1 Shrine Herald Royal Oak, MI August 18, 2013 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Communion for the Homebound 1. The Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion [154.] the only minister who can confect the Sacrament of the Eucharist in persona Christi is a validly ordained Priest. Hence the name minister of the Eucharist belongs properly to the Priest alone. Moreover, also by reason of their sacred Ordination, the ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are the Bishop, the Priest and the Deacon, to whom it belongs therefore to administer Holy Communion to the lay members of Christ s faithful during the celebration of Mass. In this way their ministerial office in the Church is fully and accurately brought to light, and the sign value of the Sacrament is made complete. [155.] In addition to the ordinary ministers there is the formally instituted acolyte, who by virtue of his institution is an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion even outside the celebration of Mass. If, moreover, reasons of real necessity prompt it, another lay member of Christ s faithful may also be delegated by the diocesan Bishop, in accordance with the norm of law, for one occasion or for a specified time, and an appropriate formula of blessing may be used for the occasion. [156.] This function is to be understood strictly according to the name by which it is known, that is to say, that of extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, and not special minister of Holy Communion nor extraordinary minister of the Eucharist nor special minister of the Eucharist, by which names the meaning of this function is unnecessarily and improperly broadened. [157.] If there is usually present a sufficient number of sacred ministers for the distribution of Holy Communion, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion may not be appointed. Indeed, in such circumstances, those who may have already been appointed to this ministry should not exercise it. The practice of those Priests is reprobated who, even though present at the celebration, abstain from distributing Communion and hand this function over to laypersons. [158.] Indeed, the extraordinary minister of Holy Communion may administer Communion only when the Priest and Deacon are lacking, when the Priest is prevented by weakness or advanced age or some other genuine reason, or when the number of faithful coming to Communion is so great that the very celebration of Mass would be unduly prolonged. continued on page 3...

Mary s Children family center is in need of a caring nurse to lead the day program. We care for young, energetic adult students with serious brain injuries attending daily sessions. Please consider the option and call for more information, or visit our website at: We also could use volunteer help in reading, singing or crafts. Age is no problem and the program will make you feel GREAT! Mary s Children Family Center of Michigan 495 E 14 Mile Rd Clawson, MI Operation Backpack Sister Peggy of the Chaplaincy Program for Jail Ministry is asking for our help. Backpacks and School Supplies are needed for the children of parents who are in the Oakland Jail and for children who are experiencing family abuse. These children deserve a fresh start for a new school year, and as always, National Shrine parishioners will be generous. If anyone prefers to make a monetary contribution, C/O Sr. Peggy for Jail Ministry, that would be welcome, as well. Please bring new backpacks and supplies to the Parish Office in Heritage Hall by August 26. Do pray for those who will receive your gifts when you are praying for your own family. God bless each of you and all teachers and students during a new year of learning and growing in God s ways. - Sister Noreen

