1 Shrine Herald Royal Oak, MI February 16, 2014 We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time New Pastor The National Shrine of The Little Flower is pleased to announce that the Archdiocese of Detroit has assigned Father Robert Fisher of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Utica, MI to become the new pastor of the National Shrine. Father Fisher s assignment comes after the unexpected death of Monsignor William Easton on December 29, "I am very grateful that Father Fisher has agreed to being sent to serve as the pastor of the National Shrine of the Little Flower," said Archbishop Vigneron. "He has proven himself to be a zealous and loving priest. I am confident that The Lord Jesus will work powerfully through him in this new and challenging assignment." Father Fisher has been a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit for 22 years. He also has served as pastor of St. Angela Parish in Roseville ( ); director of priestly vocations for the Archdiocese of Detroit ( ); and associate pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in Grosse Pointe Woods ( ). Father Fisher s Biographical Timeline June 27, 1992 Ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Detroit Associate Pastor at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, Grosse Pointe Woods Director of Priestly Vocations for the Archdiocese of Detroit Pastor of St. Angela Parish in Roseville 2003-present Pastor of St. Lawrence Parish, Utica March 22, 2014 Pastor of National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish, Royal Oak Fr. Bob will begin his assignment at the National Shrine of the Little Flower on March 22, Please join us in welcoming him to our National Shrine of the Little Flower family. Meditation for Sunday, February 16 What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard - 1 Corinthians 2:9 The cross of Christ was the last thing anyone expected. The Messiah was supposed to come in triumph and reign in peace, wasn t he? So when God decided to save humanity through a rejected and crucified rabbi, it didn t make sense. Our human minds, though equipped with many fine faculties, cannot know the mind of God on our own. continued on page 3...

We have received over $1000 in monetary donations and lots of socks, underwear, toiletries, juice and cereal. It is expensive in time and resources to serve and protect our guests. Money gifts are used to purchase paper supplies, tableware, condiments, etc. as well as to pay for laundering and packaging of the 400 or so blankets that are used during our weeks. Thank you to all the teams that have volunteered to prepare and serve meals, as well as those who do the inside and outdoors jobs of service. I know I am not alone in thanking God, on those long, cold nights, for the bed and comfy covers I enjoy every night at home. Let s pray for one another that we may serve well and generously. This is gospel work! - Sister Noreen Ellison Save a Baby's Life The National Shrine Ladies Guild invites you to spiritually adopt a baby as an added spiritual gift in preparation for our yearly baby shower. Say this prayer every day for nine months to save a baby's life. JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH, I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH. I BEG YOU TO SPARE THE LIFE OF THE UNBORN BABY THAT I HAVE SPIRITUALLY ADOPTED WHO IS IN DANGER OF ABORTION. (Name your baby) Please pray. This baby is counting on you. Cut this out and put it somewhere where you will see it daily. Each month we will report on the progress of your baby. After nine months the Ladies Guild will sponsor a baby shower. The gifts you bring will be for "your baby". Watch me grow! Day 1 - "I'M HERE!". At the moment the nuclei of the father's sperm and mother's egg unite, a new human being comes into the world. In just a few days the tiny human will snuggle into the soft lining of its mother's womb where it will be nurtured for nine months. All that's needed is time, nourishment, and most of all: love. During this amazing month of life the baby grows to 10,000 times his size at conception. He is totally dependent on his mother. By the third week the baby's tiny heart begins to beat.

