1 Shrine Herald February 28, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Lent 2010 This Second Sunday of Lent we move from the Temptations of Jesus to the Transfiguration of Jesus. There is a place in Palestine, just west of Jericho, called Temptation Mountain. It recalls the tempter taking Jesus up a high mountain and showing him all the kingdoms of the world and suggesting that it could all be his if he would worship the tempter. Further to the northwest, Mount Tabor stands out in stunning contrast to the surrounding plain and is considered the Mount of Transfiguration. To the south lies the Mount of Olives, the site of the Agony in the Garden. Just the other side of the City of Jerusalem is Calgary, the Mountain of the Cross and Resurrection. Lent is a journey from one mountain to another. From the temptation to set God aside, to make God secondary or even superfluous or annoying in our lives, we are called to open our minds and hearts to Jesus of whom the Father says: This is my chosen Son; listen to him. We are told that Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain by themselves and was transfigured before them. But this experience is intricately joined to the Mount of Olives and the Agony when Jesus once again takes Peter, James, and John aside and agonizes in prayer. The appearance of Jesus in His Divine Glory is intrinsically connected to the Glory of the Resurrection only possible through the Agony and the Cross. John the evangelist thus refers to the Cross of Jesus as exaltation. It is at the Cross that we too proclaim My Lord and my God. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Wednesday Evening Mass Royal Oak, MI Second Sunday of Lent This Wednesday, March 3, at 7 pm, a Mass will be celebrated in the Albanian Language by Rev. Nue Gjergii and Rev. Anton Lcira. This is a continuation of the series from Lent last year helping us to understand the rich diversity of the Catholic Church. You will find more information about the Albanian Catholic Church in this issue of the Herald. continued on page 3...

He would give the land of Canaan as their territory. Abraham believed God s promise, even though his wife Sarah was elderly and barren. However, he does ask God for a sign of confirmation because the ancient ritual for handing over property demanded a covenant. The animals offered in sacrifice to seal such a pact were cut in two and placed apart. The contracting parties walked between the split halves signifying that the same fate awaited them if they did not keep their part of the covenant. Notice that God symbolically passes between the animals under the symbol of a pillar of fire. Abraham did not walk between the sacrifices indicating that this is a unilateral covenant offered by God for Abraham s belief. Although God s promise was not fulfilled for centuries, it was a foreshadowing of the promise by Jesus in the new covenant that mansions in heaven would be home for eternity for all who believe in Him. The Promised Land is no longer just a sliver of real estate, but heaven, itself. The Chosen People did not have to change their appearance to enter the Promised Land. St. Paul speaks clearly in the second reading today of the real Promised Land. Our citizenship is in heaven. He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body. Ever since the day of Christ s resurrection, our home and permanent abode is heaven. Our time on earth is only a period of exile, a time given to us so we have an opportunity to imitate the love of Jesus. Lent is the time for us to examine our lives to see if we really understand that the reason for this life is to gain eternal life. This goal is not achieved by luck! The Gospel account of the Transfiguration of Jesus before Peter, James and John gives all of us a glimpse of the glory that awaits us. His face shone as the sun, His garments also became dazzling white. Moses represents the Old Law and Elijah the prophets of the old covenant. Jesus is clearly the central figure in this vision. The Father does not speak often in Scripture, but on this occasion, He honors His Son and tells the apostles and us what we must do: This is my chosen Son; listen to him. God tells them that they must listen to and obey Jesus. He takes the place of all the teachers of old and has the Father s authority. The apostles found it difficult to follow this advice because the message that Jesus would die was not a welcome thought. The later passion and crucifixion of Jesus would be the greatest test of their faith. The apostles did not understand the true mission of Jesus as Messiah. Only after the Resurrection and Descent of the Holy Spirit did they understand. If the Transfiguration were a glimpse of paradise, the reality of love expressed in the earthly life of Jesus shows the price of admittance. No, we will not be crucified like Jesus, but we are called upon to love others as He loved us. Remember that this is the New Commandment He gave us. How do we accomplish this task? In a thousand ways, but each begins with the realization that the very nature of love is sacrificial. Love must be shared; it must be given away. Love cannot be horded or it will die. Love is the key word that must govern our lives in this world. Our place in heaven is not based upon how much we know. The ranking of angels in heaven is based on their knowledge of God. Thank God we are not measured by the same standard because we are certainly limited in this life by an IQ. No, knowledge is not the determining factor for us. It is how much we have loved served others, and do you realize that there is no limit on how much we can love? Lent is the time to focus on the life of Jesus. Lent is the time to examine our behavior. Is our life a style modeled after Jesus that makes room for others? If not, why will you need a mansion in heaven?