3 August 18, 2013 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings Communion for the Homebound [131.] Apart from the prescriptions of canon 934 1, it is forbidden to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in a place that is not subject in a secure way to the authority of the diocesan Bishop, or where there is a danger of profanation. Where such is the case, the diocesan Bishop should immediately revoke any permission for reservation of the Eucharist that may already have been granted. [132.] No one may carry the Most Holy Eucharist to his or her home, or to any other place contrary to the norm of law. It should also be borne in mind that removing or retaining the consecrated species for a sacrilegious purpose or casting them away are graviora delicta, the absolution of which is reserved to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. [133.] A Priest or Deacon, or an extraordinary minister who takes the Most Holy Eucharist when an ordained minister is absent or impeded in order to administer it as Communion for a sick person, should go insofar as possible directly from the place where the Sacrament is reserved to the sick person s home, leaving aside any profane business so that any danger of profanation may be avoided and the greatest reverence for the Body of Christ may be ensured. Furthermore the Rite for the administration of Communion to the sick, as prescribed in the Roman Ritual, is always to be used. What this means in practice Other than a priest or deacon, only those who are appointed as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion may take communion to the sick. The extraordinary minister of Holy Communion should receive the sacred consecrated host at the tabernacle not in the communion line. Upon receiving the Eucharist in a proper pix, the extraordinary minister of Holy Communion should go directly to the sick person or persons who are to receive, not even staying for the end of Mass or taking time to visit with fellow parishioners or heaven forbid, go to breakfast of some other activity. The Rite for the administration of Communion to the sick should always used. Rosie, Carlito & Lord Stanley All 3 were happy to have me home again after a few weeks. Lord Stanley (Stachu) was a little rusty on his Water Rescue Training and we have begun heavy duty sessions to get ready for his exam in September. We will keep you posted on this progress. 5 August 18, 2013 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Christ did not give us a church to move with the world, but a Church which will move the world." "Wandering through the many snares of life, Satan, with all his cunning, never ceases to seek to enslave the human appetites, imagination, and senses, so that one becomes more interested in self-gratification than in what our God-given conscience dictates. Indeed, we live in the times that St. Paul warned about: 'For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but, following their own desires, they will surround themselves with teachers who tickle their ears. They will stop listening to the truth and will wander off to fables.' In the Sunday edition of April 13-15, 1990, the Detroit News enclosed a special section on religion offering five pages that began with the caption:'gimme that New-Time Religion." The front page carried a picture of Pastor Bill Hybels who heads the Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Illinois, and offers "a slick, show-biz service where drama and soft rock are served up on a stage washed in pink and blue spotlights. A softsell sermon is delivered by Hybels...It's been put down as pop Gospel, fast food theology, McChurch...where you won't be bored...drama, humor, pop music...complete with 12 big screen TVs showing close-up action on stage, just like the rock concerts. " The article goes on to say that 'to attract churchgoers today, you've got to please the customer. That means high-tech entertainment by professionals: actors, singers, etc. St. Vincent of Lerins maintained that all novelty in faith is a certain mark of heresy; and in religion nothing is more to be dreaded than ears itching after new teachers. He said: "They who have made bold with one article of faith will proceed on to others; and what will be the consequence of this religion but only that these refiners will never have done enough until they have reformed it away." He added that heretics are like those poisoners or quacks who mask their destructive potions under the names of good drugs and infallible cures. They imitate the father of lies, who quoted scripture against the Son of God when he tempted Him. - Hidden Treasure: The Riches of the Eucharist by Louis Kaczmarek Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. Open Holy Hours: Wednesday, 6 pm; Friday, 11 am and Noon. Please leave donations of religious items marked in a bag underneath the sign-in sheets in the cupboard. Please do not just add them to the freebie/evangelization basket. I like to "ration them out" so to maintain a neat environment in the chapel vestibule. On that same note, items put on the bulletin board need to be cleared through Marie Lama at With so many events going on, the bulletin board can very quickly become a jumble of notices about those events. Thank you to all who have followed these guidelines. God bless all for your generosity!!! Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us!!! Pope Paul VI noted in his Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity that: "There are innumerable opportunities open to the laity for the exercise of their apostolate of evangelization and sanctification. The very testimony of their Christian life and good works done in a supernatural spirit have the power to draw men to belief and to God. However, an apostolate of this kind does not consist only in the witness of one's way of life; a true apostle looks for opportunities to announce Christ by words addressed either to non-believers with a view to leading them to faith, or to the faithful with a view to instructing, strengthening, and encouraging them to a more fervent life. Since, in our own times, new problems are arising and very serious errors are circulating which tend to undermine the foundations of religion, the moral order, and human society itself, this sacred synod earnestly exhorts laymen-each according to his own gifts of intelligence and learning-to be more diligent in doing what they can to explain, defend, and properly apply Christian principles to the problems of our era in accordance with the mind of the Church." (Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity, 6)

