of love. In conjunction with the Mass, the office held a poster contest for first through fourth-graders and essay contests for fifth- through 12th-graders. The Black Catholic Ministries Office also commissioned a song from Keir Ward, a local composer and music minister at St. Leo Parish in Detroit. His composition, Together In Love, conveys Dr. King s message of being united not only hand-and-hand while we walk, but as a community truly united in love. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow our local Church to minister to African-American Catholics and predominantly African-American parishes through the Office for Black Catholic Ministries. The office s mission is to highlight, enhance and celebrate the contributions of the black Catholic community as it shares its gifts with the Church and society. For more information about the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mass, to download the sheet music or listen to an audio sample of Together in Love, or to learn about other CSA-funded programs and ministries, go to

Roamin with Rosie Thank you Kodi for writing the article for me last week. I was pretty wiped out from all the New Years Eve festivities! Just don t get any ideas thinking that Kodi s Korner might become a regular appearance in the Herald! I am rested and ready to write! Last week Kodi asked what season the Church is in right now. If you answered Ordinary Time then you are correct! Ordinary Time is the liturgical period outside of the distinctive liturgical seasons, and runs 33 or 34 weeks. Ordinary Time falls between Christmas and Lent, and between Easter and Advent, exclusive. The color for the season is green. You will be seeing the priests wear their green albs at the Masses. Kodi also reminded everyone about the Home series that began this past Thursday. Did you attend?? Kodi and I weren t able to make it over to the Conference Center to clean up the floor, but the word around the parish offices has been really positive about the program. Please, try to attend this Thursday and if you see me around; it s okay to drop some food for me! Parents, if you attend any of the conferences, please me at rosie@shrinechurch.com and tell me what you think. Last week in the Herald, Monsignor Easton continued to thank the wonderful musicians of the National Shrine and mentioned the Resurrection choir. Sometimes, when I am playing in the courtyard, I can hear music from the church. I love music! We are blessed at the National Shrine to have two organs. They are pipe organs and can be played together or separately. Does anyone one know who constructed the organs at the National Shrine? They were from St. Louis, Missouri. If you know, me at rosie@shrinechurch.com.
