1 Shrine Herald Royal Oak, MI July 21, 2013 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Applause I was both embarrassed and taken aback on the 4th of July when some people began to clap at the end of the homily I had just delivered. Clapping during the liturgy is inappropriate, especially when it is directed toward something said, done, or performed by human beings. The purpose of the liturgy is to give praise and thanks to the Lord Our God. The following quote is from Pope Benedict XVI s book The Spirit of the Liturgy. Wherever applause breaks out in the liturgy because of some human achievement, it is a sure sign that the essence of liturgy has totally disappeared and been replaced by a kind of religious entertainment. Such attractiveness fades quickly It cannot compete in the market of leisure pursuits, incorporating as it increasingly does various forms of religious titillation Liturgy can only attract people when it looks, not at itself, but at God, when it allows him to enter and act. Then something truly unique happens, beyond competition, and people have a sense that more has taken place than a recreational activity. Applause during church services is traditionally regarded as taboo, in light of the sanctity of the proceedings; stress is on the aspect of worship rather than the personality of the individual preaching or singing during the service. Normally we do not applaud during the liturgy at the end of a hymn or musical reflection. Nor do we applaud at the end of a sermon or homily. In these cases, the clapping actually devalues the action treating it like entertainment or a performance I am pleased with rather than as an act of prayer and praise. Clapping at the conclusion of a liturgy once it is totally completed is a delicate matter. If it is a spontaneous outburst of joy in thanksgiving and praise to God, it could be deemed We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time acceptable. More often than not, however, it is a sign of approval or appreciation for the choir, musicians, or the minister. In this situation it is distasteful and detracts from what has just taken place. Liturgy is prayer. It is praise and worship of God. It is not entertainment. Respect Along the same lines expressed in the previous section, I have received numerous complaints regarding loud conversations and prolonged visiting in church at the conclusion of Mass. These complaints legitimately come continued on page 3...

3 July 21, 2013 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... from people trying to pray, especially in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Some like to take the time after Mass to continue their thanksgiving. Socializing is much better carried out in Heritage Hall, the vestibules, the ushers room and like areas. Certainly the area near the tabernacle is the least appropriate place for conversations and visiting. Let us all work at deeper respect for the sacredness of the worship space. Home Visitors of Mary We are most appreciative for the visit of the HVM Sisters to our community. If you wish to contribute to their missionary work, you can do so using the Missionary Cooperation Envelopes or any envelope marked HVM over the next 2 weeks. Vigil of Saint Anne Please refer to information in this issue of the Shrine Herald regarding our bus pilgrimage to the Cathedral for the prayer service with the Archbishop and the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan this Thursday evening. Rosie, Carlito and Lord Stanley Rosie wants to thank everyone for their kind concern during her recent illness. She is doing much better, not quite up to swimming yet, but doing much better. This Weekend Sisters, Home Visitors of Mary The Sisters, Home Visitors of Mary will be here this weekend seeking your support for their ministry in Nigeria. Founded in Detroit in 1949, the Sisters have served the parishes of Detroit as pastoral ministers and evangelists. Twelve years ago two Detroit Sisters established the Home Visitors of Mary in Abuja, Nigeria at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria parish. They are now twentyone Sisters in Nigeria. The formation of the young sisters to carry on the mission is key for the young, dynamic Church of Nigeria. The Sisters serve in two dioceses, five parishes in a variety of ministries from schools to counseling of AIDS patients, as catechists and youth ministers. The Sisters charism is out reach to those on the edge of society, to be the Church in the midst of the poor, and to recognize our unity amidst diversity. Your donations support the ministry of the Sisters and the education of the young Sisters for ministry. We need your support to bring legislation before Michigan lawmakers that prevents taxpayer money from paying for abortions. Abortion is not health care, and no citizen should be forced to pay for a procedure that destroys human life. Michigan has long prohibited tax dollars from paying for or subsidizing abortion. A petition drive is underway to collect 258,000 signatures to ensure health plans on the newly created exchange abide by this same tradition. If someone wants abortion coverage, they will need to pay for an optional rider, not you. By signing your name on a petition, you can put this legislation in front of Michigan lawmakers for a simple majority vote. To date, 22 states have passed similar legislation. The language on the petition states: An initiation of Legislation to enact the Abortion Insurance Opt- Out Act. The initiated law would require the purchase of coverage for elective abortion in a health care plan to be by an optional rider only; require notice to employees for whom elective abortion coverage is purchased by their employer; and provide penalties for violations of this act. If not enacted by the Michigan State Legislature in accordance with the Michigan Constitution of 1963, the proposed legislation is to be voted on at the General Election, November 4, The Michigan Catholic Conference supports this legislation and is encouraging all churches to collect petition signatures. You will have the opportunity to sign the petition after all masses this weekend. For more information including the full language of the law, or how to get petitions to circulate, please visit Michigan s Voice website ( Additionally, you can support the petition campaign financially by picking up envelops at all church entrances. If you re interested in volunteering, please contact Joe Queen at Rachel s Vineyard On average, there is a five to ten year period of denial during which a woman who was traumatized by her abortion will repress her feelings. Come find release from your anguish and experience forgiveness and hope on a Rachel s Vineyard retreat. 