1 Shrine Herald Royal Oak, MI July 7, 2013 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Dream Cruise Your chances of getting struck by lightning are better than your chances of winning any state run lotto. Your chances of winning one of the prizes in the Shrine Dream Cruise Raffle are drastically better than either lightning or lotto. When you add the 50/50 Bonus Raffle, it only makes sense that if you are going to take a chance you are considerably better off taking a chance on the Dream Cruise Raffle than any of the other possibilities. Details can be found in this edition of the Shrine Herald. Get your tickets today. Good luck to all. Lourdes and Lisieux There are still a few spots available for the Pilgrimage to France in October. My name is Fr. Patrick Gonyeau and I am both excited and grateful to have recently joined your parish as an associate pastor. I would like to thank Msgr. Easton, the entire staff, and the whole parish community as well for already welcoming me so very warmly. I sincerely look forward to walking with this community on the Church s collective journey through this world and towards Jesus promise of eternal life in the kingdom of heaven for those who love Him by remaining in Him and keeping His commandments (Jn 14:20). You will all be in prayers continually and I look forward to helping this community in anyway that Msgr. Easton sees best. As your Pastor, he really is given the sacred charge of caring for your souls, and I in turn take very seriously my responsibility to be a co-shepherd of sorts, assisting your chief shepherd. I m here for you and praying for you, and in advance, I want to thank you for your prayers for me as well! I suppose it would also be good to give just a bit about my background. I am 34 and the fifth of eight children born to Tom and Patty Gonyeau on the east side of Detroit. I graduated from Harper Woods high school in 1997 and Michigan State University in 2001 (Advertising degree with a certification in Public Relations). After college I sought to parlay my love of folk music (singer/songwriter) into a career and waited tables while trying to do so for several years. From the ages of I lived a very secular life until the good Lord opened my eyes and showed me that my heart was empty without Him, that He loved me, and that He was inviting me to share my life with Him and share in His divine and amazing life as well. I was essentially blessed with a wonderful conversion in my mid-twenties that I attribute to the great intercessory prayer of so many who loved me, namely, my Mother who does a pretty darn good St. Monica impersonation I think! In His great love and mercy, God added to His kindness in my life by offering me the gift of the priesthood, a gift of inestimable worth. I can t be grateful enough for what He s done in my life and what He s given me. I rejoice to know that the gift of His love in our lives is meant to spring up into a fountain that nourishes others too! (Jn 7:38) With a grateful heart, I am thrilled to join your parish and will seek to be a ready, willing and humble servant who shares God s love, joy, peace, mercy, forgiveness and precious body & blood with all of you. Thank you again for your warm welcome, may God bless you abundantly! - Fr. Patrick Important Herald Article Submission Notice The Shrine Herald Editor will be on vacation the week of July In order to complete the July 21 bulletin before vacation, please submit your July 21 articles by Wednesday, July 10. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Vicki Holtyn Shrine Herald Editor

3 July 7, 2013 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Father Patrick Gonyeau He has survived his first week at Shrine and is an inspiration to all. Water Rescue Training Lord Stanley (Stachu) is into heavy duty training to become a Water Rescue Dog. He has pretty much mastered retrieving objects from the water and has a powerful swimming stroke. He is learning how to distinguish which objects need retrieving and how to take a line to people in trouble or to disabled water craft. He should be ready to be tested on stage 1 by the Fall testing date. Rosie, Carlito & Lord Stanley Rosie is feeling much better and is appreciative of all the concern and well wishes expressed. Carlito is grateful to the Lynch family for all the attention and being able to enjoy his outdoor aviary. Stachu wants all dog owners to be on the lookout for ticks. He had one and they are no fun. Ticks are bad this year. This requires a deep relationship with Christ must be in place prior to the moving forth to do the work of evangelization. This relationship is rooted in prayer, fed on the Eucharist and the sacramental life of the Church, and celebrated in worship with our brothers and sisters in faith. 5 July 7, 2013 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Dependence on Him becomes strength; one no longer fears to undertake good works, knowing He will supply the means. But above all else, with this deep sense of peace, there is the gift of perseverance, which inspires us never to let down our guard, or to shrink from difficulties, or to be depressed as the soul presses on to its supernal vocation in Christ Jesus, Our Lord." "A final effect of complete conversion is less pleasant: one becomes the target of opposition and hate....as soon as anyone joins the Church, hatred, opposition appear. This is because his friends intuitively know that he no longer shares the spirit of the world, that he is now governed by Spirit, is lifted into a truly supernatural order, is united with Divinity in a special way, which is a challenge and reproach to those who would make the best of two worlds....forget, for a moment, that the Church exists; and suppose that there should suddenly appear on earth an institution equally Divine, which claimed to teach Truth as unerringly as God teaches it; which summoned children every morning to schools where they would begin and end their lessons with prayer; which forbade its married members to dishonor their marriage ties; which taught purity in a carnal environment; which, in all its decisions on society, on the rights of men, on politics and economics started with the principle that nothing REALLY matters except the salvation of a soul. How would the world receive it? With defiance, hatred, vilification, persecution, and unremitting attacks. Whenever the Voice is heard, the Presence felt, there is such violent opposition as has been promised: 'But because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.'. 7 July 7, 2013 Page 7 Lending Library In these days of short attention spans, the two volumes of Saints For Young Readers compiled by the Daughters of St. Paul could be an ideal way to introduce young people to a wide variety of saints. There is one for every day of the year, and each is highlighted on one or two pages, just enough to peak curiosity either to learn more about them, or to flip through the book to see who else sounds interesting. The stories are easy to read and understand, inspiring, informative, enjoyable. Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). 15 July 7, 2013 Page 15 Year of Faith Hence the laity, dedicated as they are to Christ and anointed by the Holy Spirit, are marvelously called and prepared so that even richer fruits of the Spirit may be produced in them. For all their works, prayers and apostolic undertakings, family and married life, daily work, relaxation of mind and body, if they are accomplished in the Spirit-indeed even the hardships of life if patiently borne-all these become spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. In the celebration of the Eucharist these may most fittingly be offered to the Father along with the body of the Lord. And so, worshiping everywhere by their holy actions, the laity consecrate the world itself to God. Lumen Gentium #34 Question Do I pray daily for the Holy Spirit to be with me in my undertakings? Prayer O Holy Spirit, help me to appreciate the power of your presence when we gather as family, as Church and as community. Give me the sensitivity to your gifts wherever they are manifest. Help me to walk in your shadow which only becomes clear in the light of Jesus, the Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Father for ever and ever. Amen. National Shrine of the Little Flower Perpetual Mass Enrollment Cards The National Shrine of the Little Flower now has a beautiful six page perpetual Mass card available at the Parish rectory office and the National Shrine gift shop.
