Mrs. Erken Retires Mrs. Gabrielle Erken, Principal of Shrine Catholic High School and Academy since 2005, has announced her retirement, effective June 30, She will take on a new role as Assistant to the President of Shrine Catholic Schools. Mrs. Erken is a veteran Catholic school educator, who joined the Shrine community in 2001 as the principal of the Academy, and became principal of both the Academy and the High School when they were merged into a single administrative unit. Building on Shrine s tradition of offering an innovative curriculum, Mrs. Erken developed a technology-rich educational environment that prepares students for the demands of college and the global market place. She introduced Project Lead the Way, a national STEM program for grades 7-12, and forged a partnership with Lawrence Technological University that enables students to take college -level classes and earn college credit. Justice and Peace Always in Season During this season of Lent we have the opportunity to feed the hungry by participating in outreach such as The Welcome Inn, a day center for the homeless which is housed this year at Starr Presbyterian Church. Another need is to volunteer with other Shrine parishioners between March 3 and March 15, as our parish cohosts the overnight Warming Center for homeless guests at the Berkley Community Church. (see details elsewhere in the Herald). Another call is to become active in ending hunger nationally and internationally. To help please log onto This is the web site for Bread for the World, a Christian Advocacy group which urges U.S. lawmakers to end hunger in our own country and abroad. Hunger is not a political issue. It is a human issue. Urge Congress to form a circle of protection around programs that help hungry people. In Matthew's Gospel we read: "The King will reply,' Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of these least of my brothers or sisters, you did for me. 3 February 10, 2013 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... interested in exploring a career in medicine an opportunity to work with medical professionals while earning academic credit. Anticipating the global world in which Shrine students will work, Mandarin Chinese was added to the curriculum, as well as a student-teacher mission trip to Nicaragua. Mrs. Erken also was instrumental in working with The Center for Constitutional Studies to introduce a course on the United States Constitution, creating additional scholarship opportunities for Shrine High School students. During Mrs. Erken s tenure, she oversaw significant upgrades to the School s facilities, including new science labs, redesign of the Art Room, the addition of a new Field House, the conversion of a gymnasium into the state-of-the-art Sanders Performing Arts Center, and renovation of the Student Center. Her leadership is best exemplified by the accomplishments of her students. During her tenure, Shrine graduates were regularly admitted to their colleges of choice, including Duke, Boston College, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Michigan, Michigan State, DePaul, Loyola, Savannah College of Art and Design and Xavier, often earning significant scholarships. These results are a testament to her focus on students. Gabrielle has been a dedicated servant to the Schools, and has made a lasting impact on all of the students whose lives she touched. It has been a privilege to work with her. She will continue to be involved with Shrine Catholic Schools at all levels as a Special Assistant to me in my role as President of Shrine Catholic Schools. A search committee has already been formed to find a new principal who will not only continue the strong Shrine tradition of academic excellence, but further strengthen the Shrine High School and Academy as the premier Catholic coeducational High School and Academy in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Rosie, Carlito, Lord Stanley & Blossom Blossom has fit right in with the rest of the pack. She is so sweet and mellow. It is fun to walk with her and Lord Stanley (aka Stachu). They walk side by side. Every now and then we have to stop for Stachu to inspect a fire hydrant or bush. It looks like Blossom will be finding her forever home fairly soon. We will miss her, but she deserves her very own family. 