3 February 28, 2010 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Finances I appreciate the generous response of many parishioners to the Stewardship presentation on the last weekend of January. Everyone should be aware that like everyone else in tight financial times, the parish has taken steps to cut expenses considerably. Salaries have been frozen both last year and this year. Christmas bonuses have been eliminated. Energy conservation continues to be a concern and steps are taken to put it into effect. Ways are constantly sought to cut expenses. In accord with the wishes of the Archbishop, I have reconstituted the Finance Council of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. This council of highly trained and knowledgeable finance managers and attorneys, along with Mr. Skaggs the director of our finance department, Mr. York the co-director of our development department, Mr. Sutherland and Mr. Art Massucci the facilities managers of the North and South parish campuses will act as advisors to the pastor and to the parish council on the financial status of the entire parish and schools. Rosie & Carlito A spy has told me that Rosie is not losing any weight because practically everyone who works in the parish office has treats hidden somewhere in their desk or office. Rosie makes her daily rounds, sometimes more than once I am told, to visit everyone. She looks longingly at the hiding place until she gets her treat. I cut back on her food and she simply makes more visits. Maybe she thinks that everyday is Halloween and it is Trick or Treat every day of the year. Divine Life Baptized in Christ Joshua Jeffrey son of Jeffrey and Christine (Fiebig) Zboril Keara Grace daughter of Gregory and Rosalia (Emamuele) Schultz Roamin with Rosie A big woof to my National Shrine friends, Last week, I told you about how cool the National Shrine was. I had even found a Michigan tile on the outside. Did you know where? A number of people found it outside of the southern doors near the 12 mile cross walk to the grade school. On the square is the apple blossom. The squares were intended as a way to show that donations from people of every state had helped to build the Shrine. (People from all over the United States donated because of Father Coughlin s radio ministry.) Because of the Little Flower theme throughout the church, Father Coughlin wanted state flowers used instead of state seals. Well, you know it has been cold for the past few weeks. Sometimes, I have been taking walks inside the church building. In one of the rooms, there is a pool. It must be a special pool because Monsignor never lets me drink from it or splash around in it. Once in awhile, though, I see a priest take some water from it and splash babies! Do you know what room I am in and what this pool is called? Was it always there? If you know, contact me at rosie@shrinechurch.com.

5 February 28, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "This is my beloved Son. Listen to HIm." (Mark 9:7) "When one has the grace to sense a strong experience of God, it is as though seeing something similar to what the disciples experienced during the Transfiguration: For a moment they experienced ahead of time something that will constitute the happiness of paradise....however, no one lives "on Tabor" while on earth. Human existence is a journey of faith and, as such, goes forward more in darkness than in full light, with moments of obscurity and even profound darkness. While we are here, our relationship with God develops more with listening than with seeing; and even contemplation takes place, so to speak, with closed eyes, thanks to the interior light lit in us by the word of God. This is the gift and commitment for each one of us in the Lenten season: To listen to Christ, like Mary. To listen to Him in the Word, preserved in Sacred Scripture. To listen to Him in the very events of our lives, trying to read in them the messages of Providence. To listen to Him, finally, in our brothers, especially in the little ones and the poor, for whom Jesus HImself asked our concrete love. To listen to Christ is to obey His voice. This is the only way that leads to joy and love. " - Pope Benedict XVI, Benedictus Open hours: Sunday, midnight, 2 pm; Monday, 1 am; Thursday, noon; and Saturday, 5 pm. We were blessed with the presence of three young seminarians who shared afterward plans for their upcoming Holy Land Pilgrimage in May, where they look forward to walking in the footsteps of Christ. You may still make a donation to help them defray the cost of this cherished trip, where they will gain many graces and insights to serve the Church as Holy priests in the future. Please make checks out to Sacred Heart Seminary and mark "Holy Land Fund" and leave at the rectory office or drop in the Sunday collection basket. Our Seminarians expressed great gratitude for all of our prayers and urged us to remember them as they too will pray for us in the Holy Land.

