1 Shrine Herald July 3, 2011 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Happy July 4 th Monday we celebrate the birth of our nation. It is a great civil holiday and a reminder of the freedom and liberties we enjoy. I was personally reminded of that when I attended the swearing in ceremony of my close friend, Father Tomek Maka, as a citizen of the United States this past Monday. Judge Marianne O. Battani, a judge of Eastern Michigan Federal District Court, gave an excellent welcoming address to the new citizens. While she told them to maintain their individual customs and cultures, she strongly urged them to become fully informed participants in the process of the government of the United States. She pointed out that the group was one of the smallest groups she had ever sworn in. There were 22 individuals but they were from 16 different countries. The judge pointed out that not many people could learn 16 different languages and that it was important for all of us to communicate. To be fully informed, and to facilitate full participation, she encouraged all of the new citizens of all ages to learn as much of the English language as possible. She pointed out that our nation is strong because of the diversity of so many different people coming together. The new citizens were advised to take their civic responsibilities seriously. The judge told them they should be informed voters, be willing to serve jury duty if called, and to volunteer in some capacity to build up the community. I could hear John Kennedy s words, Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country, echoing in my head. What the judge asked the new citizens to do, we all should be doing all the time. Mass on the Fourth of July is at 9 am. Come and pray with us for the peace and prosperity of our nation. CSA 2011 Monday, July 4 9 am Mass Only If you have not yet received your CSA pledge card, please pick it up at the parish office or after one of the Sunday morning Masses next weekend. With Changing Lives Together and the Catholic Services Appeal coming so close together they seem to blend into one and get lost. Changing Lives Together is about new initiatives and fiscal responsibility. It is about paying off a mortgage or adding a room. CSA is about ongoing services of the Archdiocese beyond the scope of any one parish. It is about paying the monthly bills. continued on page 3...

You, the faithful, provide the resources with which the Church operates. I am grateful and humbled by your generosity and trust through these difficult times. In the spirit of Sharing the Light, I want you to know the financial health of your Archdiocese. Shortly after my installation as Archbishop two years ago, I appointed a commission of lay financial experts and priests to assess archdiocesan finances. In September 2009, that commission and a task force I appointed to examine archdiocesan administrative operations concluded that our financial situation was in need of urgent and significant reform. To stabilize our finances, I accepted several recommendations proposed by these two work groups. When the Archdiocese reorganized operations in 2009, we eliminated dozens of positions. We cut spending and are addressing our major sources of debt. Because of the selfless efforts and sacrifices of many, the Archdiocese will operate with a balanced budget effective July 1, Some of the problems we confronted in 2009 were caused by the recession. Regrettably, others were within our control. We have learned from this experience, and have implemented many changes in how we conduct the business of the Archdiocese. We are striving to be good stewards of that which the Lord has given to us. I pledge to you that we will continue to address these challenges directly, openly, and thoroughly. To learn more about archdiocesan finances, I encourage you to visit online.org/sharingthelight/finances. I welcome your feedback and ask you to join me in asking the Virgin Mother of God to protect and advance our efforts to fulfill Christ s mission to his Church. Sincerely yours in Christ, The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron Archbishop of Detroit National Shrine of the Little Flower Perpetual Mass Enrollment Cards The National Shrine of the Little Flower now has a beautiful six page perpetual Mass card available at the Parish rectory office and the National Shrine gift shop. 3 July 3, 2011 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... I picked up my CSA card and filled it out a week ago. I made my usual pledge of $1,500 and will pay it off over the coming year in installments. I encourage you to make your pledge if you have not done so as of yet. Together in Faith Phase II Together in Faith is the Archbishop s initiative to further strategic planning for the archdiocese, parishes and schools. Our South Oakland Vicariate completed the first phase of the planning process this past week. Various recommendations from the vicariate were forwarded to the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council for their review. They will propose recommendations based on the proposals from the 16 vicariates of the archdiocese. The recommendations of the APC will then be returned to the Vicariates next September to be refined. The recommendations include the closure and combining of parishes and schools throughout the archdiocese. proposals, nothing final has yet been decided. Rosie, Carlito and Kodiak These are Carlito is making the move to his outdoor summer home and loving it. We have to keep an eye on him. Last summer it was so hot at one point that the poor boy suffered heat exhaustion. When it is too hot he has to be brought into the air conditioning. I thought he was a tropical bird. 5 July 3, 2011 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. - Jesus (the Gospel of Matthew) Although I have lived through much darkness, I have seen enough evidence to be unshakably convinced that no difficulty, no fear is so great that it can completely suffocate the hope that springs eternal in our hearts. Do not let that hope die! Stake your life on it! (Toronto, 2002) Love your families. Teach them the dignity of all life; teach them the ways of harmony and peace; teach them the value of faith and prayer and goodness! Life Matters Below are excerpts from a speech given by Frederick Douglass in 1852 to the Rochester Ladies Anti-Slavery Society in honor of the Fourth of July. The speech was entitled, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? In this speech, Douglass asks what the Fourth of the July means to a slave. We live in a country where we are blessed with many freedoms and we fight around the world to protect the freedoms of others. Yet, so many people in this country are stripped of the basic right to live every day. In our day, we should ask what this day means to those who have not been given the right to live or whose life has been cut short. What do you suppose our forefathers would say about giving people the right to choose yet depriving others the right to live? Are we really independent and free? On this Fourth of July, we must thank God for the freedoms we had to fight the injustice of slavery in the past and the freedom we have to fight abortion and euthanasia in the present. At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. O! had I the ability, and could I reach the nation s ear, I would, today, pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke. For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed; and its crimes against God and man must be proclaimed and denounced. What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciations of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade, and solemnity, are, to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy - a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. Seeker of Truth is the story of a 20th century saint, a German-Jewish philosopher who converted to Catholicism, became a Carmelite nun (Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross), and was eventually martyred in Auschwitz. Her life story is that of a scholar searching for ultimate truth, about which John Paul II said in his homily at her canonization she finally discovered truth has a name, it is Jesus Christ. This challenging and engaging study is perfect for the modern woman who shares Stein s longing for the uncompromising truth found in the beauty of Church teaching. Cost for the class is $70, which includes all materials. The course will be facilitated by Melissa Thompson and Cindy Hind.
