1 The Communicator Immaculate Conception Council 11991, Goose Creek, SC Chartered May, Grand Knight Scott Balsitis VOLUME 19, ISSUE 02 August 2010 EDITOR: Kevin Carter Grand Knight s Message Brother Knights, One month down and eleven to go. Actually, I ve enjoyed the position so far. I want to thank our Directors for stepping up and filling the positions. We still need to fill the Council Director position if anyone wants to volunteer before I track you down and guilt you into the position. We have a very promising year ahead of us. There is no doubt we have the best Knights and best Council. Yes, we struggle with participation from time to time but we are no different than every other organization that exists. We accomplish great things each year through Operation HOPE, Pro-Life, Church fundraisers, Knights in Need, etc. We care in a world where fewer people care each day it seems. Stay focused and don t let the little things stop us. We brought in a new Knight, Tom Arnold, through a joint 1 st Degree held at the Hanahan Hall on the 29 th. Most of you already know him because he teaches CCD classes, he s involved with the YMP, and he is a member of the Church choir. Please welcome him when you see him as he is a good man and will be a great Knight. The Financial Secretary, Marty, the Deputy Grand Knight, Kevin, and I attended the Grand Knight s workshop on the 24 th. The State did a good job of presenting a lot of information. We had the opportunity to meet with other Council Officers and hear their good ideas as well. And we attended breakout sessions to learn about the many duties we are now responsible for. In the future I recommend we try to send more officers to this workshop so they also can learn from the material as well. I want to thank you all again for giving me this opportunity to serve our council. I would like to challenge each of you to set a goal to attend no fewer than six of the business meetings this year. If you have become inactive please consider becoming active again. We need your thoughts and inputs to make our council better. YIC, Scott Balsitis Grand Knight Deputy Grand Knight First, allow me to congratulate our newest member, Tom Arnold. I find myself wanting to echo our worth Grand Knight s report. The meeting in Columbia was both informative and enjoyable, and we all learned a great deal. I am excited that almost all the Director positions are filled and I add my voice to the Grand Knight s calling for someone to step up and fill the final slot. Please contact either of us for information or to volunteer. Vivat Jesus Kevin Carter, DGK From the Financial Secretary Brothers, please me at or call me at with your correct address, phone number's and addresses if possible. I would like to have accurate listing of both for our Officers and Directors. Nothing is more frustrating than a tool that doesn't work properly. YIC, Marty Kozakiewicz, FS

Of course, the main way the Knights help us to do this is through their insurance program. Everything about the Knights is about protection. And one of the other ways that the Knights help us to protect our money is through our annuities. The reason I use the word protect is that an annuity with the Knights is guaranteed to never earn less than 3%. There are no sales charges and no maintenance fees, so if you put in $300 or $300,000, your beginning balance will be whatever you gave to the Knights and it will always be worth more tomorrow than it is today. That is guaranteed! An annuity with the Knights can be started with a check, with a rollover from another annuity, or with a 401k. If it being rolled over from another tax qualified account, we can handle it so it will not generate a taxable event. Just like any annuity there are penalties for early withdrawal. But unlike most annuities the percentages and number of years is very small. You never have to annuitize the money, but you may do so if you want to. And as with

3 all Knights products there is no small print and no hidden fees. If you would like more details, please give me a call. By Brother Knights for Brother Knights. Steve Kramp, Your Knights of Columbus Field Agent (843) or Membership Brothers, we have started the new fraternal year with two individuals being interviewed. If all goes well they will take their 1st degree on July 29th. Please continue to keep up the good work. We need all the help we can get to provide good programs for all of our members. The Knights of Columbus Family Week is August This is a perfect time for those individuals who have family members who are not knights to bring them into the order (joining the Knights family). Recruiting a new member is not just getting member to join the knights, it is keeping him involved by setting the example and tutoring him during his first year and through the degrees. The interest that you show a new knight that your recruit him will pay many dividends to you and the council. It is in deed an example of what you will do for your family. Opportunities to recruit a new member exist every where including before and after mass. Additionally you can seek out individuals that come to coffee and donuts even if it is not Service Sunday. Think about seeking out someone you don't know and start a conversation with them and steer the conversation to find out if they are a knight and if not ask them to be one. It has been my experience with recruiting a new Knight is that long and meaningful friendships have developed for me and for my wife. Think about our Socials as an opportunity to demonstrate to a potential candidate what the Knights are about and how we are one big family. District Deputy Well my first full month as District Deputy is in the books and let me tell you the word busy won't even begin to properly describe to you how it was for me. Nevertheless i have enjoyed my first full month and look forward to many more months on the job. So far in one month's time or less that is, I've installed two council's officers, attended two meetings, one Grand Knight workshop, one district meeting, and on this coming Thursday, I'll be witnessing my first district wide first degree. I attended my first O & D meeting outside of my own councils last week and I've got to tell you it was very different yet very enjoyable and very interesting to see how other councils operate. The way the meeting was properly organized and everyone had a written out agenda just speaks volumes alone on the organizational skills of Worthy Grand Knight Scott Balsitis. You guys picked a good one when you elected Scott as Grand Knight and i have a lot of faith that he is going to do great things for the council this year and sincerely look forward to working with him. I'll be attending my first business meeting outside of my home council in August when i attend 11991's business meeting on the 5th and i honestly am looking forward to it. Again to get the opportunity to see how another council does things and how they operate is something I m truly looking forward to. Now on a business note. Although not full confirmed just yet, we are going to have a 2nd Degree on Sunday, August the 29th at Immaculate Conception at 2p.m. I'm still awaiting the final confirmation from the degree team, but from all indications, it s a go. Finally again I look forward to another great month of service to as well as the other councils in the district and I continue to look forward to working with all of you. Until then, Viva Jesus. Yours in Christ Brandon Chambers DD#13 God Bless Programs The speaker we have arranged for the 8/5/10 business meeting Is Alan Miles, a fellow Knight who is also the Flotilla Vice Commander 7th District USCG Auxiliary. He will provide a 5 to 10 minute presentation on the role the USCG Auxiliary plays here in SC.

4 Also, the menu for the August social will be Roasted Pork Loin with a Marsala Au jus, herb scented Jasmine Rice with Steamed Broccoli, salad and dessert. Vivat Jesus Jim Kell For the Good of the Order John Vohs Grass Cutting - As most of you know John Vohs needs help at this time to cut his grass until he recovers from some health issues. Council volunteers are cutting his grass every two weeks on Saturday mornings. Thanks to Daryl Bryant, Frank Strunk, Scott Balsitis, Russ Whited, Lenny Tittle, Mike Cousino, Chris Totolo and Mick Boone who have participated in the last two cuttings. It takes four people 30 minutes to cut his lawn and we start at 8:30am on a Saturday morning and we supply all the equipment. So if you want to help one Saturday please contact Howard Jackson. Thanks for all you do. Council Events Calendars Aug 05 Business Meeting Aug 19 Social Aug 26 O&D Meeting Sept 02 Business Meeting Sept 16 Social Sept 23 O&D Meeting