3 February 16, 2014 Page 3 continued from page 1... At Calvary something new began, God revealed his wisdom in a way he had not done before. He showed us that the greatest gift is to give of oneself in the sacrificial love and he lead the way on the cross. He revealed that his will is accomplished in ways that don t always seem logical to us. Jesus death scandalized the religious leaders who were awaiting a more conventional hero. And the wise men of the time thought that victory through defeat was a foolish concept. But for those who believed, the wisdom of the cross became the heart of a life of faith and trust. Even today, God wants the paradox of the cross to become the center of our lives. We know that everyone is capable of discerning right from wrong. But to peer into the mind of God and understand his thoughts this can come only through the Spirit. Only the Spirit can teach us the logic of divine love, a logic based on selfgiving and not self-preservation. Today, try to look at your circumstances through the eyes of the Lord. You may discover that a difficult acquaintance deserves just as much dignity as a trusted confidant. Or you may see a surprise pregnancy as a blessing from God rather than an unwelcome interruption. The more open to the Spirit you are, the more you will see with new eyes and become a light to the people around you. Father, thank you for sending your Son to offer himself for our sake. Holy Spirit, teach me the wisdom of the cross that I might love as Jesus did. Divine Life Baptized in Christ Avery Ella daughter of Dan and Nicole (Ely) Bigelow Louis Matthew son of Christopher and Julie (Rumple) Aichler Thank You A Belated Thank You From St. Vincent de Paul Although we are late in expressing our gratitude to you, it is no less sincere. We wish to thank the students, parents, teachers and staff of the Religious Education Department and Shrine Grade School for filling 18 baskets with non-perishable food items. St. Vincent de Paul added supermarket fresh food vouchers along with Toy's R Us and Kohls gift cards. Year after year we are a team that can't be beat! - St. Vincent de Paul Shrine Conference Mass at Senior Centers American House Residence 1900 N. 5 February 16, 2014 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Let us belong entirely to Him, let the divine elixir of life so penetrate us that God becomes the life of our life, the soul of our soul; let us remain conscious day and night of His divine activity." "The soul who penetrates to the depths of God and lives in them, who thereby does all things in Him, with Him, through Him and for Him, with the clarity of vision that gives her a certain similarity with simple being-this soul...is an unceasing praise of glory." - Elizabeth of the Trinity On Saturday, February 15, we celebrated the 26th anniversary of perpetual adoration here at the Shrine! In it he "recounts the fascinating story of the four extraordinary years he spent laboring over the twelve thousand square feet of the vast ceiling [of the Sistine Chapel] while the power politics and personal rivalries that abounded in Rome swirled around him. Contrary to legend, he neither worked alone nor on his back. He and his hand picked assistants stood bending backward on a special scaffold he designed for the purpose." (Inside front book jacket). 10 Page 10 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings Third Grade In the four months since you ve heard from us, the third graders have been learning in leaps and bounds! We have been steadily developing our faith. We ve written saint reports, spent time learning and reflecting on the Jesse Tree along with the significance of each of the weeks of Advent. We are now engaged in researching leaders of the Church and will be writing reports on a number of popes. We have also been focusing on the Virtues and Gifts of the Holy Spirit. During this month we are learning about Courage. In addition to studying Church history, we have also learned about our country s beginnings from the colonists through the Emancipation Proclamation. We have discovered what it means to be a good citizen and are looking forward to building desktop diorama reports on famous people. Another exciting hands-on project is for the school-wide S.T.E.M. Day on February 28 th. S.T.E.M. stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. Using household materials, our future engineers will each build a simple, manual machine to sort plain and peanut M & M s by size! We are seeing math everywhere lately; geometry lessons have developed our understanding of plane figures. Do you remember the difference between equilateral, isosceles, and scalene triangles? Ask a third grader and find out if you are correct! While you are at it, ask them about their multiplication facts. Our daily flash card races, weekly timed quizzes, and using the XtraMath online program are all staring to pay off. As always, keep us in your prayers. To get started, visit our table set up in Heritage Hall after all Masses on Feb 15th and 16th for more information and materials. (Materials are in English and Spanish.) The Consecration starts on February 20th and ends March 25th with a Mass celebrated by Father Ben Luedtke. 