1 Shrine Herald Royal Oak, MI September 29, 2013 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Saint Thérèse "Thou, O Lord, hast been the only object of my songs in the place of my pilgrimage." Saint Thérèse wrote a number of poems, songs and canticles. She had a love for music. It is most fitting therefore for the National Shrine to celebrate her feast day with a vigil of music, prayer and growing in our understanding of Saint Thérèse. We can be proud of our parish musicians, soloists and choirs. Their ministry is deeply appreciated. It is also good for us to celebrate solemn sung evening prayer on her feast with the Archbishop of Detroit and a good number of priests who once served the Shrine. I always enjoy our children singing. I am sure it pleases The Lord and delights Saint Thérèse. I look forward to seeing you and your family and friends at these wonderful ceremonies. I am confident you will find them enriching. Convocation This past week I was with our three associate pastors and almost 300 other priests of the Archdiocese of Detroit at Boyne Highlands for a convocation. It was a deeply enriching time of prayer, fraternity and facing the stresses and challenges of our Church. It was a very profitable time. Congratulations to Tom Kirkwood The third annual Bishop Michael J. Gallagher Society Mass and Award Dinner will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Ladywood High School in Livonia. The evening will start at 6:00 pm with Mass at the Felician Mother House Presentation Chapel, to be followed by a dinner, and program at Ladywood High School, located on the Felician's Livonia campus. The program will honor three Detroit area Catholic educators with the Society's "Order of St. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. continued on page 3... 5 September 29, 2013 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your senses." - C.S. Lewis "How small were the number of our Lord's friends when He was silent before His judges! Oh, what a melody for my heart is that silence of Jesus...He makes Himself poor that we may be able to do Him charity....he stretches out His hand to us like a beggar, that on the sunlit day of judgment, when He appears in glory, He may be able to utter and we hear the loving words: 'Come, blessed of my Father; for I was hungry and you gave Me to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was in prison, sick and you came to Me.'...It was Jesus Himself who uttered those words; it is He who wants our love, begs for it. He puts Himself, so to say, at our mercy. He wills to take nothing unless we give it to Him and the smallest thing is precious in His divine eyes." - St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. 7 September 29, 2013 Page 7 Lending Library Learn why a successful Methodist minister made the journey to the Catholic Church in the book, Confessions of a Mega Church Pastor by Allen Hunt. One reviewer said, "This is such a powerful book! it is a raw, honest and moving story that has deepened my faith and my love for the Church, and from a perspective I could never had imagined. I can't recommend it highly enough for anyone who wants to know what it really means to be Catholic." (Back cover) In this time when all Catholics are being encouraged to be able to explain and defend their Faith, this book can be an encouragement. 10 Page 10 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings Sixth Grade Our sixth grade students are enjoying the responsibility and service of Spirit Brigade, Recycling and First Grade Buddies. We began our year writing a class prayer encompassing the different types of prayer. Dear God, You are powerful and mighty. All Your creation is worthy of praise. Please bless our family and friends. Bless our teachers as they guide us. Please help us to grow in our faith as we set an example for the rest of Shrine Catholic Grade School. Please give our teachers patience as they help us to grow in knowledge and faith. Thank You for all You provide for us. In Your Name, we pray. Amen At this time we are preparing prayer services and reviewing the Bible. We will begin our faith journey as we look at God s love for us through His creation. In English, we reviewed the elements of a good story, organized, and wrote an imaginative story. Our quick writes were used to review punctuation. The Common Core Standards affirm the importance of grammar in the context of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In social studies our sixth graders examined the Constitution and wrote a Classroom Constitution. The Stone Age Era was studied and daily geography skills are practiced with our Where in the World questions. Reading class finds students analyzing elements of historical fiction as well as reading the classic novel Old Yeller. We continue to read a variety of non-fiction including local newspapers and our Time for Kids magazine. We are just coming to a close with our first chapter on cells and are excited to end the unit with a DNA extraction in the science lab. Our Super Science Binders are proving to be a great resource as it pushes our thinking to new levels. In math we have just completed a review of basic operations and look forward to working with algebraic expressions and properties before diving into decimals. We will continue our weekly times tests, as well as our daily story problem to strengthen our skills and expand our mathematical thinking for problem solving. We are well into our new year and excited about all the good things ahead. Mrs. Hawley Mrs. Hazen Mrs. Smith