5 February 10, 2013 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "The greatness of a person who trusts is that he goes on trusting even when he knows that his task is beyond him." "With daring abandon, the little bird wishes to remain gazing upon its Divine Sun. Nothing will frighten it, neither wind nor rain, and if dark clouds come and hide the Star of Love...and it seems it should believe there is nothing but the clouds surrounding it, this is the moment of perfect joy......he wishes me to surrender myself like a little child and not concern myself over what is to happen to me." - St. Thérèse of Lisieux (taken from Two Sisters in the Spirit by Hans Urs Von Balthasar) Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. Open Holy Hours: Monday, 6 pm; Thursday, Saturday, 10 am; Wednesday, 4 pm; Friday, 11 am, Noon, 8 pm. The following Holy Hours have persons who desire partners with which to share their Holy Hours: Sunday, 10 am, 2, 3, 4 pm; Monday, 10 am; Tuesday, 9 am, 7 pm; Wednesday, 2, 3 pm; Friday, 1, 2, 3 pm; Saturday, 4 pm; Tuesday-Friday, 1 pm. Thank you for the donations to the "freebie/evangelization" basket. Please leave donations in a bag marked with my name, "Marie Lama", on it in the cupboard beneath the sign-in sheets or at the parish office. Please don't simply put several items in the basket. I like to "ration out" the items so that the basket does not overflow and look messy. PLEASE NOTE!!!! Friday, February 15, marks a hallmark anniversary for our adoration family at the Shrine. We will be celebrating 25 years of perpetual Eucharistic adoration with a 7:00 pm Mass of thanksgiving in the St. Thérèse Chapel in the main church. Please plan on attending. Much gratitude goes to Mary Lu DeFauw who with her husband, Don, initiated adoration at the Shrine. Theresa Dysarz served as coordinator for several years and deserves much thanks for all she did in helping adoration continue. Many, many thanks to all the captains, divisional leaders, and adorers who have made the decision to honor our Lord in this way. My thoughts go to all the adorers who have died. I pray that their joy is complete in the Presence of our Lord in heaven. Finally, thank you to our priests who afford us this privilege by consecrating the Eucharist and giving us the Bread of Heaven. Thank you, beloved priests, for the permanent adoration chapel here at the Shrine. Only in heaven will you know the souls that were strengthened, fortified, given peace, given grace, just by coming to this chapel be it in the middle of the night, the early morning, the daytime hours, or in the evening. May our adoration never cease!!! Adorers, please add Robert Zalewski, to your sub list. He is available weekends and weekdays, 6-11 pm. Please add Nancy Benjamin, , to your sub list. She is available weekends and weekdays, 12-5 am, 12-5 pm; 6-11 pm. Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us!!! Thank you! Life Matters Be a Part of History Make a Difference Save a Life This past week, on February 4, the country remembered Rosa Parks on the occasion of her centennial birthday. Rosa Parks courageous act of refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white man, sparked a year-long bus boycott that began to break the walls of legalized racial segregation in America. One single act can make a difference. This Lent, you have an opportunity to have one single act make a difference. We no longer face the injustice of legalized segregation, but we face the injustice of legalized abortion of millions of unborn children. Your actions, your witness, can make a difference to the life of a mother and her baby. 40 Days for Life started in 2007 with a small group with a vision of stopping abortion. Since that time, babies and their mothers have been saved from the pains of abortion and hearts have been changed. 40 Days for Life has had proven results: 6,749 lives have been saved; 76 workers have quit and 27 clinics have closed. 40 Days for Life is about prayer and fasting, not protesting. It s about compassion, not judgment. It s about caring enough and having courage to take action to stop an injustice. We are called to bring Christ to those in despair. This Lent, be a part of history and let Christ use your prayerful presence in front of the abortion clinic. Gather a group of friends and stop by Heritage Hall next weekend after Masses to sign up for the designated National Shrine Day on Tuesday, February 26, Sunday, March 10 and Monday, March 18. Contact Laura Dysarz at or 40DaysSouthfieldHelp@gmail.com. You can also sign up for other hours at southfield or contact Barb at Consider signing up for an hour a week. The prayerful, peaceful witness takes place in front of the WomanCare abortion facility at Southfield Rd. (1/4 mile south of 12 Mile Rd). Note: Drop-ins are always welcome, but sign-ups are strongly encouraged. Rachel s Vineyard Come on a Rachel s Vineyard Retreat and receive God s grace and forgiveness. The retreat has been a life-changing and spiritual awakening for me. I feel that any woman who has had an abortion should come to Rachel s Vineyard to experience healing and forgiveness. Give us a call and join us on the next Rachel s Vineyard Retreat. Detroit Rachel s Vineyard info@detroitrachelsvineyard.org

Quiet our minds and hearts that we may be open to the gift of your truth, and grant that our Parish Mission may be: a time of Grace for all, a time of growth for the young, a time of refreshment for the old, a time of renewal for families, a time of healing for the broken, a time of joy for the sorrowing, a time of challenge for the complacent, a time of forgiveness for the sinner, a time of strength for the holy, a time of homecoming for all who have been away. We beg you these things, Holy Father, in Jesus name. Amen.

