1 Shrine Herald January 8, 2012 We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI The Epiphany of the Lord Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Epiphany This year, with Epiphany on the Sunday after the 6th of January, Monday, January 9, is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord and the Liturgical end of the Christmas Season. Epiphany is now celebrated on a Sunday because of the importance of the Feast. On this day the Church recalls that Jesus came as the Savior of the entire human family represented by the three Magi who came from foreign lands. Part of the account of the coming of the Magi recalls the brutality of Herod in seeking to kill the child by killing all the male infants in Bethlehem and the surrounding vicinity. Before we are too quick to judge Herod harshly, we need to consider our own time and culture. Numbers alone point out the brutality of our day. The number of lives extinguished annually by abortion in our country far exceeds those slaughtered by Herod. One life is too many! Herod acted out of fear, greed for power, selfishness, and a host of other motives. Abortions are committed, permitted by our society, for the same reasons. To adore the Christ Child, The Word made Flesh, the origin of life, is to respect all life from the moment of conception to the last moment of natural death. The Epiphany is the Manifestation of Christ as Redeemer of all. He continues to be made known in our day especially in the little ones, the poor, the defenseless, the least of our brothers and sisters We have completed the first week of Some predict that this is the last year of the world. Theories are based on ancient calendars and predictions. The Gospels tell us that no one knows the time of the end. Only the Father knows. I prefer to place my trust in the Word of God rather than human speculation. Ordinary Time It has been the custom of the Church to announce the dates of the moveable feasts for the new year on Epiphany. The time between now and Ash Wednesday which occurs on February 22 this year, is part of Ordinary Time. continued on page 3...

5 January 8, 2012 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "I recognize in You, O little Jesus, the King of heaven and earth; grant that I may adore You with the faith and love of the Magi." "A start often appears in the heaven of our souls; it is an inspiration from God, clear and intimate, urging us to greater generosity and calling us to a life of closer union with Him. Like the Magi, we too must always follow our star with faith, promptness, and selfless generosity. If we allow it to guide us, it will certainly lead us to God; it will bring us to the One whom we are seeking." - Divine Intimacy Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours: Sunday, noon, 2 pm; Monday, 1 am; Wednesday, 3 am; Thursday, 10, 11 am; Friday, 11 am, 1, 2 pm; and Saturday, 9 am and 9 pm. 7 January 8, 2012 Page 7 Lending Library New Year's Resolution time! How are you doing? How about "Perfect Love casts out all fear." (1John 4:18). A daily reading book, God Calling edited by A. J. Russell which contains what "Two Listeners" claimed were messages from Jesus, expands on this verse. "Never let yourselves fear anybody or anything. No fear of My failing you. No fear that your faith will fail you. No fear of poverty or loneliness. No fear of not knowing the way. No fear of others. No fear of their misunderstanding. But,... this absolute casting out of fear is the result of a Perfect Love, a perfect Love of Me and My Father. Speak to Me about everything. Listen to Me at all times. Feel My tender nearness, substituting at once some thought of Me for the fear. The powers of evil watch you as a besieging force would watch a guarded city-- the object being always to find some weak spot, attack that, and so gain an entrance. So evil lurks around you, and seeks to surprise you in some fear. The fear may have been but a small one, but it affords evil a weak spot of attack and entrance, and then in come rushing despondency; doubt of Me, and so many other sins. Pray, My beloved children, for that Perfect Love of Me indeed casts out all fear." 8 Page 8 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Religious Formation Family Activities Kids have Gifts and Talents too! We started our Children s Offertory officially on January 1. Children who attend Religious Formation or Shrine Catholic Grade school and are in grades kindergarten through six all received a set of offertory envelopes. As explained in the letter that went home, our focus of this is not to raise money for the parish but for the children to learn that they too have gifts of time and talent to offer that are valuable. We will periodically be sharing some of the time and talent offered by our parish children (expressed in their own words), along with their first names. Some children started turning in their envelopes early so here are some of their offerings from the Christmas collection: Ethan: taking out the garbage Viktor: organized my closet without being asked Collin: stacking wood Cameron: taking out the trash for my grandma Welcome National Shrine Visitors! If you are visiting the National Shrine during this Christmas season, welcome! If you are considering joining our parish, allow us to introduce our department. The Office of Religious Formation is here to serve the catechetical needs of the parish. We provide religious formation classes for children ages 3 and up and host family events and activities. Registration starts each spring for the upcoming school year. Our preschool program runs most Sunday mornings of the school year during the 9 am Mass. This age appropriate class is especially designed and geared for three- and fouryear-old children (who are potty-trained). Children learn about our loving God through song, large group activities, and crafts while their parents attend mass. Our elementary program is for children in kindergarten through grade six. These sessions are held most Mondays at Shrine Catholic Grade School. Parents can choose from two convenient time slots: 4:30 5:30 pm or 6 7 pm. Children who are in at least second grade and have attended religious formation classes or a Catholic school the prior year are prepared to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. In other words, if not attending a Catholic school, current kindergartners should be registered this spring to start first grade religious formation classes in order to receive Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in second grade. The middle school program is for teens in grades 7 and 8. These classes are on Mondays from 6:15 7:30 pm at Shrine Catholic Academy. During these two years, candidates are also prepared for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Continue to read the Religious Formation pages of the Herald (also accessible at for details on class registration, upcoming events and special family activities. 17 January 8, 2012 Page 17 Holy Father s Prayer Intentions January 2012 General Intention: Victims of Natural Disasters. That the victims of natural disasters may receive the spiritual and material comfort they need to rebuild their lives. Missionary Intention: Dedication to Peace. That the dedication of Christians to peace may bear witness to the name of Christ before all men and women of good will. Vocations As we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan by John, we look back to our own baptism, when we were brought into the saving Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. At our Baptism, we received a commission, our vocation, to live out our faith in the world. During this week s celebration of National Vocation Awareness Week, we recommit to following Jesus, we pray for the guidance to find where He is truly calling us, and to pray for an in-crease in vocations to the priest-hood and religious life. True joy comes in finding the path that God has laid out for you; let us all renew that call of discipleship received at baptism. To learn more about vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life, please visit our website at or contact Fr. Tim Birney, Director of Priestly Vocations at birney.tim@aod.org, A Family Perspective The Magi in today s Gospel were led to Jesus by a star. Who are the stars your children follow? Don t let it be the tabloid stars. Resolve in this New Year to be the guiding star in the life of your children. - Bud Ozar NATIONAL SHRINE of the Little Flower Parish Office 2100 W. 12 Mile Road, Royal Oak, MI Pastoral Staff Parish Main Number Rev.