Nue Gjergii, Pastor, Our Lady of Albanians, Beverly Hills; and Rev. Anton Kcira, Pastor, St. Paul Parish, Rochester Hills, Michigan. Albania is a mountainous country about the size of the state of Maryland located in southeastern Europe. It borders Montenegro, Serbia, and Macedonia on the north and east, Greece in the south and southeast, and the Adriatic Sea on the west. The name Albania was given by the Romans (after a port called Albanopolis). The population is about 3.4 million of which religious groupings are Muslim (70%), Eastern Orthodox (20%), and Roman Catholics (10%). Another two million Albanians live is neighboring Balkan countries (Kosovo region in Yugoslavia, Macedonia, and Turkey). Albanians are the most recent group of Europeans to immigrate to the United States and their numbers have remained small. Perhaps as many as 75,000 to 150,000 now live in America. Early Albanian immigrants settled around Boston. The 1990 census revealed that the largest number of Albanians live in New York City with a high concentration in the Bronx, followed by Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Illinois, California, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The history of the Catholic Church in Albania has been most difficult and complex due to the small size of the population and the many political struggles that have continually changed the face of Albania over the centuries. The 19 th century saw a more formal establishment of the Church in Albania with the division ecclesiastically into several archiepiscopal provinces including Antivari and Scutari. Several other smaller provinces were without bishops and depended immediately on the Holy See in Rome. Although Albania is geographically located where the Eastern Rite Church is traditionally found, the Albanian Catholic Church follows the Western Latin Rite. Albanian Catholics began to arrive in the United States between 1960 and Presently there are only three Albanian Catholic parishes: Our Lady of Shkodra in the Bronx, New York City; St Paul Catholic Church in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and Our Lady of Albanians in Beverly Hills, Michigan. These two parishes are Latin Rite and fall under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Detroit. Our National Shrine Parish Family warmly welcomes all our Albanian brothers and sisters in Christ and look forward to the celebration of an Albanian language Mass at 7 pm on Wednesday, March 3.

13 February 28, 2010 Page 13 Colorectal Cancer Screening Kits March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Again this year, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital-Oakland is supplying us with free Screening Kits. These will be available March 1-31, at the Parish Office during regular business hours. With questions or for further information, call Muriel O Donnell, RN: Miscarriage Ministry I was nine weeks along and lying on the exam table, waiting patiently to hear my baby s heartbeat for the first time. The doctor looked concerned and compassionate as she said: I m sorry; your baby has no heartbeat. It took a minute...a very long minute...to sink in. That was certainly not what I was expecting to hear. My options were explained. I tried to pay attention, but I was in a haze. After composing myself, I looked at my midwife and asked, If I choose to go the hospital, what happens to the remains? And she didn t know. She didn t know? Of all that was happening, this was the part I had the hardest time grasping. Why didn t she know? I hadn t just lost an appendix, a limb, or a piece of damaged tissue, I had lost a child. I went home, told my husband, searched the internet for anonymous support, hoping for answers. I had so many questions. Unfortunately, lots of women have been in my shoes. By the grace of God, we were able to get our baby s remains from the hospital. My husband called Sister Noreen, and from that point on, our story was headed for a happy ending. She immediately directed us to Sullivan s Funeral Home. They donated a small burial box for the remains and Holy Sepulchre Cemetery offered a burial plot free of charge. Sister came to the graveside and performed a beautiful, simple, ceremony. Our baby was laid to rest. Our baby was sent home to God. In talking with Sister later, I learned that I was the first woman to call her after a miscarriage. Ours was the first early term burial she had been part of. What do other women do? I asked her. She wondered, too. There is work to be done to help others suffering the loss of miscarriage. But I need help getting started. Have you or someone you know had a miscarriage? Would you be willing to share your story? Talk about what helped you get through it? What was the hardest part? What do you wish could have gone differently? Do you have ideas how to help others who have miscarried? If interested, please Colleen Graveline at zeltcoll@hotmail.com or call to set up a meeting. Our church will help us. Vocations This is My chosen Son; listen to Him (Luke 9:35). If you are listening to the Lord, you may be sensing the invitation to follow Christ as a priest. Contact Fr. Only with those closest to us do we dare reveal our real selves. Love in families is based on mutual acceptance. It s the real thing. - by Bud Ozar

14 Page 14 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings Preschool The four year old preschoolers have adopted some seniors that live in a nearby nursing facility. We are sending them homemade cards on a regular basis, which we are told that they enjoy immensely. One of the residents is 100 years old, and we are hoping to receive a visit from her in the spring. We are also planning a trip there so we can meet all of our new friends. The three year olds have made a number of visits to the art room in the Big School. We love going over and walking quietly in the halls so that we don t disturb the older children. Our junior version of the Motors Moms program is working very well. The children are jumping on the trampoline, throwing and catching and spinning on the Sit and Spin. All of these skills will help our children with early learning success. March will soon arrive and we are looking forward to spring, but first we will celebrate St. Patrick s Day. We will be making a leprechaun ladder in hopes that one will visit our home. As Easter approaches, we ll paint crosses to remember Jesus on Good Friday and make baskets and dye eggs to celebrate the risen Christ. We are looking forward as well to a unit on recycling to commemorate Earth Day. We will be making many projects using the things that one typically throws away. Spring also brings caterpillars to our classroom. The preschoolers love to watch the caterpillars grow big and fat, turn into a chrysalis and emerge as beautiful butterflies. We will also plant sunflower seeds and watch them grow throughout the summer. We have many things to do for the remainder of the school year! Upcoming Dates March 5 10:30-11:15 Parent/Tot Program 4:30-7:30 p.m. Fish Bake Mrs. Foerg Library. A $20 donation is encouraged at the door. Dinner and door prized included.
