1 Shrine Herald January 20, 2013 We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Collaboration Partners As parishes all over the Archdiocese of Detroit are closing, merging, or clustering, we here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower have been directed to act as collaboration partners with Saint Mary s of Royal Oak. The conclusion of the Together in Faith process indicated that both Shrine and Saint Mary were parishes strong enough to be independent. At the same time it was concluded that working closer together we could strengthen one another. The school administrators, school governance boards, and parish finance managers have begun meeting with Father Wertanen and me to investigate ways to work closely together to strengthen our schools. Similar meetings will take place with Parish Finance Councils and Parish Pastoral Councils. Our first meeting was very helpful. Several possible areas of collaboration were identified and initial tasks were set. We are looking at ways to strengthen our schools, provide better service, support one another and cut expenses. While Father Wertanen takes a much deserved vacation, the priests at Shrine will cover a few of his Masses and provide backup for ministerial needs. There will be more about our collaborating as we move forward and as we plan together into the future. Flu Advisory The Detroit Archdiocese, like many dioceses across the country, is encouraging medically sound practices to help mitigate the potential spread of flu viruses. Our recommendations are in line with what you ve likely seen and heard from media outlets in recent days: practicing common sense, covering your mouth should you need to sneeze or cough, and staying at home if you re sick. As it relates to gatherings in church, such as the Mass, we remind you that it is perfectly acceptable to forego a handshake at the Sign of Peace, and it is perfectly acceptable to forego drinking from the common cup at Communion time. Thank you for considering these reminders, and please keep in your prayers those who are ill with the flu, and those health care professionals in their care for the sick. Parish Mission Set aside the dates now. The Third Week of Lent, from Monday March 4 to Thursday March 7, Father Larry Richards will conduct a Parish Mission for the members of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. There will be mission activities for all ages. There will be day and/or evening sessions. continued on page 3...

3 January 20, 2013 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... What is a Parish Mission? Fr. Larry Richards, a popular Conference Speaker and pastor from Erie, PA, will conduct a four day mission. The purpose of the mission is to help people grow in their love for God and give them hope and direction in their daily lives. Fr. Larry Richards has conducted hundreds of parish missions, conference s and retreats. He is known to make the love of God real in his presentations. Fr. Larry is the founder of The Reason for Our Hope Foundation and has many Media presentations on The Truth; The Mass explained; and Confession with hundreds of thousands distributed worldwide. At all his parish missions Fr. Larry promises two things: One, you will never be bored and two, your life will be changed forever. Come and experience this truth for yourself. Each night of the Parish Mission has a different theme: Monday Night is about knowing God s Love and practical information on how to pray. Tuesday night, the focus is the gift of the Mass, and the importance of family. The center of Wednesday Night is the passion of Jesus Christ and how because of that we have freedom from, and forgiveness of, our sins. Thursday night, is the healing service and the new life of discipleship. Rosie, Carlito & Lord Stanley Lord Stanley received his Canine Good Citizen diploma in the mail. Even though it is quite impressive and he now carries the CGC title after his name, Rosie was quite unimpressed. She reminded him that it is experience and long standing service that really count. She politely indicated to him that now that he has the paper he has to live up to it. 5 January 20, 2013 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "How encouraging it is, O Lord, for me to find Your sweet Mother beside You today! Everything becomes simple and easy near Mary, beneath her maternal eye, under the protection of her powerful intercession." "There is a wonderful transformation which Jesus accomplishes in our souls by means of grace; the water of our poor human nature becomes a sharer in God's divine nature; it is transformed into the sacred wine of the life of Christ Himself. Man becomes a member of Christ, the adopted child of God, the temple of the Holy Spirit. Today, our Lady tells us how we can and should foster this precious transformation; she says to us as she once did to the servants at the Cana feast, 'Whatsoever He shall say to you, do ye.'. In these words, Mary invites us to that complete transformation in Christ which is effected by the generous practice of all that He teaches and commands. Let us, then, with humble, docile hearts, with lively faith and perfect abandonment, entrust ourselves to Jesus through Mary's hands." - Divine Intimacy Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. Thank you! Life Matters On January 22, we will commemorate the 40 th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. Since that time, over 54 million children have been killed in the womb and their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness was not protected. Today is Sanctity of Life Sunday. On this day, spend some time reflecting on the excerpt of the speech given by President Obama at the recent Sandy Nook prayer vigil. In the wake of Newtown tragedy, his words are very true and it is appropriate to mourn the loss of the 20 children killed and plead for action to be taken. But these same words should also apply to the 3,500 children violently killed every day through abortion violence that is legal. The laws of our society say that a child should only be protected when they are wanted and loved by a parent; how can this be? All children are loved by their Creator and we have an obligation to protect them all. What action will we take to stop ALL the violence against children? This is our first task -- caring for our children. It s our first job. If we don t get that right, we don t get anything right. That s how, as a society, we will be judged. And by that measure, can we truly say, as a nation, that we are meeting our obligations? Can we honestly say that we re doing enough to keep our children -- all of them -- safe from harm? Can we claim, as a nation, that we re all together there, letting them know that they are loved, and teaching them to love in return? Can we say that we re truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose?. We can t tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change. We will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true. No single law -- no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world, or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. But that can t be an excuse for inaction. Surely, we can do better than this. If there is even one step we can take to save another child, or another parent, or another town, from the grief that has visited Tucson, and Aurora, and Oak Creek, and Newtown, and communities from Columbine to Blacksburg before that -- then surely we have an obligation to try. 7 January 20, 2013 Page 7 Lending Library HELP! We are in need of a few more volunteers to work at the Lending Library, especially on Sundays from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. If you like to read, you'll enjoy exploring the large array of Catholic books available, old and new, as well as our ever expanding DVD collection, which includes many recent releases by Ignatius Press. You'll meet and talk with some of the very interesting people who come in to check out materials. It's an enjoyable way to be of service to the Parish. Some volunteers come weekly, others monthly or as needed, depending on their schedules. Call or stop in to find out more about what would be involved. 12 Page 12 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings Shrine Catholic Grade School We certainly didn t return from the holidays to a slow pace. Our first semester is completed, National Vocations Awareness Week is behind us and Catholic Schools Week is coming up quickly. Catholic Schools Week runs January 27 February 1 and our focus will be on our faith, service to others and our community with a little spirit thrown in! We re already gearing up for our New Family Open House which will be held Thursday night, February 28 at 7:00 pm. It is a great opportunity to tour the school, talk with our teachers and meet many of our parents and sixth grade students. I always tell families who visit on Welcome Wednesday mornings at 9:30 am that it is good to come to both events. The Open House gives parents a good chance to meet and talk with other parents, students, and our teachers, and the Welcome Wednesday tours give parents a chance to see our kids in action. We love showing what Shrine Catholic Grade School is all about.