7 August 18, 2013 Page 7 Lending Library If you came to the parish mission you know how dynamic Fr. Larry Richards is. In his book, Be A Man, he "talks straight to men in his own manly style. He pulls no spiritual punches.... He pokes, pushes and sometimes verbally slaps men into being God's men, all with an obvious love for them and faith in their ability to persevere to heaven.... He inspires men to become the heroes they long to be-- men of authenticity, courage, compassion and integrity." (from review by Dr. Ray Guarendi, back cover). Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). 10 Page 10 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings It s almost time to open the doors and welcome our kids back! Teachers have been in and out setting up their classrooms, and this week they will be busy with Professional Development and Curriculum Committee meetings among other things. On Tuesday, teachers and staff from both schools gather together to celebrate Mass the true beginning of our school year. Thursday the Grade School staff will participate in a retreat at Manresa. We are back on schedule. We welcome a number of new families to Shrine this year and we are excited for them to join our family. Wednesday evening, August 21, at 7:00 pm our Mothers Club is hosting a social for our new families. School begins Monday, August 26. Upcoming Dates August 26- School Begins Half Day Noon Dismissal August 27- Half Day Noon Dismissal August 28 and 29 Full Days August 30 and September 2 No School- Labor Day Weekend D. T. P. S. We read today that following Christ is like running a race. Any of us that have ever been in a serious competition knows that it takes a lot of focus to prepare for something important like a race. Whether a footrace, car race, bike race or pinewood derby race, its take time, effort, drive and intensity in order to even be able to compete seriously. How easy is it to be distracted, to get caught off guard, to be pushed off of our focus? In the same way Christ knows that following him is difficult. It means enduring terrible conflicts and division like the gospel says. It means enduring persecution like Jeremiah did in the first reading being thrown into a well for being faithful to God. Each day we must make an effort to continue in this race despite the conflict and persecution we may be facing that tries to keep us out of the race. Some of us may even need a fresh start in the race after being bogged down in the muck and mire of life. This race doesn t need the fanciest shoes or the best clothes, it needs your time. Have I said this before? Take time to pray and listen this week because I don t know where you need to begin but Jesus does. - Deacon Tom Avery

Every gift makes a difference. Every prayer helps, too. Join us with a gift and in prayer. Loving and Generous Father, We praise you and humbly give you thanks for the gifts of our faith and your abundant grace. We thank you for the gift of your Son Jesus, who brought us the Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith and the nourishment for our life s journey. We ask you to open our hearts and minds to understand your presence in those we encounter in need, so they may see your love through our compassionate care of them. Bless in a special way the dedicated clergy, religious, and laity who minister to the spiritual and temporal needs of the faithful in the Archdiocese of Detroit and beyond. Bless our own commitment to the faithful stewardship of your gifts of our time, talents, and treasure in support of those good works in our parishes and the Archdiocese as we strive to share Christ in and through the Church. This we pray through your Son, Jesus, who lives with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen Name: Street Address: City: State: Zip:

13 August 18, 2013 Page 13 Vocations Convocation: Pray for Vocations! Blessed Monstrance for Vocations coming to the Archdiocese of Detroit On Saturday, September 14, the Office of Priestly Vocations will host a morning of prayer for vocations at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. A special monstrance, blessed by the late Pope John Paul II will be at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral with adoration from 10:00 am until closing Benediction at 12:00 pm. All the faithful of Detroit are invited to come and pray for vocations during that time. Pope John Paul II will be canonized a saint of the Roman Catholic Church this year. In 2004 he blessed six monstrances to travel the world to encourage prayer for vocations. Our diocese needs good and holy men and women to consider the priesthood and religious life. Come to the Cathedral to pray! A seminar for New Vocation Committee Members will also be held at the Cathedral on September 14, 2013 from 12:00-1:00 pm. If your parish would like to form a Parish Vocation Committee register online to attend! For more information visit our website: Follow us on Facebook: Office of Priestly Vocations or Vocations, one of the seven mission priorities for the Archdiocese of Detroit! Youth Ministry New youth ministers, as well as those interested in receiving more information about youth ministry resources, will gather at a Youth Ministry Orientation at Sacred Heart Major Seminary next Saturday, August 24. The orientation, funded in part by gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal, will provide an overview of the resources available through the Archdiocese of Detroit, tips for starting a youth ministry program, essential youth ministry documents, and suggested materials for a successful parish youth ministry program. Youth ministry in the Archdiocese of Detroit is coordinated through the Department of Evangelization, Catechesis, and Schools, along with young adult and campus ministries. For more information about youth ministry, or other CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to