14 Page 14 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings Sixth Grade News In religion the students are learning the prayer to St. Francis and using it as one of many prayers to pray for their seminarians. We continue to study God s plan of salvation through Moses. We are also comparing the Passover connection to the Eucharist which will help prepare us for the Seder meal that we will experience in March. To help experience Lent and Christ s passion, death, and Resurrection, we will be attending The Cross and the Light at the Music Hall in March. Now that we are into the third quarter the sixth graders are learning to source their information, take notes, and write a thesis statement. From there they will outline and write a research report. There are many interesting topics that they have chosen from science, history, and mythology. In social studies we are exploring Ancient Greece with an Athens vs. Sparta debate, creating historical maps, and making up our own original Greek Olympics Game! Our current study in science is of invertebrates, their similarities/differences, as well as their basic needs for survival. We will look closely at the structures, environments, and symmetry of sponges, cnidarians and worms, as well as mollusks, arthropods, and echinoderms. Following, we will begin the exploration of vertebrates as we compare fish and amphibians, as well as reptiles, birds, and mammals. Data collection and analysis has kept us busy in math. Students are using measures of central tendency (median, mean and mode), frequency tables, and line plots to organize data in an effort to make it usable. Reading is cross curricular as we focus on non-fiction, newscaster activities, and other expository non-fiction activities. Our sixth graders are hardworking and the best! Mrs. Hawley Mrs. Hazen Mrs. Smith Save the Date-Grade School New Family Open House- Thursday, February 28 from 7:00-8:30 pm! Lenten Fish Bake Fish Bake is seeking new leadership for the 2014 Year. The present chair people have been in place for over five years and with that continuity the weekly process is well organized including checklists from start to finish. This is a popular parish wide event to which 100 volunteers sign up to eagerly serve each week. Presently, only 3 chair people are in place to manage and organize this group of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers and 2 of these chair people are retiring at the end of the year. Our volunteer organizer/scheduler is staying so management of that crucial task will remain in capable hands. We are, however, seeking 1-2 volunteers to manage the inventory and supplies placing weekly orders with Gordons and Superior Fish for delivery to the school each of the 6 weeks. We are also seeking 2-3 volunteers to fill Rick Lee s position. Rick oversees the entire Friday process from start to finish in addition to running the ovens and managing the kitchen crew, but his position could be subdivided into smaller segments. If the idea of running the Fish Bake perks your interest, please contact Betty Tomezak at btomezak@sbcglobal.net or Rick Lee at rmmmlee@wowway.com with your questions or to receive more detailed job descriptions. Holy Land Pilgrimage Terra Sancta Pilgrimages with Franciscan friar Fr. Alex Kratz will be leading a Catholic Pilgrimage to the Holy Land from April 15-29, This life-changing experience walking in Jesus footsteps includes daily Mass and Rosary, biblical readings on site, time for prayer and spiritual guidance, and meeting local Christians. Cost is $3,899 (all expenses included, round trip from Detroit, 3 daily meals, all tips and taxes). $500 deposit due at registration. Orientation Meeting is February 10. Other dates: October 7-21, Call or mrspattig@yahoo.com.