11 February 16, 2014 Page 11 D.T.P.S. So often we tend to not draw on the Old Testament for examples on everyday living since it sometimes seems so remote and unrelated to our lives in Today s reading from Sirach, one of the wisdom books in the bible, is certainly very VERY valid for us as we walk our Catholic journey of faith each day. The writer tells us in the first line of this reading that we have free will and that our choices have importance. That first line said If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you. Can it be any clearer than that? It is simple, follow the commandment and you can be saved. Each day we are faced with challenges and choices and with the free will given us by God, we must decide the course of action for ourselves. Some days are harder than others to steer clear of temptations aren t they? Just a billboard or a song on the radio or a comment by a coworker can put the next lines of the reading into play when it says he has set before you fire and water in other words you are faced with a choice between good and evil, and we are to stretch out our hand and choose between following or rejecting one of God s commandments. Jump to the gospel reading when Jesus talks about those commandments and says I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. None of us is perfect and none of us can go through life without being tempted, however this coming week I challenge you to work hard to avoid the near temptation of sin by trying to avoid gossip or offensive TV shows or radio programs that can tear us down and lead us into temptation. Stay strong in your faith this week so you can glorify the Lord by your life! In Christ, Deacon Tom Christopher West is Coming to Shrine of the Little Flower! What is the meaning of life? Why did God create us male and female? Why is there evil in the world and how do we overcome it? How do we attain true happiness on earth? What kind of joys await us in heaven? How can we experience the love we long for in the depth of our hearts? Through a mixture of sound theology and popular culture, Christopher West answers these questions and more. Christopher West is a research fellow and faculty member of the Theology of the Body Institute. He is also one of the most sought after speakers in the Church today, having delivered more than 1,000 public lectures on four continents, in more than a dozen countries, and in over 200 American cities. Christopher will be presenting his talk based on the book, Fill These Hearts, in the main church on March 26, 7-9 pm. Cost is free, but a collection will be taken. This presentation is appropriate for high school aged and older. For more information, contact the Shrine Office of Religious Formation at or visit Attention all Educational, Evangelization and Catholic Culture Ministries and Groups The Catechetical Faith Formation/Catholic Culture Commission (CFFC) has gatherings scheduled for representatives of all parish and school groups that work with faith education, evangelization and/or Catholic culture. Please send one representative from your group to the 7 to 8:30 pm meeting Tuesday, February 18 in the High School Library. Our agenda will include a brief discussion about the AOD model of parish organization, CFFC activities and a chance for you to share about your ministries. This is a great networking opportunity as well as a chance for groups to coordinate efforts. For more information and to RSVP, please contact Steve Whitmore at whitmoresj@yahoo.com. Thank you.

13 February 16, 2014 Page 13 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at the National Shrine are in need of additional trained volunteers. We are especially in need of additional ministers at the 12:30 and 6:00 pm Sunday Masses This ministry does not have a special schedule. The only request made of the ministers is to volunteer to serve at whatever Mass they attend. If interested, please attend the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion Training Session to be held in the church on Tuesday Evening, February 25, at 7:30 pm. We will meet in front of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Please arrive a little early in order to start the training on time. Any previously trained Ministers who would like refresher training are welcome to join us. Ignite Evangelization in Your Parish! The ChristLife Program: An Informational Evening How can we bring Catholics into a personal relationship with Jesus? How can we lead non-practicing Catholics or spiritual seekers to discover Christ as the center of their lives in the Catholic way of life? The Archdiocese of Detroit Office of Evangelization is sponsoring an Informational Evening on Wednesday, February 26, from 7-9 pm at Sacred Heart Major Seminary to introduce ChristLife a Catholic Ministry of Evangelization. ChristLife is a program designed to begin a parish process of intentional evangelization. It has brought many Catholics into a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus. Its founder, Dave Nodar, along with Bishop Michael Byrnes and Fr. Joe Horn will be presenters. All are welcome and encouraged to attend clergy, parish staff, and laity. The evening is free but limited space is available so register now at For questions and further information please contact Cheryl Hurick at hurick.cheryl@aod.org or Marriage: Love and Life In The Divine Plan Domestic Violence In some cases, divorce may be the only solution to a morally unacceptable situation. A specific example is a home where the safety of a spouse and children is at risk. As the Catholic bishops of the United States, we reiterate what we said in our pastoral message on domestic violence, When I Call for Help, namely, that no one in a marriage is obliged to maintain common living with an abusing spouse. We want to assure people who are caught in the tragedy of an abusive marriage that the Church is committed to offering them support and assistance.
