5 September 16, 2012 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "O, Jesus, give me light to understand the mystery and the value of Christian suffering." "O my Jesus, the Cross is Your standard; I should be ashamed to ask to be delivered from it. From one evil only I ardently beg You to preserve me: from any deliberate sin, however slight. O Lord, I beg You by the merits of Your sacred Passion to keep all sin far from me. But as for other evils--bodily or spiritual sufferings, physical pain or mental anguish--i beg Your light and strength: light to understand the hidden meaning which they have in the plans of Your divine Providence, light to believe firmly that every sorrow or trial, every pain or disappointment, is planned by You for my greater good; strength not to let myself be influenced by the false maxims of the world or led astray by the vain mirage of earthly happiness, strength to accept suffering of any kind with courage and love." - Divine Intimacy Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. 7 September 16, 2012 Page 7 Lending Library A more comprehensive book about Mary than the one reviewed last week is: First Lady of the World: A Popular History of Devotion To Mary by Peter Lappin. "Here is a book about Mary which traces the history of devotion to her from the time of the apostles and the early Church to the present day. It finds in the Old Testament the foreshadowings of the one whom God the Father would choose to be the mother of His Son. It follows the Church through the centuries and describes the unfolding of theological truth and popular piety concerning Mary. It shows how Christian believers in every age have turned to the Mother of God for help and inspiration. And it discusses the place of Mary in the Church after the second Vatican Council, while looking forward to future theology and devotion." (Section 6, Mary). Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). And then return later for a special Feast of St. Francis of Assisi Mass at 7:00 pm We are also excited to be working with New Beginnings Animal Rescue this year to collect food for their Pet Food Pantry. See more information below on this worthy cause. Animal Rescue to Collect Food for Pet Food Pantry at Animal Blessing Representatives from New Beginnings Animal Rescue will participate in the annual animal blessing Thursday, October 4 the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi - at the National Shrine. Representatives will be on hand to collect cat and dog food for their pet food pantry, which is located in Wild Birds Unlimited in Royal Oak. They will also have information available about their pantry and adoption efforts. New Beginnings, founded in November 2010, distributed more than 17,000 pounds of food last year through its pet food pantry. It fed 780 dogs and 917 cats from households in 25 cities across Oakland County, helping to keep pets and their families together during tough economic times. Folks who cannot afford to feed their pets because of job loss or other temporary financial strain find a helping hand at New Beginnings pet pantry. Volunteers assist new and returning members with free food every Sunday. New Beginnings is a foster-based rescue with volunteers in Royal Oak, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Birmingham, and beyond. The organization holds adoption events in Royal Oak and Birmingham twice a month and features one of its adoptable cats every Thursday in the window at Bingo Pet Salon in downtown Royal Oak. Please consider donating a few cans or a bag or two of dog or cat food when you attend the animal blessing at the National Shrine on October 4. Visit the New Beginnings website at Natural Family Planning Do you know in which direction your life is going? 12 Page 12 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings With three weeks into the school year, we are truly getting into our routines. Our Opening Mass was a special one as we reflected on Jesus as Our Shepherd and the role we have in following Him as his sheep. We re now getting ready for the Feast of St. Therese on October 1 st. As our patron saint, this feast day is especially important. At the Grade School we try to follow her little ways in growing closer to Christ. All three schools come together for an All Schools Mass at 9:00 am that day and Vespers takes place in the church that evening at 7:00 pm. Our Grade School Knights in Harmony choir will be singing at Vespers. Our afterschool clubs are just beginning to form. In addition to Knights in Harmony we will have Knights in Rythym, Altar Servers, Readers Club, Math Club,Tech Club and two new clubs for fifth and sixth graders this year Geography Club and S.T.E.M Club (science, technology, engineering and math). Of course, all of the above is in addition to all of the CYO sports that our Dads Club organizes and runs. It s so exciting to see our kids active and involved in the school and church. Arts, Beats & Eats THANK YOU to all who volunteered at the Shrine tent for Arts Beats Eats in downtown Royal Oak over Labor Day weekend. We appreciate your time and energy as they were some very hot and busy days. We hope to have the amount earned by Shrine in a few weeks. Special thanks to Monsignor Easton, Andrea Hoeflein, Kevin Sutherland and Matt York for their help too. Many hands make light work, as this was such the case with our National Shrine Parishioners, parents and friends. We couldn t have done it without you all! 19 September 16, 2012 Page 19 Holy Father s Prayer Intentions September 2012 General Intention: That politicians may always act with honesty, integrity, and love for the truth. Missionary Intention: Help for the Poorest Churches. That Christian communities may have a growing willingness to send missionaries, priests, and lay people, along with concrete resources, to the poorest Churches. A Family Perspective Because the deaf man in today s gospel recognized his disability, he could seek help from Jesus. Deafness abounds in families: in our children (Oh dad, not that again ) in parents ( It is just a stage ) and in spouses ( Are you listening? ). Before Jesus can enter your home and heal, you must first recognize your deafness. - Bud Ozar Vocations Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. (Mark 8:34) If you lose your life for Jesus sake, you will find life; it is worth everything. If you think God is calling you to be a priest visit our website at or contact Fr.