If you have not had an opportunity to sign the petition to prohibit abortion coverage from the Michigan health care exchange, representatives will be available with petitions after all Masses the weekend of October 5 and October 6. We need your support to bring legislation before Michigan lawmakers that prevent taxpayer money from paying for abortions. Abortion is not health care, and no citizen should be forced to pay for a procedure that destroys human life. The Michigan Catholic Conference supports this legislation. 16 Page 16 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower D. T. P. S. Did you notice that Jesus did not condemn the rich man s success? He did not say that having great wealth was a bad thing at all does he? Nor does he do what the culture of that day did to the poor man who likely was an outcast and thought of as spiritually destitute or perhaps he was experiencing physical problems. Instead he is using these two men as examples to teach us that worldly success can be dangerous. Worldly success can make us forget that we really do NEED God. In turn that can make us insensitive towards our neighbor whom Jesus taught we must love as ourselves. Jesus isn t condemning the rich man s success but he IS condemning how the man reacted to his success. It had left him cold-hearted, complacent and self-centered. How do we avoid becoming complacent? We can start each day with a morning offering, you may have heard of this. Simply start each day by offering our work, suffering, and success to God. It s like having a roadmap for our spiritual journey and can take less than a minute each day. Google it if you have to, but just start it to give yourself that direction in life to avoid becoming like the rich man. In Christ, Deacon Tom

The RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is a six-month long religious study program and conversion process leading to full participation in the Catholic Church for the non-baptized, those already validly baptized in separated Christian churches, and for adult Catholics who have never been confirmed. It also serves as an excellent renewal experience for Catholics returning to the Church. It is an exciting personal and communal spiritual journey leading to a transformation of mind and spirit. Adults needing one or all of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and/or the Eucharist) are invited to join this exciting program, which begins Sunday, September 15. We meet every Sunday Morning in the Parish Conference Center from 10:30-12:30 until Easter. Learning real facts about the Catholic Faith through the combined lenses of philosophy, theology, Scripture and history is a most exciting and challenging experience. (No exams!) The RCIA is a friendly process that begins with a time of honest inquiry and review of topics like the existence of God, nature of Man, mystery of creation, origin of evil and suffering, and the life of Jesus (Incarnation, Passion & Death; Resurrection, Ascension, and Pentecost) At the end of this initial period, if candidates for Baptism express their intention to become Catholic, they are accepted into the order of Catechumens, and along with all the other participants are anointed with the Sign of the Cross, receive special blessings, and a Bible. This is a time of nurturing, deep spiritual growth, and continuing personal conversion for all in the parish sharing your journey. On the First Sunday of Lent (March 9, 2014) those seeking to enter the Church visit Blessed Sacrament Cathedral to appear before Archbishop Vigneron as a formal expression of their intention to become full members of the Church. The entire period of Lent will be filled with special blessings called scrutinies, and become a time of intense personal reflection and prayer. At the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday evening, all will receive those sacraments which will bring them into full communion with the Catholic Church. A brief period following Easter provides an opportunity for shared reflections on this personal journey to faith and explores ways to help live as an active Catholic today in our complex modern world. Registration is easy you may leave your name, address, and phone number with the parish office at , ext. 0, or contact John LaCroix, Director of Adult Formation, by phone at : jwlacroix@comcast.net, or simply come to the Parish Conference Center on any Sunday morning at 10:15 am beginning September 15. All are welcome. Bring a friend! Come see where time well spent will lead. Jesus said, Be not afraid! Bl. John Paul II believed him and taught us all to live and die with courage. The journey to Faith is the most important trip we will ever take. In fact, it s the reason we are born. No matter what happens along the way, one thing is certain: we never walk alone. Now is your time to act. Come join us in the journey. Be not afraid! Rachel s Vineyard With the friendly and expert help and advice of other people, and as a result of your own painful experience, you can be among the most eloquent defenders of everyone s right to life. - Blessed Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, o.99 We are ready to help you find healing and wholeness again. Please call. Detroit Rachel s Vineyard Call to attend the next retreat January 3-5,

19 September 29, 2013 Page 19 Year of Faith The Virgin Mary most perfectly embodies the obedience of faith. By faith Mary welcomes the tidings and promise brought by the angel Gabriel, believing that with God nothing will be impossible and so giving her assent: Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word. Elizabeth greeted her: Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord. It is for this faith that all generations have called Mary blessed. Throughout her life and until her last ordeal when Jesus her son died on the cross, Mary s faith never wavered. She never ceased to believe in the fulfillment of God s word. And so the Church venerates in Mary the purest realization of faith. Catechism of the Catholic Church # Question How does Mary s obedience of faith serve as a model and inspiration for me? Prayer My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, My spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations shall call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and lifted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.