10 Page 10 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Thank you once again for your warm welcome, I m truly thrilled to be here! As I was moving out of the seminary recently, I was reflecting on how God profoundly blessed my life by allowing me to discern and study for the priesthood at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. Those years were so very blessed and I can t be grateful enough for the time I was given at Sacred Heart. Sometimes I think that Sacred Heart Major Seminary is really the best kept secret in the city of Detroit. The place is simply phenomenal. The education that priests, seminarians and lay men and women receive there is truly top notch, with the seminary laying claim to one of, if not the best, faculties of any seminary in the United States. With these thoughts in mind, I m writing to you today to express the tremendous gratitude that I have for the financial contributions provided by you and all of the donors to the Archdiocese of Detroit s Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) over the years. Gifts to CSA support Sacred Heart Seminary. I think the CSA contributions of the faithful do far more good than we all really know. Can you imagine how many lives the priests ordained this year from Sacred Heart are going to touch? How many lives our lay men and women from Sacred Heart who have studied to be pastoral and catechetical leaders, how many lives they ll touch? Or better yet, how many lives Jesus will touch through them all? Our Catholic Services Appeal helps to support the Church s mission, a mission we have all been called and joined to through our baptisms, a mission that saves souls, a mission that brings us the joy of knowing our savior more and more each passing day as we continue to receive, live and spread the gospel in our daily lives! If you have not already made a contribution to the Catholic Services Appeal, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so. We have accomplished great things as a parish working in concert with the Archdiocese and its many ministries, programs and services, including Sacred Heart Seminary. The gift you make today will help other men discern their call from the Lord in addition to preparing our future priest s and lay catechetical & pastoral leaders as well. Perhaps it will even help to lead them here to National Shrine of the Little Flower, as it did me! One final thought: I have found it to be totally true over the years that God simply will not be outdone in generosity! God bless you abundantly for your faith and generosity, Fr. Patrick Gonyeau, Associate Pastor Name: Street Address: City: State: Zip:

12 Page 12 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower D. T. P. S. So you are reading the title and wondering what it means right? I ve tried to come up with a super catchy title and that s all I ve got? Ok, it is simple, it stands for Deacon Tom s Post Script and does have some real purpose. You see you have just heard one of the priests (or maybe myself) give a wonderful homily and sometimes we may walk away and say So what action can I take for myself and/or family to really live out the scriptural message. I am going to work hard to find practical suggestions each week that can help us continue to grow closer to God and grow in our holiness. So my first example will be short this week due to my little background. Let s think back to the second reading today from St. Paul to the Colossians. Did you hear that first sentence? St. Paul said I REJOICE in my SUFFERING for your sake Seriously? Did he really say that he was rejoicing and excited that he was suffering greatly for others? Likely one of our first reactions might be Well, he was a saint after all, he was able to really deal with it but I sure couldn t and yet the reality is that we too are called to embrace our suffering, great or small, and use it for good. As Catholic Christians we have a wonderful advantage over some other religions (even some Christians) who believe that suffering is simply to be avoided, they have no way to make any meaning out of human suffering! Yet there really is no way to avoid suffering is there? It is as big a part of our human experience as life and death are. Yet we are the ones who truly understand that it is only in heaven where there is no more suffering, no more pain, no more fear. It is when we look at Jesus on the cross that we begin to really see that suffering has real meaning, that suffering is beneficial and that concept we used to hear from the nuns or from mom or from grandma of offering it up really has a purpose. This week, we are likely to run into someone who is suffering and struggling with the why of suffering. It s our turn to reach out to them, tell them with our words or actions, that their suffering does have real meaning, that Jesus can give it true meaning. Encourage them through prayer and love to learn more about this and take action themselves. - Deacon Tom Avery Dream Cruise 2013 In Need of a Several Dads!
