1 Shrine Herald Royal Oak, MI January 12, 2014 We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. The Baptism of the Lord A Message from the Easton Family To the National Shrine Family: We, the Family of Monsignor Easton, want to express our sincerest and heartfelt appreciation for your overwhelming love and support during such a difficult time. Your actions were truly a fabulous tribute to Bill our son, brother and uncle. He has touched so many of us and would be so humbled to see how his influence and ministry is being practiced. Bill lives on through all of us. Thank you for the prayers, love and faith may we all keep him in our hearts and practice what he preached. - Mrs. Easton, Karl, Theresa, Kathleen and Mark A Message from Fr. Joe Lang As we reflect on recent events and the passing of our beloved pastor, Monsignor William Easton, I wanted to take a moment to give thanksgiving not only for the life of Monsignor, but for the hundreds, if not thousands, of lives he has touched. The overwhelming love and support offered by so many during this difficult time has given us the strength to make it through the past couple of weeks. Thank you from the priests, parish staff and schools staff for your unwavering support and dedication to the National Shrine of the Little Flower parish and Shrine Catholic Schools. Parish Administrator I am humbled to be appointed as the Parish Administrator for the National Shrine of the Little Flower. Please see the letter from the Archdiocese of Detroit elsewhere in this edition of the Herald. With such an unexpected loss, it is understandable that not only do we as a parish family feel grief, but there is often uncertainty as to what the future holds. I am here to assure the National Shrine Parish and Shrine Catholic Schools that we will continue to be a strong and vibrant parish community and I will do everything in my power to make certain that the parish and schools run steady during this transitional time. The Archdiocese of Detroit has offered their unconditional support to assist me with this task while they take the time to carefully consider the next pastor of the National Shrine. We have very competent and strong team members at both the parish offices and at the schools. We are all working together to keep things running smoothly. Each of us knows how important it would be to Monsignor Easton that we do everything we can to continue his legacy by continuing to spread the Gospel of Christ through our work at the parish and schools. Please, rest assured we will come through this stronger as a parish community. continued on page 3...

Your gifts were about $10,000 and were matched with a generous gift from another inspired donor! Though we had a somber celebration of Christmas in the parish due to Monsignor Easton s illness and death, it was a prayerful time to do good and share blessings while we, ourselves, still have life in our own mortal bodies. What a special time it was to work as the Body of Christ here in this parish community! Your gifts were distributed to those who asked us to help them respond to the needs of those they serve at Christmas and into this new year. We may not see their faces, but God does, and God sees our giving hearts! Onward we go into the year called 2014! It, too, will be blessed with fullness and need, sickness, and health, wonder and pain, challenges and joys for we are on a journey together and we need one another. May God be with us and bless us! 3 January 12, 2014 Page 3 continued from page 1... Thank You I would like to take a moment to express my deep gratitude and thanks to Fr. Tomek Maka for all the assistance he is providing the parish during this difficult time. Fr. Tomek was one of Monsignor Easton's closest friends and his support to our parish family during this time is something for which I am very grateful. Fr. Tomek has suffered a deep loss with the passing of his friend, and we want to support him as well during this time. Thank you Fr. Tomek for being with us and helping us to keep things running smoothly during this transitional period. Your friend, Monsignor Easton, would be very proud of you for helping to care for his Shrine parish family. Divine Life Baptized in Christ Natasha Maria daughter of Maurizio and Adriana (Billeci) Rea January 3, 2014 Dear Shrine Parishioners, On behalf of our entire staff, I want to thank everyone at Shrine for the tremendous cooperation, assistance and true hospitality that was given to the Easton family, ourselves and everyone in attendance at Monsignor Easton s visitation and funeral. To single anyone out would be unfair since every single person was very special. You were all hurting, but you followed Monsignor Easton s guidance and did everything necessary. The Shrine priests were readily supportive and effective the priests words were truly inspirational. Despite unusually difficult demands, everyone on the staff went out of their way to be sure everything went properly, and it did. The volunteers were incredible. The ushers were the best group we have ever worked with! The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion had a particularly difficult task, and they performed perfectly. The musicians were outstanding, and Monsignor certainly appreciated that. The Dads Club, the Scouts and everyone else involved could not have been more helpful. Our mutual goal was to have a proper memorial for a great priest and a wonderful person. Because of the Shrine community, we all succeeded. It was a pleasure working with all of you. Sincerely Yours, Terence B. Desmond

5 January 12, 2014 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Let us say with Paul, 'I die daily'" - Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity "O Lord, I beseech You, keep my faith pure and grant that, until my last sigh, I may feel the testimony of a good conscience. Grant that I, who have been baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, may always believe what I professed in the Sacrament of my regeneration. Let me adore You, my Father, and Your Son with You; let me be worthy of the Holy Spirit who proceeds from You and Your only-begotten Son. Truly I have a worthy pledge of faith to guarantee what I believe, and it is He who said, 'Father, all that is Mine is Yours, and all that is Yours is Mine,' Jesus Christ, my Lord, who lives in You and who, remaining in God, proceeds from You, is always near You, and is blessed forever and ever." - St. Hilary Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. If you have items you'd like to donate, please place them in a bag marked with my name in the cupboard under the sign-in sheets or you may leave them in the parish office for me, Marie Lama. We thank you, Lord, for Your servant, Monsignor Easton, who established this permanent adoration chapel here at the Shrine of the Little Flower. I once told Monsignor he would only know all the souls that were touched by this chapel when he was with the Lord. May he know that now. May the soul of Monsignor and all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us!!! 7 January 12, 2014 Page 7 Thank You As I sit and reflect on this past week I am in awe. I would like to thank EVERYONE for all that they did for Monsignors viewing to the resurrection Mass. From the rosaries weeks before to the reception in HH to the the luncheon for family and friends it was an amazing response. Thank you welcome committee and worship commission. For the cookie volunteers, wow. We had enough cookies to go for two days and then some. We did donate some cookies at the end to Eastwood clinic and they too were very thankful. As for the viewing and Mass, thank you to our priests, sacristans, Sister Noreen, staff, musicians, altar servers, hospitality, parish council, Knights, scouts, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, funeral directors and to everyone else for the tireless hours they put in the past week. I am blessed to be a part of the Shrine family. You are all amazing. Thank you again. I am not mentioning names cause there are way to many. 13 January 12, 2014 Page 13 Catholic Services Appeal CSA Dear Parishioners and Friends, I m writing to thank you for your continuing generosity to our Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) and give you an update on our progress. As you know, the CSA Appeal has helped to bring many blessings to our parish over the years. A special blessing we received this year was the addition of Fr. Patrick Gonyeau to our pastoral staff as an Associate Pastor. Anyone who has had the opportunity to spend even a minute or two in his presence recognizes the joy and spiritual inspiration he brings to those around him. We are so grateful that he is part of our Shrine family. I can t help but give CSA some of the credit for bringing Father Patrick into our lives because gifts to CSA support Sacred Heart Seminary where Fr. Patrick was able to discern and study for the priesthood. I hope that you were pleased that we had the opportunity a couple of weeks ago to hear current seminarians, who are also friends of Fr. Patrick, talk about how their studies are preparing them to serve God s people in the near future. Some day we may be blessed to have one of them join our pastoral staff. As I write this message to you, we have not reached our 2013 goal of $207,846. We need $13,000 of additional donations to successfully end our appeal. If we exceed our target, any excess will be returned directly to our parish. If we do not meet the target, the shortfall will be taken from our general fund.
